Examples Of Mise The Scene In Apocalypse
Luis M. Garcia
Professor Heidenreich
English 190
2017 February 14 Apocalypse Now functions of Mise en scene
The scene I will be discussing will be one of my favorite scenes of the movie the beginning scene, The
beginning starts showing a jungle full of trees with yellow gas rising up in the picture the jungle then
gets destroyed as flames erupt. A face of a dazed soldier than appears shown at an upward angle this
image of the man also seem to come with images memories of the things he witnessed in war. In the
beginning of Apocalypse now, A lot if not all the images shown were showing foreshadowing. For
example, The yellow fog and trees shown right before it lead to the ... Show more content on

He felt like his room walls were caving in on him he looked restless and somewhat frantic of not being
in the jungle. They then showed the soldier practicing his mixed martial arts technique in his
underwear with both of his lamps on as he had been in his dark room all day it was kind of a change to
see some light. After that scene his room was dark once more toward the end of this scene. In my
opinion this was done because he was finally starting to talk and realize the real terror of war and the
terror of war isn t happy it s a dark and scary thing. Right before the scene ends they show the soldier
continuing his mixed martial arts and he seems to lose it as he punches a mirror and cuts up his hand.
They then show him sitting next to his blood covered sheets as he completely breaks down and lets
out his emotions and cries. I believe he had reached his breaking point and the drinks he had earlier in
the scene had caught up to him and his emotions and the alcohol did not blend well, As seeing his
reflection in the mirror seemed to anger him. The scene then ended as it almost left you with some sort
of guilt watching him breaking down crying while being covered in his own blood from the wound on
his hand from

David Foster Wallace s Essay Consider The Lobster
Throughout the course of David Foster Wallace s essay, Consider the Lobster, he uses many different
methods to try and convince his audience in fact it is seemingly inhumane to boil lobsters. Wallace
proves to the reader that the proponents of the Maine Lobster Festival, home of the World s Largest
Lobster Cooker, support their style of killing the lobster by falsely arguing that lobsters do not feel
pain, when in fact they do. By examining the essay, it is apparent that Wallace is writing to more than
one audience. One audience that he is writing to is the readers of Gourmet, the magazine that this
essay was published in. However, it is important to note that this essay is also being written to those
people who would not have read the magazine otherwise, that is the people that who are purely
reading this article because it was written by Wallace. Because there is such a broad audience, it is
nearly impossible for every piece of evidence given to effect each read the same way. Below I will
examine a piece of evidence that appeals to only one audience, as well as evidence that does in fact
appeal to both.
To begin with, the cab scene is imperative in supporting Wallace s ... Show more content on

Wallace sets up a scenario for the reader that puts them in the mindset of the lobster itself, as it is
being boiled. Wallace says that while the lobster is boiling it ...behaves as much as you or I would...
(Wallace 62). This sentence automatically makes the reader feel extremely uneasy about the idea of
boiling a lobster, because all they can picture now is a human boiling. Wallace writes about the
...rattling and clanking... of the lobsters while they boil and how their ...claws [scrape] the side of the
kettle as it thrashes..., using onomatopoeias to make the scenario all so real for the reader (Wallace

Descriptive Essay About Hudson Hotel
It s not your top luxury spot, but the Hudson Hotel gets points for being a trendy boutique that offers
you a stay near Central Park, Columbus Circle, Broadway shows, Lincoln Center and Hell s Kitchen
at an affordable price. This 876 room property is not a New York skyscraper with only 24 floors, but it
is a central social hub with an eco art greenhouse designed lobby, dim lit ambiance, and deep warm
Makore wood walls that attract a young adult crowd to its on property lounges, and bars. The Sky
Terrace (open seasonal) offers skyline views of the Empire State Building and the Hudson River,

The Private Park, the hotel s very own eco art nod to central park s neighboring reach is yet another
gem with antique pieces playing off of the lobby s greenhouse inspired theme. The Hudson Bar, one of
the most social areas on the property is a sunken cozy lounge, with over 100 seats and 1700 square
feet of tequila themed Jalisco inspired decor. The room s come small and although they feature flat
screen HDTV, iPod docking station, a desk, and views of either the city, courtyard, or river, they are
viewed as crash pads. Umami burger is the hotel s on property restaurant, which has mixed reviews.
Overall considering its central location, the hotel offers some reasonable rates in a great place in the
city for travelers looking to get out and have fun with the A/B/C/D/1 subway lines about a 3 minute

The Hudson is in the attractive busy area of midtown Manhattan on 58th street between 8th and 9th

Essay On Yellowtone Volcano
Yellowstone Park sits over a large volcano. The Yellowstone volcano is considered to be a super
volcano due to the violence and volume of ash that was produced in one eruption. Super volcano
eruptions can drastically impact the entire planet by causing potentially catastrophic climate change.
There have been no super volcano eruptions in human history. However, there have been many super
volcano eruptions at Yellowstone over the past 18 million years. The super volcano eruptions have
created what is known as the Yellowstone caldera. The last super volcano eruption was 640,000 years
ago. This eruption caused a pillar of ash to rocket into the air as high as 100,00 feet. From that height,
a layer of ash covered the land as far away as the Gulf of Mexico. There were actually two events

During this eruption, hot vapors escaped at temperatures around 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit. Ash was
blown out and covered tens of thousands of miles in volcanic dust. When the initial magma chamber
was finally emptied much of the roof to the chamber caved in causing a caldera that measures 45
miles long by 28 miles wide. Then the magma resurged form two domes. There are some lava flows
that are just 70,000 years old, which is not very old in geologic time. This leads to questions as to
whether the Yellowstone volcano is still active. Seismic studies show that shock waves from
explosions and earthquakes travel through the Earth s crust but is slowed when it passes under a
caldera. There are areas under the caldera where the seismic velocity is slower than normal. There are
spots where the slowdown occurs within depths as shallow as 1 mile. This may be because there is
molten lava in the crust. There are other locations that indicate there is even more magma beneath the
surface as deep as 100 miles. Seismic activity also indicates that there is magma beneath the crust in
the mantle. Uplift is also occurring at about ТН and inch per year

Positive And Negative Effects Of Technology On Learning...
Outcome
How does technology effect the way our generation learns and behaves?
Technology is, by definition The application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes, especially
in industry. We use technology accomplish various tasks in our daily lives, in brief; we can describe
technology as products, processes or organizations. We use technology to extend our abilities, and that
makes people as the most important part of any technological system.
(Use of Technology, 2017) This report identifies how technology effects sleep, the prices and costs of
technology, the positive and negative effects technology has on younger people such as bullying or
learning more at school, the difference between past generations and their use of technology and how/
if technology effects the brain and students learning and behaviour such as memory and attention
spans. A variety of sources including surveys and internet reports/ sites were used to gather
information to be used within this report.
A common statement typically heard is don t go on your phone at night you won t be able to sleep and
as we all know sleep is a really important part of our health. The reason being on our phones or any
other form of device at night prevents us from sleeping is due to the bright colours and screen those
then trick our brains into thinking it is still daylight so we don t feel as tired. (Psychology Today,

Florence Nightingale Accomplishments
In a time that was economically and socially dominated by men, Florence Nightingale was a female
that overcame many obstacles and persevered to become a world renowned social reformer and the
founder of modern nursing. By examining Nightingales life, it is easy to see how she dramatically
redesigned the medical administration of Europe and became the face of modern nursing. This paper
will examine Nightingales major achievements, the influence she had in the 19th century, ability to
conform contemporary ideas, and finally how her accomplishments proved to be revolutionary within
Europe and the world. Born into a wealthy family on May 12, 1820, she knew from an early age that
she wanted to do enter into the medical field of work. Florence experienced many difficulties ... Show

With her families approval, Florence became the superintendent of a nursing home in Harley Street.
The break out of the Crimean War and the Battle of Alma, led to the complete breakdown of medical
arrangements in the hospitals in Scutari. Due to some luck and good timing Florence had the
opportunity, along with 37 other nurses, to travel to Scutari and assist in the hospitals. In 1855, by the
end of her stay in Scutari, she had completely transformed the system in which the hospitals ran
(Strachey, 114). By reorganizing the food, laundry, clothing systems, changing the overall hygiene and
ventilation of the hospitals and fixing administrative issues, the hospitals now ran smoothly and
mortality was down from 42% to 22% (Strachey, 120). Nightingales work did not go unnoticed, as she
returned home to a letter from the Queen and a brooch designed by the Prince Consort. As the years
went on, Florence s health deteriorated, but that did not halt her work within the academic and
political community. She wrote notes on her own titled: Notes affecting the Health, Efficiency, and

Henry Ford Biography Essay
Before 1907 when Henry Ford installed the first assembly line, the early 20th century provided
automobiles for mostly the rich as a showing of keeping up with the Jonseses. The car models were
mostly complicated machines which mostly required a chauffeur knowledgeable on how to operate the
complex automobile. The invention helped reduce a four men work to a one men power. It first took
around more than 12 hours to build one car to 2 hours and about 30 minutes. Henry Ford said that by
the aid of scientific study one man is now able to do somewhat more than four did only a
comparatively few years ago. That line established the efficiency of the method and we now use it
everywhere. The assembling of the motor, formerly done by one man, is now ... Show more content on

In 1902 Henry Ford started the Ford Motor Company with an $28,000 investment. He also smart
planned his success. He didn t really trust the banks that kept his investors at an odd. His early plans
were to offer the bankers who wanted to invest in his company that would offer dealer franchises. This
required the franchise dealers to pay for the automobiles when they were received instead of when
they were sold. This helped him have additional capital to expand his manufacturing enterprise, invest
in research and provide for his dream. Henry Ford stated that I would build a car for the great
multitude. It will be large enough for the family, but small enough for the individual to run and care
for. It will be constructed of the best materials, by the best men to be hired, after the simplest designs
that modern engineering can devise. But it will be low in price that no man making a good salary will
be unable to own one and enjoy with his family the blessing of hours of pleasure in God s great open
spaces. This soon clearly started his dreams he announced in 1907 that soon came true. Henry Ford

Business Impact Analysis Example
Introduction It is notable that the Business Impact Analysis (BIA) is a fundamental tool that provides
business consistency in any enterprise. Why is it fundamental? BIA is necessary for the generation of
disaster recovery plans or for ensuring that an enterprise remains consistent. It permits business
directors to determine information technology processes and critical elements within an organization.
In addition, a BIA describes the period required for an enterprise unit to complete and supply
deliveries to its clients along with any resources necessary to continue business operations. Business
Impact analysis could be relevant in multiple areas. For instance, a business impact analysis could be
relevant in cloud computing. This is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In short, Cloud computing models allow access to computer resources and information anywhere
provided a connection is present. They provide shared pools of sources including networks processing
power, data storage, and specialized user applications. Examples of these services include webmail,
networking sites, online file storage, and online business applications. The technology under
discussion has five main characteristics that enable it to run efficiently. Its first characteristic is the on
demand self service. A consumer has the capacity to unilaterally access services in a timely fashion
devoid of any human interaction with every service provider. Another trait is that the technique has a
broad network access because services are available over the network. It is crucial to point out that
networks are accessible via standard mechanisms that promote use of heterogeneous client platforms.
Therefore, this element improves the efficiency of cloud computing. The third trait is rapid elasticity
where capabilities (of access to information) can be provisioned elastically and released automatically.
It follows that capabilities often appear to be unlimited hence, released to consumers at any time. The
fourth characteristic of cloud computing is resource pooling where computing resources are pooled
using a multi tenant model in order to serve

Remote Sensing Of Texas Education
Remote Sensing in Texas Education
In recent years, Texas education has endured several rounds of reform, advancing, stumbling, bobbing
and weaving, attempting to rebound, only to receive another jab at new curriculum standards or a
punch in the gut of high school dropout rates. While valiant efforts have been made to generate highly
motivated, well organized, effective classrooms, several rifts remain. New programs, implemented to
fight off the fatigue of reform, have only added to the burden, for the 2013 Nation s Report Card
outlines Texas success compared to the nation, revealing the number of Texas public schools with
scores reaching Proficient stand below the national average, a still narrow 34%, and Texas math scores

Less popular, although arguably inevitable, solutions have included increased class sizes, reluctant
teacher layoffs, and general reductions in funds for extra resources. As politicians and educators
continue to dodge the fists of funding deficiency, Texas education continues to suffer, particularly in
disadvantaged regions, for financial poverty often engenders educational poverty. With chaos and
uncertainty crippling the Texas education system, the pursuit of cheap, innovative, compelling
technology expands. Remote sensing, a burgeoning research method for gathering data, has begun to
edge its way into the domain of education as an authentic, multidisciplinary teaching tool, and holds
the capacity to reinvent education; however, cost efficiency, teacher training, information validity, and
other obstacles stand firmly in the path to educational victory. How can remote sensing shape the
educational and socioeconomic disparities afflicting the Texas education system? While remote
sensing, in the rawest meaning of the term, has been alive since the origins of mapping thousands of
years ago, contemporary remote sensing arose with the invention of the camera nearly 200 years ago,
when unprecedented images captured information about various objects and landscapes. Growing
exponentially, this phenomenon reached landmark achievements with the reading of cameras attached
to balloons revealing topographic data and the

Nuclear Power Plants and Nuclear Waste
The purpose of a nuclear power plant is to produce electricity for supporting increases in
consumption. Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) defines nuclear energy as the energy
released by a nuclear reaction, especially by fission or fusion. In general terms, nuclear energy uses
fuel made from mined and processed uranium to make steam and generate electricity (ENEC 2011).
Nuclear power plant currently producing electricity in the U.S include the Pressurized Water Reactor
and the Boiling Water Reactor. To illustrate the importance of nuclear energy to the United States,
20% of our nation s electricity production comes from the 104 commercially operating reactors (Funk
and Socacool 2012). However, security issues surrounding nuclear power lead to the U.S nuclear
regulatory agencies imposing strict regulations on the production of nuclear energy.
As a result, development and construction time of a nuclear power plant is a complex process. Before
an applicant can start building a nuclear power plant, it must receive approval from the U.S Nuclear
Regulatory Commission. Previous regulations required that a nuclear power plant was licensed under
a two step licensing process (NRC 2004). This former process required both a construction permit and
an operating license (NRC 2004). In 1989, the NRC established an alternative licensing process which
formed a joint license between the construction permit and an operating license (NRC 2004).
Following approval from the U.S NRC

Spain s Plights With Authority
Spain s Plights with Authority After the change from the Hapsburg to the Bourbon regime, an effort
was made to re invent the way Spain controlled its colonies. The Bourbons sought to strengthen
authority and increase revenue from its South American Colonies, yet this would only create colonial
unrest and eventual revolution. Spain s economic, political, and social decisions are factors that
eventually lead the colonists to seek other means of governance. Spain s economic decisions were a
key factor in the eventual colonial reasoning to separate from the crown. Spain, upon discovery of the
new world, began vast mining operations extracting and exporting rare earth metals such as gold and
silver. Spain needed these exports to finance the multiple wars it waged with England and later
revolutionary France. By focusing on mining operations, Spain overlooked the possibility of the
agricultural markets that could also bring in much needed revenue. But agriculture in the colonies
were only to be used to feed the people and miners. Many creoles disagreed with Spain s main focus
on mining exports and began to sell some of their crops such as cocao, Oaxaca, and indigo as
contraband. As this trend became more prominent, instead of stopping the sale all together, the farmers
were instead taxed on the contraband they sold. By focusing on gold and silver, Spain also alienated
itself from the rest of the world, and didn t really have anything to offer or trade with the

My Identity, Status And My Worldview
Different personality, believes, identity and behavior makes a person unique. Identity is one s self
representation in the world. Who I am, really makes up my identity. Personal traits make me appear
towards the world. My worldview incorporates of different concepts and suppositions. It helps to
decode my issues in my life. As I continue to evolve, my identity, status and my worldview shape me.
My family and my faith status makes my life worthwhile. It s the love and relationship that keeps me
bounded together with my family. Without a family I am absolutely nothing because they have helped
me through hard times and supported me. As being the oldest child of the family I was always
appreciated and praised for doing remarkable things in my daily life. In grade 8, I had final exams and
during that period of time I was sick with high fever. I was not in a state to prepare for the exams
which caused hopelessness and stress, although my parents supported me and encouraged me to write
the exam on the bases of the things I have learned the entire year. Their brace made me successful and
I got straight A s on the exams. Family status is as important in life as eating food on regular bases.
My family is always ready to support and sacrifice their happiness for me. They complete my world,
thus it makes me confined to my family status. In addition to family status, which makes up most of
my status and identity is my faith status. Inner faith makes me enthusiastic towards life. Just the

An Unspoken Cycle That Determines The Success
When talking about inequality, it should be mentioned that there is an unspoken cycle that determines
the success of the average individual. The cycle goes as follows: education in most cases directly
affects the type of job you have. The type of job you have affects your wealth, which in turn affects
your ability to buy a house (mortgage or not) in a quality area. The quality of the area, then affects the
type of education you get. This is a cycle that while was once racist, now unintentionally constrains
people to the same socioeconomic class as the one they were born into. It just so happens that due to
the previous intentions, many African Americans are trapped in a low socioeconomic class and are
unable to advance. In fact, America today according to a few large studies, is less mobile (moving up
in socioeconomic class) than other comparable nations. One study for example found that around 42%
of American men who were brought up in the bottom fifth of American incomes, stayed there
throughout their lives. This same study found that only around 8% of American men gained access to
the top fifth from the bottom, a number lower than others like the Danes or the British ( Harder for
Americans to Rise From Lower Rungs ). Unfortunately, minorities in America are at the largest
disadvantage economically due to this cycle. From the very beginning of this cycle, specifically
African Americans were legally forced to be separated from the rest of America because of the Jim

The St. James The Apostle Catholic Church
The St. James the Apostle Catholic Church in McDonough, Georgia was my second church visit. I
visited the Catholic Church on Sunday, November 15, 2015 at the eleven o clock service. The church
is located on 1000 Decatur Rd. McDonough, GA 30253. I assumed that the Presbyterian Church was
very different from my community church but the St. James the Apostle Catholic Church experience
was no comparison to the Covenant Presbyterian Church whatsoever.
The first thing that I have noticed about the church is that there was unique artwork all over the
building. There were many men displayed on the front of the church building with different figure
types and wearing different clothes. The church artwork was very detailed and creative. It was a type
of artwork that I have never seen before. I also noticed a huge cross in the center of the church
building that had several figures of men surrounding the church. I had stared at the front of the
building for about five minutes before I finally walked into the church. As people were walking inside
the church, they were in formal attire. Both the men and women were well dressed for the sermon.
Once I walked inside the church, I happened to notice a huge fountain in the center of the isle. The
fountain contained holy water and several people were randomly dipping their finger in the water and
then do a sign of the cross on the chests. I assumed it was a tradition that Catholics did before
attending their seats. Rather than the church having

enough to not allow the bees to slip through the holes. The beekeeper hat as is with other protective
clothing should be white in color. Bees don t consider the white color as a threat. However, just show

Objective
The objective of the research is to identify critical factors which affect online shopping experience the
most.
Literature review
According to Tauber (1972), experiences are an important part of consuming and shopping. Shoppers
are not always simply looking to buy products, but also want to get pleasure from the shopping
activity. This experience is affected by the customer s shopping goals, what they expect, and what
their motivations are (Demangeot Broderick, 2006).
Motivation for shopping online is an important factor to consider when analysing the shopping
experience (Swatman Chin, 2004). Holbrook and Hirschman (1982) established that it is highly
important to create hedonic significance through good experiences in order to toughen up the
relationships with consumers. Customer experience involves engaging several of the customer s
aptitudes to satisfy and create value while he interacts with the organisation, its products and its other
customers. Similarly, an online retailer s role is to establish an appropriate environment to help
customers in gaining a positive experience while shopping online (Pentina et al., 2011). When people
shop online, they are not only consumers but also users of the computer (Demangeot Broderick,

Summary Of Paolo De Matteis sThe Adoration Of The Shepherds
Paolo de Matteis s esteemed work The Adoration of the Shepherds is a large painting, depicting a
classic Christian Nativity scene, that is displayed in the Dallas Museum of Art. In the piece, a dozen or
so individuals surround the newborn Christ and his parents, gazing at him in admiration and paying
him homage while animals look serenely on and angels assemble around the heads of the Holy
Family. The artist employs several classic artistic elements in his painting, such as line, light, color,
and shape, to draw the viewer s focus directly to his intended point of emphasis, the infant Jesus.
One of the most effective principles Paolo de Matteis uses in this painting is his use of lines and
invisible lines to direct the viewer s attention to the child in his mother s arms. The shepherds and
their animals, the Virgin Mary, and Saint Joseph are all instances of invisible lines in this painting, as
their outstretched hands and lines of vision are all pointing to the baby Jesus. For example, the three
women and the child kneeling to the bottom right side of the manger are all staring or pointing to the
upper left, toward Jesus. Moving to the upper right corner of the painting, the ox and the donkey are
directing their gaze to the bottom left, once again at Jesus. The two men to the right of the animals
also point in that direction. In the top and center, Mary and Joseph watch their child, creating yet
another invisible line pointing toward the point of emphasis, while the angels

Contextual Theory Of Interethnic Communication Theory
The distinction of the differences or similarities between the communicator and conversational
partners can influence whether they chose to engage in association or dissociation. These
dissimilarities and resemblances help to shape our perceptions of each other. Through the analysis of
ethnic proximity, ethnic distance, shared goal structure, separate goal structure, and personal network
integration, the situation layer of Kim s Interethnic Theory will be explored.
A Contextual Theory of Interethnic Communication As conceptualized by Young Yun Kim, the
interethnic communication theory describes the multifaceted layers and factors in communication
event. Described as an open system, interethnic communication occurs between communicators and
their interactant(s) who possess characteristic similarities or differences in terms of their ethnic or
identity markers (Kim, 2005). There are four layers to her theory: behavior, communicator, situation,
and environment. All of these layers contribute to how the communicator and their interactant decides
to interact, whether it is associative or dissociative. This paper will focus on the situation layer.
Implanted between the environment and communicator layer, the situation layer represents the
interethnic encounter itself (Kim, 2005, p. 334). Essentially, it is describing the interaction between
the communicator and their conversational partner(s). In this context, the communication can take
form in many ways (e.g., verbal,

Movie Vs Play Analysis
I found the play to be far superior in comparison to the original film version as the movie s writing
glorified modern American consumerism. A post war financial boom brought a great amount of
advertising and promotion, and the movie was overflowing with blatant celebration of products. The
presence of sexism as well of the obvious lack of racially diverse main characters, was a big problem
for me in my terms of likability of the movie. The play was able to strip itself of the gaudiness/lack of
diversity and that left room for a brilliantly crafted sub plot with a well rounded cast and smartly
written script. As A Christmas Story appears to be set in the mid to late 1940 s, during what I must
presume is post World War Two due to the lack ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The movie had zero racial diversity as, any character of racial diversity was a non speaking
background character. That speaks volumes for films made in the 80 s though, as the film and
television industry s diversity in characters only really started to pick up in the 90 s with films and
shows such as, Clueless and The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. By having an African Nova Scotian actor
play a large speaking role such as, Ralphie s friend, Flick, the directors took notice to today s queues
of having a diverse and well rounded cast! I think it would have been very awkward not to, as the need
to teach this generation about diversity and equality for all is extremely important. The writers also
added a new strong and intelligent female lead, Esther Jane! After looking at the IMDB page for the
film, I noticed Esther Jane was not a character in the film. Even if she was, I didn t notice her, at all.
The women in Neptune production were an important component to the story as they interacted with
other main characters that, just never happened in the movie version. Esther Jane, especially was a
strong female character as only being in grade 2, she already had a stance on politics and classic
literature. She and her friend, intimidated even the most terrifying school yard bully, Scott, and was
respected by everyone in the community. Ralphie s mother in the production reminded me of a young
Jackie Kennedy Onassis, not only by the way she was dressed, but by the way she carried herself. She
was kind and caring towards her family, well knowledgable and had a very low temper. The mother in
the movie version was also very kind and understanding but, it seemed she was not in control of
herself or her family. She was annoying and almost held down by her over confident husband. She
didn t stand up for herself in any

The Book Flapper by Joshua Zeitz
Flapper by Joshua Zeitz is a book that tells an epic story about the American women during the time
of the 1920 s. For a better understanding, a flapper would typically be a young girl who blurred the
gender roles by taking on a more masculine lifestyle. They wore their hair short, drank and smoked
frequently, and explored their sexuality. With this behavior, it didn t destroy their femininity; it just
simply provided the society s perception of what a woman should and should not be.
The story starts off with a hopelessly romantic side. It all begins by learning about a seventeen year
old girl named Zelda and a First Lieutenant named Francis Scott Fitzgerald who is known to who they
became to be in modern day history. Zelda can be classified as a wild child. Her summer tan gave her
skin the color of a rose petal, her hair was gold, and her eyes seemed to change color with her
prismatic moods. Scott Fitzgerald was an individual who spent four years at Princeton without earning
his undergraduate degree. He gave little contribution to classroom discussions, and was lazy in all
things but reading and writing. In this novel, Joshua Zeitz is able to educate the readers on the
becoming of new women in America. Zeitz is also able to inform the readers on the evolution and
growth of the liberties associated with the new American women. As one of the themes in the first
section of the book, Zeitz develops a concept by discussing and analyzing the life of CoCo Chanel.

Effects Of Prohibition
Prohibition has made nothing but trouble (Al Capone). The Prohibition Era was significant to the
development of the United States. This was a decade of change and corruption. Prohibition had a
profound impact in the 1920s and on the world today through the effects of alcohol consumption.
Prohibition in the 1920s was remarkably controversial. The 18th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution,
also known as National Prohibition, banned the manufacture, transportation, and sale of intoxicating
liquors ( Prohibition par. 1). The manufacture and distribution of alcoholic beverages was prohibited;
however, the consumption of alcohol was not illegal. Evan Andrews states that, any wine, beer or
spirits Americans had stashed away in January 1920 were theirs to keep and enjoy in the privacy of
their homes (Andrews par. 3). This provision allowed Americans to own alcohol as long as it was not
distributed or traded with anyone. Most people only had a few bottles; however, wealthy drinkers
bought liquor store inventories. Additionally, the Volstead Act, also known as the National Prohibition
Act, provided guidelines that allowed sacramental wine and medicinal liquor (Blocker 237).
Sacramental wine was allowed to be used for religious purposes and medicinal liquor was available
with a physician s prescription. Overall, the provisions in the 18th Amendment allowed corruption to
evolve. Many Americans supported Prohibition in the early 1900s. The 18th Amendment was ratified

a few of the other Nazi killing movies out there.
Fury was another war film directed and written by David Ayer who is known for Training Day , End

Steven Spielberg would have been chosen to direct the film since he is more well known and
considered one of the most influential film personalities out there. Spielberg is best known for Saving
Private Ryan , Jurassic Park , and A.I. Artificial Intelligence . But instead we have the slow rolling plot

Miscarriage Is The Most Common Complication Of Pregnancy
Introduction
Miscarriage is the most common complication of pregnancy in the United States, occurring in 15 20%
of clinically recognized pregnancies, or ~1,000,000 cases annually. Despite its frequency, the majority
of Americans believe that it is a rare complication occurring in 5% or fewer of all pregnancies.
Miscarriage can be an unexpected and emotionally devastating diagnosis for patients and their
partners with studies showing that some women may suffer from psychological morbidity for months
after the miscarriage and even into subsequent pregnancies. Our recent study revealed that those who
have suffered a miscarriage frequently feel guilty, isolated and alone. Additionally, there are

In this follow up study, we sought to assess the influence of celebrity and public figures revelations of
their own loss on the publics perception of miscarriages.
Materials and Methods
A 19 item survey was constructed to assess the effect of public figures revelation of their loss on
public perceptions of miscarriage. Miscarriage was defined as a pregnancy loss occurring earlier than
20 weeks. Four additional items (for a total of 27) were directed to those reporting a personal history
of miscarriage and four additional items were specifically for those reporting recent awareness of
celebrity loss. Both men and women were included in the survey.
The survey was posted online using crowdsourcing web service Amazon.com Inc s MTurk. The full
survey can be seen in Appendix 1. Responders are anonymous, however they are given a unique
identifier by Amazon which allows us to identify if any user has taken the survey more than once. We
used MTurk users with an approval rating of 85% or greater (meaning 85% of their previous work on
the site had been considered good). These parameters were chosen to help improve data quality.
Additional discussion of the use of mechanical turk and parameters used can be found in our previous
work.

Tone Of Richard Cory
The poem Richard Cory by Edwin Arlington Robinson is about a rich man named Richard Cory.
Robinson uses Richard Cory and his appearance to show that not everything is as it may seem. He
uses his word choice, tone, and irony throughout the poem to show the theme, a theme that Cory was
not the man that all of the townspeople thought he was. The diction that the author uses in this poem
plays a great part in conveying the theme. This poem describes how all the people see Richard Cory.
He is portrayed as a gentleman from sole to crown (3). The people see him as an ideal man. People
want to be him. He was clean favored and imperially slim (4). The people of the town saw that Cory
was well groomed and even looked like royalty to them. The people could tell by the way he was
dressed that he was well off, that he had plenty of money. Though he wore nice clothing, he did not
flaunt his money; he did not wear flashy clothes. He was always quietly arrayed (5). ... Show more

They thought that he was everything (11). They wish that they were in his place (12). As the poem

confusion. The reader is able to realize that things are not as they appear. The reader is able to notice
that the people around Cory are very poor; they went without the meat, and cursed the bread (14). This
shift in tone also leaves the reader confused. The reader does not know the true reason why Richard

The Red Headed League Sparknotes
One s ability to use reasoning to solve complications provides a great insight of their traits and
characteristics. One Autumn day, Watson finds Sherlock Holmes talking to a peculiar guest with very
pronounced red hair. As Holmes starts to observe the man, the investigation in the story, The Red
Headed League by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, begins. Doyle begins many of his Sherlock Holmes short
stories with a similar setting, a client providing details of a problem and having Watson and Sherlock
investigate. Obvious and subtle clues are laid out in the beginning, having the reader try to piece it
together. However, as the story progresses towards the end insignificant actions and observations
made by Holmes suddenly becomes significant. It may seem as though Holmes is doing something
peculiar; but in actuality, he is providing himself with clues. In Sir Arthur Conan Doyle s suspenseful
The Red Headed League, he demonstrates the theme of reason and logic with the dynamic
characterization of Sherlock Holmes and Holmes inherent ability to solve mysteries.
Through the characterization of Holmes client, Doyle shows the intuition and cleverness that Sherlock
possesses. In the beginning of the story, a client by the name of Wilson reaches out to Sherlock
Holmes about his strange job at The Red Headed League. As Wilson is discussing about the league,
Holmes starts to make conclusions about him. He says, Beyond the obvious facts that he has at some

I walked past stalls of horses to a new off track thoroughbred named
Damien serenely peering into the aisle. My trainer had asked me to ride him. As I picked his hooves
and curried his chestnut flanks, he was as tranquil as autumn leaves in a gentle breeze until he saw the
saddle, then he became a tornado whirling around the center of the stall.
I lead him by leather reins to the outdoor ring where my trainer would see him work for the first time.
He trotted circles around me and spooked at the wind. I returned to the barn and let him run and buck
so he could burn off extra energy. When I heard my trainer s golf cart stop in front of the barn, I
caught him and prepared to mount. My trainer arrived and held his bridle while I put my foot in the
stirrup. When foot made contact with iron, the horse bolted. He spun himself in circles around my
trainer while I balanced half on, half off struggling to find the saddle and my balance. As soon as I

Gandhi vs Genghis Khan
MAHATMA K. GANDHI VERSUS GENGHIS KHAN
Emre Can Petek, International University of Sarajevo, Sarajevo
April 9, 2013
ABSTRACT
There are so many leaders in this world who shaped the destiny and created a new order for their
countries. Two of very popular leaders are Mahatma Gandhi(India) and Genghis Khan(Mongolia).
This research makes an analysis of these specific leaders, with focusing on their skills and how they
changed the world, the ways they used while they were in charge. This paper will mention their lives
also their strong characteristics, what they have in common or different sides of each. Thus, this paper
will try to reach to an end whose methods are more proper or which one did better jobs.

It became evident that the British could maintain the empire only at enormous cost. At the end of the
Second World War, they saw the writing on the wall, and initiated a number of constitutional moves to
effect the transfer of power to the sovereign State of India. For the first and perhaps the only time in
history, the power of a mighty global empire on which the sun never set , had been challenged and
overcome by the moral might of a people armed only with ideals and courage.
The Cabinet Mission sent by the British government proposed for the bifurcation of India along
communal lines which Gandhi vehemently protested. But eventually he had to relent and on the eve of
independence thousands lost their lives in communal riots. Gandhi urged for communal harmony and
worked tirelessly to promote unity among the Hindus and Muslims. But Mahatma s act of
benevolence angered Hindu fundamentalists and on January 13, 1948 he was assassinated by Hindu
fanatic Nathuram Godse.
GENGHIS KHAN
Genghis Khan, born Temujin, was the founder and Great Khan (emperor) of the Mongol Empire,
which became the largest contiguous empire in history after his demise.
He came to power by uniting many of the nomadic tribes of northeast Asia. After founding the
Mongol Empire and being proclaimed Genghis Khan , he started the Mongol invasions that resulted in
the conquest of most of Eurasia. These included raids or invasions of the Kara Khitan Khanate,
Caucasus, Khwarezmid

The Evolution Of Advertising And Advertising
The Evolution of Advertising
THE EVOLUTION OF ADVERTISING
Advertisements are a huge part of our everyday lives. We see different types of ads everywhere we
look; while watching television, listening to the radio, riding on the bus and even walking around your
school campus. It seems like the whole world is being flooded by advertisements.
Advertising techniques have changed and along with it, the impact they have on each individual s
mind. While there are some similarities between the different kinds of advertisements we see today,
there are also many differences. Advertising has also become more unethical than it was in, let s say,
the 50s. Not all advertisements are brainless; there are a few that are even creative and fun and just
pull the target audience in by entertaining them while selling them a product.
The techniques companies use to sell their products have changed so much in the past 50 years. Every
company has to adapt to the changing times. An example of this is that in the 1950s, companies had to
find a way to appeal mostly to stay at home wives because they were the ones who were home all day
listening to the radio while doing chores or watching the commercials between their soaps. In the
1970s advertisements had to change and find some way to appeal to an increasing amount of feminists
while alluring homemakers also. They have to go along with the changes. In 1994, a new form of
advertising and getting products and services into the world was discovered:

Aboriginal people, but the negative effect of it should not be neglected, since it had completely
changed their life style and badly impacted on their culture.

The Waste Of Waste Management
Society today revolves around consumption and advancement; we are always eager to buy the latest
things on the market, then trash them when its too outdated. Our consumer habits over the years has
changed our environment and created large landfills that have no end. Garbology, by Edward Humes,
exposes the issues pertaining to trash, that society chooses to ignore and informs us on how we are the
problem and solution. The book first highlights Puente Hills, the largest landfill in America, located in
Los Angeles, California. There was a lot of debates on towards Puente Hills because although the
landfill had controversy from citizens and politicians, it was a primary source for trash disposal. The
owner Big Mike, admires the landfill calling it a work of art, but realized that the landfill imposes a lot
of danger to us and our environment. Methods such as burying, burning, and using trash as energy
supply has been tested to reduce the amount of trash in landfills. Companies such as Waste
Management Inc. (largest trash company) was responsible for dealing with trash and landfills, but
failed to emphasize recycling and reusable materials, which increased our landfills. Many suggested
power plants and moving our trash to other locations by train, but those proposals had more cons that
pros and became short lived.
The major social issues presented was over consumption that led to large landfills, overuse of plastics,
and trash in our oceans. Society as a whole face all these

Partnership
Camisha Booker CA 156: Computerized Accounting 11 Partnership vs Sole Proprietorship March 11,
2014 Thinking about starting your own business? Do you prefer to work alone? Or do you prefer to
work with a partner? If you choose to work with a partner then the best business structure for you
would be the partnership structure. First you must ask yourself; do we have the same vision or
objectives on how to run the business? Are we able to communicate well with each other? Most
important question of all, do you trust this individual? If two of these three questions is no then maybe
the partnership structure isn t for you and you should set the business up as a sole proprietorship. The
partnership business structure allows two or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Having discretionary time, more contacts, support and motivation is a big plus when starting a
business. The right partnership has these qualities. When one needs time to spend with family and
friends or even just to get the most important things dealing with the business done, having a partner is
a good ideal because days or weeks can be rotated among the two. By bringing on a partner, you
acquire a new network of contacts and potential customers. If one partner was to died or become
physical impaired while in the partnership agreement the other partner can take over the business
completely or choose to sell the other partner s half of the business (Price, 2012). With sole
proprietorship if the owner becomes impaired or dies the business can result in termination because
there is no one to take over the business (LaMance, 2013) If you are a team player, I say go for the
partnership, but talk things over with your potential partner before making any decisions. Now if you
choose to go in it alone with the sole proprietorship keep in mind that some investors think businesses
started under the sole proprietorship are less professional than any other structure that consist of two
or more people. Works Cited Partnership: Pros and Cons. (2014). Retrieved from Boundless:

As Chimamanda Adichie s The Danger Of A Single Story
I m sorry, but you cannot afford to buy a pretty dress. You cannot because you are poor! That singular
statement haunted me for years. That the word poor was directly tied to my name. A bond that could
not be broken, belittling me every time I thought of it. Poor is such a nasty word; poor is a word that
immediately evokes the thought of food stamps, being depressed, not having food, and living on the
streets. Instead of poor , one should say low income . Coming from a low income family did not
define who I was, although, everyone else thought it did. Growing up in a low income family taught
me how to put myself first, budget my money, how to be a hard worker, and gave me thicker skin.
When one hears the word poor they automatically think a few things, such as living off of food
stamps, having a sad childhood, feeling one cannot succeed in life, and lastly, not being able to get a
college education. As Chimamanda Adichie said in her The Danger of a Single Story Ted talk, So that
is how to create a single story, show a people as one thing, as only one thing, over and over again, and
that is what they become. Although Adichie s speech concerned her spending her childhood in
Nigeria, I feel the same as she does. A single story gets created with many groups and ... Show more

Life soon became very busy with school, attending many extracurricular activities, and working as
many shifts as my managers would give me. I worked so my family s money would go straight to bills
and food and they never had to feel bad about me not being able to go to the movies with my friends,
or go to the mall and get new clothing. Despite popular belief that having a job at such a young age is
terrible and impossible, it taught me how to be a hard worker. This job gained me a lot of experience
and it allowed my family to feel comfortable with the household income. So it was never a burden, but
rather a learning experience that impacted my life in a positive

Food During The Victorian Era
So long as you have food in your mouth, you have solved all questions for the time being Franz
Kafka, this quote is true for many people today. It is basically saying that as long as everyone is
eating, everyone is satisfied. During the Victorian Era, this was especially true for everyone, and they
were constantly making preparations for their next meal. Food during the Victorian Era was very
different from food today.
Nowadays, to make a meal all we do is place something in the microwave, add water, and there is
your meal, but during the Victorian Era it was not quite so easy. Microwaves, ovens, and blenders
were all non existent, and almost none of the electric cooking equipment people have today was
invented. In order to obtain food, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During the Victorian Era, they ate food right in its natural form with almost nothing added onto it for
flavor. However, people overall were not necessarily healthier, considering the percentage of people
who were considered to be in the lower class and lived in cities. The average city working class man s
diet was inconsistent, very basic, and for the most part innutritious (Wohl). People of the working
class in the country usually had to be self reliant when it came to food because they often did not have
the money to buy food. They would raise their own meat and grow their own food. This was actually
quite healthy considering the only added things were just natural spices and flavorings. People who
lived in the city and were in the working class had a much harder time getting nourishing food since
they did not have a place to make their own food. This led to their being distinctly malnourished as
compared to the higher class and people in the country. The people of the higher class, though they
often lived in the city, had a diet similar to those in the country, but with a larger variety of foods.
They could go to restaurants to get their food, have food imported (for a price), or have others raise
their own food for them. It was hard for people of the city working class and higher class to get the
proper nutrients, but those from the farming industry tended to eat much better (Victorian Food). Their
food was very fresh, and almost completely in its natural form which makes it quite healthy. Though
the higher class got a large variety as well, their food had a few added things, and had often been
shipped in which takes nutrients away. The health of food is something that is very different now
because we rarely have food in its natural form, so we are getting less nutrients than some people
during the Victorian

After that scene his room was dark once more toward the end of this scene. In my opinion this was done because he was finally starting to talk and realize the real terror of war and the terror of war isn t happy it s a dark and scary thing. Right before the scene ends they show the soldier continuing his mixed martial arts and he seems to lose it as he punches a mirror and cuts up his hand. They then show him sitting next to his blood covered sheets as he completely breaks down and lets out his emotions and cries. I believe he had reached his breaking point and the drinks he had earlier in the scene had caught up to him and his emotions and the alcohol did not blend well, As seeing his reflection in the mirror seemed to anger him. • 3. David Foster Wallace s Essay Consider The Lobster Throughout the course of David Foster Wallace s essay, Consider the Lobster, he uses many different methods to try and convince his audience in fact it is seemingly inhumane to boil lobsters. Wallace proves to the reader that the proponents of the Maine Lobster Festival, home of the World s Largest Lobster Cooker, support their style of killing the lobster by falsely arguing that lobsters do not feel pain, when in fact they do. By examining the essay, it is apparent that Wallace is writing to more than one audience. One audience that he is writing to is the readers of Gourmet, the magazine that this essay was published in. However, it is important to note that this essay is also being written to those people who would not have read the magazine otherwise, that is the people that who are purely reading this article because it was written by Wallace. Because there is such a broad audience, it is nearly impossible for every piece of evidence given to effect each read the same way. Below I will examine a piece of evidence that appeals to only one audience, as well as evidence that does in fact appeal to both. To begin with, the cab scene is imperative in supporting Wallace s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 5. Essay On Yellowtone Volcano Yellowstone Park sits over a large volcano. The Yellowstone volcano is considered to be a super volcano due to the violence and volume of ash that was produced in one eruption. Super volcano eruptions can drastically impact the entire planet by causing potentially catastrophic climate change. There have been no super volcano eruptions in human history. However, there have been many super volcano eruptions at Yellowstone over the past 18 million years. The super volcano eruptions have created what is known as the Yellowstone caldera. The last super volcano eruption was 640,000 years ago. This eruption caused a pillar of ash to rocket into the air as high as 100,00 feet. From that height, a layer of ash covered the land as far away as the Gulf of Mexico. There were actually two events more ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are some lava flows that are just 70,000 years old, which is not very old in geologic time. This leads to questions as to whether the Yellowstone volcano is still active. Seismic studies show that shock waves from explosions and earthquakes travel through the Earth s crust but is slowed when it passes under a caldera. There are areas under the caldera where the seismic velocity is slower than normal. There are spots where the slowdown occurs within depths as shallow as 1 mile. This may be because there is molten lava in the crust. There are other locations that indicate there is even more magma beneath the surface as deep as 100 miles. Seismic activity also indicates that there is magma beneath the crust in the mantle. Uplift is also occurring at about ТН and inch per year ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

They provide shared pools of sources including networks processing power, data storage, and specialized user applications. Examples of these services include webmail, networking sites, online file storage, and online business applications. The technology under discussion has five main characteristics that enable it to run efficiently. Its first characteristic is the on demand self service. A consumer has the capacity to unilaterally access services in a timely fashion devoid of any human interaction with every service provider. Another trait is that the technique has a broad network access because services are available over the network. It is crucial to point out that networks are accessible via standard mechanisms that promote use of heterogeneous client platforms. Therefore, this element improves the efficiency of cloud computing. The third trait is rapid elasticity where capabilities (of access to information) can be provisioned elastically and released automatically. It follows that capabilities often appear to be unlimited hence, released to consumers at any time. • 11. Nuclear Power Plants and Nuclear Waste The purpose of a nuclear power plant is to produce electricity for supporting increases in consumption. Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) defines nuclear energy as the energy released by a nuclear reaction, especially by fission or fusion. In general terms, nuclear energy uses fuel made from mined and processed uranium to make steam and generate electricity (ENEC 2011). Nuclear power plant currently producing electricity in the U.S include the Pressurized Water Reactor and the Boiling Water Reactor. To illustrate the importance of nuclear energy to the United States, 20% of our nation s electricity production comes from the 104 commercially operating reactors (Funk and Socacool 2012). However, security issues surrounding nuclear power lead to the U.S nuclear regulatory agencies imposing strict regulations on the production of nuclear energy. As a result, development and construction time of a nuclear power plant is a complex process. Before an applicant can start building a nuclear power plant, it must receive approval from the U.S Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Previous regulations required that a nuclear power plant was licensed under a two step licensing process (NRC 2004). This former process required both a construction permit and an operating license (NRC 2004). In 1989, the NRC established an alternative licensing process which formed a joint license between the construction permit and an operating license (NRC 2004). Following approval from the U.S NRC ... • 12. Spain s Plights With Authority Spain s Plights with Authority After the change from the Hapsburg to the Bourbon regime, an effort was made to re invent the way Spain controlled its colonies. The Bourbons sought to strengthen authority and increase revenue from its South American Colonies, yet this would only create colonial unrest and eventual revolution. Spain s economic, political, and social decisions are factors that eventually lead the colonists to seek other means of governance. Spain s economic decisions were a key factor in the eventual colonial reasoning to separate from the crown. Spain, upon discovery of the new world, began vast mining operations extracting and exporting rare earth metals such as gold and silver. Spain needed these exports to finance the multiple wars it waged with England and later revolutionary France. By focusing on mining operations, Spain overlooked the possibility of the agricultural markets that could also bring in much needed revenue. But agriculture in the colonies were only to be used to feed the people and miners. Many creoles disagreed with Spain s main focus on mining exports and began to sell some of their crops such as cocao, Oaxaca, and indigo as contraband. As this trend became more prominent, instead of stopping the sale all together, the farmers were instead taxed on the contraband they sold. By focusing on gold and silver, Spain also alienated itself from the rest of the world, and didn t really have anything to offer or trade with the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The cycle goes as follows: education in most cases directly affects the type of job you have. The type of job you have affects your wealth, which in turn affects your ability to buy a house (mortgage or not) in a quality area. The quality of the area, then affects the type of education you get. This is a cycle that while was once racist, now unintentionally constrains people to the same socioeconomic class as the one they were born into. It just so happens that due to the previous intentions, many African Americans are trapped in a low socioeconomic class and are unable to advance. In fact, America today according to a few large studies, is less mobile (moving up in socioeconomic class) than other comparable nations. One study for example found that around 42% of American men who were brought up in the bottom fifth of American incomes, stayed there throughout their lives. This same study found that only around 8% of American men gained access to the top fifth from the bottom, a number lower than others like the Danes or the British ( Harder for Americans to Rise From Lower Rungs ). • 19. Summary Of Paolo De Matteis sThe Adoration Of The Shepherds Paolo de Matteis s esteemed work The Adoration of the Shepherds is a large painting, depicting a classic Christian Nativity scene, that is displayed in the Dallas Museum of Art. In the piece, a dozen or so individuals surround the newborn Christ and his parents, gazing at him in admiration and paying him homage while animals look serenely on and angels assemble around the heads of the Holy Family. The artist employs several classic artistic elements in his painting, such as line, light, color, and shape, to draw the viewer s focus directly to his intended point of emphasis, the infant Jesus. One of the most effective principles Paolo de Matteis uses in this painting is his use of lines and invisible lines to direct the viewer s attention to the child in his mother s arms. The shepherds and their animals, the Virgin Mary, and Saint Joseph are all instances of invisible lines in this painting, as their outstretched hands and lines of vision are all pointing to the baby Jesus. For example, the three women and the child kneeling to the bottom right side of the manger are all staring or pointing to the upper left, toward Jesus. Moving to the upper right corner of the painting, the ox and the donkey are directing their gaze to the bottom left, once again at Jesus. The two men to the right of the animals also point in that direction. In the top and center, Mary and Joseph watch their child, creating yet another invisible line pointing toward the point of emphasis, while the angels ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Contextual Theory Of Interethnic Communication Theory The distinction of the differences or similarities between the communicator and conversational partners can influence whether they chose to engage in association or dissociation. These dissimilarities and resemblances help to shape our perceptions of each other. Through the analysis of ethnic proximity, ethnic distance, shared goal structure, separate goal structure, and personal network integration, the situation layer of Kim s Interethnic Theory will be explored. A Contextual Theory of Interethnic Communication As conceptualized by Young Yun Kim, the interethnic communication theory describes the multifaceted layers and factors in communication event. Described as an open system, interethnic communication occurs between communicators and their interactant(s) who possess characteristic similarities or differences in terms of their ethnic or identity markers (Kim, 2005). There are four layers to her theory: behavior, communicator, situation, and environment. All of these layers contribute to how the communicator and their interactant decides to interact, whether it is associative or dissociative. This paper will focus on the situation layer. Implanted between the environment and communicator layer, the situation layer represents the interethnic encounter itself (Kim, 2005, p. 334). Essentially, it is describing the interaction between the communicator and their conversational partner(s). In this context, the communication can take form in many ways (e.g., verbal, ... • 21. Movie Vs Play Analysis I found the play to be far superior in comparison to the original film version as the movie s writing glorified modern American consumerism. A post war financial boom brought a great amount of advertising and promotion, and the movie was overflowing with blatant celebration of products. The presence of sexism as well of the obvious lack of racially diverse main characters, was a big problem for me in my terms of likability of the movie. The play was able to strip itself of the gaudiness/lack of diversity and that left room for a brilliantly crafted sub plot with a well rounded cast and smartly written script. As A Christmas Story appears to be set in the mid to late 1940 s, during what I must presume is post World War Two due to the lack ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The movie had zero racial diversity as, any character of racial diversity was a non speaking background character. That speaks volumes for films made in the 80 s though, as the film and television industry s diversity in characters only really started to pick up in the 90 s with films and shows such as, Clueless and The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. By having an African Nova Scotian actor play a large speaking role such as, Ralphie s friend, Flick, the directors took notice to today s queues of having a diverse and well rounded cast! I think it would have been very awkward not to, as the need to teach this generation about diversity and equality for all is extremely important. The writers also added a new strong and intelligent female lead, Esther Jane! After looking at the IMDB page for the film, I noticed Esther Jane was not a character in the film. Even if she was, I didn t notice her, at all. The women in Neptune production were an important component to the story as they interacted with other main characters that, just never happened in the movie version. • 22. The Book Flapper by Joshua Zeitz Flapper by Joshua Zeitz is a book that tells an epic story about the American women during the time of the 1920 s. For a better understanding, a flapper would typically be a young girl who blurred the gender roles by taking on a more masculine lifestyle. They wore their hair short, drank and smoked frequently, and explored their sexuality. With this behavior, it didn t destroy their femininity; it just simply provided the society s perception of what a woman should and should not be. The story starts off with a hopelessly romantic side. It all begins by learning about a seventeen year old girl named Zelda and a First Lieutenant named Francis Scott Fitzgerald who is known to who they became to be in modern day history. Zelda can be classified as a wild child. Her summer tan gave her skin the color of a rose petal, her hair was gold, and her eyes seemed to change color with her prismatic moods. Scott Fitzgerald was an individual who spent four years at Princeton without earning his undergraduate degree. He gave little contribution to classroom discussions, and was lazy in all things but reading and writing. In this novel, Joshua Zeitz is able to educate the readers on the becoming of new women in America. Zeitz is also able to inform the readers on the evolution and growth of the liberties associated with the new American women. As one of the themes in the first section of the book, Zeitz develops a concept by discussing and analyzing the life of CoCo Chanel. She was a French ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 23. Effects Of Prohibition Prohibition has made nothing but trouble (Al Capone). The Prohibition Era was significant to the development of the United States. This was a decade of change and corruption. Prohibition had a profound impact in the 1920s and on the world today through the effects of alcohol consumption. Prohibition in the 1920s was remarkably controversial. The 18th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, also known as National Prohibition, banned the manufacture, transportation, and sale of intoxicating liquors ( Prohibition par. 1). The manufacture and distribution of alcoholic beverages was prohibited; however, the consumption of alcohol was not illegal. Evan Andrews states that, any wine, beer or spirits Americans had stashed away in January 1920 were theirs to keep and enjoy in the privacy of their homes (Andrews par. 3). This provision allowed Americans to own alcohol as long as it was not distributed or traded with anyone. Most people only had a few bottles; however, wealthy drinkers bought liquor store inventories. Additionally, the Volstead Act, also known as the National Prohibition Act, provided guidelines that allowed sacramental wine and medicinal liquor (Blocker 237). Sacramental wine was allowed to be used for religious purposes and medicinal liquor was available with a physician s prescription. Overall, the provisions in the 18th Amendment allowed corruption to evolve. Many Americans supported Prohibition in the early 1900s. The 18th Amendment was ratified on January 29, ... Robinson uses Richard Cory and his appearance to show that not everything is as it may seem. He uses his word choice, tone, and irony throughout the poem to show the theme, a theme that Cory was not the man that all of the townspeople thought he was. The diction that the author uses in this poem plays a great part in conveying the theme. This poem describes how all the people see Richard Cory. He is portrayed as a gentleman from sole to crown (3). The people see him as an ideal man. People want to be him. He was clean favored and imperially slim (4). The people of the town saw that Cory was well groomed and even looked like royalty to them. The people could tell by the way he was dressed that he was well off, that he had plenty of money. As I picked his hooves and curried his chestnut flanks, he was as tranquil as autumn leaves in a gentle breeze until he saw the saddle, then he became a tornado whirling around the center of the stall. I lead him by leather reins to the outdoor ring where my trainer would see him work for the first time. He trotted circles around me and spooked at the wind. I returned to the barn and let him run and buck so he could burn off extra energy. When I heard my trainer s golf cart stop in front of the barn, I caught him and prepared to mount. My trainer arrived and held his bridle while I put my foot in the stirrup. When foot made contact with iron, the horse bolted. For the first and perhaps the only time in history, the power of a mighty global empire on which the sun never set , had been challenged and overcome by the moral might of a people armed only with ideals and courage. The Cabinet Mission sent by the British government proposed for the bifurcation of India along communal lines which Gandhi vehemently protested. Gandhi urged for communal harmony and worked tirelessly to promote unity among the Hindus and Muslims. We see different types of ads everywhere we look; while watching television, listening to the radio, riding on the bus and even walking around your school campus. It seems like the whole world is being flooded by advertisements. Advertising techniques have changed and along with it, the impact they have on each individual s mind. While there are some similarities between the different kinds of advertisements we see today, there are also many differences. Advertising has also become more unethical than it was in, let s say, the 50s. Not all advertisements are brainless; there are a few that are even creative and fun and just pull the target audience in by entertaining them while selling them a product. The techniques companies use to sell their products have changed so much in the past 50 years. Every company has to adapt to the changing times. An example of this is that in the 1950s, companies had to find a way to appeal mostly to stay at home wives because they were the ones who were home all day listening to the radio while doing chores or watching the commercials between their soaps. In the 1970s advertisements had to change and find some way to appeal to an increasing amount of feminists while alluring homemakers also. They have to go along with the changes. With sole proprietorship if the owner becomes impaired or dies the business can result in termination because there is no one to take over the business (LaMance, 2013) If you are a team player, I say go for the partnership, but talk things over with your potential partner before making any decisions. Now if you choose to go in it alone with the sole proprietorship keep in mind that some investors think businesses started under the sole proprietorship are less professional than any other structure that consist of two or more people. • 44. As Chimamanda Adichie s The Danger Of A Single Story I m sorry, but you cannot afford to buy a pretty dress. You cannot because you are poor! That singular statement haunted me for years. That the word poor was directly tied to my name. A bond that could not be broken, belittling me every time I thought of it. Poor is such a nasty word; poor is a word that immediately evokes the thought of food stamps, being depressed, not having food, and living on the streets. Instead of poor , one should say low income . Coming from a low income family did not define who I was, although, everyone else thought it did. Growing up in a low income family taught me how to put myself first, budget my money, how to be a hard worker, and gave me thicker skin. When one hears the word poor they automatically think a few things, such as living off of food stamps, having a sad childhood, feeling one cannot succeed in life, and lastly, not being able to get a college education. As Chimamanda Adichie said in her The Danger of a Single Story Ted talk, So that is how to create a single story, show a people as one thing, as only one thing, over and over again, and that is what they become. Although Adichie s speech concerned her spending her childhood in Nigeria, I feel the same as she does. A single story gets created with many groups and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I worked so my family s money would go straight to bills and food and they never had to feel bad about me not being able to go to the movies with my friends, or go to the mall and get new clothing. Despite popular belief that having a job at such a young age is terrible and impossible, it taught me how to be a hard worker. This job gained me a lot of experience and it allowed my family to feel comfortable with the household income. So it was never a burden, but rather a learning experience that impacted my life in a positive ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. Food During The Victorian Era So long as you have food in your mouth, you have solved all questions for the time being Franz Kafka, this quote is true for many people today. It is basically saying that as long as everyone is eating, everyone is satisfied. During the Victorian Era, this was especially true for everyone, and they were constantly making preparations for their next meal. Food during the Victorian Era was very different from food today. Nowadays, to make a meal all we do is place something in the microwave, add water, and there is your meal, but during the Victorian Era it was not quite so easy. Microwaves, ovens, and blenders were all non existent, and almost none of the electric cooking equipment people have today was invented. In order to obtain food, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During the Victorian Era, they ate food right in its natural form with almost nothing added onto it for flavor. However, people overall were not necessarily healthier, considering the percentage of people who were considered to be in the lower class and lived in cities. The average city working class man s diet was inconsistent, very basic, and for the most part innutritious (Wohl). People of the working class in the country usually had to be self reliant when it came to food because they often did not have the money to buy food. They would raise their own meat and grow their own food. This was actually quite healthy considering the only added things were just natural spices and flavorings. People who lived in the city and were in the working class had a much harder time getting nourishing food since they did not have a place to make their own food. This led to their being distinctly malnourished as compared to the higher class and people in the country. The people of the higher class, though they often lived in the city, had a diet similar to those in the country, but with a larger variety of foods. They could go to restaurants to get their food, have food imported (for a price), or have others raise their own food for them. It was hard for people of the city working class and higher class to get the proper nutrients, but those from the farming industry tended to eat much better (Victorian Food). Their food was very fresh, and almost completely in its natural form which makes it quite healthy. Though the higher class got a large variety as well, their food had a few added things, and had often been shipped in which takes nutrients away. The health of food is something that is very different now because we rarely have food in its natural form, so we are getting less nutrients than some people during the Victorian ...
