Essex life front cover.
1) What codes are conventions are evident
within the text? Graphology is shown here
throughout the layout, font colours and style of
the page. The layout consists of a nature
based image covering the background using
autumnal colours to fit in with the house style
of the text, for example the text is white but
some of the text is yellow and red which helps
portray the seasonal magazine cover the
house style could also show a sense of
happiness and the warmth and relaxation of
their home and surroundings. . The title of the
magazine uses a font which is different the rest
of the text on the page which makes it stand
out against them. The typography is shown by
using different size and style from the selling line to the individual cover lines, which
show the importance of each bit of text and uses an appropriate font style for the text.
2) What meanings are being created by the codes and conventions? The orange
and yellows of the magazine front cover could portray a warm happy sense, because
of the magazine being about the life in the region they live in it could show the
colours to be interpreted as very homely which fits in with the purpose of the
magazine itself.
Double page spread.
1) What codes and conventions are evident within the text?
The graphology of the main image in this
double page spread shows how the
contents of the ‘Essex Life’ is very nature
based and focusing on the outdoor side of
things which targets people who are
interested in that sort of focus. The headline
‘Wildlife protection begins at home’ fits in
with the image of the hedgehog and the
typography is different to the rest of the text
to make it stand out like the headline should
do. The deck is also situated just below the
headline, it is bolder than the rest of the text
to show it is more important than the other
information on the page. The byline also shows a picture of the person who wrote the article,
this is done because he comes from the area so they are giving him more acknowledgement
so he could be recognised by the public. Most of the double page spread is columns of
information on the article and at the right hand bottom of the page gives a small secondary
image again of a hedgehog to back up the text and show what the text is featuring.
2) What meanings are being created by the codes and conventions? The typology
shows how important the concept is due the amount of text shown.
Contents page
1) What codes and conventions
are evident within the text?
Secondary images are one of the main
points of graphology found in the
contents page they are shown to give
the reader an idea of what is inside and
the basic topic of each of the chapters,
the captions are also portrayed next to
the images to inform the reader what
the image is showing. Columns are
also used to section out the text to
make it clear where each page features
in what chapter. The masthead is
another type of typography used in the
contents page which informs the reader what the double page is about as well making one of
the most important pages stand out and very easy to find.
2) What meanings are being created by the codes and conventions?
The secondary images in this page are meant to attract the reader and make them want to
read on, as well as giving the reader an idea of what's included in the magazine. The
columns are used to make the layout organized so the readers are easily able to find what
they are looking for. The masthead gives a basic description of the page to make it easy to
find in the many pages.
Easy Living - front cover.
1) What codes are conventions are evident
within the text? The masthead is big and bold
in a vibrant colour which stands out against the
background and the colour appeals to the
target audience the magazine is aimed at which
would be mainly woman from the ages of 18-
40. The main images if of a woman which also
fits in with the target audience it is also very
clear and isn't blocked out by any of the cover
lines. The cover lines are used on the front
cover to show what's included inside the
magazine for example one of the cover lines
‘Brilliant shopping ideas, shoes, bags, dresses.’
Which portrays the reader what they can find
inside without actually opening the magazine
up. Screamers are also shown on the front
cover to entice the reader for example ‘New
Ways To Be Happy’ as well as the barcode shown to the right hand side.
2) What meanings are being created by the codes and conventions? All of these codes
and conventions shown on the front cover page are used to entice the reader to buy the
product and make it stand out against the other magazines.
Contents page- What codes are conventions are evident within the text?
In the contents page there are many
secondary images to show what each
section is about as well as columns to
identify them, the images are paired
with captions to identify what they are
about and fit in with what the magazine
and what the aim of the magazine if
for, they intrigue the target audience of
women by using images such as
lipsticks to attract them.
2) What meanings are being created
by the codes and conventions? All
of these codes and conventions are
ways of attracting the target audience
to read and look at the magazine they
have created which is a main point I will need to achieve when creating my own magazine.
Double page spread-
What codes are conventions are
evident within the text?
The headline colours match the colour of
the main image which looks really good
and fits in with the house style of the
page, it is also really bright and bold
which really stands out against the white
background of the page. The double
page uses a deck just under the headline
to give more important added information
about the following columns of text on
the next page. This page also has a
byline to inform the reader who wrote the
article and adds extra information so the
reader should be able to connect with the
text more. The subject of this article
really fits in with the target audience due to the fact it is based on babies, the primary
audience for the magazine would be woman in the 30-40 age category which would be
mainly women of the motherly figure so basing the article on babies and egg donations
would really catch the eyes of women of that age.
2) What meanings are being created by the codes and conventions?
The codes and convention are used here to make the magazine look professional and how it
should look, for example the headline is big and bold which means it should be the most
important eye catching part of the double page spread which is what the headline should do.
The graphology of the image also gives visual evidence to what the information in the right
hand side page says before reading it.
Homes and Gardens magazine-Front cover
1) What codes are conventions are evident within the
text?
The house style of this front cover consists of navy grey
and white which is the colour scheme I was going for
when creating my own magazine. This scheme works
really well as it is the same colours as the main image
covering the page. The selling line reads the name of the
magazine brand ‘Home & Gardens’ which is shown in
white to stand out against the dark background. The
masthead is also bold and stands out against the light
area of the picture behind it. Screamers and cover lines
are also seen on the front cover to attract the reader and
make then want to turn the pages and read what inside.
The picture is also used as an advertising technique to
show someone looking at the front cover what's inside
and make them want to read on. The barcode is also something you would need to add to
the front cover.
2) What meanings are being created by the codes and conventions?
Looking at the front cover of magazines I have found that all of the codes and conventions
used are mainly to attract the readers, the primary target audience would be mainly aimed at
married couples from the age of 25-40 who want to be involved in inspiration in creating a
home.
Contents page-
1) What codes are conventions are evident within the
text? The image is the main subject shown on the page, it
is of home furnishings which will attract the target audience
and fits in with the colour scheme and looking similar to the
front cover. The masthead reads ‘H&G contents’ telling the
audience directly what they are looking at followed by
columns of text to give the reader information on
whereabouts they will need to be looking for what they want
to be reading about which is essential in magazines.
2) What meanings are being created by the codes and
conventions?
The codes and conventions here are used to inform the
reader about the subjects that the magazine will be focusing
on. The graphology such as the image entice the readers
and advertise what the sponsoring companies have to offer
so they can see it visually while the typography uses terminology to make them read on and
make them aware of where to find the chosen subject they are looking for.
Double page spread-
1) What codes are conventions are
evident within the text?
The masthead gives us a basic idea to
what the double page spread will be
about in this case ‘Natural Selection’.
The main image fills up most of the right
hand side of the spread which includes a
landscape image of a lounge to give
inspiration to the readers. It shows a
small deck underneath the masthead to
add extra information about the reader
having to read the whole thing to get the
point. The byline is also shown with a
primary image of the writer underneath
the deck telling the reader exactly who wrote the article and adding extra information about
the article. Captions are also used about the main image to show what the picture is showing
and where to get the items from.
2) What meanings are being created by the codes and conventions?
The codes and conventions in this double page spread are to advertise companies who work
with them for instance the captions of the images describe where the furniture and objects
come from including the price which will really advertise the products.

Genre existingproductanalysis

  • 1. Genre: Existing product analysis- Essex life front cover. 1) What codes are conventions are evident within the text? Graphology is shown here throughout the layout, font colours and style of the page. The layout consists of a nature based image covering the background using autumnal colours to fit in with the house style of the text, for example the text is white but some of the text is yellow and red which helps portray the seasonal magazine cover the house style could also show a sense of happiness and the warmth and relaxation of their home and surroundings. .
