Session Information S-152 Key Presenter: David Peter, Director, CTL Vincennes University Session Format: Forum Session Title: Frontline Faculty Development Technology Tools Track: Emerging and Future Educational Technology Date and Time: Monday, Oct 20, 2008 (4:30 PM - 5:30 PM) Scheduled Location: 150 B, Lower Level
What impact do Web 2.0 technologies have on faculty development? Harnessing these technologies may be one challenge. From the perspective of the CTL, the use of blogs, wikis, podcasts, and social bookmarking has the potential to radically transform the landscape of professional development. Educators involved in teaching, learning, and faculty development discuss real-world examples of these technologies and see their uses in teaching, learning, and faculty development.

Role and use and integration of technology Compare and contrast views of and uses for technology Define or list Web 2.0 technologies Social Collaborative Transparent Networking
Compare and contrast views of and uses for technology
Views of and uses for technology Institutional, teaching (instruction), learning (learner) Instruction paradigm versus learning paradigm Role of technology versus content versus intended use
Define or list Web 2.0 technologies
Web 2.0 technologies Social technologies - creating, developing, sustaining communities Networking technologies - providing connections to shared interests Collaborative technologies - providing platform for shared space, creating focused deliverables Transparent technologies - no interference in daily, typical life, extension of normalcy
What impact do Web 2.0 technologies have on faculty development?
Why use technology? To improve processes (uniformity and standardization) To develop skills (exposure and awareness) To MEET the students’ expectations and, To IMPROVE THE QUALITY of instruction, teaching, and learning
How can technology develop faculty? Provide ‘just-in-time’ training Focus on breadth and depth (as needed or required) Demonstrate PEDAGOGICALLY appropriate uses of technology Infuse technology into the classroom through modeling
What impact does Web 2.0 have on faculty development? Overview of professional/faculty development Focused, timely Topical development Technology and faculty development - key elements for success
Advantages/strengths of Web 2.0 Role of use in teaching and learning Ubiquitous, pervasive, mobile, flexible, social, scalable Mimics student uses of technology, student perceptions of role of technology and student expectations Almost commonplace for students, shifting to faculty
Multiple modalities of delivery part of technology Audio Video Multimedia Print Interactive Simulations
Flexible delivery enhanced by technology Just-in-time (on demand) Individual focus (individualized) Small group focus, or (focus on process) Large group focus (general focus on process)
Next Steps
The greatest barrier or impediment to faculty development is TIME … time available for attending a 2 hour workshop, once a month, for one semester. We need to rethink TIME in faculty development.
Uses of technology Informational Pedagogically based, classroom strategies Teaching resources Just-in-time delivery Review
Impact of technology on faculty development Blogs Wikis Podcasts Social bookmarking
Focus With blogs, wikis, and podcasts Provide focused training Provide topical training Provide just-in-time training Provide refresher/sustainment training New technologies match new demands on faculty
Concluding Thoughts Regardless of the size of the impact, impact is made EVEN if only ONE faculty member is reached … the new technologies will ENCOURAGE faculty to return … we should PROVIDE professional development for ALL faculty, at ALL times, and at ALL locations … and Web 2.0 allows us to do this
