Galileo Galilei was an Italian scientist, mathematician, astronomer and philosopher born in 1564 in Pisa, Italy. He made several important scientific discoveries including the pendulum, a scale to weigh bodies, the water thermometer, and the telescope. Galileo also developed the heliocentric theory that the Sun is the center of the universe, which went against the teachings of the Catholic Church at the time. As a result, Galileo was tried by the Inquisition and prohibited from publishing his theories until 2000 when the Church finally accepted his heliocentric view of the solar system.
