GANTT CHART
Gantt chart
 This chart was formulated for providing graphic
schedule for planning and controlling of the work,
and recoding progress towards stage of a project.
 A GANTT chart is a type of bar chart that illustrates
a project schedule.
 It was introduced by Henry Gantt.
Gantt chart
 GANTT charts have become a common
technique for representing the phases and
activities of a project work breakdown
structure.
Constructing Gantt chart
List your activities
 Make a list of everything that you plan to do in the
project.
 Take your methodology and turn it into a step-by-step
plan.
 Breakdown your project in to number of activities.
For ex: Define Research question, Literature review, Revisit
Research question, Make research design, sample design,
collection of data, Data Analysis and Interpret solution etc.
Constructing Gantt chart
Estimate the time required
 For each item on your list, estimate how long it will
take you to do that thing.
For ex:
Defining Research Question: 1 week
Literature review : 2 weeks
Data Collection : 2 weeks
Data Analysis : 1 days
Report writing : 3 days
Constructing Gantt chart
Put activities in order
 What is the first thing that you are going to
do? What will you do next? What will you do
after that?
 Make a note of any dependencies (i.e.,
situations where you can’t do one thing until
another is started or finished)
Constructing Gantt chart
Draw a Gantt chart
 Give start date and end date for each activity
depends on duration of activity and
dependency of that activity.
 Draw it as like graph format (x axis = date and
y axis = Activity)
Advantages and Disadvantages of
Gantt Chart
Advantages
 Simple
 Good visual communication to others
 Task durations can be compared easily
 Good for scheduling resources
Disadvantages
 Dependencies are more difficult to visualize.
 Minor changes in data can cause major changes in
the chart.
