Food from across the world is available to consumers today, regardless of the season, location, or environment. However, the greater options and accessibility are accompanied by increasing complexity in the food supply chain.
With growing data and lengthening ecosystems within the industry, the importance of trust weighs heavier than ever before.
From the farmer, processor, retailer, to the consumer, IBM Food Trustโข uses trust to build transparency. The block chain solution is working to ensure that transparency enables the expanding food system.
With capabilities to enable safer food, longer product shelf lives, reduced waste, faster traceability, and better access to shared information, IBM Food Trust empowers to meet the new standard for transparency and trust.
The solution provides authorized users with immediate access to actionable food supply chain data - from farm to store and ultimately the consumer. The complete history and current location of any food item along with its accompanying information (i.e. certifications, test data, temperature data) can be readily available in seconds.
IBM Food Trust provides organization with a set of integrated modules to address the increased complexity and build trust in the industry.

This Presentation gives a brief description regarding the IBM Food Trust Block-chain initiative along with its way of working, characteristics and benefits
I created this presentation for a client who wanted to understand how blockchain technology can be used in healthcare, particularly for eHR (electronic health record). They wanted a non-technical overview.
The conventional supply chain is plagued with various issues, most pressing among which is transparency or the lack of it thereof. Being a self-auditing distributed ledger that is accessible to all participants in the network and updated in real time, Blockchain brings in unprecedented levels of transparency to the supply chain. Moreover, its decentralized nature ensures that no single participant along the supply chain holds an unfair advantage or any influence on the data pertaining to the shipment.
Blockchain is constantly revolutionizing various industries, and supply chain is one of the major ones. Many companies are already using blockchain in supply chain to reap the benefits of blockchain technology. But why is it necessary to use blockchain for supply chain management?
At the moment, the supply chain industries deal with a lot of issues. Among them, rapid changes in the market, issues with compliance and quality, lack of transparency, increasing corruption, high costs, etc., are prominent problems. This is where blockchain steps in.
Using blockchain in supply chain management comes with its fair share of benefits - peer-to-peer transaction settlement, audit transparency, tracking products, and consumer feedbacks, accurate costing info, better shipping data, etc. In fact, there are already many blockchain supply chain projects live at the moment working perfectly.
We at 101 Blockchains are driven to help you educate on blockchain technology with high-quality courses and certifications. Therefore, we offer specific courses geared to supply chain management as well. At present, we have two prominent courses that can help you understand the concepts better - Enterprise Blockchains and Supply Chain Management Course and Enterprise Blockchains and Trade Finance Course.

A block in a blockchain refers to a collection of data. A blockchain is immutable as it is impossible to change data once it is added to the blockchain. The blocks are linked to form a chain and this is what makes a blockchain so trustworthy. It is this decentralized nature of blockchain, which makes doctors, patients, and healthcare providers to gain access to the same information quickly and safely.

The increasing of demand for cloud computing services also increases the number of providers and solutions. This situation brings several challenges, such as difficulties in finding the best service, the increase of migration complexity and the challenge of resources management. To help companies in this movement, the startup called One Cloud was created in order to facilitate all the life cycle of cloud computing services, from search and compare providers, to acquisition and management of environments. Through a "one stop shop" web platform, the customer is able to compare prices and features, and also acquire cloud infrastructure services from the main providers. All this in a single portal, simple, centralized and secure.

Identity Based Lifecycle Management for a Trusted IoT Supply Chaintomkat58
ย
Can we trust IoT devices containing components from multiple vendors in the supply chain? Attacks like Mirai botnet traced to Xionmai cameras and the Big Hack traced to the spy chip on Supermicro boards revealed that the roots of many security problems lie in the structure of the electronics supply chain. Component suppliers are paid to deliver hardware for a set price often use subcontractors which may compromise security and trust. System integrators bear the burden for delivering trusted IoT devices, but only a few have the infrastructure to trace, onboard and provision such devices on a mass basis, or to gather the analytics needed to uncover quality and security issues. What is needed in the IoT value chain is a trusted chip-to-device identity infrastructure linked to IoT cloud platforms which can provide economic incentives to deliver trusted hardware services throughout the life of IoT devices. And this identity-based lifecycle management from chip to cloud can enable a trusted IoT supply chain.

Editor's Notes
This is the โBEFOREโ picture representing the โstatus quoโ for business networks.
Each participant keeps their own ledger(s) which are updated to represent business transactions as they occur.
This is EXPENSIVE due to duplication of effort and intermediaries adding margin for services.
It is clearly INEFFICIENT, as the business conditions โ the contract โ is duplicated by every network participant
It is also VULNERABLE because if a central system (e.g. Bank) is compromised due to an incidents this affects the whole business network. Incidents can include fraud, cyber attack or a simple mistake.
The novel Blockchain architecture give participants the ability to share a ledger which is updated every time a transaction occurs through peer to peer replication.
Cryptography is used to ensure that network participants see only the parts of the ledger that are relevant to them, and that transactions are secure, authenticated and verifiable.
Blockchain also allows the contract for asset transfer to be embedded in the transaction database determining the conditions under which the transaction can occur.
Network participants agree how transactions are verified through consensus or similar mechanisms. Government oversight, compliance & audit can be part of the same network.
Participants SAME AS BEFORE โ this is not a disintermediation play
CONSENSUSโ means all participants agree that a transaction is valid
PROVENANCEโ means participants know where the asset came from and how itโs ownership has changed over time
IMMUTABILITYโ means no participant can tamper with a transaction once itโs agreed. If a transaction was in error then a NEW transaction must be used to reverse the error, with both visible
FINALITYโ means that there is ONE place to determine the ownership of an asset or completion of a transaction. This is the role of the SHARED LEDGER.
From the ground up, we built the solution on top of Hyperledger Fabric, which is an open source framework, to support the collaborative development of blockchain-based ledgers. The IBM Blockchain Platform is an enterprise ready blockchain application development solution, from which IBM Food Trust was built.
IBM Food Trust is modular and, in addition to data entry and access, there are two other modules that help to improve food supply chain transparency and efficiency: trace & recall and certificate management. Trace & Recall provides access to end to end food traceability data. Certificate Management gives users the ability to upload, manage, access, and edit compliance documentation over a trusted network. ย
We also plan to build new modules for additional functionality / capability. ย But we cannot do it all; what is also important is facilitating an ecosystem model, where anyone can contribute value and extract value. ย We are working with 3rd party data providers, like food testing companies, hardware device and scanner manufacturers, cold chain operators, and certification bodies and scheme owners to connect the solution to additional source data, to further increase value for participants
