Stem cell therapy involves inserting stem cells into injured areas to produce new cells and has been used to treat conditions such as cerebral palsy, Parkinson's disease, and cancers. For spinal cord injuries, researchers are exploring therapies using bone marrow stem cells, cord blood cells, and other cell types which show promise in repairing damage in clinical trials.

Organoids are small 3D tissues that mimic the function of organs. They were first developed in 2007 and have since been used to model many organs including the brain, pancreas, and heart. While organoids are still in the early stages of research, they show promise for medical and scientific uses. Organoids are made by harvesting stem cells from an organ and culturing them in a gel environment where they self-organize into ball-like structures that resemble miniature organs. Researchers hope organoids can be used for drug testing and personalized medicine without the need for animal testing. As techniques for growing organoids continue to advance, so too will their potential applications.

Embryonic stem cell
Embryonic stem cells (ESCs) are stem cells derived from the undifferentiated inner mass cells of a human embryo.
Embryonic stem cells are pluripotent, meaning they are able to grow (i.e. differentiate) into all derivatives of the three primary germ layers: ectoderm, endoderm and mesoderm.
In other words, they can develop into each of the more than 200 cell types of the adult body as long as they are specified to do so.
Embryonic stem cells are distinguished by two distinctive properties: their pluripotency, and their ability to replicate indefinitely.
ES cells are pluripotent, that is, they are able to differentiate into all derivatives of the three primary germ layers: ectoderm, endoderm, and mesoderm.
These include each of the more than 220 cell types in the adult body.
Pluripotency distinguishes embryonic stem cells from adult stem cells found in adults; while embryonic stem cells can generate all cell types in the body, adult stem cells are multipotent and can produce only a limited number of cell types.
Additionally, under defined conditions, embryonic stem cells are capable of propagating themselves indefinitely.
This allows embryonic stem cells to be employed as useful tools for both research and regenerative medicine, because they can produce limitless numbers of themselves for continued research or clinical use.
Because of their plasticity and potentially unlimited capacity for self-renewal, ES cell therapies have been proposed for regenerative medicine and tissue replacement after injury or disease.
Diseases that could potentially be treated by pluripotent stem cells include a number of blood and immune-system related genetic diseases, cancers, and disorders; juvenile diabetes;
Parkinson's; blindness and spinal cord injuries.
Besides the ethical concerns of stem cell therapy, there is a technical problem of graft-versus-host disease associated with allogeneic stem cell transplantation.
However, these problems associated with histocompatibility may be solved using autologous donor adult stem cells, therapeutic cloning, stem cell banks or more recently by reprogramming of somatic cells with defined factors (e.g. induced pluripotent stem cells).
Other potential uses of embryonic stem cells include investigation of early human development, study of genetic disease and as in vitro systems for toxicology testing.

STEM CELLS IN HUMAN EXFOLIATED DECIDUOUS TEETH(SHED)
- Recent studies have shown that stem cells from human exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHED) can develop into more types of body tissue than other stem cell sources.
- SHED are a promising source of stem cells because they can be easily collected from discarded baby teeth, have a high proliferation rate, and may be useful for treating a variety of conditions through cell therapy and tissue regeneration.
- It is advantageous for parents to bank their child's SHED now while they are young and healthy to provide a guaranteed stem cell donor source for any future medical needs.
Dental Stem Cells & Their Applications
Cultured skin substitutes prepared from cultured skin cells and biopolymers can reduce the need for donor skin grafts and have been shown to effectively treat excised burns, burn scars, and congenital skin lesions. Cultured skin substitutes generate skin phenotypes in the lab and restore tissue function and systemic homeostasis when implanted. Healed skin from cultured skin substitutes is smooth, soft and strong, though pigmentation may be irregular. Cultured skin substitutes close 67 times the area of donor skin compared to less than 4 times for split-thickness skin grafts, and result in similar qualitative outcomes.
Stem cell therapy in cleft lip and palate
1) The document discusses using mesenchymal stem cells for alveolar bone tissue engineering to reconstruct the bone defect in cleft lip and palate patients.
2) A clinical trial was conducted with 5 patients where stem cells from deciduous dental pulp were combined with a collagen and hydroxyapatite biomaterial and grafted into the alveolar cleft region.
3) Primary outcomes included quantitative analysis using CT scans to measure bone formation before and after surgery, and qualitative analysis to observe canine eruption through the regenerated bone.
Organoids: A Foremost Hope For The Future
This is my short presentation in one of my university classes. It's obvious that the future of the stem cell biology is tightly engaged with organoids and they will absolutely change the way science is going to.

Regenerative medicine
Regenerative medicine uses stem cell therapy and tissue engineering to replace damaged cells and repair organs. It aims to treat age-related diseases by generating replacement cells from stem cells. Regenerative medicine works by isolating cells, manipulating and expanding them, and transplanting the modified cells back into patients to replace malfunctioning cells. Pioneers in the field have used this approach to successfully engineer tissues like bladders and windpipes. Induced pluripotent stem cells allow adult cells to be reprogrammed and have potential for personalized regenerative medicine without ethical concerns of embryonic stem cells. Regenerative medicine holds promise for treating many currently incurable diseases.
Grow sperm egg
Researchers have created primordial germ cells that give rise to eggs and sperm from human embryonic stem cells for the first time. This was done by culturing the stem cells under controlled conditions for a week. The researchers also showed these early stage sex cells can be created from adult skin cells, raising the possibility of making genetically matched sex cells. The next step will be injecting the cells into mouse ovaries and testes to see if they fully develop. This breakthrough could help understand age-related diseases, fertility problems, and allow for genetically matched IVF therapies.

Cancer and other diseases will be treated with personalized, cell-based therapies using techniques like DNA chips, nanoparticles, stem cells, and gene editing. Organ development may be possible using 3D printing, cells, and scaffolds. Cellular medicine has many therapeutic applications today including treatments for immune disorders using regulatory T-cells and cytokines. The future of medicine is shifting to a more personalized approach using cellular technologies.
Regenerative medicine
Regenerative medicine uses stem cell therapy and tissue engineering to replace damaged cells and repair organs. It aims to treat age-related diseases by generating replacement cells from stem cells. Regenerative medicine works by isolating cells, manipulating and expanding them, and transplanting the modified cells back into patients to replace malfunctioning cells. Pioneers in the field have used this approach to successfully engineer tissues like bladders and windpipes. Induced pluripotent stem cells allow adult cells to be reprogrammed and have potential for personalized regenerative medicine without ethical concerns of embryonic stem cells. Regenerative medicine holds promise for treating many currently incurable diseases.
Grow sperm egg
Researchers have created primordial germ cells that give rise to eggs and sperm from human embryonic stem cells for the first time. This was done by culturing the stem cells under controlled conditions for a week. The researchers also showed these early stage sex cells can be created from adult skin cells, raising the possibility of making genetically matched sex cells. The next step will be injecting the cells into mouse ovaries and testes to see if they fully develop. This breakthrough could help understand age-related diseases, fertility problems, and allow for genetically matched IVF therapies.

The introduction of DLAU and the CCB & CCX licensing model caused quite a stir in the HCL community. As a Notes and Domino customer, you may have faced challenges with unexpected user counts and license costs. You probably have questions on how this new licensing approach works and how to benefit from it. Most importantly, you likely have budget constraints and want to save money where possible. There’s only 2 pages dedicated to stem cell information, but it covers all the basics. Important words in relation such as “embryo” and “multipotent” are in bold lettering which is very helpful. The pages contain a high magnification picture of blood stem cells and a fantastic picture of a human embryo. This is an excellent book worth giving a quick read to gain knowledge on stem cells. The tutorials are easy to follow and not extremely advanced in scientific terms, which makes it easy for teens to comprehend. Throughout the website there are plenty of charts and pictures that provide efficient visual learning. There are many opportunities to get involved in learning about stem cells with different articles, videos and discussions.
