Our Institute provides actin research grants every year to empower and enable staff to become innovate educators.
According to Bass (2012) the innovation and disruption goes hand in hand when staff are supported to become risk
takers and reflective practitioners. While the grants are designed to encourage the teachers to become innovators in
the education space, it is also beneficial for them to become reflective practitioners. This year’s participants are encouraged to record their reflections and support the development of their project in a Mahara ePortflio. This will
enable them to share and reflect on a strong repository of their materials. It also allows them to be selective in how,
and who they share their material with. The participants were introduced to the portflios through face to face training sessions. Partnering Panthers: Library & TLTC Collaboration at Purchase College to Re-...Marie Sciangula
In this session, presented at SUNY CIT 2014 at Cornell University, we described the successful collaboration between the Purchase College Library and the Teaching, Learning, and Technology Center. An environment conducive to partnership and the exchange of ideas has fostered numerous projects that have enhanced student learning, deepened relationships with teaching faculty, and improved workflows. We summarized these projects, outlined our future goals, and provided direction for those wishing to develop similar partnerships and projects in the future.
From Creation to Preservation: Transforming the Culminating Student Project T...Marie Sciangula
This project briefing, presented at the METRO's 2nd Annual Conference (#metrocon14) on January 15, 2014 at Baruch College, shows how key members of the Purchase College Library and the Teaching, Learning, and Technology Center came together to transform the year-long Student Projects process. At Purchase College, Student Projects is the blanket term used to refer to the ‘culminating student experience’ and includes senior projects, capstone papers, and master’s theses. We will show how librarians, catalogers, developers, and TLTC staff partnered to create a workspace that has taken Student Projects from a traditional paper-based process and transformed it into a dynamic, digital, student-centered venture that is interwoven with reference, instruction, assessment, access, and other practical innovations such as the ability for faculty readers/sponsors to approve projects within the workspace. We will explain how we adapted technologies already in place at Purchase (Moodle, LibGuides, and Drupal) to enhance and streamline the process of researching, developing, submitting, and archiving Student Projects. The flexibility of these systems allows us to respond to student and faculty feedback quickly and make adjustments as needed. We will present our successes, challenges, and share our current plans for developing an open, fully searchable, and aesthetically mindful digital repository. We will also discuss future plans for a large-scale digitization effort to make accessible nearly 40 years of Student Projects, allowing for better and broader access to this collection of important student scholarship and creativity. We hope that our collaboration and the development of the Student Projects digital repository will make a meaningful contribution to Purchase College’s institutional memory and serve as an inspiration to other institutions interested in preserving student scholarship.

With the increase in the diffusion of blended and online programming across higher educational institutions, stakeholders are looking for ways to ensure the quality of the student experience. Quality of blended programs can be ensured through faculty and instructional development and training, faculty and instructor evidence of competence and recognition for excellence, constructive evaluation and feedback on blended and online course design and delivery, and community-building opportunities among instructors and staff. Blended learning is becoming a prominent mode of programming and delivery in education. It is swiftly emerging and transforming higher education to better meet the needs of our students providing them with more effective learning experiences. This movement is leading to a renovation in the way courses are taught and programs support their students. Instructional and faculty development provides the core foundation to institutional programming in providing a framework for implementing blended and online learning pedagogy in the classroom. This student-centered, active learning pedagogy has the potential to alter the traditional classroom by enhancing course effectiveness through increased interactivity leading to superior student outcomes.
A recent study reported that "Respondents ... anticipated that the number of students taking online courses will grow by 22.8% and that those taking blended courses will grow even more over the next 2 years" (Picciano, Seamen, Shea, & Swan, 2012, p. 128). As the demand for blended learning opportunities increases, so does the need for development of instructors to teach and design blended courses and mechanisms to ensure the quality of courses and programs. The University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee (UWM) has been providing instructional development and blended learning opportunities to students for over a decade. Since 2001, UWM has developed 8 blended degree programs. In the fall of 2012, UWM offered approximately 100 blended courses and enrolled 7,655 students (26%) in at least one blended course. UWM continues to see growth, as the nation does, and continues to provide opportunities for students to best meet their needs.

In today’s slideshare, we look at the use of digital technology to enhance reflective-reflexive practice in a 5E lesson plan. It is in response to a teacher’s sudden and drastic shift from the traditional classroom to a strictly online learning environment. While learning takes place in the synchronous environment through live conferences, it is supported using an asynchronous learning management platform.
The 5e model of instruction will empower the students to take responsibility for their own learning. The teacher will guide the students through the five phases - engage, explore, explain, elaborate, and evaluate.
