Genre and Target Audience
Sam Young
The Walking Dead is a TV adaption
of the graphic novel of the same
name that started in 2003 and is a
monthly comic book series, at the
moment it is on its 135th issue. The
show aired in 2010 and at the
moment is half way through its 5th
season. The show is set in America
and follows Policeman Rick
Grimes who has just woken up
from a coma. The show revolves
around his group and there
struggle with zombies and other
survivors in the zombie
apocalypse. The show airs on AMC
in America and FX in the UK.
Robert Kirkman
Robert Kirkman initially created The Walking Dead as
the zombie film that never ends, he wanted to see
what would happen after the credits. He also states
that the show and comic focus on the drama of the
people the zombies are just added characters and
dilemmas. Also in the world of The Walking Dead there
is no such things as zombie, the characters don’t know
anything about zombies that’s why the characters
never refer to the zombies as actual zombies the give
them nicknames like biters and geeks.
Themes and Genre
The genre of The Walking Dead is horror, thriller,
suspense, and drama. The theme of The Walking Dead
is how people would coup in a zombie apocalypse,
what they characters would do to survive and how they
react to the zombies and other humans in the
apocalypse.
Target Audience
The target audience for The Walking Dead I would say is teens,
young adults and adults. The show is 18 rated and gets shown on
cable TV at 10 o’clock. The content of the show is very gory,
graphic and has adult themes which very much perfect for teens
and adults interested in horror and gore. The TV networks FX
and AMC content very much focus on great TV drama and there
demographic is mostly teens and adults.
Keynotes
The Walking Dead is perfect example of horror, gore and drama
for the small screen. The special effects make up for the zombies
is brilliant at making the show feel realistic and keeping you in
that world. The weak part of the show is the CIGI, which really
takes away from scenes and you can clearly see that its CIGI.
