The webinar discussed challenges and opportunities for digital pedagogy and technology-enabled teaching and learning. Key challenges for the upcoming term include the digital divide disadvantaging learners without devices/connectivity, engagement of online learners, and delivering high quality instruction. Responding to these challenges requires consolidating tools/channels, maintaining learner engagement, and staff CPD. Moving forward, focus areas include accessibility of online content, mixed synchronous/asynchronous methods, single sign-on systems, and access to quality interactive content. Professional development is needed to support staff digital capabilities while identifying and assisting digitally excluded learners.

The webinar took place on June 24th with over 110 delegates from across the UK attending. Delegates discussed emerging best practices for supporting curriculum and business support staff needs as they change. Challenges included concerns about learners' ability and experience with online learning. Maintaining relationships with learners and supporting peer relationships was also discussed. Most delegates reported an increase in workload since lockdown began, though many felt more productive. Benefits included improved communication and collaboration through technology. Staff embraced new technology and organizations responded flexibly to the pandemic. When asked how their experience could be improved, delegates requested more CPD and opportunities for online networking and sharing of best practices across their colleges.

A webinar was held on June 15th with over 120 delegates and 5 learners discussing emerging best practices for online learning. Key topics included ensuring lessons are short and include peer collaboration to prevent online fatigue, providing all learners access to learning materials, technology, and spaces, and helping learners engage with online and independent learning since it differs from in-person classes. Special consideration was given to September starters who will not know their tutors or peers and require crucial induction support, as well as addressing challenges with practical work and providing timely feedback to learners.

There is no one right way to use technology to underpin the curriculum. The range of possibilities can make it difficult for practitioners to know where to start, but as universities and colleges adapt to the new normal of teaching in hybrid environments support is needed to ‘get it right.’ There will be challenges, but you can overcome these if time and resources are directed at the right things. There are lots of misunderstandings about what it means to use technology to support teaching, learning and assessment. Academic staff need to approach the challenge with an awareness of those misconceptions as well as with a critical and creative mindset. This webinar will showcase examples of how universities and colleges are currently adapting to provide flexible approaches to learning using digital. The focus will be on what lessons we have learned over the last six months and how we can make online learning a transformative experience for learners, rather than a deficit model.

Presentation slides from our first learning and teaching reimagined series, which focused on how student needs are changing. The rapid move to online learning brought about by COVID-19 has caused profound changes to higher education and the student experience. But how much do we really know about the needs of our students? Using a Microsoft Teams Group site to collaboratively support staff digital capabilities at the University of Brighton. The site aimed to share information, capture good practices, and answer questions to support flexible, inclusive, and multimodal digital learning. Over 330 members from various departments used the site, mostly asking questions about technology which led to broader pedagogical discussions. Analytics showed high engagement from July to November 2020 during remote teaching. The site successfully reduced pressures on technical support staff and hopes to collect case studies of good digital teaching practices. Evaluations will assess the site's role in fostering an online community of support.

Speakers: Reza Mosavian, student experience product owner, Tribal Ken Barrett, student experience product manager, Tribal Students want more choice and flexibility, but technology moves so quickly. What can institutions do to offer the best possible student experience through technology whilst remaining relevant and cost-effective? Rather than investing in ‘the latest innovation’, a student engagement platform that continuously updates with the latest technology (such as voice activation digital assistants or AI) means you don’t have to back a single tool that could become outdated within a couple of years. This interactive workshop discusses the links between students’ digital expectations vs reality and what universities and colleges are doing about it. There will be contributions from student experience directors, sharing their experience of creating the conditions necessary to enrich the digital lives of students through open, integrated and future-proof technologies. Delivering RARPA: a college-wide digital approach

Tasked with developing a digital solution that learners could own, that was intuitive for support staff to manage and provided managers with instant access to insightful data, the Wiltshire College learning technologies team settled on an open source solution which is already delivering positive results since being been introduced across the college. This session will demonstrate the Wiltshire College RARPA system from the perspective of each group of users; the students managing their own progress, the staff using the system to support their learners and the managers now with a college-wide visibility of progress. In addition the developers will also explain how all of this was achieved, and their ideas for the future.

In recent months universities have rapidly implemented significant and often unplanned changes to the ways in which education is delivered.
