Galileo Galilei was an Italian physicist, mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher born in 1564 who played a major role in the Scientific Revolution. Some of his achievements include improvements to the telescope that allowed him to make astronomical observations like discovering Jupiter's moons and sunspots. He also supported Copernicanism, which placed the Sun at the center of the universe, which was controversial at the time. After 1610, when he began publicly supporting the heliocentric view, he met opposition from some philosophers and clerics and was eventually tried by the Inquisition for defending his views, found guilty of heresy, and spent the rest of his life under house arrest.
