Consumerism Woodhouse Summary
In consumerism Woodhouse starts off by telling his audience what consumerism is. Woodhouse also
talks about the benefits of it such as stimulating the economy and facilitating peoples liberties to shape
their identities and cultures . This is followed by the downside of consumerism that it is a manipulated
and environmentally destructive habit leading to too many units of stuff being designed, produced,
advertised, sold, and discarded . This brief introduction really helps lay the foundation for the rest of
the article and foreshadows what will be talked about.
Woodhouse then goes into the agents . The agents are the ones that are actually responsible for
producing consumerism. These are the chemists that created harmful synthetic pesticide, product
designers that create new and attractive products, and civil engineers that build roads that create urban
sprawl as just a few examples. Without this group of people there would be no production of a ...

The means is just the technological advancement of today s world. Woodhouse uses examples of
means such as research, marketing, and technology in general. This is a crucial point in consumerism
because without the means then the agents wouldn t have the capability to mass produce items. This
nonhuman technology also gives agents a certain level of calculability, and predictably, unprecedented
to others.
Woodhouse also explains that without sites then businesses and governments wouldn t have anywhere
to test their ideas or develop new ideas. Fast food restaurants, military research and development, and
college universities are all places of research. College universities are a good example because they
get government grant money to test new theories and technologies. If anything should prove
successful during research though it is almost guaranteed that it will be mass produced and used to
help stimulate the economy creating tax

A Discussion of the Social Effects of Biotechnology Essay
A Discussion of the Social Effects of Biotechnology
The world of work in agriculture is in a process of rapid change. While change is by no means alien to
agriculture, something new has entered the arena which promises and/or threatens to fundamentally
alter agricultural practices across the globe. Biotechnology has already begun to be implemented
resulting in what may be important shifts in not only agricultural production, but indeed changes in the
very makeup of agricultural products themselves. This promises to pose serious challenges and/or
opportunities to farmers across the globe. However, this may of course depend where it is particular

By 2000, robotics, will increase planting and harvesting efficiency. But the biggest change is the
revolution of genetic engineering. Already in hundreds of trials, gene manipulation in plants has
created variations able to withstand lethal environmental conditions and pestilence. Creating new
animal replicants is so near on the horizon, you can t get a clear missile shot at it. Moreover, although
the United States pioneered the biotech, other countries are hot on our heels. The implication of this
race is simply put by OTA s Michael Phillips: We ve been leaders in basic research, but adapting and
getting it to industry and marketplace has proved a stumbling block. And whoever gets to market first,
wins. (Omni, New York, Jan 1993)
Keehn remarks:
The proponent s of today s genetic engineering movement say that they have brought [Rachel] Carson
s vision to life, creating in their laboratories a cornucopia of fruits, vegetables and grains whose
genetic traits have been altered, heralding the birth of a brave new world for agriculture. Consider this
advertisement for Monsanto, and early plug for their biotechnology program. The ad focuses on a
single stock of corn, growing in a desert. Underneath appears this message: Will it take a miracle to
feed the world? The implication?

How Is Piggy Related To Lord Of The Flies
As Piggy and Ralph walked to Castle Rock to retrieve Piggy s stolen glasses from Jack. All of a
sudden, they heard a noise coming from a banana tree. In the banana tree there was a monkey with an
object in its hand. Piggy was struggling to see what the object was, but Ralph had to get a closer look
to figure out what it was. As Ralph had got closer to the banana tree he noticed the object was
reflecting light. He whispered to Piggy I think it s your glasses. The monkey became startled and ran
off, the boys followed. During the chase to retrieve the glasses the monkey disappeared into a hollow
area. It turned out to be a magical cave. They were both uncertain if they should enter, but they knew
that if the monkey had his glasses they could

Sandwich Bikes
In the world of home exercise equipment, few pieces have been around as long as the exercise bike.
Although exercise bikes (fitness bikes, studio bikes) received a bad rap for a number of years, being
used as clothes hangers, etc., the new versions are sleek, silent, and easy to use.
There are two basic types of bikes, the upright and the recumbent. An upright is what most people
think of when they think of fitness bikes. The upright is closest to a regular bike, narrow saddle,
pedals below the rider, handle bars out front. On the other hand, a recumbent exercise bike has a wider
seat with a small back support. The pedals are out front, and the rider is in a reclined position. Both
bikes have good and bad points as we shall see.
The traditional setup of an upright bike allows the rider to more closely simulate an actual bike ride
than possible with a recumbent. The rider is able to stand, assume a race crouch, or a neutral position.
Trouble is, if the rider has any sort of back problems, especially lower back, an upright can irritate the
condition leading to worse problems. An upright is more difficult to get on and off of because of a
higher proximity to the ground. This can be problematic for older or overweight people. An upright
takes up less room than a recumbent. You may want to keep this in mind if your exercise area is on the
small side. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Totalitarian Autocracy
First of all, Friedrich and Brzezinski (1965) distinguish between traditional autocracy and ancient
tyranny, and in the other hand, totalitarian dictatorship. In their view, totalitarian regimes exemplified
by communist and fascist dictatorships are qualitatively different from traditional autocracy in that
they harness modern means of communication and a mass party in systematic effort to exert control
over the subject population, primarily for ideological purposes. In all autocratic regimes, the ruler is
not accountable to anyone else for what he does and the one who make the decisions. Totalitarianism
is an autocracy based upon modern technology and mass legitimation. The Soviet Union and its East
European satellites, Nazi Germany and fascist Italy, Mao s China and Castro s Cuba are given as
examples of totalitarian regimes. According to F B, totalitarian systems have 6 traits: 1 An ideology
that is the declared enemy of religion, or which seeks to subsume religion within itself, turning
churches and clergy into collaborators of the regime; 2 A single mass party, typically led by one man,
the dictator, consisting a relatively small percentage of total population (up to 10 percent) which acts
as a political vanguard, infusing all parts of society and state with official doctrine; 3 A system of
physical and psychological terror extending over the entire nation, including essential parts of the state
such as the military, secret police, bureaucracy and the cadres; 5

Territorial Expansion DBQ
Manifest destiny and territorial expansion divided the United States from 1830 to 1860 through views
on Texas, disagreements regarding whether or not it was justifiable to travel west for land, and how to
handle the war that may have arisen as a result of territorial expansion. There was much division
among Americans regarding what should be done with Texas. Some argued that it should join the
other states so that there could be peace between them and Texas (Document F) and that it would
make the slaves more comfortable by providing them with more land and support (Document C.)
However, others argued that annexing Texas would create a dangerous imbalance of slave and free
states. In Document B, Reverend William Ellery Channing claimed that By annexing Texas, we shall
not only create [slavery] where it does not exist, but breathe new life into it, where its end seemed to
be near. In other words, by including Texas as a free state, slavery would only continue to spread for a
longer amount of time than it would have originally. This would, of course, extend the entire conflict
of whether or not slavery was just. This controversy over Texas greatly divided the states amongst
themselves. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One example of this belief can be seen in Document E, when Senator Thoman Corwin of Ohio
excitedly prompted Americans to claim the Bay of San Francisco for it is the best harbor on the
Pacific! Those who believed this viewed westward expansion as a right given by their God (making it
completely natural), and that it should be automatically provided to them because of that. However,
some others believed that taking this land was entirely uncalled for. Many other people viewed that
coming in on Mexican land would be wronging [the natives] (Document H.) Although this was not the
predominant opinion of the time, it was most certainly not an entirely obsolete one among

Southwest Asia
Southwest Asia is the term geographers use when referring to the Middle East. Middle East is a
political term coined by the British in the 1930 s to distinguish the region from both the Far East,
which included China, Japan and Indochina, and the Near East, which included portions of Western
Europe. All of these areas are truly only east of Europe. In order to emphasize a more global
perspective, geographers prefer to use the politically neutral term Southwest Asia because it does not
connote a Western European bias.

The traditional meat for kebab is lamb, but depending on local tastes and taboos, it may now be beef,

Detroit Is Not A Blank Canvas
Some people believe that Detroit is comparable to a blank canvas. A place where an opportunity is
lurking right around the corner. They imagine it as a deserted place, in which a businessman can create
anything they dream of. However, the harsh reality is, Detroit is not a blank canvas. It has been
splattered with an era of prominence, scribbled on with the invention of the automobile, and engraved
with a history of racism and corruption. Although much of Detroit s glory has been stripped away,
there are still people who exist in the city s remnants. Actual people, with actual families, actual
homes, and actual lives. When outsiders talk about the city s revival, they are often forgetting about
these people, or the actual citizens of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are many factors to point blame at when considering Detroit s failure. A city that was dependent
on manufacturing cars was bound to flounder when the factories moved elsewhere. Tensions among
races became prevalent throughout the city, ending with whites moving into the suburbs. Corruption
consumed the city s government, and the leaders led the city into the ground. The aftermath of these
actions have been thrown upon the people who stayed in the city of Detroit. These people are living in
unsafe conditions due to the fact crime rates are so high, and the police presence is so scarce. The
children are apart of a failing education system; the foundation of the buildings aren t up to public
health code, they have limited resources, and a lack of teachers willing to work. When talking about
the future of Detroit, where does one see the future for these people? Why is there a new hockey arena
being built, while the deteriorating schools are being left to fall apart? Large sums of money are being
poured into the city s assets, but the investors are forgetting the most important asset of Detroit, it s
people.
When talking about the endless opportunities Detroit has to offer, one common plan is the idea of
Detroit becoming a tourist city. Investors view downtown as a diverse entertainment district, with an
array of theatres, museums, casinos

Family Religious History

PHIL 110 ADF
Family Religious History
I grew up with my maternal grandparents in China. From an early age, I was taught the notion of filial
piety, paying respect to elderly members while making concessions to the younger members. It plays a
central role in my family as well as the families in which my grandparents came from.
My grandmother is born in a scholarly family heavily influenced by teachings of Confucianism. Strict
rules apply to how children should behave to show respect to adults. For instance, children are not
allowed to eat before adults begin eating, which exemplifies the belief that parents are authoritative
over children. Unlike her parents, my grandmother is not keen on being an authoritative figure. She
believes that a mutually respectful relationship with everyone regardless of age is the key to a
harmonious family. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I have adopted a secular view on traditions. Rather than accepting filial piety as an obligation, I see it
as a guide to the moral conducts. Making sacrifices means more of a duty to preserve my cultural
identity than a religious experience.
My grandfather, on the other hand, is from a poor, rural family. Although his family did not enforce a
harsh discipline which is derived from the notion of filial piety, he is the most pious devotee to
traditional practices in my family and sees filial piety as an obligation. It is his way of showing
reverence to his mother, who changed his course of life. Despite the meager income, my great
grandmother insisted on him to complete his college education so that he could find work that allows
him to escape poverty. He feels heavily indebted to

role transitions. Jen is attempting to juggle being a student, a sorority girl and the good child for her
parents, which may have resulted in her recent binge eating. However, I believe that Jen may also be
experiencing interpersonal deficits. Jen s problems could possibly stem from her childhood. Since, her
older brother was the family s problem child , Jen felt the need to be the good child and pressured
herself to be well behaved and maintain good grades. What are some areas of strengths for Jen? Some
areas of strength for Jen include her ability to work hard and her determination. Jen s history of

The Atomic Bomb Of World War II
The atom bomb was no Great Decision. It was merely another powerful weapon in the arsenal of
righteousness said Harry S. Truman. The atomic bomb is considered a weapon of mass destruction
because of the insurmountable damage and causalities such attack can cause. The United States
resorted to the creation of such incredible weapon as a means to annihilate or alter the Axis powers.
However, this all began due to the September 1, 1939, German attack to Poland and the Pearl Harbor
bombings by Japan. These actions by the Axis powers would result in one of the deadliest global wars
in human history. World War II involved the vast majority of the world s nations. An estimated 50
million to 85 million died in the events that occurred in World War II. The origin and development of
the atomic bomb during World War II changed forever the direction of the war and posed the United
States as a champion in military strategies; this endeavor also known as the Manhattan Project served
as catalyst in WWII. During this time, the world s most intelligent scientists discovered that German
physicists were learning to produce a bomb that could cause immense destruction. The fear of such a
bomb led scientists Albert Einstein and Enrico Fermi to inform President Franklin D. Roosevelt of
Germany s plans. Renowned scientist, Albert Einstein had fled Nazi persecution and was by then
living in the United States; he delivered a letter to President Roosevelt on October 11, 1939. In the

land based operations along with assisting other branches of the service. Our modern army is
descended from the Continental Army, which was formed on June 14, 1775 in order to fight in the
Revolutionary War before the United States was an established country. Later, on June 3, 1784, the
Congress of the Confederation created the United States Army to replace the dismantled Continental
Army. There are differences of opinions as to when the official birthday of the Army is. Some consider
1784 as the start of our Army, while others say June 14, 1775 is the official birthday of the United

There are many AIT schools; and at the schools you will get a hands on education and field instruction
to enhance your expertise in the chosen field. I will do AIT at the Engineering School, because of my
chosen job, Combat Engineer, also called Sappers. Sappers are very important to the success of any
Army mission. During the Advanced Individualized Training, as a Sapper, I will learn a wide variety
of engineering skills that may include: bridge building, structural maintenance, and electrical repair.
There are different tasks generally for Combat Engineers that go with the skills taught including:
building and constructing bridges, minefield clearance and detonation, and any other task requiring the
specialized skills, (www.wood.army.mil/sapper). Sappers sometimes work with other branches to clear
a route of obstacles and rivers for a convoy to pass or ground troops to pass. Detecting the mines will
be done visually as well as with detectors. Sometimes they have to fix floating bridges, so learning to
swim can be important. Also, they construct fighting, obstacle, and defensive positions during special
missions. Combat Engineers primarily supervise and serve or assist as a member of a team when
tackling rough terrain in combat situations. The expertise provides mobility, counter mobility,
survivability, and general engineering duties. To do all the duties I previously mentioned, you must
first take the Armed Services Vocational Battery and get at least an 87. I made a 99.6, which says I am
very adaptable. This test will help you understand your strengths and identify if Combat Engineering
is your right fit. Engineers require additional 14 weeks of One Station Unit Training,

DBQ #5: Slavery and Sectional Attitudes, 1830 1860
During the mid 1800 s many Americans began to have mix feelings over the issue of slavery. Many
northern Americans believed that slavery was morally wrong and that it was an evil. Southerners on
the other hand believed it was a good for the economy as well as for commerce. This great split of
attitudes between the north and the south eventually led to threat of the civil war. The North saw the
issue of slavery as an evil. They believed that slavery was an impurity that became accustomed to life

The, The Director And Narrator Of The Film, By Jamie Johnson
In the documentary The One Percent the director and narrator of the film, Jamie Johnson, gives

Pharmaceuticals and his father inherited a fortune of one billion dollars. In the documentary, Jamie
Johnson takes on the character of a filmmaker seemingly disinterested by his and his family s overly

This sign foreshadows and symbolizes the exclusive nature of the upper class that Johnson describes
later in the film. He begins to make conversation with a woman who has a British accent. A study
done by Howard Giles with the department of Psychology at the University of Bristol, states Their
[Wallace Lambert and colleagues] work has shown that stereotyped impressions of an individual s
personality may be formulated by listeners when presented with a speaker s voice whose vocal
contours are representative of phonological patterns peculiar to specific group membership. (Giles)
Plainly, when people hear an accent, subconsciously they connect it with their previous experiences
involving people with that accent. Because the British are often known for their history of wealth,
power, monarchies, and luxurious culture, the average viewer of the documentary will subconsciously
and inherently connect the women s British accent to wealth and authority. At this point in the film,
upon hearing her voice the viewer will have a broad understanding of what the documentary is about
before even being presented the formal narration of Johnson s thesis. The spying concept, the
luxurious environment, and the audio of refined music and voice all come together as elements that
make this scene extensively persuasive.
Shortly after the introduction, Johnson presents a wave of facts and statistics by using simple graphic
animations. These facts and

The Reflection Of Living With Jesus Christ In The World
While living and serving in a Chiang Mai prison in Thailand, I met with a radical Muslim man named,
Ali, who was serving a life sentence in the Thai prison because, he murdered a Thai woman. As
growing up in Pakistan, it is very challenging to love those who persecute and hate you. Initially, he
didn t want to do anything with Christianity. But after meeting him for at least six months, with
difficult conversations, he decided to accept Jesus Christ as his personal savior. From that point on, I
had to leave all my hard feelings behind and accept him as a part of the body of Christ and take care of
him. Honestly, I had to listen him cry and suffer in the Thai prison. But in the midst of all that
suffering, I had to stand right beside him, fight for his basic rights in the Thai judicial system,
communicate with the Pakistani embassy in Bangkok, Thailand, and wrap my arms around him.
Today, we will learn together from the passage 1 Corinthians 12:12 27 in which Paul uses a metaphor
of a body to describe diversity and unity in the body of Christ and its functions and how do we need to
take care of those who are facing extreme persecution.

Using metaphors were and still are pretty common in the Middle Eastern culture to obtain deeper
understanding of a phenomenon. In the Old Testament, the term body mostly refers to the physical
body. But here Paul uses the term body in a metaphorical way to help its readers to understand the

The Cost Of Living By Carlos Fuentes
The Cost of Living
The Cost of Living by Carlos Fuentes, starts with Salvador Renteria and his wife Ana. Ana has been in
bed for two weeks and is very ill. Salvador comforts his wife while she is lying in bed. He tells her not
to worry and that she will get better soon. Salvador shows his love for his wife while she is sick. She
asked Salvador to check her messages at the office, he told her that the office wanted her to come in
person to sign (Fuentes 451). We can note from this that during this time period medicine wasn t very
advanced. When someone needed highly advanced medicine, it was very expensive and rare to get.
A shopkeeper tells Salvador that Life en Espanol hadn t arrived yet (Fuentes 452). Carlos Fuentes tells
us this because he wants us to get the feel for the setting of the story. This also can stereotype that the
life in Mexico can prove to be economically difficult.
The story is focused in the mid 1950s during political corruptness. The setting is located in Mexico
City, Mexico. Carlos Fuentes expresses this because he wants us to get the feel for the setting of the
story. This also can stereotype that the life in Spanish can be economical hard. I believe that Carlos
chose this time era because he wanted people to see how life was the back then compared to how it is
today. The point of view takes us back in time to where medical treatment wasn t available, unlike
today. Salvador leaves his house and is walking down the street when a young

A Teacher s Assistant For An Afterschool Program Essay
As a teacher s assistant for an afterschool program called Good Grades Academy, I decided to the
vocabulary as an extension of the classroom teacher s comprehension unit. My vocabulary game was
based on a lesson involving literary elements for fifth grade students. I worked with a fifth grade
student named Bartek who is eleven years old. His strengths lie in his ability to figure out challenging
math problems, but he struggles in the areas of reading and comprehension. Bartek decoding skills are
on par with his grade level, but his comprehension skills are representative of a third or fourth grade
level. He cannot recall important information in the text and his writing responses are unrelated to the
text. In addition, Bartek often lacks motivation and has difficulty completing his work. He cannot sit
still and disturbs the other students working in the classroom. When asked to complete work related
tasks he states that it is too difficult and is inattentive when receiving instruction. I decided to play the
vocabulary game with him because it would be a fun and interactive way to help him learn words.
After the students in the afterschool program finish assigned work they are allotted time for fun
activities, so I used this opportunity to implement the vocabulary game. The purpose of my game was
to clarify literary elements that Bartek was working on understanding. As stated in the Core manual

Modernism and Imagism, two movements in literature ,which were developed in the

Death In Romeo And Juliet Essay
Brianna Isabella Reyes Ms. Taccone Period D 11/16/17 The Fault of Death in Romeo and Juliet I am
the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul. This is a line from a poem written by William
Ernest Henley. Self control is where you control your own fate and you guide your own soul, Henley
expressed this through that quote. His idea can be applied to many things, one being the story of
Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. In the story, the characters are big believers in fate where
courses of events are beyond their control. Although some aspects of the book can be under the
impression of fate, death isn t one amongst them. There has been a debate on whether the tragedy of
death is at the person s fault or fate. In Romeo and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Tybalt is enraged in the presence of Romeo, let alone the relationship Romeo has with his cousin.
After a brawl between Tybalt and Mercutio, Romeo becomes livid in the moment (3.1). Romeo feels
he should have fought Tybalt instead of Mercutio, who is now dead, because he feels ne needs to
prove his masculinity after entering his relationship. Caught in his own rage, Romeo pulls out his
sword, fights, and kills Tybalt (3.1). Once again, Romeo displays lack of self control. This fight leads
to an even bigger reason for conflict in Juliet and Romeo s marriage, hence the chain of events leading
up to Romeo s death. He could have easily took the time to evaluate the situation and realize that he
didn t need to justify his manliness, not to mention killing someone. The ultimate example of Romeo s
lack of self control is when he finds out that Juliet is dead . From dramatic irony, we know that Juliet
wasn t really dead. Romeo, however, goes frantic and jumps to far conclusions where he believes that
the only way to be with Juliet is to kill himself (5.1 2). Romeo decides to buy poison for himself
before he even goes to see Juliet! When he does go to Juliet s tomb, he doesn t take time to realize she
s only sleeping. He immediately drinks the poison as a reaction of seeing her in the tomb (5.3). If he
waited in a matter of minutes, Juliet would ve woken up and they could successfully run away happily

Rust And Tears. The Pitter Patter Of The Rain Against The
Rust and Tears The pitter patter of the rain against the attic window was a soft, constant sound. It felt
to Joyce as though the rest of the world were mourning with her and the thought comforted her in a
strange and sad way. The world was an infinitely duller place without her grandmother, Annabelle,
and it was felt by many. The funeral and reception had been over for only a few hours, but Joyce
found that she couldn t sleep and would rather be productive than stare at the water stain on the corner

for what felt like a moment, she fingered the lid off and found a plethora of aged letters, pictures and
even some ripped up pieces of old notebook paper. It distinctly and heartbreakingly smelled of rust

thud against the wooden floors. She looked down to find a brass heart shaped necklace that looked old
and worn, obviously loved and beginning to rust from age. She picked it up tenderly, fearing she
would break the fragile looking necklace. She looked closer to better make out the brass engraving,
which was a molding of a small, beautiful tree of life, which is now nearly covered in rust. Fingering
the back as she held it, she found her fingers caught on an uneven surface, and flipped it over to
investigate. It was a second engraving that was faded, she moved the locket closer to her face to read

Independence. Before the Constitution of the United States, the Articles of Confederation serve as the
first plan of a national government for the thirteen American states. (pg.17) The Articles allowed the
states to retain most political power. (pg.17) Other features of the document were that it preserved
state autonomy, guaranteed equal representation for the states, and it granted the central government
only a few important powers . (pg.17 18) However, it provided no separate executive branch and no
national courts, and it made the amendment almost impossible . (pg.18) It never really occurred to me

Unreasonable Searches In Public Schools
A search is an examination of a person, place, or vehicle for contraband or evidence of a crime (Harr,
Hess, Orthmann, Kingsburry, 2015, p. 198). Searches are essentially invasions of someone s privacy
and, therefore, are stringently regulated by the Fourth Amendment. A seizure is a taking by law
enforcement or other government agent of contraband, evidence of a crime, or even a person into
custody (Harr et al., 2015, p. 199). The Fourth Amendment also closely regulates seizures. The Fourth
Amendment prohibits unreasonable searches and seizures and demands that any search or arrest
warrant be founded on probable cause. The increase of educational and social development of students

Women and Advertisements Essay
Women and Advertisements
The average American is exposed to hundreds of advertisements per day. Advertisements targeted
toward females have an enormous effect on women s thoughts, attitudes, perceptions, and actions.
Most of the time, women don t even realize these advertisements are formulating self image issues.
These ideals surround them daily and they become naturalized to the ads. Advertising creates an entire
worldview persuading women to emulate the images they see all around them. In order to create a
market for their products, companies constantly prey upon women s self esteem, to feel like they aren
t good enough just the way they are. This makes women constantly feel stressed out about their
appearance (Moore). Advertising ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The ideal weight portrayed in advertisements keeps decreasing, which is making dieting more popular.
Fad diets area everywhere trying to give us loose weight quick plans. According to a study done by the
Body Image Project in 2000, roughly 80 percent of 10 year olds have already tried dieting ( What ).
Dieting advertisements even depict overweight women as miserable. They are slightly overweight
with stringy hair and a frown on their face. Women relate to this image and become unhappy with
themselves like the women in the picture. The people in the after photos always look so glamorous!
They are slimmer, happier, have a smile on their face, and total makeovers. Even the advertisements
for weight loss products are fake and exaggerated, but women see these images and want to be like
them. These diets are too strict and not long term, thus, creating a recurring cycle of disappointment
and failure. There are diet pills, cellulite creams, metabolism boosters, and even products that claim to
put exercise in a bottle at every end cap of major discount stores ( Every ). All these products
encourage women to want to look better.
Companies need to advertise a healthy lifestyle rather than telling people they should do whatever it
takes to look like the images seen on TV. Women have a sense of pride when they loose a few pounds
or have a good hair day. That feeling is rapidly taken away when they compare themselves to these
manufactured images. Poor self esteem ensues.

My Experience To The Museum Of Modern Art
When I visited the Museum of Modern Art, the exhibits were fascinating, intense, but interesting. Out
of all the pieces, only two types of art stood out to me; Asian and African art. There were two
sculptures that displayed extreme value from not only the culture but from the artists who created
them. It was intriguing to see what my perspective and the people s beliefs and usage of the sculptures
meant at the time. And to also look into the great value and historical meaning behind them. I will
discuss how I encountered the pieces and how they both looked like through my up close observation
of them.
The museum was very crowded when I arrived as well. There was an extraordinary amount of Greek,
Egyptian, and Roman Catholic art pieces being displayed. Which is why I struggled trying to look for
art pieces that were related to what topics about our art history class. Once I came back for the second
time, I finally found a way to find the appropriate art pieces to write about. The organization of the
pieces being presented was nice but hard to locate. Even with using the map, I realized that if the
musuem is too busy, that it will be very easy to get lost. Luckily, I asked a lot of people to help guide
me so I could find what I am looking for. In the end, I finally got the background information of the
art pieces I needed. By the way, finding the Nolan Library was extremely hard and I had to ask about

When Christopher Marlowe, the most famous playwright in his time (Lace, 79), died, William
Shakespeare was his successor. Shakespeare decided drama was to be his career after seeing the
Queen s Players during a visit to his hometown of Stratford on Avon in 1587 (Lace, 79). By the time
of Marlowe s death, Shakespeare was already well known for his three part Henry VI in 1592 (Lace,

became the most outstanding playwright of his time (Lace, 79). Before Elizabeth s reign was over,
Richard II , Julius Caesar , Henry V , and Hamlet had been performed (Lace, 79). James Burbage was
the second most influential actor of the Elizabethan period, but not only for his acting talent. Burbage
built the first ever public playhouse in England, opening in 1576 (Unknown, 218). Burbage financed
the building of The Theater alone, a well off man but was still considered a rogue. Actors were not the

The topic of this week had a few questions concerning officer discretion and the amount that officer

officer may have felt that to engage the individual that threw the elbow would have allowed the

perhaps the officer simply felt that the situation best be handled at a later date. All or none of these

Alcohol Summary
* Executive Summary
In 2001 spirit makers ended a long standing volunteer policy against aggressive alcohol advertising
(Steiner and Steiner, 2009). Since that time, there has been an unprecedented shift toward increased
alcoholic advertisements in an effort to increase market share and raise profits. This shift brings into
light the challenge alcoholic companies face in balancing their fiduciary duties to their shareholders
and their corporate and social responsibility to society.
This report focuses on the issues surrounding Anheuser Busch s Spykes beverage and the corporate
and social issues similarly faced by other alcoholic beverage companies.

From society s perspective, any activities conducted by the alcohol beverage companies to remove
alcohol related problems like violence, decreased morality and intoxication related problems like
drinking driving are seldom advertised and marketed. In this sense, society is only seeing
advertisements related to increased consumption leading to increased profits. Accordingly alcohol
industries fail to fulfill their ethical duty to be informative and truthful in their advertising efforts.
At present, alcohol beverage companies create a brand image by sponsoring sports and cultural
activities that attract drinkers, first starting as a social drinker and then becoming regular drinkers
(Munro amp; De Wever, 2008). The current alcohol advertising regulatory system in Australia should
aim to minimize exposure and appeal to children (VAADA, 2010).
In Australia, advertising activities are regulated by legislation and a code of practice such as the
Advertiser Code of Ethics and Alcoholic Beverages Advertising Code (ABAC). This code is based on
a voluntary system of self regulation which is funded and administered by the alcohol beverage
companies. Currently there are no penalties for non compliance (Jones, Hall amp; Munro 2008).
Additionally, the organisation is partly funded by alcoholic beverage companies. This presents a
conflict of interest as in most instances, their fiduciary duties are act in the best interests of

I Appreciate Barbour s Praiseworthy And Toilsome Effort
III. Critique First of all, I appreciate Barbour s praiseworthy and toilsome effort to put theology and
science in a meaningful and fruitful dialogue, by seriously taking account of both continuities and
discontinuities between scientific metaphors and religious metaphors. For Barbour, because both
disciplines have continuities and discontinuities they can contribute to our more comprehensive
understanding of the reality of our experiences in the world through their metaphorical relationship.
While scientific models, theories, and paradigms are focused on the explanation of natural
phenomena, the religious counterparts are more focused on the human experience of their
natural/social environments and evoking moral and attitudinal responses, while religious affirmations
do not exclude truth claims like the scientific claims do. Also, like religion, scientists also hold on to
their traditions in their observation and interpretation of natural phenomena; hence, they are not
neutral. In that sense, I agree with Barbour that science and religion bear significant similitude, while
they can complement each other in our holistic understanding of our world. It seems to me that this is
well supported by Peacocke s concept of ontological monism. In our evolutionary understanding of
the world, we could contend with Peacocke that All concrete particulars in the world including human
beings with all of their properties are constituted only of fundamental physical

How does Fitzgerald present Gatsby s and Daisy s reunion as initially awkward in chapter 5?
Fitzgerald presents Gatsby and Daisy s reunion as initially awkward, through having their
conversations be stilled and abstruse, with both characters whereby behaving in an embarrassed and
vague manner. Furthermore, Fitzgerald also represents their initially awkward reunion through Nick,
of who bares witness to their reconciliation and of who, also, attempts to dissolve the tension between

Gatsby s strong and almost sudden reaction to Daisy speaking, proposes that Fitzgerald is attempting
to use emotive language, as to show Gatsby s urgency to resume some form of bond with Daisy.
However, due to Gatsby s abrupt and hurried reaction, the atmosphere, once again, becomes
constrained and abrasive, this shown when Nick narrates that, the automotive quality of Gatsby s
answer set us all back for another minute .
The use of Nick describing that Gatsby had Distraught eyes , suggests that Fitzgerald is trying to
perpetuate that Gatsby is nervous and scared to be within Daisy s presence, after so long. The use of
prenotification in this text, suggests that Fitzgerald is trying to foreshadow future circumstances
between the pair, but also, suggests that Gatsby is worried about their disconnected relationship.
Fitzgerald also uses emotive language within this text, with using Distraught , as to preserve the fact
that Gatsby is anxious and scared. This also perpetuates the sense of awkwardness between the pair, as
Gatsby is seen as being Distraught and positioning himself in a frigid manner, head leaned so far back
leaning against the mantelpiece , and Daisy being frightened but graceful , suggests that the pair are
having comparatively similar thoughts on the situation.
Fitzgerald also proposes the awkward nature of their initial meeting, through having Nick

The Demon Lover And The Disturbing Lover
Marriage has been an important aspect of life for thousands of years. While the world has not always
married people formally, the link between a wife, her husband, and both their families has been a
significant part of history; however, things change. Many women cheat and have children that are not
their husbands . It has been a problem since Mesopotamian society; at least, that is as far back as
society can trace it. Ancient societies started making laws against the adultery of a woman and
punished them for cheating. While the laws have disappeared, adultery has still continued through
history. Both the The Demon Lover by Elizabeth Bowen and the Scottish ballad The Daemon Lover
deliver messages in order to warn women to stay faithful to their partners, no matter the
circumstances. Bowen s The Demon Lover expresses a warning to women during times of war. The
story takes place at the beginning of World War 2 and tells the tale of a woman, Mrs. Drover, who
remarried after her fiance was presumed dead during his time in the war, but many years later,

children changed and the story of the woman changes. The ballad is more straight to the point and

Social Security a Challenge to Public Finance
The 1935 Franklin D. Roosevelt created the foundation for what today is Social Security. The bill
entitled the Economic Security Bill and was the starting point for Social security. (ssa.gov) Social
Security was enacted as part of the New Deal. Its purpose was to provide a safety net for the elderly
and their direct survivors, as well, temporary unemployment benefits. The funding was a compulsory
taxation of the employed workforce in shared responsibility with the employers (Hyman 2010 p. 312).
The legislation was clear on the system design during the time of creation. Pensions were funded
through tax payrolls, a separate tax for health insurance and finally the tax paid by the employers was
allocated to unemployment benefits.
The term public finance as defined is the spending by the government and methods required to pay for
spending (investorwords.com). Specifically, taxation and borrowing and the affect they have on the
overall budget. Social Security in the early years was considered a pension system of annuity monthly
payments. In1940, the ratio of workers to beneficiaries was 159.4. The average beneficiary had 159
individuals working to fund their annuity payments. In 2010 that number has depleted to 2.9 or for
every retiree, we have 2.9 employed individuals paying for 1 retiree or disabled individual (ssa.gov).

US Dollar Benefits
A U.S. dollar is an IOU from the Federal Reserve Bank. It s a promissory note that doesn t actually

the quote also references a different period of time in the history of the U.S. the time in which we did

The Negative Effects Of Oil Drilling
As polar ice in the Arctic region melts, there are many implications associated with it. The melting ice
opens up sea lanes, providing access to priceless natural resources, such as the estimated 90 billion
barrels of the world s undiscovered oil (Karaim 336). For the United States, this is a great opportunity.
Access to these energy reserves would open up expansion of the oil industry, which advocates of oil
drilling say will lead to extensive economic development (Karaim 335) in northern Alaska and the rest
of the Arctic region. However, scientists caution that an increase in oil drilling will have destructive
effects on the environment. Increased greenhouse gas pollution from oil drilling facilitate global
warming, which will melt even more polar ice, absorbing more sunlight and harming vivid Arctic
ecosystems. The higher risk for oil spills will harm marine wildlife, which translates to harming the
indigenous Arctic peoples. Their diets will be altered, new diseases will be introduced, and the
changing of the Arctic land will restrict their rich cultural traditions and lifestyles. Although oil
drilling will facilitate economic development in the Arctic, it should not be continued because its
implementation is not sustainable for the environment, nor does it improve the lifestyles of the
indigenous Arctic peoples.
One concern that scientists have regarding oil drilling in the Arctic is the perpetuation of climate
change that comes along with it. Expansion of the oil

Conformity In Walt Disney s Mickey Mouse Club
The Mickey Mouse Club is a television show that was created by Walt Disney and was produced by
Walt Disney Productions. The show was first aired by ABC from 1955 to 1960 and intermittently
aired from 1950 to 1996. The Mickey Mouse Club was a variety show for children that included a
carton, music and talent, a news segment and even a comedy segment. The cast members were called
Mouseketeers. Of the Mouseketeers, the teenage boys and girls faced the most challenges. While teens
in the 1950 s had a great understanding of conformity in terms of appearances and popularity, it was
the Mickey Mouse Club that reinforced conformity and an obsession with appearances. In the 1950s,
on shows like the Mickey Mouse Club, girls were defined by their bodies and had to strive to meet
strict standards of beauty. Guests on the show, even the youngest of performers always had perfectly
curled hair and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Jerry Bowles explains: part of the show s impact had to do with its really not being a children s show
at all, but, rather, a show that featured children playing the role of little adults. All of the values the
show taught...are things that adults think kids should be taught. By making gender role messages ever
present and stressing conformity and acceptance through appearance and behavior, The Mickey
Mouse Club strengthened white, middle class values as well as a sense of security in America s youth.
The Mickey Mouse Club attempted to suggest that security and happiness were attainable, providing a
comforting picture in world where the reality was much more in flux. Being attractive and well
mannered was a small but important part of growing up in a Cold War society dominated by visions of
an ideal white, middle class life. In encouraging these values in young children, viewers of the 1950s
absorbed these lessons from Walt Disney and The Mickey Mouse

Agriculture Interview
What do you think about when someone says Agriculture ? I think about all the hard working men and
women who have jobs associated with agriculture. For example, veterinarians, agronomists, wildlife
inspectors, and even my ag teacher. Today, I have interviewed my cousin, Sarah Marx, to help build
interest for myself as well as others in agriculture. Sarah grew up in Beemer, Nebraska. So, agriculture
has been an interest of her s her entire life. Sarah was apart of the Beemer Dreemers 4 H club for 12
years where she showed rabbits and helped with the other livestock shows. Now, Sarah lives on a farm
in Wisner, Nebraska where she has a horse training camp. She is also one of the Beemer Dreemers
club leaders.
Sarah has a job in accounting and quality control at Central Plains Milling in Howells, Nebraska.
Sarah attended college ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For one, I love being able to communicate with people. If you can communicate well, this might be a
job to consider. Another aspect I liked was accounting. I m a great math student and to be able to
incorporate math with my career will be great. Another aspect I like is being able to work in the
agriculture atmosphere. I ve been in 4 H for 9 years now and this is my first year of participating in
FFA. As a freshman in high school, I love looking at all of my options for my future. Agriculture has
been one of my career options since 7th grade. As I learn more and more about agriculture and how it
plays a very important part in the world, my interest grows stronger and stronger.
To prepare for this career, I would have to have lots of extra classes, be certified with all Microsoft
programs, be a certified office tech, have lots of experience, and communication skills. I am currently
certified in Microsoft Office PowerPoint and working on being certified in Excel and Word. Without
the help of technology, inbound and outbound truckers, mill workers, and farmers, Sarah s job would
be very

Sexism And Hostile Sexism
Sexism, is a prejudice plain and simple. One of the earliest forms of violence directed toward women
was the Witch Hunt Trials of the Middle Ages. Bishops debated whether a woman was really human at
all. If her nose were too long, she had red hair, a humped back, or if she was exceptionally beautiful,
she was thought to be a witch and was burned at the stake. There was an estimated nine million
women burned during the Witch Trials. During the Women s Liberation Movement in the 1960 s,
feminist theorists explained that oppression of women was widespread in nearly all human society,
and spoke of sexism instead of male chauvinism. Male chauvinists were usually individual men who
expressed the belief that they were superior to women (Napikoski). By the mid 20th century sexism
was established and began to appear in advertising. Between the 1970 s and 1990 s women began to
feel more equal to men until the 1980 s where they were portrayed as sex symbols on national
television (The Origin and History of SEXISM). There are two main types of sexism, benevolent and
hostile, and their definitions are opposite from one another. Hostile sexism is what most people
perceive as sexism today as it seems sexism is occurring more and more often and is, notably, more
vulgar. It is the notion that women are inferior or not as worthy; a belief that males are intrinsically
superior. For many years women have been degraded and looked down upon with the idea that their
place is in the kitchen with

arm gentle and caressing. She could not admit she was drawn to him. He spoke well, he dressed like a
wealthy noble, even if he was not one. It caused an ache in her heart, that she could not have this fine

respectability to the fact they spent time together. Oh, I quite agree that women in general suffer
maladies not well understood. I had hoped, in fact, to see if your treatments might help in this regard.
It was then that Colin offered her something she had not expected.
Though you may not have any obvious health problems, there are still many ways that people,
especially ladies, can be afflicted. Tiredness can be an affliction, one that needs to be loosened like a
knot blocking the proper flow of energy. Or frustration, manifested in a multitude of ways emotional,
physical, sensual, and others. The condition of female hysteria can also rear its ugly head in ways that
are subtle, long before they manifest in more disturbing ways. All of these can be treated with
mesmerism in some form or another, and as a doctor...your doctor, you have my word than anything
you reveal to me will remain strictly between us. He was totally serious in his earnest manner.
Lady Harriet had her hand on his arm when he said it. Her fingers trembled slightly. The subtle
mention of emotional, physical, and...sensual...had arrested her breath with shock. Before she could
ask what he meant by that, Albert returned with the tea cart. Hattie took a deep breath and accepted the

  • 2. Consumerism Woodhouse Summary In consumerism Woodhouse starts off by telling his audience what consumerism is. Woodhouse also talks about the benefits of it such as stimulating the economy and facilitating peoples liberties to shape their identities and cultures . This is followed by the downside of consumerism that it is a manipulated and environmentally destructive habit leading to too many units of stuff being designed, produced, advertised, sold, and discarded . This brief introduction really helps lay the foundation for the rest of the article and foreshadows what will be talked about. Woodhouse then goes into the agents . The agents are the ones that are actually responsible for producing consumerism. These are the chemists that created harmful synthetic pesticide, product designers that create new and attractive products, and civil engineers that build roads that create urban sprawl as just a few examples. Without this group of people there would be no production of a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The means is just the technological advancement of today s world. Woodhouse uses examples of means such as research, marketing, and technology in general. This is a crucial point in consumerism because without the means then the agents wouldn t have the capability to mass produce items. This nonhuman technology also gives agents a certain level of calculability, and predictably, unprecedented to others. Woodhouse also explains that without sites then businesses and governments wouldn t have anywhere to test their ideas or develop new ideas. Fast food restaurants, military research and development, and college universities are all places of research. College universities are a good example because they get government grant money to test new theories and technologies. If anything should prove successful during research though it is almost guaranteed that it will be mass produced and used to help stimulate the economy creating tax ... • 3. A Discussion of the Social Effects of Biotechnology Essay A Discussion of the Social Effects of Biotechnology The world of work in agriculture is in a process of rapid change. While change is by no means alien to agriculture, something new has entered the arena which promises and/or threatens to fundamentally alter agricultural practices across the globe. Biotechnology has already begun to be implemented resulting in what may be important shifts in not only agricultural production, but indeed changes in the very makeup of agricultural products themselves. This promises to pose serious challenges and/or opportunities to farmers across the globe. However, this may of course depend where it is particular farmers stand in relation to the power and socio economic relations surrounding ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By 2000, robotics, will increase planting and harvesting efficiency. But the biggest change is the revolution of genetic engineering. Already in hundreds of trials, gene manipulation in plants has created variations able to withstand lethal environmental conditions and pestilence. Creating new animal replicants is so near on the horizon, you can t get a clear missile shot at it. Moreover, although the United States pioneered the biotech, other countries are hot on our heels. The implication of this race is simply put by OTA s Michael Phillips: We ve been leaders in basic research, but adapting and getting it to industry and marketplace has proved a stumbling block. And whoever gets to market first, wins. (Omni, New York, Jan 1993) Keehn remarks: The proponent s of today s genetic engineering movement say that they have brought [Rachel] Carson s vision to life, creating in their laboratories a cornucopia of fruits, vegetables and grains whose genetic traits have been altered, heralding the birth of a brave new world for agriculture. Consider this advertisement for Monsanto, and early plug for their biotechnology program. The ad focuses on a single stock of corn, growing in a desert. Underneath appears this message: Will it take a miracle to feed the world? The implication? ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the banana tree there was a monkey with an object in its hand. Piggy was struggling to see what the object was, but Ralph had to get a closer look to figure out what it was. As Ralph had got closer to the banana tree he noticed the object was reflecting light. He whispered to Piggy I think it s your glasses. The monkey became startled and ran off, the boys followed. During the chase to retrieve the glasses the monkey disappeared into a hollow area. It turned out to be a magical cave. • 5. Sandwich Bikes In the world of home exercise equipment, few pieces have been around as long as the exercise bike. Although exercise bikes (fitness bikes, studio bikes) received a bad rap for a number of years, being used as clothes hangers, etc., the new versions are sleek, silent, and easy to use. There are two basic types of bikes, the upright and the recumbent. An upright is what most people think of when they think of fitness bikes. The upright is closest to a regular bike, narrow saddle, pedals below the rider, handle bars out front. On the other hand, a recumbent exercise bike has a wider seat with a small back support. The pedals are out front, and the rider is in a reclined position. Both bikes have good and bad points as we shall see. The traditional setup of an upright bike allows the rider to more closely simulate an actual bike ride than possible with a recumbent. The rider is able to stand, assume a race crouch, or a neutral position. Trouble is, if the rider has any sort of back problems, especially lower back, an upright can irritate the condition leading to worse problems. An upright is more difficult to get on and off of because of a higher proximity to the ground. This can be problematic for older or overweight people. An upright takes up less room than a recumbent. You may want to keep this in mind if your exercise area is on the small side. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 6. Totalitarian Autocracy First of all, Friedrich and Brzezinski (1965) distinguish between traditional autocracy and ancient tyranny, and in the other hand, totalitarian dictatorship. In their view, totalitarian regimes exemplified by communist and fascist dictatorships are qualitatively different from traditional autocracy in that they harness modern means of communication and a mass party in systematic effort to exert control over the subject population, primarily for ideological purposes. In all autocratic regimes, the ruler is not accountable to anyone else for what he does and the one who make the decisions. Totalitarianism is an autocracy based upon modern technology and mass legitimation. The Soviet Union and its East European satellites, Nazi Germany and fascist Italy, Mao s China and Castro s Cuba are given as examples of totalitarian regimes. According to F B, totalitarian systems have 6 traits: 1 An ideology that is the declared enemy of religion, or which seeks to subsume religion within itself, turning churches and clergy into collaborators of the regime; 2 A single mass party, typically led by one man, the dictator, consisting a relatively small percentage of total population (up to 10 percent) which acts as a political vanguard, infusing all parts of society and state with official doctrine; 3 A system of physical and psychological terror extending over the entire nation, including essential parts of the state such as the military, secret police, bureaucracy and the cadres; 5 ... • 7. Territorial Expansion DBQ Manifest destiny and territorial expansion divided the United States from 1830 to 1860 through views on Texas, disagreements regarding whether or not it was justifiable to travel west for land, and how to handle the war that may have arisen as a result of territorial expansion. There was much division among Americans regarding what should be done with Texas. Some argued that it should join the other states so that there could be peace between them and Texas (Document F) and that it would make the slaves more comfortable by providing them with more land and support (Document C.) However, others argued that annexing Texas would create a dangerous imbalance of slave and free states. In Document B, Reverend William Ellery Channing claimed that By annexing Texas, we shall not only create [slavery] where it does not exist, but breathe new life into it, where its end seemed to be near. In other words, by including Texas as a free state, slavery would only continue to spread for a longer amount of time than it would have originally. This would, of course, extend the entire conflict of whether or not slavery was just. This controversy over Texas greatly divided the states amongst themselves. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One example of this belief can be seen in Document E, when Senator Thoman Corwin of Ohio excitedly prompted Americans to claim the Bay of San Francisco for it is the best harbor on the Pacific! Those who believed this viewed westward expansion as a right given by their God (making it completely natural), and that it should be automatically provided to them because of that. However, some others believed that taking this land was entirely uncalled for. Many other people viewed that coming in on Mexican land would be wronging [the natives] (Document H.) • 9. Detroit Is Not A Blank Canvas Some people believe that Detroit is comparable to a blank canvas. A place where an opportunity is lurking right around the corner. They imagine it as a deserted place, in which a businessman can create anything they dream of. However, the harsh reality is, Detroit is not a blank canvas. It has been splattered with an era of prominence, scribbled on with the invention of the automobile, and engraved with a history of racism and corruption. Although much of Detroit s glory has been stripped away, there are still people who exist in the city s remnants. Actual people, with actual families, actual homes, and actual lives. There are many factors to point blame at when considering Detroit s failure. A city that was dependent on manufacturing cars was bound to flounder when the factories moved elsewhere. Tensions among races became prevalent throughout the city, ending with whites moving into the suburbs. Corruption consumed the city s government, and the leaders led the city into the ground. The aftermath of these actions have been thrown upon the people who stayed in the city of Detroit. These people are living in unsafe conditions due to the fact crime rates are so high, and the police presence is so scarce. The children are apart of a failing education system; the foundation of the buildings aren t up to public health code, they have limited resources, and a lack of teachers willing to work. When talking about the future of Detroit, where does one see the future for these people? Why is there a new hockey arena being built, while the deteriorating schools are being left to fall apart? Large sums of money are being poured into the city s assets, but the investors are forgetting the most important asset of Detroit, it s people. • 10. Family Religious History Lixin Guo PHIL 110 ADF Family Religious History I grew up with my maternal grandparents in China. From an early age, I was taught the notion of filial piety, paying respect to elderly members while making concessions to the younger members. It plays a central role in my family as well as the families in which my grandparents came from. My grandmother is born in a scholarly family heavily influenced by teachings of Confucianism. Strict rules apply to how children should behave to show respect to adults. For instance, children are not allowed to eat before adults begin eating, which exemplifies the belief that parents are authoritative over children. Unlike her parents, my grandmother is not keen on being an authoritative figure. She believes that a mutually respectful relationship with everyone regardless of age is the key to a harmonious family. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Making sacrifices means more of a duty to preserve my cultural identity than a religious experience. My grandfather, on the other hand, is from a poor, rural family. Although his family did not enforce a harsh discipline which is derived from the notion of filial piety, he is the most pious devotee to traditional practices in my family and sees filial piety as an obligation. It is his way of showing reverence to his mother, who changed his course of life. Despite the meager income, my great grandmother insisted on him to complete his college education so that he could find work that allows him to escape poverty. He feels heavily indebted to ... • 13. The Atomic Bomb Of World War II The atom bomb was no Great Decision. It was merely another powerful weapon in the arsenal of righteousness said Harry S. Truman. The atomic bomb is considered a weapon of mass destruction because of the insurmountable damage and causalities such attack can cause. The United States resorted to the creation of such incredible weapon as a means to annihilate or alter the Axis powers. However, this all began due to the September 1, 1939, German attack to Poland and the Pearl Harbor bombings by Japan. These actions by the Axis powers would result in one of the deadliest global wars in human history. World War II involved the vast majority of the world s nations. An estimated 50 million to 85 million died in the events that occurred in World War II. The origin and development of the atomic bomb during World War II changed forever the direction of the war and posed the United States as a champion in military strategies; this endeavor also known as the Manhattan Project served as catalyst in WWII. During this time, the world s most intelligent scientists discovered that German physicists were learning to produce a bomb that could cause immense destruction. The fear of such a bomb led scientists Albert Einstein and Enrico Fermi to inform President Franklin D. Roosevelt of Germany s plans. There are different tasks generally for Combat Engineers that go with the skills taught including: building and constructing bridges, minefield clearance and detonation, and any other task requiring the specialized skills, (www.wood.army.mil/sapper). Sappers sometimes work with other branches to clear a route of obstacles and rivers for a convoy to pass or ground troops to pass. Detecting the mines will be done visually as well as with detectors. (Giles) Plainly, when people hear an accent, subconsciously they connect it with their previous experiences involving people with that accent. Because the British are often known for their history of wealth, power, monarchies, and luxurious culture, the average viewer of the documentary will subconsciously and inherently connect the women s British accent to wealth and authority. At this point in the film, upon hearing her voice the viewer will have a broad understanding of what the documentary is about before even being presented the formal narration of Johnson s thesis. The spying concept, the luxurious environment, and the audio of refined music and voice all come together as elements that make this scene extensively persuasive. • 19. The Reflection Of Living With Jesus Christ In The World While living and serving in a Chiang Mai prison in Thailand, I met with a radical Muslim man named, Ali, who was serving a life sentence in the Thai prison because, he murdered a Thai woman. As growing up in Pakistan, it is very challenging to love those who persecute and hate you. Initially, he didn t want to do anything with Christianity. But after meeting him for at least six months, with difficult conversations, he decided to accept Jesus Christ as his personal savior. From that point on, I had to leave all my hard feelings behind and accept him as a part of the body of Christ and take care of him. Honestly, I had to listen him cry and suffer in the Thai prison. But in the midst of all that suffering, I had to stand right beside him, fight for his basic rights in the Thai judicial system, communicate with the Pakistani embassy in Bangkok, Thailand, and wrap my arms around him. Today, we will learn together from the passage 1 Corinthians 12:12 27 in which Paul uses a metaphor of a body to describe diversity and unity in the body of Christ and its functions and how do we need to take care of those who are facing extreme persecution. Slide 2 Using metaphors were and still are pretty common in the Middle Eastern culture to obtain deeper understanding of a phenomenon. In the Old Testament, the term body mostly refers to the physical body. Salvador shows his love for his wife while she is sick. She asked Salvador to check her messages at the office, he told her that the office wanted her to come in person to sign (Fuentes 451). We can note from this that during this time period medicine wasn t very advanced. When someone needed highly advanced medicine, it was very expensive and rare to get. A shopkeeper tells Salvador that Life en Espanol hadn t arrived yet (Fuentes 452). Carlos Fuentes tells us this because he wants us to get the feel for the setting of the story. This also can stereotype that the life in Mexico can prove to be economically difficult. The story is focused in the mid 1950s during political corruptness. The setting is located in Mexico City, Mexico. Carlos Fuentes expresses this because he wants us to get the feel for the setting of the story. This also can stereotype that the life in Spanish can be economical hard. A Teacher s Assistant For An Afterschool Program Essay As a teacher s assistant for an afterschool program called Good Grades Academy, I decided to the vocabulary as an extension of the classroom teacher s comprehension unit. My vocabulary game was based on a lesson involving literary elements for fifth grade students. I worked with a fifth grade student named Bartek who is eleven years old. His strengths lie in his ability to figure out challenging math problems, but he struggles in the areas of reading and comprehension. Bartek decoding skills are on par with his grade level, but his comprehension skills are representative of a third or fourth grade level. He cannot recall important information in the text and his writing responses are unrelated to the text. In addition, Bartek often lacks motivation and has difficulty completing his work. He cannot sit still and disturbs the other students working in the classroom. When asked to complete work related tasks he states that it is too difficult and is inattentive when receiving instruction. I decided to play the vocabulary game with him because it would be a fun and interactive way to help him learn words. After the students in the afterschool program finish assigned work they are allotted time for fun activities, so I used this opportunity to implement the vocabulary game. The purpose of my game was to clarify literary elements that Bartek was working on understanding. This is a line from a poem written by William Ernest Henley. Self control is where you control your own fate and you guide your own soul, Henley expressed this through that quote. His idea can be applied to many things, one being the story of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. In the story, the characters are big believers in fate where courses of events are beyond their control. Caught in his own rage, Romeo pulls out his sword, fights, and kills Tybalt (3.1). Once again, Romeo displays lack of self control. This fight leads to an even bigger reason for conflict in Juliet and Romeo s marriage, hence the chain of events leading up to Romeo s death. He could have easily took the time to evaluate the situation and realize that he didn t need to justify his manliness, not to mention killing someone. The ultimate example of Romeo s lack of self control is when he finds out that Juliet is dead . From dramatic irony, we know that Juliet wasn t really dead. • 35. I Appreciate Barbour s Praiseworthy And Toilsome Effort III. Critique First of all, I appreciate Barbour s praiseworthy and toilsome effort to put theology and science in a meaningful and fruitful dialogue, by seriously taking account of both continuities and discontinuities between scientific metaphors and religious metaphors. For Barbour, because both disciplines have continuities and discontinuities they can contribute to our more comprehensive understanding of the reality of our experiences in the world through their metaphorical relationship. While scientific models, theories, and paradigms are focused on the explanation of natural phenomena, the religious counterparts are more focused on the human experience of their natural/social environments and evoking moral and attitudinal responses, while religious affirmations do not exclude truth claims like the scientific claims do. Also, like religion, scientists also hold on to their traditions in their observation and interpretation of natural phenomena; hence, they are not neutral. In that sense, I agree with Barbour that science and religion bear significant similitude, while they can complement each other in our holistic understanding of our world. It seems to me that this is well supported by Peacocke s concept of ontological monism. In our evolutionary understanding of the world, we could contend with Peacocke that All concrete particulars in the world including human beings with all of their properties are constituted only of fundamental physical ... The bill entitled the Economic Security Bill and was the starting point for Social security. (ssa.gov) Social Security was enacted as part of the New Deal. Its purpose was to provide a safety net for the elderly and their direct survivors, as well, temporary unemployment benefits. The funding was a compulsory taxation of the employed workforce in shared responsibility with the employers (Hyman 2010 p. 312). The legislation was clear on the system design during the time of creation. Pensions were funded through tax payrolls, a separate tax for health insurance and finally the tax paid by the employers was allocated to unemployment benefits. The term public finance as defined is the spending by the government and methods required to pay for spending (investorwords.com). Specifically, taxation and borrowing and the affect they have on the overall budget. Social Security in the early years was considered a pension system of annuity monthly payments. In1940, the ratio of workers to beneficiaries was 159.4. The average beneficiary had 159 individuals working to fund their annuity payments. In 2010 that number has depleted to 2.9 or for every retiree, we have 2.9 employed individuals paying for 1 retiree or disabled individual (ssa.gov). The social security system was not originally set up to be good deal for current and future workers (Mariger, 1999). As shown by the current ratio, Social ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. US Dollar Benefits A U.S. dollar is an IOU from the Federal Reserve Bank. It s a promissory note that doesn t actually promise anything. It s not backed by gold or silver. This small quote can accurately describe the current American economical situation. It is bluntly states that the U.S dollar is worth only the paper it is printed on. In contrast to other countries who back their money with their current gold reserves. But the quote also references a different period of time in the history of the U.S. the time in which we did back our money with gold or going back even farther backing it with silver. But when one looks back upon the history of the world the usage of silver to back a nation s currency gave way to countries using gold to back their currency. ... Which when limited can make depressions worse by limiting the amount of money that can be put back into the economy. In addition the price of gold is dependent on the global prices and what other countries store of gold amount up to. In addition if any other countries are starting to buy large amount of gold and if they are owning it or trading it with other nations. With the chances of gold fluctuating in price, due to the amount of gold there is in the world, what countries hold the lion s share of gold, and finally what is the current state of the world. In addition the gold standard is mainly used in capitalistic economy. This is due to countries that follow the ideals of communism do not believe in people making money but instead believe in the people supporting each other. But that could also harm the countries that follow the gold standard because those communist countries hold onto their gold instead of selling it or giving the gold to a different country. • 41. The Negative Effects Of Oil Drilling As polar ice in the Arctic region melts, there are many implications associated with it. The melting ice opens up sea lanes, providing access to priceless natural resources, such as the estimated 90 billion barrels of the world s undiscovered oil (Karaim 336). For the United States, this is a great opportunity. Access to these energy reserves would open up expansion of the oil industry, which advocates of oil drilling say will lead to extensive economic development (Karaim 335) in northern Alaska and the rest of the Arctic region. However, scientists caution that an increase in oil drilling will have destructive effects on the environment. Increased greenhouse gas pollution from oil drilling facilitate global warming, which will melt even more polar ice, absorbing more sunlight and harming vivid Arctic ecosystems. The higher risk for oil spills will harm marine wildlife, which translates to harming the indigenous Arctic peoples. Their diets will be altered, new diseases will be introduced, and the changing of the Arctic land will restrict their rich cultural traditions and lifestyles. Although oil drilling will facilitate economic development in the Arctic, it should not be continued because its implementation is not sustainable for the environment, nor does it improve the lifestyles of the indigenous Arctic peoples. One concern that scientists have regarding oil drilling in the Arctic is the perpetuation of climate change that comes along with it. Expansion of the oil ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 43. Conformity In Walt Disney s Mickey Mouse Club The Mickey Mouse Club is a television show that was created by Walt Disney and was produced by Walt Disney Productions. The show was first aired by ABC from 1955 to 1960 and intermittently aired from 1950 to 1996. The Mickey Mouse Club was a variety show for children that included a carton, music and talent, a news segment and even a comedy segment. The cast members were called Mouseketeers. Of the Mouseketeers, the teenage boys and girls faced the most challenges. While teens in the 1950 s had a great understanding of conformity in terms of appearances and popularity, it was the Mickey Mouse Club that reinforced conformity and an obsession with appearances. In the 1950s, on shows like the Mickey Mouse Club, girls were defined by their bodies and had to strive to meet strict standards of beauty. Guests on the show, even the youngest of performers always had perfectly curled hair and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By making gender role messages ever present and stressing conformity and acceptance through appearance and behavior, The Mickey Mouse Club strengthened white, middle class values as well as a sense of security in America s youth. The Mickey Mouse Club attempted to suggest that security and happiness were attainable, providing a comforting picture in world where the reality was much more in flux. Being attractive and well mannered was a small but important part of growing up in a Cold War society dominated by visions of an ideal white, middle class life. • 45. Sexism And Hostile Sexism Sexism, is a prejudice plain and simple. One of the earliest forms of violence directed toward women was the Witch Hunt Trials of the Middle Ages. Bishops debated whether a woman was really human at all. If her nose were too long, she had red hair, a humped back, or if she was exceptionally beautiful, she was thought to be a witch and was burned at the stake. There was an estimated nine million women burned during the Witch Trials. During the Women s Liberation Movement in the 1960 s, feminist theorists explained that oppression of women was widespread in nearly all human society, and spoke of sexism instead of male chauvinism. Male chauvinists were usually individual men who expressed the belief that they were superior to women (Napikoski). By the mid 20th century sexism was established and began to appear in advertising. Between the 1970 s and 1990 s women began to feel more equal to men until the 1980 s where they were portrayed as sex symbols on national television (The Origin and History of SEXISM). There are two main types of sexism, benevolent and hostile, and their definitions are opposite from one another. Hostile sexism is what most people perceive as sexism today as it seems sexism is occurring more and more often and is, notably, more vulgar. It is the notion that women are inferior or not as worthy; a belief that males are intrinsically superior. For many years women have been degraded and looked down upon with the idea that their place is in the kitchen with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It was then that Colin offered her something she had not expected. Though you may not have any obvious health problems, there are still many ways that people, especially ladies, can be afflicted. Tiredness can be an affliction, one that needs to be loosened like a knot blocking the proper flow of energy.
