1. GENE INTERACTION
• Introduction
• Types of gene interaction
• Epistatic and hypostatic gene
• Classification of epistatic gene interaction
2. MULTIPLE ALLELES
• Introduction
• Characteristics of multiple alleles
• Examples of Multiple alleles
INTRODUCTION
• Defination
The phenomenon of two or more genes affecting the expression of each
other in various ways in the development of a single character of an
organism is known as gene interaction
• Most of the characters of living organisms are controlled/ influenced/
governed by a collaboration of several different genes.
• Mendel and other workers assumed that characters are governed by single
genes but later it was discovered that many characters are governed by two
or more genes.
• Such genes affect the development of concerned characters in various
ways; this lead to the modification of the typical dihybrid ratio (9:3:3:1) or
trihybrid ratio(27:9:9:9:3:3:3:1).
• In gene interaction, expression of one gene depends on expression(presence or
absence) of another gene.
TYPES OF GENE INTERACTIONS
• Gene interactions can be classified as
1. Allelic/ non epistatic gene interaction - This type of interaction gives the
classical ratio of 3:1 or 9:3:3:1
2. Non-allelic/ epistatic gene interaction - In this type of gene interaction
genes located on same or different chromosome interact with each other for
their expression
Discovery of non allelic gene interaction has been made after Mendel
and can be best understood by studying phenotypic trait of gene
EPISTATIC AND HYPOSTATIC GENE
Epistatic gene
When a gene or locus which suppress or mask the
phenotypic expression of another gene at another locus such gene
is know as epistatic gene.
Hypostatic g1
ene
The gene or locus which was suppressed by a epistatic
gene was called hypostatic gene
CLASSIFICATION OF EPISTATIC GENE
INTERACTION
• Epistatic gene interaction Gene is classified as follow on the
basis manner by which concerned genes influence the expression
of each other.
 Supplementary gene action (9:3:4)
 Complementary gene action (9:7)
 Inhibitory gene action (13:3)
 Duplicate gene interaction (15:1)
 Masking gene action (12:3:1)
 Polymeric gene action (9:6:1)
SUPPLEMENTARY GENE ACTION
• In supplementary gene interaction, the dominant allele of one
of two gene governing a character produces phenotypic effect
• However dominant allele of the other gene does not produce a
phenotypic effect on its own.
• But when it is present with dominant allele of the first gene it
modifies the phenotypic effect produced by that gene.
• For example development of agouty (gray) coat color in mice.
Dominant allele- C produces Coloured phenotype while dominant allele A
produces no phenotype (albino) but when dominant allele A present with C it
produces agouti (grey) phenotype.
COMPLEMENTARY GENE INTERACTION
• If both gene loci have homozygous alleles and both of them
produce identical phenotypes the F2 ratio become 9:7 instead
9:3:3:1
• In such case, the genotype aaBB,aaBb,Aabb, aabb produce one
phenotype.
• Both dominant alleles when present together each other are
called complementary genes and produce a different phenotype.
In sweet pea Presence of genes CC, cc ,PP‘and pp in homozygous
condition produces no color (white) b,
ecause expression of
chromogen doesn'toccur in homozygous condition while expression
of chromogen occurs when these two genes present in heterozygous
condition
INHIBITORY GENE ACTION
• When dominant allele of one gene locus (B) in homozygous
(BB) and heterozygous (Bb) condition produce the same
phenotype the F2 ratio becomes 13:3 instead of 9:3:3:1
• While homozygous recessive (bb) condition produces different
phenotype.
• Homozygous recessive (bb) condition inhibits phenotypic
expression of other genes so know as inhibitory gene action.
DUPLICATE GENE INTERACTION
• When dominant allele of both gene loci produce the
same phenotype without cumulative effect.
• In that case the ratio becomes 15:1 instead of 9:3:3:1.
• Duplicate gene interaction occurs in shepherds purse
plant.
In shepherds purse plant seed capsule occurs in two
shapes i.e triangular and ovoid shapes.
Ovoid shapes seed capsule occurs when both genes are
present in homozygous recessive condition
MASKING GENE ACTION
• When out of two genes, the dominant allele (e.g., A) of one gene
masked the activity of allele of another gene (e.g., B)
• Then A gene locus is said to be epistatic to the B gene locus
• Dominant allele A express itself only in the presence of either B or b so
such type of epistatic is know as dominant epistatic
• The allele of hypostatic locus express only when the allele of epistatic
locus present in homozygous recessive condition.
POLYMERIC GENE ACTION
•The completely dominant genes controlling a trait produce
identical phenotypes when their dominant alleles are present
with homozygous recessive condition of the other .
•But when dominant alleles of both the genes are present
together their phenotypic effect is enhanced as if the effect of
two of genes were additive.
•A cross between disc shape ( AABB ) and long shape
( aabb ) strains produced disc shape fruits in F1.
• Inter mating of F1 plants with disc, spherical and long
shape fruits in 9:6:1 ratio in F2.
INTRODUCTION
• A Gene is the basic physical and functional unit of heredity that controls a
particular trait of an organism
• An allele is a alternative form of a same gene located on same locus on the
homologous chromosomes.
• Alleles were first defined by Gregor Mendel in the Law of Seggregation.
• During his study on genetics, Mendel also assumed only two alleles of one
trait
• Three or more alternative forms of the same gene are known as Multiple
alleles. Their inheritence pattern is called Multiple allelism.
MULTIPLE ALLELES
• Alleles control the same characters and occupy the same locus.
• Multiple alleles originate due to mutation.
• All the alleles of the gene together constitute multiple allelic
series.
• In multiple allelic series, wild type allele is dominant over the
other allele.
• There is no crossing over.
• Crossed alleles no attevation.
EXAMPLES OF MULTIPLE ALLELES
• HumanABO Blood group
• Coat colour in Rabbits
• Coat colour in mice
• Self incomaptibility alleles in plants.
• LOZENGE eye colour in Drosophila
INHERITANCE OF HUMAN ABO BLOOD GROUP
• Human ABO blood group system was discovered in 1900 by
Karl Landsteiner.
• InABO system human blood is grouped under 4 blood groups,
A , B , AB and 0 .
• The grouping is made on the basis of antigen (Antigen-A and
Antigen-B) and antibody (Anti-A and Anti-B).
Blood Group Antigen on RBC Antibodies in serum
A A Anti-B
B B Anti-A
AB A and B Nil
O Nil Anti-A and Anti-B
GENOTYPES OF HUMAN ABO BLOOD GROUP
• In 1925 Bernstein, discovered that theABO blood group system is
detemined by a multiple allelic series of the gene I.
 The gene I has three alleles, IA, IB, IO
 The allele IA and IB are co-dominant.
 The allele IA and IB are dominant over IO
Alleles Genotype Phenotype

APPLICATIONS OFABO BLOOD GROUP
• Blood transfusion.
• Disputed parentage.
• Identification of culprits.
• In medicological cases.
• In knowing susceptibility to disease
 Group 0 - duodenal cancer
 GroupA- Carcinoma of stomach, pancreas &salivary
glands.
INHERITANCE OF COAT COLOUR IN
RABBITS
• Coat colour of rabbit is under the control of a multiple allelic
series .In rabbits there are five coat patterns:
 Agouti
 Chinchilla
 Light grey
 Himalayan
 Albino
• These coat patterns are controlled by the Gene “C” which has
four allele which form a multiple allelic series
.
• Four alleles produce ten genotypes which determine five
coat patterns.

  • 2. OUTLINE 1. GENE INTERACTION • Introduction • Types of gene interaction • Epistatic and hypostatic gene • Classification of epistatic gene interaction 2. MULTIPLE ALLELES • Introduction • Characteristics of multiple alleles • Examples of Multiple alleles
  • 3. INTRODUCTION • Defination The phenomenon of two or more genes affecting the expression of each other in various ways in the development of a single character of an organism is known as gene interaction • Most of the characters of living organisms are controlled/ influenced/ governed by a collaboration of several different genes. • Mendel and other workers assumed that characters are governed by single genes but later it was discovered that many characters are governed by two or more genes. • Such genes affect the development of concerned characters in various ways; this lead to the modification of the typical dihybrid ratio (9:3:3:1) or trihybrid ratio(27:9:9:9:3:3:3:1). • In gene interaction, expression of one gene depends on expression(presence or absence) of another gene.
  • 4. TYPES OF GENE INTERACTIONS • Gene interactions can be classified as 1. Allelic/ non epistatic gene interaction - This type of interaction gives the classical ratio of 3:1 or 9:3:3:1 2. Non-allelic/ epistatic gene interaction - In this type of gene interaction genes located on same or different chromosome interact with each other for their expression Discovery of non allelic gene interaction has been made after Mendel and can be best understood by studying phenotypic trait of gene
  • 5. EPISTATIC AND HYPOSTATIC GENE Epistatic gene When a gene or locus which suppress or mask the phenotypic expression of another gene at another locus such gene is know as epistatic gene. Hypostatic g1 ene The gene or locus which was suppressed by a epistatic gene was called hypostatic gene
  • 6. CLASSIFICATION OF EPISTATIC GENE INTERACTION • Epistatic gene interaction Gene is classified as follow on the basis manner by which concerned genes influence the expression of each other.  Supplementary gene action (9:3:4)  Complementary gene action (9:7)  Inhibitory gene action (13:3)  Duplicate gene interaction (15:1)  Masking gene action (12:3:1)  Polymeric gene action (9:6:1)
  • 7. SUPPLEMENTARY GENE ACTION • In supplementary gene interaction, the dominant allele of one of two gene governing a character produces phenotypic effect • However dominant allele of the other gene does not produce a phenotypic effect on its own. • But when it is present with dominant allele of the first gene it modifies the phenotypic effect produced by that gene. • For example development of agouty (gray) coat color in mice.
  • 8. Dominant allele- C produces Coloured phenotype while dominant allele A produces no phenotype (albino) but when dominant allele A present with C it produces agouti (grey) phenotype.
  • 9. COMPLEMENTARY GENE INTERACTION • If both gene loci have homozygous alleles and both of them produce identical phenotypes the F2 ratio become 9:7 instead 9:3:3:1 • In such case, the genotype aaBB,aaBb,Aabb, aabb produce one phenotype. • Both dominant alleles when present together each other are called complementary genes and produce a different phenotype.
  • 10. In sweet pea Presence of genes CC, cc ,PP‘and pp in homozygous condition produces no color (white) b, ecause expression of chromogen doesn'toccur in homozygous condition while expression of chromogen occurs when these two genes present in heterozygous condition
  • 11. INHIBITORY GENE ACTION • When dominant allele of one gene locus (B) in homozygous (BB) and heterozygous (Bb) condition produce the same phenotype the F2 ratio becomes 13:3 instead of 9:3:3:1 • While homozygous recessive (bb) condition produces different phenotype. • Homozygous recessive (bb) condition inhibits phenotypic expression of other genes so know as inhibitory gene action.
  • 12.
  • 13. DUPLICATE GENE INTERACTION • When dominant allele of both gene loci produce the same phenotype without cumulative effect. • In that case the ratio becomes 15:1 instead of 9:3:3:1. • Duplicate gene interaction occurs in shepherds purse plant.
  • 14. In shepherds purse plant seed capsule occurs in two shapes i.e triangular and ovoid shapes. Ovoid shapes seed capsule occurs when both genes are present in homozygous recessive condition
  • 15. MASKING GENE ACTION • When out of two genes, the dominant allele (e.g., A) of one gene masked the activity of allele of another gene (e.g., B) • Then A gene locus is said to be epistatic to the B gene locus • Dominant allele A express itself only in the presence of either B or b so such type of epistatic is know as dominant epistatic • The allele of hypostatic locus express only when the allele of epistatic locus present in homozygous recessive condition.
  • 16.
  • 17. POLYMERIC GENE ACTION •The completely dominant genes controlling a trait produce identical phenotypes when their dominant alleles are present with homozygous recessive condition of the other . •But when dominant alleles of both the genes are present together their phenotypic effect is enhanced as if the effect of two of genes were additive.
  • 18. •A cross between disc shape ( AABB ) and long shape ( aabb ) strains produced disc shape fruits in F1. • Inter mating of F1 plants with disc, spherical and long shape fruits in 9:6:1 ratio in F2.
  • 19. INTRODUCTION • A Gene is the basic physical and functional unit of heredity that controls a particular trait of an organism • An allele is a alternative form of a same gene located on same locus on the homologous chromosomes. • Alleles were first defined by Gregor Mendel in the Law of Seggregation. • During his study on genetics, Mendel also assumed only two alleles of one trait • Three or more alternative forms of the same gene are known as Multiple alleles. Their inheritence pattern is called Multiple allelism.
  • 20. MULTIPLE ALLELES • Alleles control the same characters and occupy the same locus. • Multiple alleles originate due to mutation. • All the alleles of the gene together constitute multiple allelic series. • In multiple allelic series, wild type allele is dominant over the other allele. • There is no crossing over. • Crossed alleles no attevation.
  • 21. EXAMPLES OF MULTIPLE ALLELES • HumanABO Blood group • Coat colour in Rabbits • Coat colour in mice • Self incomaptibility alleles in plants. • LOZENGE eye colour in Drosophila
  • 22. INHERITANCE OF HUMAN ABO BLOOD GROUP • Human ABO blood group system was discovered in 1900 by Karl Landsteiner. • InABO system human blood is grouped under 4 blood groups, A , B , AB and 0 . • The grouping is made on the basis of antigen (Antigen-A and Antigen-B) and antibody (Anti-A and Anti-B). Blood Group Antigen on RBC Antibodies in serum A A Anti-B B B Anti-A AB A and B Nil O Nil Anti-A and Anti-B
  • 23. GENOTYPES OF HUMAN ABO BLOOD GROUP • In 1925 Bernstein, discovered that theABO blood group system is detemined by a multiple allelic series of the gene I.  The gene I has three alleles, IA, IB, IO  The allele IA and IB are co-dominant.  The allele IA and IB are dominant over IO Alleles Genotype Phenotype IA, IB and IO ( IA = IB ) > IO IA IA A IB IA AB IA IO A IB IB B IB IO B IO IO O
  • 24.
  • 25. APPLICATIONS OFABO BLOOD GROUP • Blood transfusion. • Disputed parentage. • Identification of culprits. • In medicological cases. • In knowing susceptibility to disease  Group 0 - duodenal cancer  GroupA- Carcinoma of stomach, pancreas &salivary glands.
  • 26. INHERITANCE OF COAT COLOUR IN RABBITS • Coat colour of rabbit is under the control of a multiple allelic series .In rabbits there are five coat patterns:  Agouti  Chinchilla  Light grey  Himalayan  Albino • These coat patterns are controlled by the Gene “C” which has four allele which form a multiple allelic series .
  • 27.
  • 28. • Four alleles produce ten genotypes which determine five coat patterns. Alleles Genotypes Coat pattern C, cch , cc , c C C Agouti C cch Agouti C ch Agouti C c Agouti cch cch Chinchilla cch ch Light grey cch c Light grey ch ch Himalayan ch c Himalayan c c Albino
