- Now that you have Git in your system, let’s customize the environment. Git comes with a tool called Git Config, that helps you customize configuration variables. Your Identity : First thing you should do when you install git is set your username and e-mail address. This is important because every Git Commit uses this information. You need to do this only once to Set Everything up. You can set your default text editor such as Vim Emacs Gedit etc (if you want) $ git config --global core.editor emacs
