Physics Of Bowling

Physics
30 May 2015
The Physics of Bowling Bowling is a fun filled pastime with a lot more to it than what meets the eye.
Some of the concepts involved are energy, momentum, forces, velocity, acceleration, and center of
mass. The ultimate goal of a bowler is to knock down as many pins as he can. To successfully do this,
a bowler needs to first consider the trajectory in which his ball travels down the lane. Energy is a
system s ability to do work. (Elert) The unit for energy is joules. Some other characteristics of energy
are that it takes numerous forms and that it is a scalar quantity.(Elert) The two types of energy are
kinetic energy and potential energy. Kinetic energy refers to an object s motion. This differs ... Show

The greater angle optimizes the number of pins that the ball will knock down. The way that the bowler
controls this is in the manner in which he grasps the ball. It is dependent on the position that the
bowler places his fingers and thumb. Rotational velocity is the main feature. The importance of
rotational velocity is from the precession it provides the ball with. Precession is the change in
direction of the bowling balls spin vector... over time (Physics Of Bowling.) Increasing precession
leads to the domino effect. That is increasing amount of friction on the ball, so the hook that the ball
strikes the pins is also greater. By default there is a greater angle for the bowling

Airlines introduced railway style, uniformed stewards and restaurant style tables adorned with vases
of flowers and silver cutlery. In 1928, Pan Am became the first US airline to employ cabin attendants
to serve meals. Also in 1928, Western Airlines (eventually absorbed in Delta Airlines) served meals
brought to their aeroplanes, by Cadillac, from a restaurant near Los Angeles Airport. In 1929, Pan Am
introduced in flight movies on its flights between Miami and Havana (Dana, 1999). In 1930, United
Air Lines introduced the world s first stewardess. Ellen Church was the first woman to serve a meal on
an aeroplane. Pan Am preferred to employ stewards who had served as professional waiters or pursers
on ships. In 1934, Pan Am inaugurated the S 42 on its route from Miami to Buenos Aires. The airline
set a precedent by installing facilities for heating food in flight on long over water journeys. Stewards
would take orders from passengers and radio ahead for meals, which were served to passengers in a
special dining area of the aeroplane (Dana, 1999). Dinner in flight became a formal affair, often in
tuxedos and evening gowns. Passengers enjoyed a feast, cooked aboard the aeroplane, and served on
linen covered tables in a fine dining salon set with china, crystal and fresh flowers. During the 1940s
and 1950s, passengers on the Boeing 377 Stratocruiser could get staterooms with private washstands,

Women In The Laboratory
Explore the presentation of female voices in Shakespeare s Macbeth, Duffy s Medusa and Havisham
and Robert Browning s poem (The Laboratory)
Throughout history women have been expected to obey and serve men , especially their husbands.
These ideas have been developed in society because of the powerful influence of religious doctrine.
As a consequence, females have been subject to very narrow gender definitions. However, as
presented in poems Havisham, Medusa and The Laboratory and the play Macbeth, certain women
wish not to adhere to these idealised views. In fact, all the women in these texts display some anti
female traits. In this essay, I wish to explore how Shakespeare, Duffy and Browning all give these
women a voice to fight back at ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Quotes like hissed and spat on my scalp expose the snake like thoughts Medusa holds. The use of
sibilance also adds aggression to what s said by Medusa as saying the words make you spit. To add,
the description of Medusa s mouth being Yellow fanged and foul shows us how unclean medusa is and
the how her teeth are Fanged implement animalistic characteristics and aggression into Medusa herself
as words like fanged and foul are usually associated with animals specifically lions and snakes
meaning that she can cause a lot of harm with her mouth. The idea of foul ness comes from the
witches during act 1 scene 1 when they say fair is foul, and foul is fair. The idea of something bad
being good creates the idea that doing the wrong thing is the right thing. So by the female protagonist
being anti feminine can be seen as doing the right thing, and that they re making a stand for women
everywhere. Which is echoed by Lady Macbeth, as in Act 1 Scene 5 it is deemed that she can also use
her mouth as a weapon, this is scene in the quote chastise with the valour of my tongue . The fact that
she uses her tongue as a weapon completely contrasts with her husband as during the opening scenes
of the play we see that Macbeth s weapon is his brandished steel this shows us how Lady Macbeth

The City Of Pompeii And Pompeii
In ancient Pompeii, there were many important establishments in the Forum. It was seen as the primal
hub of the town, and due to the busy trading nature, a commercial centre for exchanging foreign goods
was a necessity. However in Herculaneum, being a quiet fishing village, the structure of the Forum
would have been very different to that of Pompeii. Most of the Italian municipalities in their time had
a Forum, a square in their town where the political, commercial, and social lives are all intertwined.
Not only did it act as a social meeting place for the residents, but it also functioned as the primary
religious and economic sector of the city. In Pompeii the Forum was a large area measuring at around
157 by 38 metres, not including all the surrounding buildings (Unfortunately in Herculaneum, the
forum is still uncovered). The Forum was lined with the most important buildings in the city. (See
figure 1) In Pompeii particularly, the forum held the Municipal offices (A), Basilica (B), Temple of
Apollo (C), Forum Olitorium (vegetable market) (C), Latrines (public toilets) (D), Temple of Jupiter
(E), Macellum (marketplace) (F), Temple of the Lares (G), Temple of Vespasian (I), Building of
Eumanchia (J), and a Comitium (voting house) (K). On the western side of the forum, there is a
pedestal, built for outspoken orators. This served as a location where people could express their views
on current situations, usually political. A typical day in the Pompeian forum consisted of

This coupled with enormous outside advertising meant that consumers could not escape the product

White Elephants Are Like An Abortion
White Elephants are like an Abortion
As we know conceiving a child is a life changing experience; indeed, it can sometimes be a good or a
bad experience. In the story Hills like White Elephants, Hemingway s unnamed American male
dominates the weaker sexed Jig Rankin. Throughout the story the American man is trying to convince
the pregnant Jig to abort their baby. They are discussing a life and death situation, literally for the
unborn child, and figuratively for their relationship. There are many themes that help make the story
very intriguing. A few of the themes in the short story are courage, domination, addiction, and
communication.
The courage in the story comes from our character Jig. It seems that she is brave enough to go through
with the pregnancy while the American man is too selfish and afraid, saying things like But I don t
want anybody but you. I don t want anyone else. (478) He cannot face up to the change and challenge
that life brings them. The man is very persistent in opposing of Jig s maternity, he even contradicts
himself, calling the abortion first an awfully simple operation, and then not really an operation at all
(476). Here and elsewhere, there are many modifiers like really and awfully that indicate that the man
is not willing to take on this baby. We perceive other attributes directly from Jig though. As she
demonstrates a hesitant demeanor to abort the baby, she also shows her knowledge of the man s self
centered and insecure

My Father Is A Positive Father
When I was five years old my parents got a divorce. My father was abusive towards me on many
occasions and was known to cheat on my mom. I remember him getting mad at me one time, he
proceeded to kick me multiple times with cowboy boots on. It was so bad I could not sit down for a
week. He would not play a significant role in my life going forward. ...children with abusive fathers
may disengage from their fathers, preferring to distance and buffer themselves from the harmful
effects of negative paternal involvement (Dick,2005). Not having a positive father figure present in
my life, has negatively affected my life in countless ways. It was around middle childhood (Industry
vs Inferiority stage), that repercussions begin to become present. I can remember not knowing how to
walk confidently. This may sound ridiculous to many, but I did not know how to walk like a man.
When my father had exited my life as a child, it did not imprint on me how to walk. I was unable to
identify how to walk like a man. I grew up in a household of women and I can remember specifically,
not trying to walk like them. There was an insecurity in the way I did walk, and I can remember on
many occasions of that being brought to my attention. I remember being envious of my friends whose
parents were still together. Contradictory of today, majority of married couples with children stayed
together back then (McLanahan, 1995). It had become so foreign to me, what a father was even like.

The Result of the 1st Round
In the early stages of sales, videogame consoles typically sell at a loss. As sales and production
volumes grow, console makers expect to get economies of scale that will allow them to lower costs
and reduce their losses. But economies of scale were slow coming to Microsoft: Miscalculations about
the cost of the original Xbox s hard drive and main microprocessor have led to some $4 billion in
operating losses since 2001, analysts estimate this over the management estimate mentioned before
($2 billion)
While Microsoft grappled with its growing losses, rival Sony extended its already strong lead. As
previous gaming heavyweights like Nintendo and Sega lost ground, Sony was able to grab a 70%
share of the videogame console market. Microsoft still holds a smaller than 20% share, according to
analysts..
Not giving up yet, Microsoft promptly prepares the 2nd Xbox, and announces that they are in the stage
of development for the new XBOX.

to fund and facilitate terrorist activities. These crimes include extortion, kidnaping, robbery,
corruption, alien smuggling, document fraud, arms trafficking, cyber crime, white collar crime,
smuggling of contraband, money laundering and certainly drug trafficking.

Terrorism, according to the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, is the unlawful
use or threatened use of force or violence by a person or an organized group against people or property
with the intention of intimidating or coercing societies or governments, often for ideological or
political reasons (Follendore). Terrorism was more myth than reality for most Americans until the
attack of 9/11. The act of terrorism is meant to subdue societies with fear but it is impossible to instill
fear without tools. Without capital, terrorists are unable to act; even terrorists are reliant upon money.
Since their country of origin dislikes most terrorist groups, it is hard to set up businesses and become
successful independently so an outside income source is required. Drugs and drug trafficking are huge
moneymakers that are also tax free. The drug trade is cash based and full of money. James Bovard
says in an essay that because narcotics are illicit, they tend to attract violent, ruthless people and
organizations to carry out their production and marketing. Further he says, groups that specialize in
violence such as terrorists take to drug trafficking like a duck to water (Bovard). Drugs are present and
fairly common within the United States and if drug sales are reduced, terrorism will diminish over

Throughout the past semester, I ve gained a lot of experience when it comes to teaching. I ve learned
more than I ever knew before and am gaining more experience in the actual field instead of
babysitting at after school programs. That being said, while watching not only my mentee but the
other mentees at Kids Count I ve come to realize the two biggest things they struggled at is reading
and mathematics. Most students there struggle reading in general but they also struggle in
pronouncing words. I sought to find an article that helped break down phonemes and I found the
Blending Wheel article. What drew me to this specific article was the fact that this was a specific
activity (a pretty cool one in fact), instead of instruction help. For the other article, most students there
also struggle with the basics of mathematics, so I wanted to find an article that helped students learn
mathematics in a fun way. I liked the shared story article because it brought together something that
most people don t think of: reading and mathematics. It s great for us to realize as instructors that
everything is related and can be used in conjunction with another. The first article, Blending Wheels:
Tools for Decoding Practice, focuses on a tool, the blending wheel, which will help struggling readers
of all ages practice blending sounds. A blending wheel consists of three concentric circles with a brass
fastener. Each circle has letters on it that when spun, are combined to form words. The

A New Drug For Weight Management
BIOL 376
Samuel McCaffrey

(Word Count=1650)
Liraglutide is a new drug for weight management presently in clinical trial. Explain the proposed
mechanism of the drug and briefly report the outcome of the clinical trials.
Introduction
Liraglutide is a glucagon like peptide 1 receptor agonist (GLP 1), which is synonymous with the
naturally occurring human peptide GLP 1 produced in the colon and solitary tract of the brain (Baggio
and Drucker, 2007). The drug was developed recently for weight management and the treatment of
diabetes mellitus type 2 (DM2) and has clinically been shown to promote weight loss. As rates of
obesity and DM2 increase for both adults and children in Australia halting and reversing this
increasing trend has become a national and worldwide health priority (Australia s health 2012, 2012).
This essay will illustrate how the drug Liraglutide can aid in reversing this trend and promote weight
loss.
Background
The drug Liraglutide is seen on the market as two different medications, Victoza and Saxenda.
Initially the drug was approved only for treatment of DM2 back in 2009, but recently was approved
for treatment of obesity as well. The common but different forms differ slightly in their composition
and so are used for different purposes, Victoza for diabetes and Saxenda for weight loss. The drug is
recommend to be used as an adjunct to diet and exercise in the treatment of individuals with a BMI
higher than 27 and for those with DM2 to achieve

IHSA Interview Essay
Two days before the IHSA State Competition (which involves taking 35 people on a bus for 72 hours
three hours south and competing in the Peoria Civic Center), a posting crept into my email for an
Instructional Coach, a position that the district was not planning to create. This position, which did not
have a job description attached, stated that a teacher at each building would become a TOSA (Teacher
On Special Assignment) the following year to fulfill this role. I had two days to apply and would
interview if selected, the next Tuesday. Good luck! Without a concrete description, I was hesitant to
apply. Like my students, I like boundaries and guidelines (maybe even some sort of rubric). This role,
whatever it turned out to be, would certainly push me outside of my comfort zone, encourage me to

Machiavelli s Republic
State Structure
Simply put, for democracy to exist the state must be accordingly structured with principles of
democracy. The key distinction between democracies and republics is within the limits placed on the
state by the law, especially with concern for minority rights. Both systems generally use
representational voting that often takes place in legislatures/parliaments. In a republic, a constitution
will guarantee protection for individual rights that cannot be restrained by the government. By
contrast, in a pure democracy the majority cannot be restrained in this manner and may, in fact, force
its ideals on the minority. The most successful and ideal type representational republic is that of the
Romans, which Machiavelli holds to a high ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These policies can be useful for future republics by also reducing them to their origins. Without
constant renovation, they would not be able to last. Reverting to original principles is only possible
through either external events or according to their own intrinsic good sense (III I). Thus for
Machiavelli, comparing a states modern affairs with that of its ancient is the best means by which to
draw political knowledge from them. True political liberty could only come from a rehabilitation of
states standards. Because a republic is intended to preserve liberty and use it to promote general
wellbeing, it is critical to regain freedom as soon as possible. Desperate times such as war, natural
disasters, etc. always lead to a degree of degeneration, and so it is critical to adjust the government and
its policies in order to regain what has been lost (I I, II). Ultimately, the structure of the Roman
republic and Machiavelli s favorability of it is what distinguishes his true republican nature. As he
advocates for a distribution of power rather than for it to be wholly vested in the people, it can be
discerned that modeling a state after a Republic is the superior means by which to

deterioration from 1977 to 1985. The charts and graphs included at the back of the case study gave a
graphic representation of the relatively low market share Coors held in 1977 and how this decreased in
coming years compared to companies such as Anheuser Busch, Miller, Stoh, and Heileman. Market
share is an important value driver when increasing a firm s performance based on a comprehensive
value metrics framework, and with Coors industry market share being low this provides a problem.

The Super Natural Analysis
Last week we read Jeffrey Kripal s The Super Natural, in the text he mentions, We are not our physical
body; we are spirits, and as such we are immortal and we are destined, lifetime by lifetime...to evolve
into ever higher levels of consciousness and so return to God . Through investigations of various
worldviews and the real , I am discovering evidence and support for that which I feel and know to be
true and real for myself. Particularly throughout that last few months I have grown more aware about
the colonization of knowledge, not just in context to religion and power, but the overall
institutionalized control of power/knowledge dynamics in place such as language, culture, and
education. The quote above provided by Kirpal assists in backing where my worldview lies, and the
ever expanding and dynamic composition of my minds eye. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The Labyrinths In The Borgesian World
Labyrinths in the Borgesian World. A labyrinth can be defined as a structure consisting of a number of
intercommunicating passages arranged in bewildering complexity, through which it is difficult or
impossible to find one s way without guidance . The life of Jorge Luis Borges was one filled with
labyrinths. At an early age, Borges was haunted by these mysterious things that filled his childhood,
with his first encounters coming from his father s massive library. He once said in an interview that he
found an engraving of the seven wonders of the world, one of which that portrayed a circular labyrinth
; this frightened him dearly. From his childhood to his writings, these inhumane feats filled his life
with nightmares. He questioned their existence and wondered what the truth was behind them. Have

Witchcraft
Witchcraft Satan Woship, or Just another Religion?
In today s society, new religions are popping up all over the place. One of the oldest, yet fastest
growing faiths today is witchcraft. This earth based, nature oriented belief has been established since
the thirteenth century, but it is not until recently that it has began to spread across the world.
Everywhere we look we see something associated with the practice of wicca. The movie, Blair Witch
Project, is one example of the growing belief in spells, charms, and covens. However, there are many
people who disapprove of this practice and are labeling it as a false religion. ; Christians, for example,

Basically, it was people who were lonely or were considered to be outcasts. There were also Indian
slaves and anti Christians who were accused of witch craft because of their different point of views.
However, sometimes, everyday people were accused because of their superstitions like knocking on
wood. ; The church saw them as those who didn t put their complete faith in God, and so therefore,
were considered to be witches.
There are many different types of witchcraft, or wicca. Sometimes, it is simply just charms and spells
that people chant. These spells can be considered either good or bad, depending on the purpose of the
hex. The magic used in witchcraft can also vary. It basically comes down to either black magic, which
is meant to do harm, or white magic, which is only meant to heal and help.
In the Bible it is clearly stated that witchcraft is wrong. There are many different chapters and verses
in the Bible that reveal this. Obviously, God does not want his people to be hand in hand with sin, but
the question still remains: Is witch craft tied to Satanism and evil? Many say yes, but many say no as
well. By viewing the facts about witchcraft, one can decide for themselves.
The exact time when witchcraft originated is unknown, but experts say it all began to become noticed
as an evil practice around the 13th century. During this time, the church slightly tolerated the practice
of magic, but as the 14th century moved

Madeleine Vionnet Research Paper
Madeleine Vionnet was born in France in 1876 and was apprenticed to a dressmaker while she was a
child (Arnold, 2015). At the age of eleven, Mme. Madeline realized the gift of her hands and became a
seamstress. In the early 1900s, she began her career in a couture house in Paris, Callot Soeurs (Arnold,
2015). There she worked for six years and skilled herself in draping fabrics directly on live models.
She was so dedicated to her passion that she worked twelve hours a day and often during lunch hours.
This dedication earned her the title of architect among other dressmakers.
Later, she worked with Jacques Doucet from 1907 to 1912 (Arnold, 2015). Mr. Doucet was a fashion
designer and art collector. Here, Vionnet s first collection was considered a revolution in the house and
for its time. Unfortunately, an ageing Doucet could not keep up with the taste of women after World
War I. Vionnet never learned sketching, but developed skills in dressmaking in haute couture before
opening her own establishment in 1912 (Kirke, 1998).
During 1920, the war had passed and people were ready to push aside the old trends. When the

For most of my life, the word Native American had immediately made me think of feathers,

a movie that depicts the modern Native American culture, I learned many other things. For one, I
learned that many of the customs that modern Native Americans have are very similar to my own. I
also saw that the family life of the Native Americans in the film had many of the same problems that
my family had undergone in the past years. This film was unlike any that I have ever seen; therefore, it

The urinary tract naturally flushes away bacteria that are present in the urethra. However, an
abundance of bacteria present can overcome the flushing power of the urinary tract and begin to grow.
There are species of non pathogenic bacteria that inhabit the urinary tract and result in no symptoms
for the individual. A problem arises when pathogenic bacteria enter the urinary tract and are not
flushed away, this results in a urinary tract infection (UTI) (Foxman and Schaeffer, 2011).
Two urine samples were tested in lab, one from a patient known to have a urinary tract infection and
the other was of the researcher s urine. These samples were plated on a MacConkey s agar plate
(which only allows for the growth of Gram negative bacteria) and on TSA plates (which allow the
growth of both Gram positive and Gram negative bacterium). Colony counts for each plate were
recorded and the number of colony forming units per millilitre (CFU/mL) was calculated by
multiplying the number of colonies by the dilution factor. A value greater than or equal to 105
CFU/mL is indicative of a urinary tract infection (d Entremont and Maynard, 2014). The bacterial
colonies isolated during the experiment were also exposed to the Cytochrome Oxidase test. This test
reveals whether or not the bacteria produce the enzyme Cytochrome Oxidase, this enzyme is
important in the electron transport chains of aerobic bacteria. The isolated bacterial colonies were run

Themes In A Long Way Gone
These days I live in three worlds: my dreams, and the experiences of my new life, which trigger
memories from the past (Beah, 20). Ishmael Beah writes about his journey through Sierra Leone, in
his book, A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier. He describes how he escapes the Civil War of
the 1990 s. The quotation is a simple way of describing Beah s journey, such that during his time
running from the war, he feels as if he is living in different places. In the novel, Beah uses symbols to
underscore his central theme of oppression and freedom. The central theme will be proved by
analyzing Beah s cassette tapes, guns and his journey to New York City.
One of the most important things during Ishmael s journey to freedom is not only to get away from the
war going on in Sierra Leone, but the cassette tapes he values so deeply. Early on in the novel,
Ishmael and his friends are going from village to village to get away from the rebels. Upon arriving at
a village, Ishmael and his friends got taken by these men protecting the village. The boys had their
pockets emptied to make sure they had no weapons. Ishmael says that [t]he guards walked into the
circle and started searching our pockets. One of them found a rap cassette in my pocket and handed it

Persuasive Essay On Overpopulation
There are many issues today that pose a threat to our way of life. Overpopulation is a serious problem
that will eventually have an extremely negative effect on our countries, and our planet. The problems
that arise due to overpopulation could even prove to a fatal epidemic that will eventually wipeout the
entire human race. Oftentimes this issue is overlooked due to lack of knowledge and understanding of
the subject; or, simply because most of us are so blessed that we are not affected first hand by the
problems it is causing this very second. Overpopulation, in my belief, is an enormously serious global
issue that should be identified, analyzed, and controlled immediately. The term overpopulation
literally means that the number of things (in this case: humans) that depend on resources for survival
is significantly larger than the amount of resources available to them. Today our planet is experiencing
the effects of multiplying citizens because of the obstacles the environment is being forced to take on.
Many believe that Earth is presently occupied by too many people. Year after year the population
multiplies faster and faster. Presently, there are about 7 billion people occupying this planet, and by
the middle of the approaching century the U.N. predicts that the count will reach 9.4 billion. Both
developed and developing countries are at risk of the dangerous problems that overpopulation can and
will create. This relates to In defense of the Everglade Pythons By

Differences Between Hinduism And Hinduism
Religion is the belief and worship of whatever higher power you choose to server, especially a
personal God or gods. In Judaism, its laws are gotten from the torah and initial five books of
scriptures; they put trust and beliefs in one God whom every one of us are displayed in our own
image. Christianity is like Judaism with one God, however utilizes the entire book of scriptures as a
guide, there are several of contrasts including laws which are available in Judaism and place of love.
Islamic followers or believers then again believe in Allah as their greatest being and the Quran as their
book of confidence or faith. Islamic practices or beliefs are stricter from what they eat, to what they
wear, how many times of day the pray along with other rules. Each one of these religions have their
days of worship and devotions for examples Christianity worship on Sundays, Judaism on Saturdays
and Muslim/Islamic on Fridays. In Buddhism religion, those who believe in it have confidence in
Buddha who was a prophet also compositions in their sacred book. They Believe in reincarnation
(rebirth), suffering, Karma and liberate oneself or way of finding reality. In Hinduism they don t have
a historical founder. Its origins reach back to primitive antiquity. Hindus believe in many Gods, the

The Characteristics Of Language InThe Shining, And William...
Introduction:
Authors in the horror genre often use various writing techniques in order to create the horror
characteristics they wish to include throughout their novels, and therefore I will analyse the techniques
used by Stephen King and William Blatty in two of their most famous novels. The purpose of this
comparative analysis is to discover what language and stylistic features Stephen King in The Shining
and William Blatty in The Exorcist use to create characteristics of the horror genre. I will discover
how both authors use important writing techniques such as foreshadowing, mystery, surprise, fear and
suspense, in order to create a horror theme throughout their novels, and I will compare the similarities
and differences in their writing techniques. In the end I am hoping to come to a conclusion where I
thoroughly understand how both Stephen King and William Blatty both used language and stylistic
features to create the theme of horror in both, The Shining and The Exorcist .
Foreshadowing:
Foreshadowing is used to create an image in the readers head before the event actually occurs so that
the reader can predict what is going to happen. In The Shining by Stephen King, there is constant
foreshadowing. Since the beginning of the book, hints are given to the reader as to what will happen
later on in the novel. A lot of this foreshadowing is shown to the reader in the form of Danny s ability,
the shining . Through his gift, he can often see hints of what will happen in the future. For example, he
has constantly encountered the word REDRUM . At first, he has no clue what it means, but then, once
he is already in the hotel, he figures it out. And then, eyes widening in horror, he saw the word
REDRUM reflecting dimly from the glass dome, now reflected twice. And he saw that it spelled
MURDER. Danny Torrance screamed in wretched terror (343). It s at this moment that the reader also
realises the significance of the word REDRUM , as it becomes clear that the word is actually murder.
It s at this moment that all the foreshadowing leads to a definite meaning. Foreshadowing is very
prominent throughout The Shining . In The Exorcist however there are many moments that

Experiment 1
Experiment 1 is a partial conceptual replication of Collins and Quillian s (1969) study on the hierarchy
network model for the organization of semantic memory. The purpose of experiment 1 was to test
Collins and Quillian s hypothesis stating that response time for category searching should be slower as
a function of an increasing number of levels separating a category subject and it s predicate term on
the semantic hierarchy model. We use the same basic procedure as Collins and Quillian s experiment,
except that we utilize a single category for predicate terms as opposed to multiple categories at level 2
of the semantic hierarchy model.
Method
Participants and Apparatus. 23 NYU students, taking lab in human cognition, received course credit
for their participation in the experiment. The experiment was administered on standard PC s or
Macintosh computers over a single class period.
Design and Stimuli. The experiment was run using a within subject design, and consisted of one
independent variable. The independent variable is the number of levels in the hierarchy separating the
subject and predicate terms. There are three levels of the independent variable 0 levels of separation, 1
level of separation, and 2 levels of separation. The type of sentence stimulus presented to subjects,
whether it was defined by a property or a superset , was an additional factor taken into account when
analyzing the data. Stimuli consisted of 144 TRUE and FALSE sentences

Egoism And Ethical Egoism
Egoism is the idea of self interest. It elicits what controls, and give the ambitions our self interest.
When philosophers carefully observed egoism. Their thesis of egoism voiced that our intuition
controls what we do and there is two form of self interest. We have descriptive which they think
temporarily that people s drives instantaneous aspiration. The normative way is where our self interest
is developed based on experience and power. Theories of egoism also study the intentions behind our
actions. For example, do we act for love, religion, or wealth? Who benefits from our actions, is it the
individual or the whole of society? Two theories exist that try to answer these questions, namely the
theories of Ethical Egoism and Psychological Egoism.
Ethical Egoism is the normative theory that our self concept should not be viewed as solitary but
instead as part of society. In this respect, our actions should also be for the benefit of society. Ethical
Egoism isn t about self deprivation, but rather about helping yourself by helping others as well. It
relies not just on improving one s self but also on improving the structure of society. The strong
version of Ethical Egoism states that everything we do for our own good is moral and must always be
promoted. The weak version states that although acting for one s own good is usually for the good of
society on the whole, there may be conditions in which personal desires have to be suppressed in order
to maintain social morality. The weak version integrates the individual into society in such a way that
he or she must be willing to make sacrifices for the benefit of others.
In contradiction to Ethical Egoism, Psychological Egoism presents itself as a much different
perspective altogether. Psychological Egoism is the descriptive variant that states all human actions to
be the result of selfishness. The core of this theory focuses on a different definition of self concept or
ego. However, there are many identifiable fallacies of Psychological Egoism. Firstly, the theory is
based on intangible terminologies of the inner self that cannot be physically examined. Furthermore,
when we do try to study Psychological Egoism in terms of scientific observations such as human

Sexism In Peter Pan
Three plays, five movies, and two television shows. The story of Peter Pan has lived on for over one
hundred years, dating back to the original play in 1906. Filled with mythical fairies, mermaids, and
pirates, J.M. Barrie s Peter Pan is a beloved story centering around the adventures of Peter Pan, and
the Darling Children. Wendy Darling, along with her two brothers fly to the island of Neverland, a
place that had lived in their imagination for years, but the true story is unbenounced to most everyone
who has read the text or seen the movie. How could such an innocent story have such a dark
background? A deeper look into the text shows grossly sexist ideals, dark sexual themes, and the
questionable past of the author. Possibly the most blatant ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As quoted by Eyal, Barrie is at once knowing about his interest in the sexualization of children unable
to resist puns and allusions...willing to hide from his self knowledge through dismissal and humor (17)
. The reader can see examples of his dark humor as early as the second chapter when Peter introduces
himself to Wendy. As Wendy learns that his name is just Peter Pan, she believes it to be
disappointingly short, and Peter becomes very defensive about the situation (Barrie 15). While it may
seem like small childish bickering, one must keep in mind the previously stated fact that Barrie found
sexual puns humorous. The argument is a phallic innuendo, referring to the disappointment women
feel upon realizing their male partner s penis is small, while a the man is typically defensive about it.
Not only does Barrie love puns and innuendoes, but he also keeps his choice of words in mind when
he is writing. While Peter is keeping watch of Wendy while she is asleep, it is said that ...some
unsteady fairies had to climb over him on their way home from an orgy (Barrie 45). Though an orgy
may refer a wild party, more often than not it is a large party, where there is rampant sexual activity
occurring. Should Barrie have meant that the fairies were returning from a party, why not say that
instead? By using the

When facing the problem of dealing with business projects that should be terminated early, a leader
should consider a number of important action steps described below. First, among these steps is
submitting the idea of what is to be achieved. An example of a project could be on mobile phone
based money transfer. It means that the presentation of all the relevant information of the project is to
be carried out, and all the necessary materials for its materialization (that is from development of the
product to the point where all the stakeholders get its utility) are to be provided. To do so, during one
week, experts should weigh out all the ideas, and come up with rational judgment (Loulakis,
McLaughlin, 2011). The project managers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Finally, during the fifth and the sixth weeks, a rough draft on how the team proposes for the
implementation of the project should be developed along with making a presentation of a final draft
on the process of the implementation (Mohanty Kar, 2012). During this stage, project managers
should critic the project, and also give there input. The schedule of work should be elaborated clause
by clause of every activity, and the timeline for each activity should be provided. If necessary, a
company leader may request for a committee from the team to be preparing reports on the project
implementation process (Goleman, 2000). Recommendations regarding Allowing Good Managers to
Make Mistakes without Public Embarrassment and Enabling them Learn from their Mistakes When
facing laxities in good managers work, a leader may consider a number of recommendations described
below. First, a leader should appoint an implementation committee (Goleman, 2000). The committee
should be ordained to prepare monthly reports on the progress of corporate stars, and an overview of
the implementation of the action plan. This action step is to be exercised during the first week of
working with the problem. The evaluations should attain for 100% in the implementation of the action
plan. This is basically judged from the monthly reports that the committee prepares. Secondly, the
other important action task for a leader is organizing of the input from the

Three Ways Of Speaking English And Suzanne Talhouk Speech
Language is a major part of everyone s life. Every country or even a community have their own
language or a way of speaking, and these are the things that differentiate people from one another.
Jamila Lyiscott speech, 3 Ways of Speaking English and Suzanne Talhouk speech, Don t Kill Your
Language on TED talks, addresses different issues related with language and the way of speaking a
particular language. Both of the speeches effectively use rhetorical elements or devices. Both of these
people are well known speakers, so they have some credibility even before they begin speaking. When
they do start their speeches, both effectively employ emotional appeal, facts and logic to convey their
intended message to the audience.
3 Ways to Speak English is a speech given by Jamila Lyiscott at TED talks. The speech she discusses,
her being articulate and giving example about it. She starts off by stating that she s a trilingual
speaker, and this is not because she can speak three different language, but she can speak English in
three different ways. She use those ways everyday, while talking to her family, her friends and in the
classroom. Even Though she s fluent in all three tongues, there are times she switch these ways up or
mix them just to add some fun.
The purpose or the message of a speech is the thought or the idea of the speaker that they had during
writing the speech. It s the message they want audience to receive through their words. The purpose of

Spanking As A Form Of Punishment
Every parent has had to face the question: how do I punish my child when they misbehave? Since
parenting does not come with a guidebook or set of rules, it is ultimately up to the parent to see that
bad behavior in their children is dealt with accordingly. For centuries, spanking has been the ultimate
choice of child punishment. However, there are many arguments against it today. Some say corporal
punishment of children can affect their personalities later on in life. Some people view physical
punishment child abuse. Where does the line lay between abuse and punishment? Other arguments say
that physical punishment of a child has no effect at all to the child; it teaches them neither right nor
wrong. Spanking is seen as a form of punishment ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Spanking is okay, in moderation, and only when done in a loving matter. Spanking must be done only
for a means of discipline, not abuse because, discipline is instilled to have self control,... whereas
abuse is acting without any control in behavior (Prabhat). Now, to ensure that spanking is done
effectively and not to excess, people must be in control of their own emotions and not caught up in a
bout of anger. The point of spanking is to teach, not let off steam. According to an article in Focus on
the Family, The most effective approach to spanking children is using these seven steps: Give the
child a clear warning beforehand, make evident the child s responsibility for his/her misbehavior,
avoid embarrassing the child at all costs, let the child know your disappointment as a parent, only swat
with a flick of the wrist to avoid too much force (Ingram). All of this can be accomplished with a
healthy parent child relationship where authority is established in a healthy manner. Incorporating
different forms of punishment can also be useful in developing that parent child relationship. Also, the
punishment must be proportionate to the wrong doings of the child; less naughty offenses should come
with lighter consequences, while more unruly behavior should come with harsher

How Japan Committed Crimes Against Humanity in Pursuit of...
Japan was one of the major powers of Axis Powers during the World War II. From 1937 to 1945,
Japan started a series of wars, and resulted in millions of casualties along the way. Japanese battlefield
consists of three parts: China, Pacific and Southeastern Asia. Japanese started these wars because they
wanted to gain resources and war advantages for their own country. Japan committed crimes against
humanity during their wars, which means they neglected human dignity and degraded human value by
humiliation. During the Sino Japanese War, the Pearl Harbor Attack and wars in Southeastern Asia,
Japan, in pursuit of self interest, violated human rights and committed crimes against humanity. Japan
s attacking China in 1937 is a crime ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Joseph Keenan, the chief prosecutor during the Tokyo Trial after the war, stated that the attack on
Pearl Harbor violated both the war agreement and was a deceitful and treacherous act: But the attack
of Pearl Harbor did not alone result in murder and the slaughter of thousands of human beings. It did
not eventuate only in the destruction of property. It was an outright act of undermining and destroying
the hope of a world for peace. (Keenan 57 58). In addition, the attack on Pearl Harbor was a crime
against humanity since Japan gave American soldiers no time to organize proper defense, and
deprived them of their right to fight for their safety. Japan also humiliated U.S. soldiers during the
attack, which is a violation against human dignity. Japan attacked the Pearl Harbor to weaken U.S. , as
a powerful response to U.S. oil embargo to Japan. In 1941, Japan and China reached stalemate, and
the former was in dire need of resources for a long war. U.S. and the Western oil sanction did not want
Japan to exploit the oil resources in China and Southeastern Asia, so U.S. set an embargo on oil to
restrict Japan. Japan wanted the resources, but was concerned with U.S. military power, so it decided
to strike a sudden attack to weaken U.S. in order to acquire resources and win the Sino Japanese war.
Clearly, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor to prevent U.S. intervention of Japanese interest, and Japan,
desperately wanting U.S. out

  • 2. Physics Of Bowling Kyle Yatsonsky Dr. Croom Physics 30 May 2015 The Physics of Bowling Bowling is a fun filled pastime with a lot more to it than what meets the eye. Some of the concepts involved are energy, momentum, forces, velocity, acceleration, and center of mass. The ultimate goal of a bowler is to knock down as many pins as he can. To successfully do this, a bowler needs to first consider the trajectory in which his ball travels down the lane. Energy is a system s ability to do work. (Elert) The unit for energy is joules. Some other characteristics of energy are that it takes numerous forms and that it is a scalar quantity.(Elert) The two types of energy are kinetic energy and potential energy. Kinetic energy refers to an object s motion. This differs ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The greater angle optimizes the number of pins that the ball will knock down. The way that the bowler controls this is in the manner in which he grasps the ball. It is dependent on the position that the bowler places his fingers and thumb. Rotational velocity is the main feature. The importance of rotational velocity is from the precession it provides the ball with. Precession is the change in direction of the bowling balls spin vector... over time (Physics Of Bowling.) Increasing precession leads to the domino effect. That is increasing amount of friction on the ball, so the hook that the ball strikes the pins is also greater. By default there is a greater angle for the bowling ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Airlines introduced railway style, uniformed stewards and restaurant style tables adorned with vases of flowers and silver cutlery. In 1928, Pan Am became the first US airline to employ cabin attendants to serve meals. In 1929, Pan Am introduced in flight movies on its flights between Miami and Havana (Dana, 1999). In 1930, United Air Lines introduced the world s first stewardess. Ellen Church was the first woman to serve a meal on an aeroplane. Pan Am preferred to employ stewards who had served as professional waiters or pursers on ships. In 1934, Pan Am inaugurated the S 42 on its route from Miami to Buenos Aires. The airline set a precedent by installing facilities for heating food in flight on long over water journeys. Stewards would take orders from passengers and radio ahead for meals, which were served to passengers in a special dining area of the aeroplane (Dana, 1999). Dinner in flight became a formal affair, often in tuxedos and evening gowns. Passengers enjoyed a feast, cooked aboard the aeroplane, and served on linen covered tables in a fine dining salon set with china, crystal and fresh flowers. During the 1940s and 1950s, passengers on the Boeing 377 Stratocruiser could get staterooms with private washstands, berths, divans,

Women In The Laboratory Explore the presentation of female voices in Shakespeare s Macbeth, Duffy s Medusa and Havisham and Robert Browning s poem (The Laboratory) Throughout history women have been expected to obey and serve men , especially their husbands. These ideas have been developed in society because of the powerful influence of religious doctrine. As a consequence, females have been subject to very narrow gender definitions. However, as presented in poems Havisham, Medusa and The Laboratory and the play Macbeth, certain women wish not to adhere to these idealised views. In fact, all the women in these texts display some anti female traits. In this essay, I wish to explore how Shakespeare, Duffy and Browning all give these women a voice to fight back at ... The use of sibilance also adds aggression to what s said by Medusa as saying the words make you spit. The idea of foul ness comes from the witches during act 1 scene 1 when they say fair is foul, and foul is fair. The idea of something bad being good creates the idea that doing the wrong thing is the right thing. So by the female protagonist being anti feminine can be seen as doing the right thing, and that they re making a stand for women everywhere. Which is echoed by Lady Macbeth, as in Act 1 Scene 5 it is deemed that she can also use her mouth as a weapon, this is scene in the quote chastise with the valour of my tongue . • 7. The City Of Pompeii And Pompeii In ancient Pompeii, there were many important establishments in the Forum. It was seen as the primal hub of the town, and due to the busy trading nature, a commercial centre for exchanging foreign goods was a necessity. However in Herculaneum, being a quiet fishing village, the structure of the Forum would have been very different to that of Pompeii. Most of the Italian municipalities in their time had a Forum, a square in their town where the political, commercial, and social lives are all intertwined. Not only did it act as a social meeting place for the residents, but it also functioned as the primary religious and economic sector of the city. In Pompeii the Forum was a large area measuring at around 157 by 38 metres, not including all the surrounding buildings (Unfortunately in Herculaneum, the forum is still uncovered). The Forum was lined with the most important buildings in the city. (See figure 1) In Pompeii particularly, the forum held the Municipal offices (A), Basilica (B), Temple of Apollo (C), Forum Olitorium (vegetable market) (C), Latrines (public toilets) (D), Temple of Jupiter (E), Macellum (marketplace) (F), Temple of the Lares (G), Temple of Vespasian (I), Building of Eumanchia (J), and a Comitium (voting house) (K). • 9. White Elephants Are Like An Abortion White Elephants are like an Abortion As we know conceiving a child is a life changing experience; indeed, it can sometimes be a good or a bad experience. In the story Hills like White Elephants, Hemingway s unnamed American male dominates the weaker sexed Jig Rankin. Throughout the story the American man is trying to convince the pregnant Jig to abort their baby. They are discussing a life and death situation, literally for the unborn child, and figuratively for their relationship. There are many themes that help make the story very intriguing. A few of the themes in the short story are courage, domination, addiction, and communication. The courage in the story comes from our character Jig. It seems that she is brave enough to go through with the pregnancy while the American man is too selfish and afraid, saying things like But I don t want anybody but you. I don t want anyone else. (478) He cannot face up to the change and challenge that life brings them. The man is very persistent in opposing of Jig s maternity, he even contradicts himself, calling the abortion first an awfully simple operation, and then not really an operation at all (476). Here and elsewhere, there are many modifiers like really and awfully that indicate that the man is not willing to take on this baby. We perceive other attributes directly from Jig though. Terrorism, according to the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, is the unlawful use or threatened use of force or violence by a person or an organized group against people or property with the intention of intimidating or coercing societies or governments, often for ideological or political reasons (Follendore). Terrorism was more myth than reality for most Americans until the attack of 9/11. The act of terrorism is meant to subdue societies with fear but it is impossible to instill fear without tools. Without capital, terrorists are unable to act; even terrorists are reliant upon money. Since their country of origin dislikes most terrorist groups, it is hard to set up businesses and become successful independently so an outside income source is required. Drugs and drug trafficking are huge moneymakers that are also tax free. The drug trade is cash based and full of money. James Bovard says in an essay that because narcotics are illicit, they tend to attract violent, ruthless people and organizations to carry out their production and marketing. That being said, while watching not only my mentee but the other mentees at Kids Count I ve come to realize the two biggest things they struggled at is reading and mathematics. Most students there struggle reading in general but they also struggle in pronouncing words. I sought to find an article that helped break down phonemes and I found the Blending Wheel article. What drew me to this specific article was the fact that this was a specific activity (a pretty cool one in fact), instead of instruction help. For the other article, most students there also struggle with the basics of mathematics, so I wanted to find an article that helped students learn mathematics in a fun way. I liked the shared story article because it brought together something that most people don t think of: reading and mathematics. It s great for us to realize as instructors that everything is related and can be used in conjunction with another. The first article, Blending Wheels: Tools for Decoding Practice, focuses on a tool, the blending wheel, which will help struggling readers of all ages practice blending sounds. As rates of obesity and DM2 increase for both adults and children in Australia halting and reversing this increasing trend has become a national and worldwide health priority (Australia s health 2012, 2012). This essay will illustrate how the drug Liraglutide can aid in reversing this trend and promote weight loss. Background The drug Liraglutide is seen on the market as two different medications, Victoza and Saxenda. Initially the drug was approved only for treatment of DM2 back in 2009, but recently was approved for treatment of obesity as well. The common but different forms differ slightly in their composition and so are used for different purposes, Victoza for diabetes and Saxenda for weight loss. The drug is recommend to be used as an adjunct to diet and exercise in the treatment of individuals with a BMI higher than 27 and for those with DM2 to achieve ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 20. IHSA Interview Essay Two days before the IHSA State Competition (which involves taking 35 people on a bus for 72 hours three hours south and competing in the Peoria Civic Center), a posting crept into my email for an Instructional Coach, a position that the district was not planning to create. This position, which did not have a job description attached, stated that a teacher at each building would become a TOSA (Teacher On Special Assignment) the following year to fulfill this role. I had two days to apply and would interview if selected, the next Tuesday. Good luck! Without a concrete description, I was hesitant to apply. Like my students, I like boundaries and guidelines (maybe even some sort of rubric). This role, whatever it turned out to be, would certainly push me outside of my comfort zone, encourage me to collaborate, and challenge me to create connections and content outside of my small and simple world in D15 the last hallway in the school. Flash forward through the brief and pithy process and I hear I am. The instructional coach for my building. So, you wanted to be an instructional coach? Now what? After meeting with the team of instructional coaches in my district, the tech integration specialists, the building principal, and the building leadership team (there have been a lot of meeting I m sensing a trend), I have begun to formulate my thoughts on what it means to be an instructional technology coach and how I can best serve my school. • 21. Machiavelli s Republic State Structure Simply put, for democracy to exist the state must be accordingly structured with principles of democracy. The key distinction between democracies and republics is within the limits placed on the state by the law, especially with concern for minority rights. Both systems generally use representational voting that often takes place in legislatures/parliaments. In a republic, a constitution will guarantee protection for individual rights that cannot be restrained by the government. By contrast, in a pure democracy the majority cannot be restrained in this manner and may, in fact, force its ideals on the minority. The most successful and ideal type representational republic is that of the Romans, which Machiavelli holds to a high ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These policies can be useful for future republics by also reducing them to their origins. Without constant renovation, they would not be able to last. Reverting to original principles is only possible through either external events or according to their own intrinsic good sense (III I). Thus for Machiavelli, comparing a states modern affairs with that of its ancient is the best means by which to draw political knowledge from them. True political liberty could only come from a rehabilitation of states standards. Because a republic is intended to preserve liberty and use it to promote general wellbeing, it is critical to regain freedom as soon as possible. Desperate times such as war, natural disasters, etc. always lead to a degree of degeneration, and so it is critical to adjust the government and its policies in order to regain what has been lost (I I, II). Ultimately, the structure of the Roman republic and Machiavelli s favorability of it is what distinguishes his true republican nature. As he advocates for a distribution of power rather than for it to be wholly vested in the people, it can be discerned that modeling a state after a Republic is the superior means by which to ... Having overcome great adversity by surviving the prohibition years, Coors durability and sustainability are also complimentary points on the structure of the company. Coors is a family owned company that had humble beginnings in Colorado and within 100 years grew into a multimillion dollar company. Coors controlled manufacturing process is a sign of their individuality in the beer industry, this was not an unknown fact, however, as they were receiving orders to ship Coors beer all across the nation as of 1972. The case study allowed an internal and external point of view, which was highly beneficial to properly analyze their upcoming problem within the company. Unfortunately, this case study highlighted a point in time where Coors was not performing well. The first visible sign of their struggles was in Quiz 4, which highlighted Coors income per barrel drastic deterioration from 1977 to 1985. The charts and graphs included at the back of the case study gave a graphic representation of the relatively low market share Coors held in 1977 and how this decreased in coming years compared to companies such as Anheuser Busch, Miller, Stoh, and Heileman. Market share is an important value driver when increasing a firm s performance based on a comprehensive value metrics framework, and with Coors industry market share being low this provides a problem. ... There she worked for six years and skilled herself in draping fabrics directly on live models. She was so dedicated to her passion that she worked twelve hours a day and often during lunch hours. However, an abundance of bacteria present can overcome the flushing power of the urinary tract and begin to grow. There are species of non pathogenic bacteria that inhabit the urinary tract and result in no symptoms for the individual. A problem arises when pathogenic bacteria enter the urinary tract and are not flushed away, this results in a urinary tract infection (UTI) (Foxman and Schaeffer, 2011). Two urine samples were tested in lab, one from a patient known to have a urinary tract infection and the other was of the researcher s urine. These samples were plated on a MacConkey s agar plate (which only allows for the growth of Gram negative bacteria) and on TSA plates (which allow the growth of both Gram positive and Gram negative bacterium). Colony counts for each plate were recorded and the number of colony forming units per millilitre (CFU/mL) was calculated by multiplying the number of colonies by the dilution factor. Overpopulation is a serious problem that will eventually have an extremely negative effect on our countries, and our planet. The problems that arise due to overpopulation could even prove to a fatal epidemic that will eventually wipeout the entire human race. Oftentimes this issue is overlooked due to lack of knowledge and understanding of the subject; or, simply because most of us are so blessed that we are not affected first hand by the problems it is causing this very second. Overpopulation, in my belief, is an enormously serious global issue that should be identified, analyzed, and controlled immediately. • 41. The Characteristics Of Language InThe Shining, And William... Introduction: Authors in the horror genre often use various writing techniques in order to create the horror characteristics they wish to include throughout their novels, and therefore I will analyse the techniques used by Stephen King and William Blatty in two of their most famous novels. The purpose of this comparative analysis is to discover what language and stylistic features Stephen King in The Shining and William Blatty in The Exorcist use to create characteristics of the horror genre. I will discover how both authors use important writing techniques such as foreshadowing, mystery, surprise, fear and suspense, in order to create a horror theme throughout their novels, and I will compare the similarities and differences in their writing techniques. In the end I am hoping to come to a conclusion where I thoroughly understand how both Stephen King and William Blatty both used language and stylistic features to create the theme of horror in both, The Shining and The Exorcist . Foreshadowing: Foreshadowing is used to create an image in the readers head before the event actually occurs so that the reader can predict what is going to happen. In The Shining by Stephen King, there is constant foreshadowing. Since the beginning of the book, hints are given to the reader as to what will happen later on in the novel. A lot of this foreshadowing is shown to the reader in the form of Danny s ability, the shining . Through his gift, he can often see hints of what will happen in the future. For example, he has constantly encountered the word REDRUM . At first, he has no clue what it means, but then, once he is already in the hotel, he figures it out. And then, eyes widening in horror, he saw the word REDRUM reflecting dimly from the glass dome, now reflected twice. And he saw that it spelled MURDER. Danny Torrance screamed in wretched terror (343). It s at this moment that the reader also realises the significance of the word REDRUM , as it becomes clear that the word is actually murder. It s at this moment that all the foreshadowing leads to a definite meaning. Foreshadowing is very prominent throughout The Shining . In The Exorcist however there are many moments that foreshadow upcoming ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. The Hierarchy Network Model For The Organization Of... Experiment 1 Experiment 1 is a partial conceptual replication of Collins and Quillian s (1969) study on the hierarchy network model for the organization of semantic memory. The purpose of experiment 1 was to test Collins and Quillian s hypothesis stating that response time for category searching should be slower as a function of an increasing number of levels separating a category subject and it s predicate term on the semantic hierarchy model. We use the same basic procedure as Collins and Quillian s experiment, except that we utilize a single category for predicate terms as opposed to multiple categories at level 2 of the semantic hierarchy model. Method Participants and Apparatus. 23 NYU students, taking lab in human cognition, received course credit for their participation in the experiment. The experiment was administered on standard PC s or Macintosh computers over a single class period. Design and Stimuli. The experiment was run using a within subject design, and consisted of one independent variable. The independent variable is the number of levels in the hierarchy separating the subject and predicate terms. There are three levels of the independent variable 0 levels of separation, 1 level of separation, and 2 levels of separation. The type of sentence stimulus presented to subjects, whether it was defined by a property or a superset , was an additional factor taken into account when analyzing the data. • 43. Egoism And Ethical Egoism Egoism is the idea of self interest. It elicits what controls, and give the ambitions our self interest. When philosophers carefully observed egoism. Their thesis of egoism voiced that our intuition controls what we do and there is two form of self interest. We have descriptive which they think temporarily that people s drives instantaneous aspiration. The normative way is where our self interest is developed based on experience and power. Theories of egoism also study the intentions behind our actions. For example, do we act for love, religion, or wealth? Who benefits from our actions, is it the individual or the whole of society? Two theories exist that try to answer these questions, namely the theories of Ethical Egoism and Psychological Egoism. Ethical Egoism is the normative theory that our self concept should not be viewed as solitary but instead as part of society. In this respect, our actions should also be for the benefit of society. Ethical Egoism isn t about self deprivation, but rather about helping yourself by helping others as well. It relies not just on improving one s self but also on improving the structure of society. The strong version of Ethical Egoism states that everything we do for our own good is moral and must always be promoted. The weak version states that although acting for one s own good is usually for the good of society on the whole, there may be conditions in which personal desires have to be suppressed in order to maintain social morality. The weak version integrates the individual into society in such a way that he or she must be willing to make sacrifices for the benefit of others. In contradiction to Ethical Egoism, Psychological Egoism presents itself as a much different perspective altogether. Psychological Egoism is the descriptive variant that states all human actions to be the result of selfishness. The core of this theory focuses on a different definition of self concept or ego. However, there are many identifiable fallacies of Psychological Egoism. Firstly, the theory is based on intangible terminologies of the inner self that cannot be physically examined. Furthermore, when we do try to study Psychological Egoism in terms of scientific observations such as human ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Wendy Darling, along with her two brothers fly to the island of Neverland, a place that had lived in their imagination for years, but the true story is unbenounced to most everyone who has read the text or seen the movie. As quoted by Eyal, Barrie is at once knowing about his interest in the sexualization of children unable to resist puns and allusions...willing to hide from his self knowledge through dismissal and humor (17) . The reader can see examples of his dark humor as early as the second chapter when Peter introduces himself to Wendy. As Wendy learns that his name is just Peter Pan, she believes it to be disappointingly short, and Peter becomes very defensive about the situation (Barrie 15). While it may seem like small childish bickering, one must keep in mind the previously stated fact that Barrie found sexual puns humorous. The argument is a phallic innuendo, referring to the disappointment women feel upon realizing their male partner s penis is small, while a the man is typically defensive about it. Not only does Barrie love puns and innuendoes, but he also keeps his choice of words in mind when he is writing. While Peter is keeping watch of Wendy while she is asleep, it is said that ...some unsteady fairies had to climb over him on their way home from an orgy (Barrie 45). • 47. Spanking As A Form Of Punishment Every parent has had to face the question: how do I punish my child when they misbehave? Since parenting does not come with a guidebook or set of rules, it is ultimately up to the parent to see that bad behavior in their children is dealt with accordingly. For centuries, spanking has been the ultimate choice of child punishment. However, there are many arguments against it today. Some say corporal punishment of children can affect their personalities later on in life. Some people view physical punishment child abuse. Where does the line lay between abuse and punishment? Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Spanking is okay, in moderation, and only when done in a loving matter. Spanking must be done only for a means of discipline, not abuse because, discipline is instilled to have self control,... whereas abuse is acting without any control in behavior (Prabhat). Now, to ensure that spanking is done effectively and not to excess, people must be in control of their own emotions and not caught up in a bout of anger. The point of spanking is to teach, not let off steam. According to an article in Focus on the Family, The most effective approach to spanking children is using these seven steps: Give the child a clear warning beforehand, make evident the child s responsibility for his/her misbehavior, avoid embarrassing the child at all costs, let the child know your disappointment as a parent, only swat with a flick of the wrist to avoid too much force (Ingram). All of this can be accomplished with a healthy parent child relationship where authority is established in a healthy manner. Incorporating different forms of punishment can also be useful in developing that parent child relationship. Also, the punishment must be proportionate to the wrong doings of the child; less naughty offenses should come with lighter consequences, while more unruly behavior should come with harsher ... It did not eventuate only in the destruction of property. It was an outright act of undermining and destroying the hope of a world for peace. (Keenan 57 58). In addition, the attack on Pearl Harbor was a crime against humanity since Japan gave American soldiers no time to organize proper defense, and deprived them of their right to fight for their safety. Japan also humiliated U.S. soldiers during the attack, which is a violation against human dignity.
