Lying Is A Common Social Phenomenon. In Any Social Context,
Lying is a common social phenomenon. In any social context, it presents itself as a factor to hijack
any interaction. From a young age, introductions to the ethics of lying are conducted. Arguments as
ancient as ancient as Greek philosophers often arise on whether lying in general is right or wrong
more specifically lying to children. A little liehere, a small one there, drizzle a bit of Santa Claus
into the mix, and one ends up with the bad recipe for incredulity and mistrust. It s that mistrust and
damage to credulity that is a snowball that continuously rolls down the hill, getting bigger and
doing more damage. There are generally two types of lies that are presented to children, ones that
destroy morals and ones that are perceived... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The parents themselves don t support their own child lying, but what does the child think about
the parent lying. As the child gets older, his or her moral evaluation of both lies and truth
becomes submersed in doubt. One does not know said child s evaluation without understanding
their developments. White lies, ones that prove to be harmless and trivial such as the Santa Lie,
are messages that confuse children altogether. Parents hope to teach morals such as lying is
always bad, but at the same time cross their fingers and act deceitfully in order to make life
easier. The child just ends up confused. Not all lies have negative consequences for the other
person, and not all truths have positive consequences for someone else (Carson 1988). The
delicate balance between a child s moral understanding is impossible to determine and predict,
but it does not stop people from trying to comprehend it. Lies tend to snowball and evolve,
making it easier to lie in the future. Before, the science of lying was a pseudo science full of
uncertainty, but recently studies came to light which supporting the theory that one lie makes
future lies easier. This digression of the moral code and increase of corruption are seen as a
numbing agent to the brain. In a study by Neil Garrett, 80 people were shown a jar full of pennies
and given different guidelines on the lies that were to say. Each guideline will determine if the lie
resulted in the individual receiving

Criminal Profiler s Role In Criminal Investigation
A criminal profiler s goal is to help investigators examine evidence from crime scenes and eye
witness reports not, to solve the crime for investigators.
Typically on television or in a movie, a scene opens with the camera slowly zooming in on a
gruesome crime scene. Then it widens to show a group of suited individuals with blue jackets that
say F.B.I. on the back. They are all pondering over a dead body or bodies. Upon discussion at the
crime scene they return to headquarters and share various photos and bagged evidence with a
criminal profiler. It is from here it all begins. The search. A criminal profiler is a professional that
studies behaviors and thoughts of criminals. They are responsible for evaluating the evidence and
coming ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They all give viewers some insight into what a criminal profiler does. It shows us that almost
100% of the time the profiler is correct. The profiler gives a clear image and description of the
offender. The police set forth on a manhunt to find, at the time, this imaginary person. All efforts
go towards it and by the end of the movie the killer or killers are caught. Reality is not that easy.
Even with criminal profiling there is no clear path leading to the offender at the end. The
criminal profiler s goal as mentioned in the beginning to help investigators examine evidence
from crime scenes and eye witness reports, not to solve the crime for investigators. To do so they
have developed methods to try to help investigators zero in on the suspect such as organized
/disorganized dichotomy and classification schemes. In terms of time, criminal profiling is a very
new field. When the field was first created there was virtually no official scientific input. As the
field expands psychologist and psychiatrist adjust and fine tune what methods have already been
established. The myth through television and movies is that law enforcement is almost
immediately supposed to know who the offender is and have them arrested. The reality is that
unless you are psychic or even the best profiler it is next to impossible to know who you are

Female Sterilization Essay
Sterilization was a racialized procedure because the procedure targeted minorities, more
specifically women of color. Female sterilization is an irreversible and controversial form of
fertility control that most often involves the surgical cutting or tubal ligation of a woman s
fallopian tubes (Ruiz Korrol, 2006). Sterilizationwas important for the eugenicsmovement and
sterilization of females helped eugenics move forward. Eugenics was intended to stop individuals
deemed unfit from reproducing in hopes of keeping the human population pure. Eugenics, like birth
control was a program for making working class families healthy, for improving the condition of
the country and it stood in contrast to the racialism of tropical medicine (Briggs,... Show more

A study done by Novak et al. displayed that a disproportionate number of Latinos were sterilized
between the years 1920 to 1945. The rates of sterilization after 1945 did not decrease but remained
just as high. The primary victims of sterilization were women of color and sterilization procedures
took place in abundance in the United States as well as Puerto Rico. In this essay, I will examine
women of colors experiences of forced sterilization in the U.S and Puerto and see how the
experiences compare.
In Puerto Rico: A People Challenging Colonialism, it was said that more than 35 percent of
Puerto Rican women of child bearing age had been sterilized. This statistic reporting the highest
rate of female sterilization in the world at that time. Between 1972 and 1973, sterilizations had
increased by 180% in hospitals in predominantly Puerto Rican neighborhoods. Population growth
in Puerto Rico was a concern for U.S government since 1930 and in 1937 the Puerto Rico
Legislature passed a bill that legalized sterilization. Until the mid 1960 s, sterilization was seen as
the only way to limit Puerto Rican family size. Given the islands overpopulation problem, it
seemed as if sterilization was the only option for Puerto

Analysis Of Forgiving My GuiltAndForgive My Guilt
Responsibility is an important quality that mature people possess. People make mistakes, but the
maturity level of a person is determined by whether or not the person takes responsibility for their
errors. The short story The Man Who Was Almost a Man by Richard Wright and the lyric poem
Forgive My Guiltby Robert Coffin both fixate on young boys who wrongly take the lives of
creatures with a weapon. The short storyand the lyric poem share a common theme regarding the
significance of early life experiences to the maturation process as seen in the way the main
characters react to their mistakes. Dave in The Man Who was Almost a Man runs away from
his problems while the narrator in Forgive My Guilt holds himself accountable for his action and
feels guilty. In the short story, The Man Who Was Almost a Man, Richard Wright uses colloquial
language to develop the theme. For instance, in the scene where Dave is accused of killing the
mule, the difference in speech used by Dave, a black sharecropper, and Jim Hawkins, his white
employer, is evident. Jim Hawkins uses a more formal language when talking to Dave: Well,
looks like you have you a mule, Dave (5). In stark contrast, Dave responds using a more informal
way of speaking: Ah swear fo Gawd, Ah didn t go t kill the mule, Mistah Hawkins (5). The speech
in the story shows the varying degrees of education of the characters in the story and depicts the
segregation in the South between whites and blacks. Dave is also a

The Effects of Drinking and Smoking While Pregnant Essay
The Effects of Drinking and Smoking While Pregnant
The most disgusting thing in this world in my opinion, is when a pregnant woman
drinks or smokes. Women who drink during their pregnancy don t know that alcohol
can fatally harm the unborn baby. Most of these women drink during their pregnancy
with out any knowledge of the consequences. An estimated 40,000 babies are born each
year in the United States with alcohol related birth defects. The actual figures may be
higher. (Poisoned in the womb, p.53) The baby can be born with a lot of different kinds
of birth defects. Women, who drink very heavily during their pregnancy, have babies
that are born with Fetus Alcohol Syndrome.

It is very hard to feed them. Their
brain development is very slow. Parents who were expected to have a laughing and
healthy baby, become disappointed. The difficulties to care for these babies lead to
neglect or abuse.
?Family stresses, including those related to alcohol abuse, may lead to abuse and
neglect and further add to the problems of the affected children.? (Poisoned in the womb,
p. 540) Parents get mentally frustrated and physically tired of taking care of the baby.
There are more fights and arguments going on in these families. The parents will turn to
alcohol to escape the problems of their world. The baby will be neglected and abused
and that will create even more problems for the baby and the parents. ?Children of
alcoholics are three times more likely to be expelled from school, or drop out, get in
trouble or attempt a suicide? (Poisoned in the womb, p.50)
?Fetus alcohol Syndrome is a life long impairment for the children effected. Early identification and
intervention can help to improve the overall functioning level of the child by maximizing strengths
and preventing social and emotional problems. Many of the affected children, perhaps most of the
affected children, however, are not receiving needed services at an early age.? (Poisoned in the
womb, p. 50)
Affected babies will need parents that would be kind, strong and will have enough
patience to take care of them. These

The Squad Of The 14u Team South Football Team
We had traveled in the minivan for 5 hours, for a group of 13 year old boys this trip felt like
eternity. However, our excitement kept us all jaunting to each other about silly middle school
shenanigans, who can dougie better, and how we were all going to murk this tryout. Johnny Evans,
Malik Chatman, Gavin Rose, Ronnie Fountain, and I were all selected to try out for the 14u Team
South football team. This team would represent all the best players in the southeast and clash them
against other regions best athletes. This would be a 3 day try out. After leaving Orlando, the van
had finally reached its destination. CoachRose jingled to the car Atlanta is the place to be, with
orange peaches and southern tea, we all stared at Gavin as his face turned as red as a Crayola.
We pulled into the lot of the hotel all participating athletes had been assigned right off of I 75.
We all unloaded the van of our luggage proceeded to the check in, Coach got the keys for room
325 and 326. I was so tired of riding in back of the van that I did not really care how the room
would look as long as I could put my bags down and fall right into the bed. Malik, Johnny and I
entered our room 326 to the right was with a bathroom sink, a mirror, and shower. On the left, a
mini kitchen with a stove, island table, and refrigerator. In front of us, there were two wooden
dressers pinned together with a television on top. Near the window, there was a small table with a
lamp as well as chair in the corner.

Ellis Island Essay
Ellis Island, which was an immigration station, opened in 1892. Ellis Island was a place where
Immigrants from all over Southern and Eastern Europe, Greece, Serbia and Hungary to name a few
came to have a chance at getting into America. Immigrants came to Ellis Island for many different
reasons such as war, drought, famine, religion, and political and economic oppression. Although
coming to Ellis Island was one step closer to freedom, the immigrants still had many more obstacles
to face. The immigrants had to face numerous medical inspections, and also legal inspections to

Out of these immigrants who were held for further inspection, 9 out 100 of them were kept for a
mental inspection. The immigrants were given tests to make sure they were mentally okay to
go into America, they had 3 attempts to pass the test, if failed 3 times, the immigrant would be
deported. One woman who was deported was asked the following question, how many feet does
a horse have . The woman was so confused by the question that she thought they were tricking
her, and was deported for not being able to answer this question. Different immigrants had a
different view about Ellis Island. Some saw it as a police station and others saw it as a palace.
One woman stated that there is one thing she would never forget about Ellis Island and that was
that while the immigrants waited in these long lines, they were given donuts and milk, the woman
believed that this was the nicest thing that the people of Ellis Island could have done for them.
Ellis Island had many hospitals for immigrants who didn t quite pass the health test, they had
disease hospitals that were built in 1911. There were so many sick immigrants though that the
hospitals were expanded twice within 9 years, this took up 1/3 of the island. Ellis Island was a
place many immigrants came in hopes of seeing the new world. Many of the immigrants were
faced with many obstacles, but nearly 80% of the immigrants who came to Ellis Island were let

George Orwell s Spying
George Orwell s writing describes an apocryphal world clutched in the vise of perpetual war and
captivity. Orwell s 1984 outlines a future where a person s privacy rights mattered less than
security by using telescreens that are used to invade one s secrecy. In today s world the NSA
(national security act) has an internet surveillanceprogram that spies on people just like Orwell s
society that used spying methods. The novel has a relevance toward our modern world through
the eyes of the NSA who spy on people through social media, cell phone histories, computer
histories, and webcams. Through this medium Orwell s novel is able to correspond to the NSA
based on the applicability of the confidentiality of a person.

Failure at the Yalta Conference The Yalta conference was a conference held by Franklin D.
Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, and Joseph Stalin in 1945, to discuss post world war Europe and
to divide the power of Germany among themselves. At this conference Franklin D. Roosevelt FDR
, would give the U.S.S.R power that would lead to them becoming a super power and thus creating
a catullus of events. The power FDR gave the U.S.S.R during the Yalta conferencehad a domino

After the U.S dropped the bomb on Japan the U.S.S.R started its plan to create the bomb too.
Not long after the U.S dropped the bomb the U.S.S.R created their first nuclear bomb, igniting
the nuclear arms race with the U.S and starting the cold war as told by the American Museum of
Natural History Initially, only the United States possessed atomic weapons, but in 1949 the
Soviet Union exploded an atomic and the arms race began. The U.S.S.R began its nuclear
project to create a nuclear bomb to compete with the United States and not fall behind them in
the cold war and to try and to become the superior power. The reason that the U.S.S.R felt the
need to compete with the United States because after the power they gained during the Yalta
conference they became a large super power and the United States was the only other country
big enough to compete with the Soviets. The Soviets wanted control of west Berlin so that they
could have all of eastern Europe so they blocked off all ways into west Berlin in a plan to not
only compete but try to run the United States out of west Berlin to try and get an upper hand in
the cold war and in the at the time possible war between the U.S.S.R and the United States. The

Outsourcing and the US Economy Essay
Outsourcing Don t Get Bangalored?
As the world has gotten smaller in terms of trade, outsourcing has become a hot topic in much
political and economic debate in the United States. An Associated Press Ipsos poll in May 2004,
found that 69 per cent of Americans thought that outsourcing hurts the US economy while only 17
per cent thought it helped . President Bush s chief economic advisor Greg Mankiw has stated
outsourcing...is something that we should realize is probably a plus for the economy in the long run

Is the public concern over outsourcing valid?
The most cited official projection outsourcing is by Forrester. It is estimated that outsourced US
jobs will grow from about 400,000 in 2004 to 3.3 million (recenty revised to 3.4 million) by
2015 which seems quite significant. But on a yearly basis this accounts for about 250,000 jobs
but in perspective the number is small compared to the total US employment of 137 million. It
actually only constituate less than 2 per cent of 15 million Americans who lose their jobs each
year . Goldman Sachs estimates that offshoring has accounted for 500,000 million lay offs in the
past three years. A study by Ashok Deo Bardhan and Cynthia A. Kroll at the University of
California, Berkeley indicates that up to 14 million Americans now work in occupations that are
at risk of being outsourced . Forrester also estimated that 300,000 US jobs have been outsourced.
While the Commerce Department 400,000 new jobs, which leaves a net result of 100,000 new US
jobs . In addition, an Economic Policy Institute in New York announced that 144,000 new jobs were
created in August 2004 . Summarizing the numbers, it seems that outsourcing will have a positive
effect on the overall US economy.

Religious Hypocrisy In Tartuffe And Candide
Religious Hypocrisy in Tartuffe and Candide Religion in society has often been a tough pill to
swallow for everyone. Dating back to the 17th and 18th century authors, like Moliere and
Voltaire, often express their views on social issues with an outstanding play. Tartuffe, Moliere s
play, and Candide, Voltaire s play, both deal with the issue of religion in society. Tartuffe is
written as a comedy in which satirizes religious hypocrisy. It was wrote it about the views of the
bourgeois class towards religion in France. Almost a century later, Voltaire writes Candide a
satirical tale which condemns the clergy s hypocrisy in 18th century Europe. Moliere creates the
character Tartuffe to show the readers the hypocrisy hidden within christian standards. In Act 3,

However, Clergy members chose not to follow their own rules. Voltaire express this hypocrisy by

philosophical views. Dr. Pangloss was hanged by the clergy, however, the clergy is not punished for

Comparing Henry Miller and Jack Kerouac Essay examples
Comparing Henry Miller and Jack Kerouac
I. Introduction
It has never been an uncommon thing for one to retreat to nature in an attempt to find one s self,
and somewhat clichГ© these days is the retreat to nature to find God. Hundreds of books, essays,
seminars, and retreats devote themselves to helping one understand how to find enlightenment and
healing through connecting with nature. It is a phenomenon that transcends religious boundaries
everyone, from Buddhists to Christian Mystics to Quakers, seems to think that the key (or, at least,
one of the keys) to enlightenment lies in nature. As one may suppose, this is not a new concept.
Throughout literary history, there is a distinct trend of authors praising the virtues of nature, ... Show

secret lies in making people believe. That the book was inadequate, faulty, bad, terrible, as they
said, was only natural. [He] was attempting at the start what a man of genius would have
undertaken at the end (ibid.) In 1923, Miller met and married June Mansfield after divorcing his
first wife. While this marriage proved to be faithless, he found in her inspiration. She
encouraged him to put his energy into writing, and the passion and madness of their marriage
further fuelled him ( Henry Miller 2). Eventually, problems with June drove him to Paris without
her (despite the fact that it was funded by her), where he spent many years writing what is now
considered to be the opuses of his repertoire ( Henry Miller 1). While in Paris, he wrote Tropic of
Cancer which is still his most famous work which, along with Tropic of Capricorn, chronicles
his life in Paris. Both books were banned in the United States, which spawned a thirty year
censorship debate that was eventually won by Miller ( Henry Miller 1). The publication of these

The Importance Of A Team For A Dysfunctional Team
This essay will discuss and evaluate what a team is and how a team can function successfully, it
will also explore the factors that cause a team to be effective or ineffective and the barriers
contributing to a dysfunctional team.
Teamwork is a basic but important part of nursing which preregistered nurses are expected to
become part of and will eventually perform some form of leadership. Effective teamwork and
leadership skills are necessary qualities for a nurse to develop and are important to ensure patient
safety (West, 2012).
The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) (2010) state that to work effectively as part of a
team you must work cooperatively and respect the skills, expertise and contributions of your
colleagues and you must be willing to share your skills and experience for the benefit of your
colleagues. This is important in the healthcare setting as patients rely on an efficient, well
motivated team to take care of them. Therefore, this essay will also discuss leadership,
discriminating between good and bad, and it will also consider the concept of followership.
Furthermore, team building and organisational behaviour will be considered using relevant theories
and methods.
A team is a basic functioning unit within an organisation and is defined as a group of people
organised to work independently and cooperatively, meeting the given requirements by achieving
the same goals and purpose (Heathfield, 2014). Frias Martinez et al (2004) supports this definition

Eduard Wirths As A Doctor
During World War II, death, experimentation, and being a Jewish person was a fear that all
people had to worry about in Nazi Germany from 1939 to 1945; particularly in concentration
camps. Eduard Wirths was both a hero and an anti hero towards his patients, depending on what
stance a person takes. Wirths was known to have a sympathetic side to him that was a saving
grace for many. However, the experimentation he allowed patients to suffer through in order to
gain success for his own research is what makes him a criminal Nazi doctor. As the lead SS
doctor for Auschwitz, Eduard Wirths main duty was to oversee all that went on within the
camps, and he approved work done by others such as Joseph Mengele. Eduard Wirths was a
dedicated party member, a competent physician, and a renowned Auschwitz enemy. Eduard
Wirths was a conscientious doctor with a confused set of morals that may have been a lot more
caring than an SS doctor should have been. Growing up, Eduard Wirths family was Catholic and

Responsibility In John Steinbeck s Cannery Row
Often times, individuals use the phrase set your priorities straight to indicate they need a
realignment on what is valued more. An individual s priorities vary, depending on one s values.
Some put their individual values before others ; while some give others priorities more value
than their own. Authors occasionally engrave this moral into their novels to leave an impact in
the reader s lives. John Steinbeck s Cannery Row tells a story of Mack and the boys, who want to

Similarities And Differences Between The New England And...
During the colonial era, England founded the Thirteen colonies. The New england colonial
region was established for religious freedom. The Southern colonial region settled to find gold
and earn profits. There were many differences and similarities in New England and the Southern
geography, economy, and culture. There are similarities and differences of the geography of
New England and Southern colonies. The South had mild, rainy winters and long hot humid
summers. This means, the South could grow many crops. According to A Virginia Plantation,
the south had lots of plantations with tobacco and corn (Doc 6). However, New England had
long cold winters and a short growing season. This means New England did not grow as many
crops as the South. Instead, many colonists had small farms for their family or community.
Therefore, the differences in geography helped to shape the development of the New England
and Southern regions. There were similarities and differences in the economy of New england
and the Southern colonies. New England colonies had small farms, lumberjacks, and
shipbuilders. The colonies were near the Atlantic Ocean to help with their jobs. The coast
helped the colonists trade. New England did not have slaves instead they used indentured
servants to help with labor. These servants in a passage to the New World and after about 7 years
they are given land and freedom. On the other hand, to make money in the South they would sell
slaves to make a profit. The slaves did most of the work on their plantations. The slaves would
do all of the work so their owners could make the money from the crops they grew. When they
were traveling on the ship to be sold the conditions were terrible. The ship was very crowded and
many of the slaves got sick. According to The Slave Flyer it states that they made sure the slaves
didn t have smallpox because they would be able to sell them for more money if they seemed to
be in good condition. They didn t care if they were not healthy they just wanted them to look
healthy (Doc 8). Many people came to the South only to find gold. They only cared about finding

The western part of the country has exhibited the criteria that has warranted water relocation
efforts. For a time, the water diversion efforts worked to serve the communities around it
appropriately. However, as the withdrawal of water has exceeded the supply and as climate change
has contributed to decreasing water supply, there are serious threats to the future of available water
in the western United States. One proposed solution involves diverting water from the Great Lakes
in Michigan to the southwest. The location of the Great Lakes, positioned between the United
States and Canada, leads to international considerations and a controversial problems regarding
international law. The lakes serve as a water source to both the Americans... Show more content on

Thus, there is a high demand for water. At present, Pennsylvania does not face the water shortages
that warrant water relocation, however, if surface and groundwater withdrawals increase it could
push Pennsylvania closer to considering installing more hydrological alterations and exacerbate the
problems that currently face the nation as a whole.
There is a clear demand for water in locations that do not naturally have an adequate supply. Water
diversion projects serve their purpose in providing water for individual consumers as well as for
irrigation and industry. However, as illustrated in this paper, there are severe consequences that
arise when disrupting the natural flow of water the ecosystem around it. To mitigate some of the
consequences national geographic has suggested restricting the construction of dams, providing
incentives for farming business to reduce the use of pesticides, establishing protected wetlands
areas, and regulating water withdrawal for human use (Freshwater Threats, 2016). It is important
that the solutions to reduce the negative effects of hydrological alterations are aimed at various
areas. Efforts should be aimed at reducing the demand for water by increasing efficiency in industry
and irrigation as well as increasing the efficiency of water delivery. Efforts should be aimed at the
careful planning, engineering, and construction of the hydrological alterations with special attention

Narrative Family Therapy Paper
According to Winek (2010) narrative family therapy has several interventions that are used.
Listening to the family and showing interested in getting to know the members of the family as
people and in making sure that the problem does not trick us into mistaking them for it (Metcalf,

questions can lead to separating person from problem , identifying preferred directions, and creating
alternative stories to support these directions. Externalization is a process of separating the person
from identifying with the problem. The person is not the problem; the problem is the problem.

A Summary On Corporate Governance
Like de Kluyver argued in his publish (A primer on Corporate Governance, 2009), there is a
presumption that, in making a business decision, the directors acted on an informed basis, in good
faith, and in the honest belief that the action was taken in the best interest of the corporation.
However, even though the bar has been set, the definition of best interest of the corporation is open
for every business directors to interpret. In the case of Enron, the rule had been bent so hard that it
finally broke. The company was originally established as an energy provider in the US. In 1970s,
the CEO of Enron seized the chance of US energy market deregulation and navigated the company

There were specific internal control protocols and external audit agreements designed to prevent

In terms of internal control failing, first of all, the malfunction of the board of directors would be

The Importance Of Prosocial Behavior
Humans are inherently social being meaning they naturally tend to live in groups and that can
consist of both kin and nonkin. While humans do form communities there are conflicts that have
and will continue to occur because humans possess and exhibit traits both for and against prosocial
behavior. These antisocial traits continue to thrive in humans because it is working in conjunction
with other traits that are desired in humans or the trait themselves yields unexpected, but welcome
behavior. Morality, human s conscience that dictates right from wrong, balances these traits and
encourages this prosocial behavior, by enabling important inclinations such as cooperation and
altruismthat improve human interactions. Generally speaking, actions that benefit the community
will in turn benefit the survival of that individual in the social environments constructed by humans.
While there are methods to both suppress unwanted tendencies and encourage wanted tendencies,
Boehm focuses a significant amount on these suppression techniques. The suppression of such bad
behavior allows coherency in the group.
This will cover a few key mechanisms of this suppression including the guidelines created by
societies, the regulation of them to uphold such ideals and some of the genetic forces that drive
evolution.
An important way to maintain a functioning society is to suppress the individuals who are unable
to abide by the social norm and therefore threaten to disrupt the balance and order of

Persuasive Speech On Secondhand Smoking
I. INTRODUCTION
A. Have you ever gotten in trouble for doing something that you had no part in? Did you feel
irritated when you had to suffer through the consequences? If so, then you are feeling the mutual
hatred just like non smokers. Individuals who do not smoke are suffering from the actions of the
people around them.
B. With intense and thorough research, I have seen that smoking in public does not only affect the
person, but also has an impact on the surrounding people and environment.
C. Today, I d like to talk to you about how banning smoking in public can lead to less secondhand
smoking and health effects, causing fewer environmental issues, and finally, supporting smokers in
giving up smoking.
(Transition into body of speech): I ll begin by telling you how non smokers are at risk by being
around smokers.
II. BODY
A. People who do not smoke, yet are around others who smoke, are in danger of secondhand
smoking.
Since I have asthma, I can relate to people with breathing related conditions, who are at a greater
danger of secondhand smoking, which can cause severe outcomes.
According to the state of Michigan, secondhand smoke can trigger asthma attack, bronchial
infections, and other severe health problems in nonsmokers.
Children with asthma around secondhand smoke have more severe and frequent asthma attacks,
which can put a child s life in danger.
Even for people without breathing conditions, breathing secondhand smoke for a brief period can
be deadly.
The Centers for Disease Control s warned that breathing drifting tobacco smoke for as little as 30
minutes can raise a non smoker s risk of suffering a fatal heart attack to that of a smoker.
Since 1964, over 2.5 million nonsmoker adults passed away due to secondhand smoke.
Secondhand smoke increases risks of certain diseases, such as heart disease and lung cancer.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, secondhand smoke causes over
34,000 premature deaths from heart disease per year in the U.S. among nonsmokers.
Nonsmokers exposed to smoking increase their risk of heart disease by 25 30%.
Even brief exposure to secondhand smoke can damage the lining of blood vessels and cause blood
platelets to become stickier,

True War Story
The essay How To Tell a True War Story written by O Brien complexifies the idea of truth by
furnishing readers divergent approaches on to tell how if a story is true or not, in which its
readers had to utilize their own sense of understanding to interpret what O Brien was

process to make meaning of a text. Stanley Fish, the author of How To Recognize a Poem When

situation really just goes back to the previous one about if you want to get off the island and be

Use Of Irony In Good Country People

and most obvious use of irony in this short story is the title, Good Country People. She uses this
title to describe and express the way society was and how people during that period were

Another example of the author s use of irony is through the character of Manley Pointer, a

a personality totally opposite of a Christian bible salesman. The fact that Joy,

Early Life Stages Of Aging Essay
Aging is a biological process by gradual deterioration of the physiological functions and
metabolic processes. (Hilaire Bakala et al 2012) Exposure to stressful situations during early life
can have intense health consequences and is impaired throughout life. However some cases of
this impact do not become evident until much later in life or decades later, when the individuals
begin to show signs of accelerated ageing. (Katherine A. et al 2014). While understanding the
relationship between early life and longevity has important implications in the field of aging, we
have still little information about the mechanisms involved in the prolonged times scales of stress
aging. A stress can stimulate various pathways leading to increased production of the reactive
oxygen species (ROS) it is well known that are highly reactive and capable of damaged many
biological macro molecules such as DNA, RNA, Proteins, and Lipids (Govinda Rao 1989; Tian et

Analysis Of Joe Garland s In The Mood
The Jazz era was a time period in which the definition of music began to diverge; composers were
able to express themselves in a sense that was soulful and vibrant, where any door of possibility
became obtainable. In The Mood was a piece by Joe Garland composed in the 1930 s during the
swing era. The iconic Jazznumber had been arranged by many artists; however, it was not until
Glenn Millerorchestrated this piece so perceptively that In The Mood became so well renowned.
It was in 1939 when Miller seamlessly altered the Jazz piece that In The Mood was sent to number
1 on the U.S. charts for 13 weeks in 1940. It can be stated that Glenn Miller thoughtfully

Even through imitating the form, melody and rhythm, the piece still transformed into a diverse jazz
piece in comparison to the original. Once more, it is expressed that Glenn Miller thoughtfully
manipulated In The Mood that has in effect redefined this piece; this is proven through the
exploration of three key terminologies: Assimilate, Innovate and Imitate. Fundamentally, Jazz was a
powerful era that essentially changed the notions of music; Glenn Miller successfully explored this
convention and reformed In The Mood that completely altered its definition as a Jazz

Herc Rousseau Self Portrait Sketch
Myself: Portrait Landscape is one of the most representative painting from the genre Portrait
Landscape which created by Henri Rousseau himself. In this painting, the artist (Henri Rousseau)

iron bridge crossing the Seine, and the ship along the river with different countries flags which are
showing the Henri Rousseau favorite part of the city Paris, France. In the foreground, the portrait is
holding the paintbrush and the mixing palette representing Henri Rousseau himself. As Henri

From the title Self Portrait with Seven Fingers and also placing his right hand with seven fingers in
the center part of the painting fully reflects his Jewish background and his identity. In terms of
Jewish Numerology, Seven is the general symbol of god. In the painting, we can see the Eiffel
Tower from the window which showed the viewers that the artist (Marc Chagall) was in Paris,
France. The broken, puzzle like objects showing Marc Chagall s early work out in the idea of
Cubism. The body shapes, the face, the landscape seen from the window and the objects in the
room have been broken down into abstracted forms and appear in two dimensional. And Marc
Chagall used the element of colour and value to create the feeling of volume of the body and the
facial features. The artist (Marc Chagall) applied dark and sober colours on the arms, main body,
legs and on the face which help to create the volume of muscles and protrude the facial features.
In the painting, Marc Chagall also applied the principle of contrast. The colour tone of the whole
painting is low keyed, appearing a dim environment. And the artist (Marc Chagall) painted his
clothes in bright and warm colours like white, yellow and red, this great visual contrast can bring
viewers attention to him. The artist (Marc Chagall) also put emphasis on the size and the use of
colour intensity so

Buber And Arendt Approaches To Zionism
In my paper, I will be compared Buber and Arendt s approaches to Zionism. Although they both
have the same humanist perspective on Zionism, their approaches in their discussion of Zionism is
exceedingly different. Therefore, although both Buber and Arendt recognize the importance of
incorporating the Palestinians in the process of the creation of a Jewish state, Buber has a more
optimistic view than Arendt. However, both Buber and Arendt are critical of nationalism and
imperialist power s influence in the creation of the Jewish homeland. Accordingly, this paper will
assess both Buber and Arendt s views of Zionismand focus on their views of nationalism and the
influence of outside powers.
One thing that I believe is important is each ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Both Buber and Arendt recognize that nationalism played a vital role in the creation of the
conflict. Buber recognized the rise of nationalism in Zionism and referred to as unambiguous
demarcation of a kind, a degenerated kind of nationalism which of late has begun to spread even in
Judaism. (Buber 48) Arendt and Buber were both concerned that Zionist movement would become
exclusive and unappealing. Buber stressed the importance of including the Arabs in the dialogue
and not making Zionism a repressive nationalistic ideology. Like Buber, Arendt was critical of the
rise of nationalism which undermined the original goals of Zionism. Buber was concerned that the
nationalist development would become a permanent fixture and would led to a downfall dyed in
the colors of nationalism. (Buber 52) Therefore, both authors were disappointed with the direction
that Zionism was going. Buber and Arendt s humanist Zionist view led them to hope for peace and
cooperation and dialogue between the Jews and Arabs.
Arendt recognized the dangers of nationalism that necessarily and admittedly depends upon the
force of foreign nation is certainly worse. (Arendt 344) A major issue is that asking outside powers
such as the British to create a Jewish homeland led to Balkanization in the region. Therefore, Arendt
stresses the importance of having an understanding that takes into account the whole region and it s
needs of all the peoples. (Arendt 345) Moreover, Arendt

  • 2. Lying Is A Common Social Phenomenon. In Any Social Context, Lying is a common social phenomenon. In any social context, it presents itself as a factor to hijack any interaction. From a young age, introductions to the ethics of lying are conducted. Arguments as ancient as ancient as Greek philosophers often arise on whether lying in general is right or wrong more specifically lying to children. A little liehere, a small one there, drizzle a bit of Santa Claus into the mix, and one ends up with the bad recipe for incredulity and mistrust. It s that mistrust and damage to credulity that is a snowball that continuously rolls down the hill, getting bigger and doing more damage. As the child gets older, his or her moral evaluation of both lies and truth becomes submersed in doubt. One does not know said child s evaluation without understanding their developments. White lies, ones that prove to be harmless and trivial such as the Santa Lie, are messages that confuse children altogether. Parents hope to teach morals such as lying is always bad, but at the same time cross their fingers and act deceitfully in order to make life easier. The child just ends up confused. Not all lies have negative consequences for the other person, and not all truths have positive consequences for someone else (Carson 1988). The delicate balance between a child s moral understanding is impossible to determine and predict, but it does not stop people from trying to comprehend it. Lies tend to snowball and evolve, making it easier to lie in the future. Before, the science of lying was a pseudo science full of uncertainty, but recently studies came to light which supporting the theory that one lie makes future lies easier. This digression of the moral code and increase of corruption are seen as a numbing agent to the brain. Even with criminal profiling there is no clear path leading to the offender at the end. The criminal profiler s goal as mentioned in the beginning to help investigators examine evidence from crime scenes and eye witness reports, not to solve the crime for investigators. To do so they have developed methods to try to help investigators zero in on the suspect such as organized /disorganized dichotomy and classification schemes. Female sterilization is an irreversible and controversial form of fertility control that most often involves the surgical cutting or tubal ligation of a woman s fallopian tubes (Ruiz Korrol, 2006). Sterilizationwas important for the eugenicsmovement and sterilization of females helped eugenics move forward. People make mistakes, but the maturity level of a person is determined by whether or not the person takes responsibility for their errors. The short story The Man Who Was Almost a Man by Richard Wright and the lyric poem Forgive My Guiltby Robert Coffin both fixate on young boys who wrongly take the lives of creatures with a weapon. The short storyand the lyric poem share a common theme regarding the significance of early life experiences to the maturation process as seen in the way the main characters react to their mistakes. Dave in The Man Who was Almost a Man runs away from his problems while the narrator in Forgive My Guilt holds himself accountable for his action and feels guilty. In the short story, The Man Who Was Almost a Man, Richard Wright uses colloquial language to develop the theme. For instance, in the scene where Dave is accused of killing the mule, the difference in speech used by Dave, a black sharecropper, and Jim Hawkins, his white employer, is evident. Jim Hawkins uses a more formal language when talking to Dave: Well, looks like you have you a mule, Dave (5). In stark contrast, Dave responds using a more informal way of speaking: Ah swear fo Gawd, Ah didn t go t kill the mule, Mistah Hawkins (5). The speech in the story shows the varying degrees of education of the characters in the story and depicts the segregation in the South between whites and blacks. Dave is also a ... A Summary On Corporate Governance Like de Kluyver argued in his publish (A primer on Corporate Governance, 2009), there is a presumption that, in making a business decision, the directors acted on an informed basis, in good faith, and in the honest belief that the action was taken in the best interest of the corporation. • 24. The Importance Of Prosocial Behavior Humans are inherently social being meaning they naturally tend to live in groups and that can consist of both kin and nonkin. While humans do form communities there are conflicts that have and will continue to occur because humans possess and exhibit traits both for and against prosocial behavior. These antisocial traits continue to thrive in humans because it is working in conjunction with other traits that are desired in humans or the trait themselves yields unexpected, but welcome behavior. Morality, human s conscience that dictates right from wrong, balances these traits and encourages this prosocial behavior, by enabling important inclinations such as cooperation and altruismthat improve human interactions. Generally speaking, actions that benefit the community will in turn benefit the survival of that individual in the social environments constructed by humans. While there are methods to both suppress unwanted tendencies and encourage wanted tendencies, Boehm focuses a significant amount on these suppression techniques. The suppression of such bad behavior allows coherency in the group. This will cover a few key mechanisms of this suppression including the guidelines created by societies, the regulation of them to uphold such ideals and some of the genetic forces that drive evolution. An important way to maintain a functioning society is to suppress the individuals who are unable to abide by the social norm and therefore threaten to disrupt the balance and order of ... Did you feel irritated when you had to suffer through the consequences? If so, then you are feeling the mutual hatred just like non smokers. Individuals who do not smoke are suffering from the actions of the people around them. B. With intense and thorough research, I have seen that smoking in public does not only affect the person, but also has an impact on the surrounding people and environment. C. Today, I d like to talk to you about how banning smoking in public can lead to less secondhand smoking and health effects, causing fewer environmental issues, and finally, supporting smokers in giving up smoking. (Transition into body of speech): I ll begin by telling you how non smokers are at risk by being around smokers. II. BODY A. People who do not smoke, yet are around others who smoke, are in danger of secondhand smoking. Since I have asthma, I can relate to people with breathing related conditions, who are at a greater danger of secondhand smoking, which can cause severe outcomes. According to the state of Michigan, secondhand smoke can trigger asthma attack, bronchial infections, and other severe health problems in nonsmokers. Children with asthma around secondhand smoke have more severe and frequent asthma attacks, which can put a child s life in danger. Even for people without breathing conditions, breathing secondhand smoke for a brief period can be deadly. The Centers for Disease Control s warned that breathing drifting tobacco smoke for as little as 30 minutes can raise a non smoker s risk of suffering a fatal heart attack to that of a smoker. Since 1964, over 2.5 million nonsmoker adults passed away due to secondhand smoke. Secondhand smoke increases risks of certain diseases, such as heart disease and lung cancer. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, secondhand smoke causes over 34,000 premature deaths from heart disease per year in the U.S. among nonsmokers.
