Introduce your media product
and it's purpose
▪ For our A2 final piece we created a teaser trailer of a film that we
created as part of a marketing campaign for a titled film called
'Casey's Journal.' The purpose of the teaser trailer is to attract
an audience to make them want to come watch our film. As well
as a teaser trailer we created a magazine cover and a film
poster.

Define Genre
▪ Genre is a way of categorising texts in our
media saturated genre.
▪ The genre of our film is a teen drama.

Relate genre theory to your media
product
▪ Rick Altman argues that genre is defined in terms of either
semantic elements, which are certain media language
(props/costume) and syntactic elements which are certain
ideologies and narratives.
▪ Applying this to my teaser trailer the genre is suggested through
symantic elements such as the diary Casey writes in which was
designed to look like a teenagers book, by using bright colours
and bold shapes.

Relate genre theory to your media
product
▪ Stephen Neale says genre is about repetition and difference:
particluar features which are characteristics of a genre are not
normally unique to it; it is their relative prominence, combination
and functions which are distinctive.
▪ Bullying within a teen drama is very conventional, or some sort
of conflict between two or more characters. For example, the
real media text of 'A Girl Like Her' and 'Reality High'. The
characters are also conventional due to the new girl ('Mean
Girls'), the popular girl (Reality High).

Lacey's Repertoire of Elements
▪ He provides a useful framework to follow when analysing genre. Lacey works
through these 5 areas to identify recognisable elements of genre in each:
Setting, Character, narrative, iconography and style.
▪ Narrative- Structure of the story/themes (conflict between characters, bullies
PoW)
▪ Characters- (hero/villain, popular girl/new girl)
▪ Setting- teen dramas commonly in 'High School'
▪ Iconography- films contain visual and audial images, which become instantly
recognisible and associates with genre – Westers (guns and hats)
▪ Style- describes the way things are presented. Camera angle, editing, lighting
and use of colour.
