• Psychoanalysis is a psychological theory comprehended in the
late 19th and early 20th centuries by Austrian neurologist
  Sigmund Freud.

• The Principal subject matter of psychoanalysis:
   • The assumption that there are unconscious mental
     processes
   • The recognition of the theory of resistance and repression
   • The appreciation of the importance of sexuality and the
     Oedipus complex
• Sigmund Freud believed the mind can be divided into two main parts: The
  unconscious and conscious mind.

• The conscious mind consists of everything that we are aware of. This is our
mental processing that we can think and talk about. A part of this includes our
memory, this is not always part of consciousness but can be retrieved at any
time and taken into our awareness. Freud called this ordinary memory the
  preconscious.

• The Unconscious mind is a body of feelings, thoughts, urges, and memories
that is not in our conscious awareness. Most subjects of the unconscious are
unacceptable or unpleasant, such as feelings of pain, anxiety, or conflict.
According to Freud, the unconscious endures to inspire our behaviour, even if
we are unaware of these underlying influences.
We thought about the unconscious mind and how in theatre and costume colours
can represent/ symbolise different emotions and messages to the audience. This
also relates to shared norms and semiotics. For example:
• Red= Danger, lust, desire. This can be as subtle as lipstick or as obvious as a tight
   red dress.
• Black = Mourning, death, evil. Villains often wear black.
• White = Purity, innocence, youth.

Subliminal messages are also used in performance to convey certain themes. For
example:
• Derren Brown’s (psychological illusionist) shows use subliminal messages very
heavily to manipulate the audience. This can be through objects, sound or
   symbols.
• In ‘The Wild Bride’ many objects were used to symbolise other things such as
the red paint on the Bride’s arms; this was instantly recognised by the audience
   to be blood.
• Carl Jung, was one of Freud's early pupils, but later disagreed with Freud's use of
  sexuality within his theories.

• Jung was the founder of analytical psychology.

• Many psychological concepts were first proposed by Jung, including the archetype, the
  collective unconscious and the complex

• The archetype is a model of a person, personality, or behaviour.

• The collective unconscious collective unconscious gathers and organizes, personal
experiences in a alike way with each member of a particular species.

• The Complex is an essential pattern of emotion, memories, perceptions in a persons
unconscious, this is based round a common theme, power.
Archetypes are very useful to those working behind the scenes in performance,
especially for costume design as they are perceptions that help to form a character.
Plays are usually made up of groups of archetypal characters which the audience can
relate to.
For example, women fall under the following archetypal roles:
• Prostitute
• Mother
• Damsel in distress
• Heroin (not very often)

As we discussed earlier, colours are usually assumed to certain archetypes. This brings
up the idea of stereotypes in society and how we all presume a person to look and act.

This can be a help or hindrance to a costume designer. You need to know when to be
obvious with your designs and run with the stereotype of a character or in some cases
you will need to go against the stereotype depending on the aims of the director.
