ABSTRACT
Programming tools are useful to make
planning or projects because they provide
some labors which must realize to meet with
the execution of them. Among these tools, is
the Gantt chart, created to make easier the
planning and carry out of the jobs throughout
the execution stage of a project, thus allowing
facility in the labor relations, each timeline and
their respective lengths.
Below, to cover the theme there’ll be
presented points such as the presentation of the
Gantt Chart, the elements it contains, its
characteristics, the step by step to make it and
the importance in management issues.

1. INTRODUCTION
The webpage of CCM shows us that Gantt
chart is a programming tool created by Henry
Lawrence Gantt in 1917 and it’s used to
organize the labors to do in a company or
project, where activities and time are
connected by axes, and it allow to know the
respective time used by every task, to program
the time that will be used to realize the
execution of the complete project and to know
which activities are depending of others.
2. ELEMENTS
CCM let us know too that Gantt chart is based
in two axes, the horizontal axis which contains
the time of the year when will be executed the
project that is defined on days, weeks, months
or years; and the vertical axis where are the
activities that will be realized on the
determinate time. There are also some
conventional symbols used in Gantt chart
which help to understand the activities to
avoid writing and save space.
3. CHARACTERISTICS
María Alejandra Hinojosa give some
characteristics of the Gantt Chart such as:
• Gantt chart is consisted by rectangular
blocks that means the duration of the
activities.
• The begin of the block represents the begin
of the activity, and the final of the block,
the timeline for the activity.
• Blocks can be refill with a different color
to have the information of the advance of
the tasks.
4. CHART PREPARING
To make a Gantt chart, Alejandra also says is
useful to use the following steps:
• Draw the axes.
• Define the tasks and activities in the
vertical axis.
• Define the units to use in the horizontal
axis and write them until the timeline to
finish the execution.
• Draw the initial tasks blocks, the ones that
don’t have any predecessor activity. The
left side of the block must coincide with the
first date.
• Add the dependent activities blocks, first,
the ones that depend of the tasks already
put, lastly, just repeat with the ones that
depend of the recently put and
successively.

5. ¿WHY IS IT USEFUL IN
MANAGEMENT ISSUES?
Students of the “Universidad de la Sierra”
show in a video the importance of the Gantt
Chart for the projects management and say
that Gantt Chart is important in Management
issues because this tool helps to organize the
company’s activities and to make them in a
certain time, with this implement they will can
keep an eye in the development of the
activities, assign responsibilities, and schedule
them, in different time units, it depends if the
project will be large or not.
This baseline shows to the manager track
project progress and forecast project results,
thanks to baselines the manager can know
when the project gets wrong in something, and
without it, they would never be able to know
it. They help to realize problematic points and
minimize them. And for that reason, it is so
important when they are doing the activities, it
helps to keep an adequate record about the
project schedule and its development.
