Galileo Galilei was an Italian astronomer, physicist, engineer, philosopher, and mathematician born in 1564 in Pisa, Italy. He played a major role in the scientific revolution and made several important discoveries including that projectiles follow a parabolic path and that the phases of Venus confirm Copernicus' model of a heliocentric solar system. He used his telescope to make astronomical observations that supported the Copernican view of the solar system. Galileo faced opposition from the Catholic Church for his scientific views and was found "vehemently suspect of heresy" for holding the Copernican view of the solar system.
