Although she had been active in high school—serving as treasurer for the student council and playing on the lacrosse team—she had never done any public speaking. Now that she was in her second semester, she wanted to get the required course out of the way, so she had enrolled in Public Speaking 101. The class seemed to be going quite well. She felt fairly confident about her speaking abilities; she had received two As and one B on her speeches so far. The final speech, however, would be her most challenging. It was a persuasive speech, and she decided that she would speak on the dangers of drinking and driving. The topic was a personal one for Camille because she would talk about her Uncle Jake, a wonderful man who had died last year in an accident with a drunk driver. As she prepared for the speech, she thought that she would blend both emotion and logic into her presentation. Camille also thought that she would have to identify both sides of the drinking issue—the desire to let loose and the need to be responsible. On the day of her speech, Camille took several deep breaths before the class started; it was a strategy that had worked before her previous speeches. As she approached the lectern, she could feel the butterflies well up in her stomach. She reminded herself about the topic and its personal meaning. So, as planned, she began with a short story about her favorite time with Uncle Jake—the time they went to Philadelphia to see the Liberty Bell. Camille then talked about the night—two weeks after her trip—that her uncle died; he was driving home from his daughter’s soccer game, and a drunk driver slammed his car from behind, forcing Jake to the embankment. His car then slid into a pond where he drowned. The room was silent as Camille finished the story. She proceeded to identify why she was speaking on the topic. She told the group that considering their classroom was filled with people under the age of 25, it was important that they understand how fragile life is. Her words resonated with the group. For the next five minutes, Camille mentioned her Uncle Jake several times as she repeated the importance of not drinking and getting behind the wheel of a car. Camille felt relieved as she finished her speech. She thought that she had done a decent job with her assignment, and she also felt that it helped her to be able to talk about her uncle again. After class, several of Camille’s classmates came up and congratulated her. Many of them posted words of sympathy on her Facebook page. They told her that it took a lot of guts to talk about such a personal subject in front of so many people. They help us account for the past, make sense of the present and dream of the future. Culture can be, and is, used as a means of social control. More effective than any army is a shared conception that the way things are is the way things should be. The powers-that-be don’t remain in power by convincing us that they are the answer, but rather that there is no other solution. But culture can be, and is, used as a means of resistance, a place to formulate other solutions. In order to strive for change, you have to first imagine it, and culture is the repository of imagination. ~Stephen Duncombe It is the common failing of totalitarian regimes that they cannot really understand the nature of our democracy. They mistake dissent for disloyalty. They mistake restlessness for a rejection of policy. They mistake a few committees for a country. They misjudge individual speeches for public policy. ~Lyndon Baines Johnson In his introduction to the Cultural Resistance Reader, Stephen Duncombe reluctantly defines “cultural resistance” as “culture that is used, consciously or unconsciously, effectively or not, to resist and /or change the dominant political, economic, and/or social structure” (5). He goes on to raise questions about how cultural resistance works, whether or not it can also be thought of as political resistance, and eventually whether or not cultural resistance is even possible. We’ll spend the next segment of WRT 105 entertaining these ideas; exploring, analyzing, questioning, critiquing and arguing about how and why (and if) culture is being used to resist or challenge the dominant ideologies, policies, and practices of the contemporary American landscape. During that time we’ll grapple with difficult questions: How is culture being used to demonstrate dissatisfaction with the status quo, with the dominant American culture? What are the cultural artifacts associated with resistance and dissent? This assignment will address two issues: · Building an argument using convincing textual evidence · Writing in order to persuade an unsympathetic argument THE ASSIGNMENT : Chapter 5 in Rereading America addresses the history and present realities of the tensions that have surrounded, and still surround, racial and ethnic differences in the United States. We can broaden the range of this topic to include areas of class, sexual orientation, religion, gender, and political affiliation, at the least. Each of these categories, including race, are populated by groups we could call “others”—groups that both are seen by the majority culture as being somehow “outside” and are viewed by the majority culture with a degree of suspicion. In a four-and-a-half to five page, double-spaced, 12-point typeface essay, argue for how some of the ideas in TWO of the essays in chapter 5 of Rereading America apply to ONE of these groups of “others” of your choosing. Define the group carefully. Write to an audience who would doubt the validity of your topic, the book’s texts, and your argument. If you choose to write about an “other” that is defined by race or ethnicity, be specific in naming this group (e.g., Korean, or mixed-race, or Persian). For example, I might take the arguments in Harris and Carbado’s essay and apply them to similar thought patterns I see in Orange County about people whom the majority culture in the OC might consider “others”—those out of the cultural mainstream. Perhaps I would select French people as my group of others. I could talk about how Orange Countians see French speaking people suspiciously—people who spend too much time thinking about food. This would be a fairly silly paper, but I could nonetheless choose this topic. IMPORTANT ADVICE : Read all four essays and the discussion board entries on the essays. 1. “Friends, Romans, Countrymen, lend me your ears!” So speaks Shakespeare’s Marc Anthony upon the murder of Julius Caesar. The role of public debate has changed very little over time. We have more avenues now, and a wider public to address, but the essential goal of persuading the audience to take a stand or action remains the same. This week you will discuss a public issue that is pertinent your own experience. It may be an issue with schools in your community, a health issue affecting you or someone you know, or an assessment of your political leadership. Watch the video Michael Sandal: The Lost Art of Democratic Debate . Identify a public issue in your community. Explain to the class your own position on the issue keeping in mind that public debate is a place for people who disagree try and find common ground. Your initial post should be at least 250 words in length. Support your claims with examples from required material(s) and/or other scholarly resources, and properly cite any references. Respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts by Day 7. Each response should be at least 125 words long. Consider ways citizens can reclaim public deliberations.
