Analysis of Genre: Lacey’s Repertoire of Elements
O.S
In his book Narrative and Genre: Key Concepts in Media Studies, (Palgrave, Macmillan), Nick Lacey
defines genre elements as constituting the 5 key areas below:
 setting
 character
 narrative
 iconography
 style
When analysing texts, use Lacey’s repertoire of genre elements as a guide. Fill in the boxes below,
making notes on the genre conventions that you see
Genre elements Conventions
Setting- mise en scene/
location
New York, looks like a saloon bar and it is black and white, an action
setting is immediately created when three men come in and start
shooting the bar staff
Characters –
representations,
stereotypes, behaviour,
body language, specific
actors/stars
Liam Nelson plays a private detective (obviously) but previously was an
ex-police officer (stereotype) also bad guys which are always in action
movies. Body language is quick and fast movements.
Narrative events –how
is the narrative ordered
and structured?
Is it elliptical/enigmatic
(elements left out to
intrigue/entice the
audience)
It starts off with “I was off duty one day in this bar in Washington
heights” and he carries on talking slow then ends with “a couple of guys
came in to rob the place” so at the beginning it pulls you in because he’s
building suspension and then it surprises you like you expected when it
finished with the introduction of the bad guys and then added shooting
effects in to entice you. The narrative is built like a story, he’s slowly
telling a story and you find out that he is saying it to a little boy who later
says “why aren’t you a cop anymore” and that was him telling his past
tense story. Then you see him meeting with a man who says “so you’re a
private detective” and it brings things into focus for you.
Iconography –Well
known or recognisable
people/objects/buildings
mise en scene/ props,
costume, setting,
symbolic codes
Liam Nelson is a well known and recognisable person especially in this
movie genre because he has played detectives before and has mostly
been involved in kidnapping of people, mainly girls, so when the trailer
was first shown to me and I seen Liam nelson I was thinking ‘this is
definitely going to be related to a kidnapping’. Also you see a little girl
with dark hair in a red duffle coat, and a dog lead in her hand maybe with
a dog at the other end of it and then a man in a dark coat behind her, this
looks to me like it is pastiche because that symbolises little red riding
hood and little red riding hood is remotely about child abduction, and to
add that in isn’t a coincidence it must be a subliminal message.
Analysis of Genre: Lacey’s Repertoire of Elements
STYLE: Technical and
audio codes – camera
use, editing,
diegetic/non diegetic
sound, sfx. Mise en
scene/lighting, colour
The colour of the setting at the start is black and white because it’s a
flashback of his past, then it changes to colour and then there is a lot of
close up camera footage when it is focusing on someone’s face or what
they’re doing with their hands. There is a lot of fast movement with the
camera used when there’s shooting or action going on, they also use
really wide shots and long shots from far away positions to show what’s
going on from above so you can see birds eye view.
Summarise how the above helps to define genre in the text
All of the above puts a lot into perspective for me because it all seems very criminal and dangerous
and that can only mean that it’s an action or an action thriller which I can’t decide between because
it is quiet scary with the man jumping off the building so suddenly and the woman screaming, but
mostly the iconography and the narrative helped me define what genre this movie is and it’s not as if
Liam Nelson has ever been placed in another genre that’s not to do with crime.
Name of text: Genre: Action Horror
Target audience for walk amongst tomb stones
I think the target audience for this movie is probably teenagers to the elderly because my nana loves
Liam Nelson films and so do I, so probably age 16-60, even though it’s certificate is 15 I don’t think
many 15 year olds will be interested in this or understand it very much, not that they’re too
immature but they haven’t matured enough to understand the general message.
