Galileo Galilei was born in Pisa, Italy in 1564 and showed an early interest in mathematics despite his father wanting him to study medicine. He began teaching mathematics privately after leaving university without a degree. Using a telescope he invented, Galileo made several astronomical observations that supported the Copernican model of a sun-centered solar system, contradicting the Church's geocentric view. This led the Inquisition to sentence him to house arrest in 1633 for his scientific writings and defense of heliocentrism.
