The Code Of Silence Essays
The Code of Silence
Some argue that corrupt police officers are simply the product of a corrupt culture of the agency
they work for. These officers are socially introduced to a number of informal rules when they
begin employment. This process and these rules serve two main purposes. First, this process is
designed to minimize the chances of external or internal controls being mobilized to address the
behaviors and, secondly, to keep corrupt activities at a level that is acceptable and likely
undetectable. The rule most often referred to in this connection, is the Code of Silence. Officers
are socialized into not cooperating with investigations regarding fellow officers. Whether or not the
officer participates in corrupt activities for financial gain, an officer s adherence to the Code of
Silence places them squarely amongst the corrupt of the profession (Price, 1972).
Some officers feel that discussing police transgressions regarding behavior or expressing worries
about corruption makes them appear weak or soft . Some officers are uncertain whether certain
gifts, such as flowers from a citizen saying thank you to an officer, are appropriate to accept
(Westmarland, 2005). This uncertainty on the part of officers contributes to the Code of Silence
that at times appears to be present in law enforcement.
The Code of Silence is not simply something which applies only to the patrol officer or the officer
that does not hold rank within the department. The

Internal Domain Name System for Company
Internal Domain Name System for Company Alpha Introduction The DNS is a vital Internet
component providing mechanisms for resolving host names into IP addresses and vice versa. In
addition, DNS supports other Internet directories concerning DNS name servers and mail
exchangers among others (Garfinkel Spafford, 1997). Despite being a universally accepted and
widely used system, insecure protocols and lack of authentication among other factors within the
DNS threaten proper functionality of the DNS. Moreover, the accuracy of the information
contained within the DNS is vital to many aspects of IP based communications. Domain Model
for the Organization The domain appropriate for this organization is the Berkeley Internet Name
Domain (BIND). This domain name is selected since it compatible with most operating systems
including UNIX; it is also used by most Internet Service Providers (Stevens, 1990). In addition,
BIND is recommended for the firm since its configuration files are easier to maintain than other
server DNSs such as Sendmail (Terry, Painter, Riggle, Zhou, 1984). Using this DNS, cache only
name servers are easily placed strategically within the internal network to remove unwanted traffic
and expensive WAN links. Moreover, BIND supports DNS SEC, TSIG IPv4 among other DNS
protocol enhancements. Given the popularity of BIND, it is often targeted by hackers. Therefore,
limiting zone transfers to slave name servers and limiting transfer in the zone can reduce the

Characteristics Of Martin Luther King Jr. And Adolf Hitler
Before this semester I always knew there were many characteristics and deferent types of
leaders. Typically when I thought of a leader, I would think of a team leader. A leader that
involves the creation of a vivid picture of its goals, where it is heading and what it will stand for.
The vision inspires and provides a strong sense of purpose and direction. In the easy sense when I
thought of a leader I would think of a quarterback for a football team, commander in the army, and
or a bossof a company. I also knew there was a visionary leader because that s what type of leader I
am. When I think of whose a good leader I think of two people, Martin Luther King Jr. and Adolf
Hitler. These two people were two totally different leaders but they were both great leaders.
Martin Luther Kind JR. led the Civil Rights movements in the United States. He used
nonviolent, or peaceful, protest to try to get equal rights for African Americans. He aroused
white and black alike to protest racial discrimination, poverty, and war. He would give amazing
speeches such as I have a dream in front of 250,000 people. Hitler was a good leader but
obviously was a terrible person. Hitler turned hundred of thousands of people into Nazis. Some key
areas that Hitler was good at was his vision, change management, compassion, charisma, and
develop the team and making the team better.

Summary Of Margaret Atwood s The Victory Burlesk
Madeleine Davies had once said that Margaret Atwood s female bodies are inevitably coded bodies
that tell the story of the subject s experience within a political economy that seeks to consume them,
convert them into consumers in turn, shrink them, neutralize them, silence them, and contain them
physically or metaphorically. (Davies 60). In Margaret Atwood s short story, The Victory Burlesk,
Atwood is showing just that; Atwood is demonstrating how a womanis shrunken, silenced, and
contained. This short story is bringing attention to how people feel shamefor women in realization
of reality, and how there is a focus on the Good Woman and the Bad Woman , how Bad Woman are
represented.
The Victory Burlesk is a story in which a woman is on stage and reveals herself as an elderly
woman, putting on a show for one another to watch, a show in which people in the audience began
to feel shame about. I could feel shame washing through me. (Atwood 20 21), there is a woman on
the stage, making herself vulnerable for everyone to see, and yet others are shameful in this
situation. Why do others feel shame? Because there is a realization that this woman is real. That
that is a actual body up there, one that no one wants to sexualize anymore due to her age and
appearance. But also because they are not properly showing the representation of how women are
shown on stage. Difference can make one feel uncomfortable, to the point they feel shame for
another person. It was seen as if

The Effect Of Cultural Difference On Correspondence Bias
We examined the effect of cultural difference on correspondence bias. The aim of this study was to
compare levels of correspondence bias in attitude attributions in Malaysians with levels of such bias
in Australians where is individualistic. We had 40 participants from Malaysia and 40 participants
from Australia between the ages 18 30 year olds. The study was entirely in the English language;
also it was administered on the internet. We recruited participants via English language Facebook
advertisements. The participants completed tasks evaluating their age, gender and nationality.
Based on the essay content condition, the participants were divided in half; half of the participants
were asked to read an essay that opposed capital punishment (anti capital punishment), on the other
hand the other half read an essay that supported capital punishment (pro capital punishment).
Participants were asked to write an essay according to their choice condition half of them had no
choice condition and the other half had choice condition. The results of this research were that
correspondence bias does emerge in both Malaysian and Australian participants. In conclusion our
study looked at correspondence bias in two different cultures. The finding of our study was that
correspondence bias emerges in both Malaysian and Australian participants. On daily bases we as
humans act differently, our attitudes are different; the way each of us behaves could be very

Running head: DISTINCTIONS BETWEEN CLASSICAL AND OPERANT CONDITIONING
Abstract
There are many differences between classical and operant conditioning that will be discussed in this
paper. These two types of conditioning are often misinterpreted by many individuals; therefore, it is
important to distinguish the two. Learning the different ways animals function and the new
behaviors they adapt to are of interest to both Ivan Pavlov and Edward Thorndike. .Sex differences
are measured and taken in consideration in both kinds of conditioning processes. ... Show more

For instance, a toddler who burns his hand on a cooking stove will be less likely to come near it
next time, remembering how he got burnt from it. Another form of punishment is when a behavior
ends on a desirable event.
An example of this is when a boy pulls his sister s hair and is given a time out, which has lost his
privilege to watch TV. The boy has learnt a lesson because he won t dare to even touch his sister s
hair remembering he had lost his privilege to watch TV.
Classical conditioning deals with involuntary responses, primarily involving emotions, whereas,
operant conditioning deals with voluntary responses that are active behaviors operating within the
environment. Compared to operant conditioning, classical conditioning is more passive because in
operant conditioning, learners are either getting rewarded for something or punished for something,
which keeps the process active. Organisms experience a consequence despite of the fact they have
learned the conditioned response. On the other hand, in operant conditioning, the consequence is
dependent on the likelihood of the organism reacting to the response. Khawaja 5
Running head: DISTINCTIONS BETWEEN CLASSICAL AND OPERANT CONDITIONING
How do you determine the type of conditioning, whether it is classical or operant?
Focusing on the outcome or consequence is the key to determining between the two because if the
outcome occurs regardless of a response to be shown, then the paradigm is

Haroun and the Sea of Stories Closed Reading
So Iff the Water Genie told Haroun about the Ocean of the Streams of Story, and even though he
was full of a sense of hopelessness and failure the magic of the ocean began to have an effect on
Haroun. He looked into the water and saw that it was made up of a thousand thousand thousand
and one currents, each one a different colour, weaving in and out of one another like a liquid
tapestry of breathtaking complexity; and Iff explained that these were the Streams of Story, that
each coloured strand represented and contained a single tale. Different parts of the ocean contained
different sorts of stories, and all the stories that had ever been told and many that were still in the
process of being invented could be found here, the Ocean of the... Show more content on

The passage personifies the ocean by talking of its playful nature of the currents weaving in and
out of one another and its ability to change, as it has a mind of its own. The last sentence within
the passage states it was not dead but alive the use of short sentencing emphasised its point and
indicates its importance. However this short verse changes the mood of the passage, the reader is
confronted by the abrupt word dead this single word changes the tone of the sentence and explores
that along with the capability to be alive there also is the capability to be dead. This foreshadows
the next passage and the future of the ocean.
Within the passage the metaphor of the ocean being a library is emphasised, it states that it is the
biggest library in the universe this metaphor is used to try and example the extent of the sea and
how many stories it possesses, connecting it to a familiar idea for the reader. However the
metaphor is later contradicted renouncing the oceans likeness to a library of books due to the fluid
form of the stories and their changing nature and ability to become new versions and to join up with
other stories. It presents the ocean to be much more. This is revisited throughout the novel,
exampling how the ocean is much more and how it is a health source to plentimaws fish, directly
impacting them as the ocean becomes more toxic, as well as a way of life to all members of gup city.

Is American Football Better Than Rugby
American Football is better than Rugby because in Football there are four chances to get a first
down and run down the field to get a touchdown and makes the game more exciting when the
teams try to get a first down and it makes players able to make amazing plays.
American Football is a game where there are two teams with an offense, who are trying to score a
touchdown by either running the ball, or throwing the ball into the endzone to get a touchdown
while the defense are trying to stop them. The objective of the game is to be the team with the
most points. The Offense has a quarterback who is trying to either throw the ball to the Wide
Receiver or anyone else that is open. There is another option to get yards, which is using a Running

American Football resulted from different changes to a Soccer match in Britain. It came from the
multiple rule changes from Walter Camp (Father of Football) a student from Yale University. Along
with the rule changes came the line of scrimmage and the down distance. Along with a couple
other guys, Camp helped create the forward pass play. The first pro football can be traced back to
1892 with Allegheny Athletic Association and being renamed to the National Football Leaguein
1920.
Rugby is a sport where the objective is to carry or kick the ball towards the other team s goal.
This is called a try. One team can run forward and only pass the ball backwards and sideways.
The play can keep going on if someone is tackled, either they throw it or they pass the ball to one
of their teammates. The attacking has a total of six tackles before a possession is changed. Ball
control is important because if someone fumbles, when someone drops a ball while it is in play, it

Quadratic Formula Research Paper
Completing the square is use to prove the quadratic formula. Given ax^2+bx+c=0 we first have to
make the coefficient of x^2 to be one. We divided the original formula by a: x^2+b/c x+c/a=0/a
since 0/a we still have our quadratic equation. Subtract that c/a in both sides: x^2+b/c x+c/a c/a= c
/a remember that b/a is b/2(a) now we will have to add it to the root of two: x^2+b/a x+b^2/(4a^2
)=b^2/(4a^2 ) c/a next is to set up our denominators to be the same we should have (x+b
/2a)^2=b^2/(4a^2 ) 4ac/(4a^2 ) now that our denominators are the same we need to combine like
terms: (b^2 4ac)/(4a^2 ) in this step it resembles somewhat a part of the quadratic formula but we
still missing more steps. Now grab the x+b/2a and subtract the b/2a also put the... Show more

Writing the y intercept in interval notation is [15/8,в€
ћ). The axis of symmetry has been found also
which is where the x of the vertex is meaning that it is x=1/4. We will now find where does it
increases and decreases, this should be easy now that we have our vertex and knowledge that all
quadratic equations are parabolas. We know that the domain is ( в€
ћ,в€
ћ) any line coming from the
negative side it will decrease while the positive side will increase. Then the side that is decreasing
will stop to decrease at ( в€
ћ,1/4), it will then begin to increase at (1/4,в€
ћ). This time we are
finding the x and y intercept, beginning with the x intercept we are going to use the discriminant of
the quadratic equation which is b^2 4ac. Plugging the numbers, it will be ( 1)^2 4(2)(2) the
solution will be a negative fifteen. The rule of a discriminant is that there cannot be negative
numbers for x, this time there are no x intercept. the x intercept does not exist we will replace it
with a zero so the y intercept can be found, by plugging the numbers y=2(0)^2 0+2 we will have
the answer of y=2. The quadratic equation will be crossing the y intercept at (0,2). Now writing the

Amadeus Conflict Essay
I believe the central conflict in Amadeus is Salieri s jealousy towards Mozart. Salieri really
admires Mozart and his outstanding music even though Mozart is a few years younger than him.
Salieri begins to feel envy and jealousy towards Mozart when Mozart enters the emperor s palace
and calls one of Salieri s old songs a funny little tune. Mozart then proceeds to point out the flaws
in the piece and explains how Salieri could improve his piece making Salieri question why God
had blessed someone like Mozart with such talent.
In the following scene, we learn that Prince Elizabeth, the emperor s niece, needs a tutor. The
emperor immediately thinks of Mozart but Salieri being the envious individual that he is turns
the idea down quickly and suggests that he should have people apply for the position instead.
Mozart refuses to apply for the position so his wife Constanze decides to take matters into her
own hands and goes and speaks to Salieri; Salieri is part of the committee who reviews
applications for Prince Elizabeth s tutor. He is willing to help Mozart get the position only if
Constanze sleeps with him later in the evening; she arrives and gets undressed right before anything

The Track And The Multi Track
System (P1)
The Tracks:
There are three tracks in the civil court system, the small claims track, the fast track and the
multi track. These three tracks were formed under the Civil Procedure Act 1997 to make it easier
to deal with cases of different complexity. The Act has put in place a series of checks to sort the
cases according to size of case, the complexity of the case and the size of the compensation asked
for. This is achieved through a questionnaire completed by the parties.
Small Claim courts:
Cases in the small claims court are heard by District judges in a county court, the court will hear
contract and tort cases up to ВЈ10,000 and personal injury claims up to ВЈ1000. The hearing is
informal and the courts discourage people ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The court will set a strict timetable in order to stop time wasting and to keep costs low. Once the
case is set for a hearing, it will be heard within thirty weeks. Fixed costs will be allowed and the
hearing will be one day long.
Only one expert can be used, for example, in a case involving mechanical problems between the
manufacturer and the dealer, an engineer may be used in order to give advice on the technicality at
hand. The judge decide how much the losing party has to pay in legal fees to the winner, to decide
this both parties have to hand in a form stating how much money they have spent in legal fees in
order for the judge to decide.
Multi Track Claims:
Cases on the fast track are heard by a Circuit judge in a County court, the court will hear cases over
ВЈ25,000 (therefore it has no limit) or cases with a complex point. Cases on this track can be sent
to the High Court (Queens Bench Division, Family Division, or Chancery Division) if it contains
complex points of law. The judge will case manage therefore setting a strict timetable for matters
such as document disclosures.
The use of ADR, such as arbitration, will be encouraged in order to avoid having to go to court
and therefore keep costs low.

How Has Eastern Europe Changed After Ww2
World War One and World War Two were very tragic wars that caused over 80.5 million deaths.
What occurred after the war was amazing. The essential question that is asked is, How has Eastern
Europe changed since World War Two? Eastern Europe has changed since World War Two because,
Economy, Hitler, and because of government.
The first reason why Eastern Europe has changed is because of the economy. In 1999 after World
War Two Europe created the EU to help trading. This made it so they would be more trade because
at this time most countries were switching over to market economy. The also created the Euro.
Poland was taken over by the soviet union in World War One and forced into a command economy,
but later on became independent and switched over to a market economy. This was before Europe
had created the EU but poland wasn t the only one to switch over. Many others switched and that
might of been the influence to create the EU. Therefore that is the first way Eastern Europe has
changed since World War Two.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of the reasons World War Two started was because Hitler promised more land. As you may
know Hitler is dead and his death was basically the end of the war besides the United states and
Russia. Hitler did capture a lot of land but we worked together to destroy him. The Holocaust was a
reason of World War Two. Hitler was the mastermind behind the Holocaust. He was forcing his
people and soldiers to be apart of it too. Once Hitler was dead his people were free from his reigns
and able to do good again. That is the second reason how Eastern Europe has changed since World
War

Culture can be defined as a belief that allows you to identify who you are. Thus, through cultre

each person s unique role: Summarizer Questioner Clarified Predictor Have students read a few
paragraphs of the assigned text selection. Encourage them to use note taking strategies such as
selective underlining or sticky notes to help them better prepare for their role in the discussion. At
the given stopping point, the Summarizer will highlight the key ideas up to this point in the
reading. The Questioner will then pose questions about the selection: Unclear parts Puzzling

Emma s Self Propelled Downfall
Emma s Self propelled Downfall Gustave Flaubert s Madame Bovary, is the story of Emma, a
naГЇve girl who dreams of having a life, bigger than the one she can ever achieve. Flaubert
throughout the story depicts average members of society with all their faults. Greed, lust, deceit,
and incompetence are the stock in trade of all his characters. The story has no heroes, only losers
and fools who waste their unfulfilled lives. Emma schooled in a convent is desperate to feel the
excitement of real love as she imagines it to be. Emma is married to Charles Bovary, the first man
she ever really knows. Charles is the classic underachiever whose shortcomings plague Emma
throughout their marriage. Charles will never have the position, money, success, or class status
she so desperately desires. Marriage, a child, and respectability cannot assuage her
disappointment in herself and her life. She finds solace and excitement in things she cannot
afford and men she cannot resist. Emma has no one to blame but herself for all her failings. Her
ego and sense of entitlement overrides her common sense and allows her to borrow money that
she will never be able to repay. Like an addict without self control, she continues borrow money
and have affairs that never really satisfy her. She hates herself for her deceptions and constantly
fears exposure. Her life becomes a downward spiral of lies and shame that eventually ends in the
coward s solution of suicide. Emma s story begins with Charles

Cezanne, Lowry and Landscapes Essay
Cezanne, Lowry and Landscapes
Cezanne
Paul Cezanne, who was the son of a wealthy banker, became a painter in the 1860s in Paris when
he quit his studies of Law. By 1874 he was painting landscapes in the Impressionist manner and
had some of his work included in their first exhibition held during that very same year. He painted
in the Impressionistic manner, but sheared off in a different direction to the main body of
Impressionist painters. The main body of Impressionist painters were concerned with the fleeting
effects of light and colour , and in order to capture the surface impression of that moment they had
to work fluently and quickly . s analysis was far more prolonged and pains taking; He spent so long

the road twists out of sight past the rocks into a cool tree filled valley. His way of working is so
explicit; as we look at the surface of the picture we are aware of his every brushmark, and we can
imagine his subtle colour mixing and careful balancing of colour and tone. He used colour not to
fill in outlines, but, as a true colourist used it to create forms. He believed that colour and line were
inseparable and interwove them, applying one over the other in his work. His angled brush strokes

awareness of the need to realise his objectives while he still had time.

Early African Societies Essay
The beginning of time has always played a major role in history. The beginning of time explains the
reasons for each and every creature, plant, and unexplainable phenomena that have occurred on this
earth. Chapter one of World History: A Topical Approach primarily explains to the reader the
different arguments that people believe are true. There are many claims that scientist have found to
be very true, but then there are others who believe in a phenomenon quite different. Some scientists
date the beginning of existence as far as twenty billion years ago, but there are others who believe
that the world is really not that old. Human existence has taken its tollupon many great researchers
who have searched to understand human ancestry. It... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even the book itself states that prior to Homo erectus, all hominids were found in Africa, the
cradle of human evolution. Darwin even targeted Africa as the birthplace of human existence. In
terms of the missing link, the first set of finds came from England, whose nearest non human
relatives were from Africa. So everything that deals with the human existence relates back to
Africa. This series of studies makes you stop and think. Maybe our race was here first, and as
time went on different shades of colors were introduced. The many different shades of color moved
to different regions of the world to start their own culture and develop a civilization.
There are many different aspects of taking the development of the human existence. Some
people believe it originated in Europe and others believe something different. Who is to say who
is right and wrong? No one can judge just by the scientific facts that are presented within this
text. The search for this knowledge of human existence is only so close. People might even have
to look to a higher source for this means of knowledge. In other words, the only being that would
know the answer to all the questions is God. But until then, we must lean on the shoulders of our
own people to seek the knowledge for which we are looking.
The earliest civilizations have taught philosophers about many cultures. As people began to settle

Pros And Cons Of Eias For Landfills
Alternatives: As previously mentioned, Gupta et al. believe current methods of conducting EIAs
are ineffective. Therefore, they propose an unconventional method for conducting EIAs for landfill
siting: a multivariable calculation of implicated factors using a fuzzy relation, or fuzzy clustering.
This involves the attribution of a weight to each qualitative factor, in order to accurately assess the
environmental impacts of landfills. This method distinguishes itself from the others because it
accounts for the uncertainty caused by the expert s subjectivity, and for the lifetime of the landfill.
The result of this method is a fuzzy relation between frequency of occurrence and the impact on

There is room for a lot of improvement in Quebec s waste management: currently, about half of
household waste is eliminated (MDDELCC, 10) which is not economically viable. To reach its
sustainability goal, the province drafted the Quebec policy for waste management 2011 2015.
By the end date, it aims to reduce household waste to 700kg/person and to increase the diversion
rate of paper, plastic, glass and metal scraps to 70%, and of organic waste to 60% (MDDELCC,
11). An additional benefit of these propositions is the creation of hundreds of jobs (MDDELCC,
2011). The plan, albeit optimistic, is still unclear about how to effectively implement waste
recovery. In 2012, 6 years after the start of the City of Montreal s composting initiative, only 12%
of organic waste was being recovered (Bruemmer, 2014). Montreal plans on building two
biomethanization plants (where compost is converted into biogas), along with two composting
facilities (Bruemmer, 2014). Four proposed sites have been rejected due to public opposition while
an existing one closed this summer. Situated in Montreal s Southwest borough, the latter estimates
that its yearly methane offset equals 800 000m3, which represents about 35 000 tonnes of carbon
dioxide. This is worth nearly 500 000$ in the Quebec cap and trade system (Compost Montreal,

Research Paper On The French Revolution
France is one of the biggest fashion capitals of the world. French fashion is still a big part of the
clothing industry today, with brands like Chanel, Dior, etc. The French Revolution was a big thing
that happened in France and it caused a lot of problems such as the end of the monarchy and many
wars. The French Revolution started in 1789 and ended in 1799 when Napoleon Bonaparte took
power.
The different variations of French fashion include the different eras of fashion. Early 17th century
fashion consisted of men wearing doublets while women wore tight bodices with rigid padding and
long, full skirts with the help of hoops. The late 17th century fashion consisted of more freedom

A Reflection On Race
Reflection 3: Race Race is a group of people of common ancestry, distinguished from others by
physical characteristics, such as skin, eyes, and hair. Race is the one thing that surrounds us and
helps form us without even thinking. People don t think twice about judging someone and guessing
their race. It happens naturally now when you first look or meet someone. Racealso is involved with
a variety of values, assumption, and historical meaning. That explains why people who don t
believe in stereotypes can easily recite them. In the 1900s, deciding who was an american and
who was not was a significant thing that was going on. The film states, Whiteness was not just
being a skin color, to be white was to gain the full rewards of american citizenship. In other
words, if you weren t considered white, you lived a struggled life. The ideal thing in the 1900s
was to be considered white because that is when you were able to have the most opportunities
and do something for family. The film also explains that in 1909 courts and legislators would
determine who was white. People started question how the would work out in the sufficient way
but the problem was that different states would consider different things. For example, In Virginia
you were considered black if you had 1/16 of black in you. While in Florida it was 1/8 but Alabama
considered you black if you had any black in you. In other words people could walk across a state
line and change race. Therefore, people question what is the main criteria for being American .
The film states that you would have to gain full rewards of american citizenship to be considered
white and it had to be decided through a judge. This leads to a large amount of flaws. For
instance, in 1915 Leo Frank, a jew in atlanta was pulled from jail and hung for killing a white
girl. People started to question what was white and if a Jew could be considered a white man.
People who were seen as non american were seen as the enemy. They strip them of their civil
liberties and put them in internment camps. This start becoming a problem because what becomes
our country if most people are getting kicked out and killed. The problem was that there was no
exact way to calculate if you were

Theme Of Naturalism In The Open Boat
Naturalism in The Open Boat
Naturalism is an outgrowing literary movement from realism, a more specific writing method. The
literature network states, Naturalism sought to go further and be more explanatory than Realism by
identifying the underlying causes for a person s actions or beliefs (Naturalism). Naturalism is used
to explain more of the natural occurring events and social behaviors, the characters behavior and
believes. One of the first and leading writers to use this literary method was Stephen Crane. Crane s
famous story, The Open Boat , is a perfect example of a naturalist piece of writing work. In the
story, the characters are four men; The Captain, The Cook, The Correspondent, and The Oiler.
The four men were initially travelling in a ship called the SS Commodore, when they hit a
sandbar and the ship sank. The four men must travel in a small boat, in a terrible storm in the
middle of the sea for more than 30 hours, trying to row their way to a lifesaving station in an
island. The devastating days leave the four men to accept the fact that they might not make it
home at the end of the day, but they do not have any control over their situation. Therefore, they
only have one choice which is to accept their fate, and this story is based on a real life experience
Crane had.
Crane starts by describing how the four men have not seen a clear blue sky in days, and in fact,
they did not remember what a cloudless sky looks like. The readers can feel that the four men are
tired and losing hope as they keep rowing throughout their days. Crane describes and makes the
readers understand how each character is contemplating their life threatening situation. The setting
emphasizes devastation: The correspondent, pulling at the other oar, watched the waves and
wondered why he was there... (Crane). Crane uses naturalism by describing how bad the weather
was and how it is affecting them. He also emphasizes naturalism by having them realize that fate
has chosen their path, and nature is taking its own course
Crane uses two conflicts in the story, and the most natural one is Man vs. Nature, the external
conflict. Crane utilizes naturalism with this conflict to make the reader understand that men have
no power over

The Effect Of Ballistics On Forensic Science

In Defense Of Bottled Water By Thomas J. Lauria
Bottled Water Versus Cost According to The Water Project, Bottles used to package water take
over 1,000 years to bio degrade and if incinerated, they produce toxic fumes. It is estimated that
over 80% of all single use water bottles used in the U.S. simply become litter ( Bottled Water is
Wasteful ). This fact is not the only reason I believe that bottled waterdoes not outweigh its costs.
Although statistics show that bottled water is efficient, there are many reasons to believe
otherwise. As aforementioned, there are explanations to believe that bottled water does
outweigh its repercussions. Thomas J. Lauria, author of In Defense of Bottled Water , states,
Bottled water provides a healthy choice when tap water is not accessible ( In Defense of Bottled
Water ). In this article, Lauria states that bottled water is a topic of great interest. He goes on to
discuss that in the United States, Adults consume 450 calories a day from beverages and sixty
eight percent of those twenty years old and older are classified as overweight or obese, bottled
water provides a healthy choice when tap water is not accessible, preferred, or convenient ( In
Defense of Bottled Water ). Sure, this is fact and definitely a benefit to bottled water. Lauria
continues to say that if bottled water is not offered then people will be more likely to choose soda,
juices, or options similar to those. He says that banning bottled water will urge people to consume
unhealthy beverages because

William Shakespeare s Julius Caesar
William Shakepeare s Julius Caesar
Mark Antony proves to be the most skilful politician in the play. Do you agree?
Power is the ability to influence the behaviour of others whether this is achieved with or without
resistance, for good or for bad. Some would go as far as to say that all human behaviour is
propelled by the want of power. One can conclude, however, that power is inevitable in the human
society. It s natural. William Shakespeare s play, Julius Caesar
, is brimming with humans fighting
for power, and the one who stands out as the most skilful of these is not the play s tragic hero
Brutus, but Mark Antony, Caesar s confidant and friend.

characteristic is the one Caesar had observed in him, that is, his ability to perceive the true
motives of men. He uses his sharp insight to deceive Brutus, by means of a long and passionate
argument and fake letters, into joining his conspiracy to assassinate Caesar. He knows that Brutus
noble nature will serve as a catalyst to recruit more nobles into his conspiracy. Ironically, his

The Executive Of The Virgin Company
Sir Richard Branson is a global entrepreneur and also the chairman of the Virgin Company. Within
a large company such as Virgin, it is very important to work in a team, and there are a diverse
range of teams that exist within the Virgin group such as the top management team, problem
solving team, continuous improvement team, cross functional team and the work team. A top
management team is defined as the CEO, executives or general manager, vice presidents and other
top department heads whose job is to help the organisation achieve its mission and goals. (Kinicki,
404) This can be seen from the behavior of Branson giving the employees his private number and
paying close attention to every firm as he wants to help those people and companies within the
Virgin groupwho are belligerent. Many of the cabin crews are hired only during the peak season
and then they are disbanded. This is an example of a problem solving team as they only meet as a
temporary team. Moreover, there are interest groups and friendship groups exist within the group.
Branson actually encourages this by giving freedom to the employees as he thinks it is important
for the employees get to know each other well on a more personal level helping to build a friendly

improvement team. And the other significant teams that exist within the Virgin Group are the work

The Legacy Of The Civil War
Times of war often debut new technology that shapes the future. Seeing as how the Civil War was
known as the first modern war, it is appropriate to say that much new technological advancement
was made. Behind every piece of new technology or idea, there is a person or team that dedicated
their time to the development. When it comes to the Civil Waraeronautics and much other future
advancement, Thaddeus S. C. Lowe is the man behind it. Lowe was an integral part in the success
of the aeronautics division of the war and paved the way for the world s future success in many
other fields.
Thaddeus Lowe s work was greatly under appreciated. He and other aeronauts proved time and

aeronauts as observers should have stirred up enthusiasm for balloons as military weapons, but
neither the Army nor the American public properly appreciated the potential of aeronautics
(Scamehorn 9). This never stopped Lowe from pursuing his dream. He fought to make ends meet
by taking odd jobs so he could finance his education in physics and other subjects that would
eventually set him up for his success in aeronautics. Through his persistent work, at thirty years of
age, Thaddeus Lowe had organized an aeronautics corps for the Union Army something that only
a handful of people wanted to see happen at the time (Military Intelligence Corps Hall of Fame).

Sir Gawain Archetype
The common archetype of the knight is seen as Christian and chivalric, yet by the end of the text,
Gawain is neither. The narrative begins by portraying Gawain as the epitome of medieval
chivalric values, being respectful towards Arthur and Gweniviere. However, by the end of the
text, we quickly realise his morals are not so clear cut, as he lies and steals from his host. In fact, it
is suggested that Gawainis neither Christian nor chivalric, characteristics tested within the Green

Mary is associated with loyalty and virginity. Gawain was hardly loyal to the promise he made

Globalization Of Dreams And Its Effects On Dreams
Globalization of Dreams
The focus of this study is to continue previous research relating the significance of cultures and
dreams. These studies have set out to show what how much of an effect culture has on dreams. To
measure this, other researchers have recorded participants typical dreams. These studies have
helped us to understand some of the differences in beliefs, values, and structure of other cultures as
well as the differences and similarities. Through analyzing the differences and similarities of our
various cultures we learn what humans share in values as a whole and how our society influences
our thinking and actions. By interviewing two people from two different collectivistic cultures,
there should be a great deal of similarities between the two. Any differences recorded found will be
derived from individual perspectives rather than culture. The goal of the research is to show culture
doesn t heavily influence our dreams but rather individual perceptions of the world around them do.
There isn t a significant difference in typical dreams between cultures, rather researchers tend to
agree that culture doesn t have much of an effect on dreams and it has more to do with our
individual perception of our day (Jaenicke 2009).
In Griffith, Miyago, and Tago s (1958) study of The Universality of Typical Dreams: Japanese vs.

Buddha s Teachings And Meditation
here are many special or holy days held throughout the year by the Buddhist community. Many of
these days celebrate the birthdays of Bodhisattvas in the Mahayana tradition or other significant
dates in the Buddhist calendar. The most significant celebration happens every May on the night of
the full moon, when Buddhist all over the world celebrate the birth, enlightenment and death of the
Buddha over 2,500 years ago. It has become to be known as Buddha Day.
Buddhist Festivals are always joyful occasions. Typically on a festival day, lay people will go the
the local temple or monastery and offer food to the monks and take the Five Precepts and listen to
a Dharma talk. In the afternoon, they distribute food to the poor to make merit and in the evening
join perhaps in a ceremony of circumambulation a stupa three time as a sign of respect to the
Buddha, Dhamma, Sangha. The day will conclude with evening chanting of the Buddha s teachings
and meditation.
The Thai Buddhist Calendar (similar if not the same as the Laotian and Cambodian)
Some holy days are specific to a particular Buddhist tradition or ethnic group (as above). There are
two aspects to take into consideration regarding Buddhist festivals: Most Buddhists, with the
exception of the Japanese, use the Lunar Calendar and the dates of Buddhist festivals vary from

In doing this, the research is focused on the potential psychological and behaviour outcomes that
result from customer interaction with visual merchandising, rather than directly trying to establish
what constitutes best practice per se or manipulating visual merchandising techniques themselves.
The context chosen for investigation is female fashion in the UK. This particular retail sector was
chosen as it has recently elevated visual merchandising to an issue of board level concern (Lea
Greenwood, 1998). Given this situation the sector affords an ideal context in which to investigate
the impact of such cues on customers, as the degree of retailer sophistication in this area is likely
to be higher than that displayed by organisations in other sectors. Within the female fashion sector
the department store was selected as the specific venue for investigation. This is because it offers
distinctive merchandising possibilities for a number of brands both retail and clothing based. Here,
the retail brands are derived from those stores that source and display own brand assortments, and
the clothing based brands stem from either a manufacturing or design base. Within the department
store these brands are merchandised within their own concessions in a way that holds a number of
extraneous variables constant for example, building type or specific shop location. This makes the
use of such a research context advantageous as it minimises the

Causes Of Racism In America
The United States of America is a country that was built on the very principles of liberty, freedom,
and prosperity, as well as discrimination and racism. Thomas Paine, a prominent English writer who
supported the American Revolution, argued that America was among the best nations in the entire
world. He believed that the government was completely fair, that tolerance existed in all parts of
the country, and that America was the land of diversity. His claims, although seemingly positive,
are not completely consistent with the history nor status of this nation today. The tolerance and
freedom in this country was achieved at a very high cost. Although America is a democracy and its
citizens are widely diverse, it is also a place of bigotry and political unsettlement. Despite the fact
that America has made significant progress towards tolerance and acceptance, this country still
today struggles with politics and has unresolved issues with the government.
Racism has been a drag within the us of America for a protracted time, qualitative analysis back to
early America once the Native Americans were typically attacked, relocated, and forcibly
assimilated into European culture. The African slave traffic additionally helped contribute to the
atmosphere of a racist culture in America by dishonorable the African races and teaching Caucasian
Americans that they re higher than the African races. though the civil rights of African yanks have
improved over the previous few decades and

How Hemingway Has Too Strong Opinions On Homosexuality
Hemingway has extremely strong opinions on homosexuality, which Gertrude Stein attempts to
dissuade by convincing him that those who attempt to assault young boys are not well in their
heads. While Stein attempts this, Hemingway proclaims that because homosexuality exists, you
[carry] a knife and would use it when you were in the company of tramps when you were a boy
in the days when wolves was not a slang term for men obsessed by the pursuit of women
(Hemingway 16). It seems that Hemingway does not realize that, when objectifying women, he
turns into one of the wolves of which he is so afraid. However, Hemingway maintains his fear of
homosexuality; he ridicules an effeminate homosexual named Hal, satirizes Fitzgerald s sexual
uncertainties, and professes disgust at the lesbian practices of Stein and Toklas (Kennedy 187).
Hemingway is horrified by homosexuals, because he is afraid that he will be objectified by
homosexual men just as he objectifies the women in his own life. He believes that leering after
unsuspecting partners is only okay when he is an active participant; he is just afraid of being
objectified and therefore, forced into an action against his own will. However, homosexuality
disturbs Hem, less because it involves alternate erotic practices than because it subvert his
fundamental assumptions about sex, gender, and desire (Kennedy 191). He believes that men are
only right to objectify, not to be objectified. He believes that the gender and sexual

The Japanese Castles And Power During The Nineteenth Century
To understand the Japanese castles, one must immerse in history of the country. Japan despite a
very different culture, like the old continent, also had a medieval time. Different regions were
then divided into small entities over which ruled a local lord. The equivalence would be Dukes
or Counts. The Emperor of divine ancestry, could be seen as the Pope while the Shogun was in
charge of the power of the reigning emperor. This feudal system then required to have stronghold,
but it is only with the unification of the country that the real castles were built in the very short
period of a few decades, at the end the sixteenth century. Those castles experienced a very rapid
peak with stabilization over several decades to finally be nearly all destroyed before being rebuilt in
the twentieth century.
Before the nineteenth century, two clans battle for the seizure of power during the Heian period
(794 1185): the Minamoto clan and the Taira clan. Between 1180 and 1185, Japan went through a
great civil war with the final victory of the Minamoto clan. During this period, the power of the
emperor was still strong.
Japan then enters its feudal phase called the Kamakura period, from 1185 to 1333. The emperor
was not playing much than a passive role in the management of the country, mainly present for
ceremonies. Civilian and military functions were in the hands of the samurai. The most powerful of
these is the samurai shogun... It was the first military government called Bakufu.

Introduction to Noise and Vibration Damping
INTRODUCTION TO NOISE AND VIBRATION DAMPING
Vibrations are undesirable for structures, due to the need for structural stability, position control,
durability, performance, and noise reduction. Vibrations are concern to large structures such as
aircraft and small structures such as electronics.
Reduction of Vibration can be attained by increasing damping capacity and increasing the stiffness.
The loss modulus is the product of these two quantities and thus can be considered a figure of merit
for the vibration reduction ability.
Structural damping can be achieved by passive or active methods. Passive methods use the inherent
ability of certain materials (it can be structural or non structural materials) to absorb the vibrational
energy (example, through mechanical deformation), which provides passive energy dissipation. An
active method uses sensors and actuators to attain vibration sensing and activation to suppress the
vibration in real time. The sensors and actuators are usually piezoelectric devices. This review is
focused on materials for passive damping, due to its relatively low cost and ease of implementation
Materials for vibration damping are mainly metals and polymers, due to their viscoelastic character.
Rubber is commonly used as a vibration damping material due to its viscoelasticity. Though,
viscoelasticity is not the only mechanism for damping. Defects such as dislocations, phase
boundaries, grain boundaries and various interfaces also contribute to damping,

Frank Mccourt s Angelas Ashes
Frank McCourt s Angela s Ashes is a memoir consisting of various memories and stories from
Frank McCourt s childhood. As a child, Frank was deprived of many opportunities because of his
social class; these limitations are what make Frank so determined to gain people s respect.
The memoir takes place in New York, Frank s birthplace, and Ireland, where Frank spent the
majority of his childhood. Franks childhood takes place in Limerick, Ireland during the times
where poverty and social snobbery were common. Frank was born in Brooklyn, New York in
1930. Frank is the oldest of all his siblings. Soon after Frank is born his younger brother Malachy
Jr. and a year later the twins Oliver and Eugene are born. With each addition to their family
Malachy, Franks father, and Angela, Franks mother, are struggling to support their growing family.
Also with Franks father, Malachy, who has alcoholic tendencies and spends his entire salary on
alcohol is an attribute to the struggling ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The family is forced to move in with one of Angela s cousins who forces Angela into sexual
relations. Due to her starving children, Angela complies to the relation. By this time Franks
dream is to move to America, his place of birth, and to get a job there to help support his family.
Franks first job is a telegram delivery boy and later he leaves that job to deliver newspaper and
magazines for a different store. Through all his hardships Frank McCourt follows his dream to
go to America after raising enough money to go by working, some stealing and saving. Overall,
the memoir was well written and the reader will be unable to put it down. I would recommend
this book to any reader looking to discover a classic. Angelas Ashes is a memoir about the
hardships in life and how that once you have hit rock bottom you can only go

Why Is Medea Wrong
In the play Medea , written by Euripides, we are presented with the story of the ex princess of
Colchis who was once happily married to the king of Iolcus, Jason. While they are still married,
they are far from happy. King Jason has made the decision to abandon his wife and two children to
marry the king of Corinth s daughter, Glauce. Medeais very angered and pained by Jasons actions
and decides they only way to bear this grief is to hurt Jason as deeply as he hurt her. I find Medea s
decision to cause Jason pain to be acceptable but how she does it to be unacceptable.
Creon, the king of Corinth, anticipates Medea s wrath and plans to send her into exile with the
children. In an attempt to remain out of exile, Medea meets with Aegeus, King of Athens. He
explains that despite his marriage to his wife he is without children. Medea explains her current
situation to him and begs him to allow her to remain in the country in exchange for her providing
him with drugs to end his infertility. With her new found freedom Medea decides that killing
Jason s fiancГ©, the King of Colchis (Glauce s father), and their two children is the best way to
cause Jason pain but I do not agree. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I can t even imagine how Medea must have felt after being abandoned by the man whose
children she bared and loved. I cannot fault Jason or be disgusted with him because I do not
know what was happening in their home. Medea could have been treating Jason poorly or
maybe Jason just realized that he no longer loved Medea but what I do know is that Jason told
Medea he is marrying Glauce because he could not pass up the opportunity to marry a royal
princess while he is married to a barbarian woman. While that confession must have broken Medea
s heart there is no excuse for murdering your own children and two royal

Indus River Valley Research Paper
The Indus River Valley is the best civilization out of Mesopotamia, Egypt, China, and of course
the Indus River Valley. I think this and believe this for many reasons. One reason is that the Indus

There are some other things that the Indus River Valley created.
The Indus River Valley created a sewer system. They were the first civilizationto have a system
like this. This helped keep their city a lot cleaner than it was without one. It really helped because
their system was underground. This is one of the reasons I think the Indus River Valley is the best.
I also think the Indus River Valley is the most outstanding because they had a huge grain

Viral Respiratory Tract Infections ( Vrtis )
Introduction
Viral respiratory tract infections (VRTIs) are the most common illness in humans according to
Fendrick (2004). Acute respiratory infections kill approximately 4 million people per year.
Approximately half of these respiratory infections are due to viruses. Respiratory infections are one
of the top causes of mortality throughout the world. In many developing nations they are the major
cause of death in young children (WHO 2013). Often referred to as the common cold, the term
upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) is used to describe acute viral infections involving upper
airway structures including the nose, paranasal sinuses, pharynx, larynx, trachea and bronchi.

Because URTIs are primarily viral use of antibiotics is not recommended.
According to Fendrick (2004) there are 110 million physician visits and 23.2 million physician
telephone calls in the United States yearly regarding VRTI and an estimated 6 million emergency
department visits for the cold occur annually. 69% of those with colds will self medicate with an
over the counter (OTC) product, they receive an estimated 41 million unnecessary prescriptions for
antibiotics at a cost of 1.1 billion dollars annually and spend 400 million on prescriptions for
symptomatic therapies annually. Additionally Americans spend almost 3 billion annually on OTC
medications for relief of symptoms related to URIs.
According to WHO (2010) up to 60% of people with viral upper respiratory tract infections
receive antibiotics inappropriately and the overuse of antibiotics increases antimicrobial resistance.
Antimicrobial resistance may extend illnesses and also increase the length of stay and number of
hospital admissions. The associated costs of this resistance is estimated to be approximately 4 to 5
billion dollars in the United States each year and approximately 9 billion euros per year in Europe.
Peterson (2007) states that one possible reason for continued high rates of antibiotic prescribing for
viral illness is patient expectation of receiving a prescription for antibiotics and fears that
complications will

  • 4. The Code Of Silence Essays The Code of Silence Some argue that corrupt police officers are simply the product of a corrupt culture of the agency they work for. These officers are socially introduced to a number of informal rules when they begin employment. This process and these rules serve two main purposes. First, this process is designed to minimize the chances of external or internal controls being mobilized to address the behaviors and, secondly, to keep corrupt activities at a level that is acceptable and likely undetectable. The rule most often referred to in this connection, is the Code of Silence. Officers are socialized into not cooperating with investigations regarding fellow officers. Whether or not the officer participates in corrupt activities for financial gain, an officer s adherence to the Code of Silence places them squarely amongst the corrupt of the profession (Price, 1972). Some officers feel that discussing police transgressions regarding behavior or expressing worries about corruption makes them appear weak or soft . Some officers are uncertain whether certain gifts, such as flowers from a citizen saying thank you to an officer, are appropriate to accept (Westmarland, 2005). This uncertainty on the part of officers contributes to the Code of Silence that at times appears to be present in law enforcement. The Code of Silence is not simply something which applies only to the patrol officer or the officer that does not hold rank within the department. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Internal Domain Name System for Company Internal Domain Name System for Company Alpha Introduction The DNS is a vital Internet component providing mechanisms for resolving host names into IP addresses and vice versa. In addition, DNS supports other Internet directories concerning DNS name servers and mail exchangers among others (Garfinkel Spafford, 1997). Despite being a universally accepted and widely used system, insecure protocols and lack of authentication among other factors within the DNS threaten proper functionality of the DNS. Moreover, the accuracy of the information contained within the DNS is vital to many aspects of IP based communications. Domain Model for the Organization The domain appropriate for this organization is the Berkeley Internet Name Domain (BIND). This domain name is selected since it compatible with most operating systems including UNIX; it is also used by most Internet Service Providers (Stevens, 1990). In addition, BIND is recommended for the firm since its configuration files are easier to maintain than other server DNSs such as Sendmail (Terry, Painter, Riggle, Zhou, 1984). Using this DNS, cache only name servers are easily placed strategically within the internal network to remove unwanted traffic and expensive WAN links. Moreover, BIND supports DNS SEC, TSIG IPv4 among other DNS protocol enhancements. Given the popularity of BIND, it is often targeted by hackers. Therefore, limiting zone transfers to slave name servers and limiting transfer in the zone can reduce the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Characteristics Of Martin Luther King Jr. And Adolf Hitler Before this semester I always knew there were many characteristics and deferent types of leaders. Typically when I thought of a leader, I would think of a team leader. A leader that involves the creation of a vivid picture of its goals, where it is heading and what it will stand for. The vision inspires and provides a strong sense of purpose and direction. In the easy sense when I thought of a leader I would think of a quarterback for a football team, commander in the army, and or a bossof a company. I also knew there was a visionary leader because that s what type of leader I am. When I think of whose a good leader I think of two people, Martin Luther King Jr. and Adolf Hitler. These two people were two totally different leaders but they were both great leaders. Martin Luther Kind JR. led the Civil Rights movements in the United States. He used nonviolent, or peaceful, protest to try to get equal rights for African Americans. He aroused white and black alike to protest racial discrimination, poverty, and war. He would give amazing speeches such as I have a dream in front of 250,000 people. Hitler was a good leader but obviously was a terrible person. Hitler turned hundred of thousands of people into Nazis. Some key areas that Hitler was good at was his vision, change management, compassion, charisma, and develop the team and making the team better. • 8. Summary Of Margaret Atwood s The Victory Burlesk Madeleine Davies had once said that Margaret Atwood s female bodies are inevitably coded bodies that tell the story of the subject s experience within a political economy that seeks to consume them, convert them into consumers in turn, shrink them, neutralize them, silence them, and contain them physically or metaphorically. (Davies 60). In Margaret Atwood s short story, The Victory Burlesk, Atwood is showing just that; Atwood is demonstrating how a womanis shrunken, silenced, and contained. This short story is bringing attention to how people feel shamefor women in realization of reality, and how there is a focus on the Good Woman and the Bad Woman , how Bad Woman are represented. The Victory Burlesk is a story in which a woman is on stage and reveals herself as an elderly woman, putting on a show for one another to watch, a show in which people in the audience began to feel shame about. I could feel shame washing through me. (Atwood 20 21), there is a woman on the stage, making herself vulnerable for everyone to see, and yet others are shameful in this situation. Why do others feel shame? Because there is a realization that this woman is real. That that is a actual body up there, one that no one wants to sexualize anymore due to her age and appearance. But also because they are not properly showing the representation of how women are shown on stage. Difference can make one feel uncomfortable, to the point they feel shame for another person. These two types of conditioning are often misinterpreted by many individuals; therefore, it is important to distinguish the two. Learning the different ways animals function and the new behaviors they adapt to are of interest to both Ivan Pavlov and Edward Thorndike. .Sex differences are measured and taken in consideration in both kinds of conditioning processes. ... Another form of punishment is when a behavior ends on a desirable event. An example of this is when a boy pulls his sister s hair and is given a time out, which has lost his privilege to watch TV. The boy has learnt a lesson because he won t dare to even touch his sister s hair remembering he had lost his privilege to watch TV. Classical conditioning deals with involuntary responses, primarily involving emotions, whereas, operant conditioning deals with voluntary responses that are active behaviors operating within the environment. Compared to operant conditioning, classical conditioning is more passive because in operant conditioning, learners are either getting rewarded for something or punished for something, which keeps the process active. Organisms experience a consequence despite of the fact they have learned the conditioned response. On the other hand, in operant conditioning, the consequence is dependent on the likelihood of the organism reacting to the response. Khawaja 5 Running head: DISTINCTIONS BETWEEN CLASSICAL AND OPERANT CONDITIONING How do you determine the type of conditioning, whether it is classical or operant? He looked into the water and saw that it was made up of a thousand thousand thousand and one currents, each one a different colour, weaving in and out of one another like a liquid tapestry of breathtaking complexity; and Iff explained that these were the Streams of Story, that each coloured strand represented and contained a single tale. The passage personifies the ocean by talking of its playful nature of the currents weaving in and out of one another and its ability to change, as it has a mind of its own. The last sentence within the passage states it was not dead but alive the use of short sentencing emphasised its point and indicates its importance. However this short verse changes the mood of the passage, the reader is confronted by the abrupt word dead this single word changes the tone of the sentence and explores that along with the capability to be alive there also is the capability to be dead. This foreshadows the next passage and the future of the ocean. Within the passage the metaphor of the ocean being a library is emphasised, it states that it is the biggest library in the universe this metaphor is used to try and example the extent of the sea and how many stories it possesses, connecting it to a familiar idea for the reader. However the metaphor is later contradicted renouncing the oceans likeness to a library of books due to the fluid form of the stories and their changing nature and ability to become new versions and to join up with other stories. It presents the ocean to be much more. This is revisited throughout the novel, exampling how the ocean is much more and how it is a health source to plentimaws fish, directly impacting them as the ocean becomes more toxic, as well as a way of life to all members of gup city. Is American Football Better Than Rugby American Football is better than Rugby because in Football there are four chances to get a first down and run down the field to get a touchdown and makes the game more exciting when the teams try to get a first down and it makes players able to make amazing plays. American Football is a game where there are two teams with an offense, who are trying to score a touchdown by either running the ball, or throwing the ball into the endzone to get a touchdown while the defense are trying to stop them. The objective of the game is to be the team with the most points. The Offense has a quarterback who is trying to either throw the ball to the Wide Receiver or anyone else that is open. Along with the rule changes came the line of scrimmage and the down distance. Along with a couple other guys, Camp helped create the forward pass play. Rugby is a sport where the objective is to carry or kick the ball towards the other team s goal. This is called a try. One team can run forward and only pass the ball backwards and sideways. The play can keep going on if someone is tackled, either they throw it or they pass the ball to one of their teammates. The attacking has a total of six tackles before a possession is changed. • 15. Quadratic Formula Research Paper Completing the square is use to prove the quadratic formula. Given ax^2+bx+c=0 we first have to make the coefficient of x^2 to be one. We divided the original formula by a: x^2+b/c x+c/a=0/a since 0/a we still have our quadratic equation. Subtract that c/a in both sides: x^2+b/c x+c/a c/a= c /a remember that b/a is b/2(a) now we will have to add it to the root of two: x^2+b/a x+b^2/(4a^2 )=b^2/(4a^2 ) c/a next is to set up our denominators to be the same we should have (x+b /2a)^2=b^2/(4a^2 ) 4ac/(4a^2 ) now that our denominators are the same we need to combine like terms: (b^2 4ac)/(4a^2 ) in this step it resembles somewhat a part of the quadratic formula but we still missing more steps. The axis of symmetry has been found also which is where the x of the vertex is meaning that it is x=1/4. We will now find where does it increases and decreases, this should be easy now that we have our vertex and knowledge that all quadratic equations are parabolas. We know that the domain is ( в€ ћ,в€ ћ) any line coming from the negative side it will decrease while the positive side will increase. Then the side that is decreasing will stop to decrease at ( в€ ћ,1/4), it will then begin to increase at (1/4,в€ ћ). This time we are finding the x and y intercept, beginning with the x intercept we are going to use the discriminant of the quadratic equation which is b^2 4ac. Plugging the numbers, it will be ( 1)^2 4(2)(2) the solution will be a negative fifteen. The rule of a discriminant is that there cannot be negative numbers for x, this time there are no x intercept. the x intercept does not exist we will replace it with a zero so the y intercept can be found, by plugging the numbers y=2(0)^2 0+2 we will have the answer of y=2. The quadratic equation will be crossing the y intercept at (0,2). Now writing the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 16. Amadeus Conflict Essay I believe the central conflict in Amadeus is Salieri s jealousy towards Mozart. Salieri really admires Mozart and his outstanding music even though Mozart is a few years younger than him. Salieri begins to feel envy and jealousy towards Mozart when Mozart enters the emperor s palace and calls one of Salieri s old songs a funny little tune. Mozart then proceeds to point out the flaws in the piece and explains how Salieri could improve his piece making Salieri question why God had blessed someone like Mozart with such talent. In the following scene, we learn that Prince Elizabeth, the emperor s niece, needs a tutor. The emperor immediately thinks of Mozart but Salieri being the envious individual that he is turns the idea down quickly and suggests that he should have people apply for the position instead. Mozart refuses to apply for the position so his wife Constanze decides to take matters into her own hands and goes and speaks to Salieri; Salieri is part of the committee who reviews applications for Prince Elizabeth s tutor. Race is the one thing that surrounds us and helps form us without even thinking. People don t think twice about judging someone and guessing their race. It happens naturally now when you first look or meet someone. Racealso is involved with a variety of values, assumption, and historical meaning. That explains why people who don t believe in stereotypes can easily recite them. In the 1900s, deciding who was an american and who was not was a significant thing that was going on. The film states, Whiteness was not just being a skin color, to be white was to gain the full rewards of american citizenship. In other words, if you weren t considered white, you lived a struggled life. The ideal thing in the 1900s was to be considered white because that is when you were able to have the most opportunities and do something for family. The film also explains that in 1909 courts and legislators would determine who was white. People started question how the would work out in the sufficient way but the problem was that different states would consider different things. For example, In Virginia you were considered black if you had 1/16 of black in you. While in Florida it was 1/8 but Alabama considered you black if you had any black in you. In other words people could walk across a state line and change race. Therefore, people question what is the main criteria for being American . The film states that you would have to gain full rewards of american citizenship to be considered white and it had to be decided through a judge. This leads to a large amount of flaws. For instance, in 1915 Leo Frank, a jew in atlanta was pulled from jail and hung for killing a white girl. People started to question what was white and if a Jew could be considered a white man. People who were seen as non american were seen as the enemy. They strip them of their civil liberties and put them in internment camps. • 29. Theme Of Naturalism In The Open Boat Naturalism in The Open Boat Naturalism is an outgrowing literary movement from realism, a more specific writing method. The literature network states, Naturalism sought to go further and be more explanatory than Realism by identifying the underlying causes for a person s actions or beliefs (Naturalism). Naturalism is used to explain more of the natural occurring events and social behaviors, the characters behavior and believes. One of the first and leading writers to use this literary method was Stephen Crane. Crane s famous story, The Open Boat , is a perfect example of a naturalist piece of writing work. In the story, the characters are four men; The Captain, The Cook, The Correspondent, and The Oiler. The four men were initially travelling in a ship called the SS Commodore, when they hit a sandbar and the ship sank. The four men must travel in a small boat, in a terrible storm in the middle of the sea for more than 30 hours, trying to row their way to a lifesaving station in an island. The devastating days leave the four men to accept the fact that they might not make it home at the end of the day, but they do not have any control over their situation. Therefore, they only have one choice which is to accept their fate, and this story is based on a real life experience Crane had. Crane starts by describing how the four men have not seen a clear blue sky in days, and in fact, they did not remember what a cloudless sky looks like. The readers can feel that the four men are tired and losing hope as they keep rowing throughout their days. Crane describes and makes the readers understand how each character is contemplating their life threatening situation. The setting emphasizes devastation: The correspondent, pulling at the other oar, watched the waves and wondered why he was there... (Crane). Crane uses naturalism by describing how bad the weather was and how it is affecting them. He also emphasizes naturalism by having them realize that fate has chosen their path, and nature is taking its own course Crane uses two conflicts in the story, and the most natural one is Man vs. Nature, the external conflict. Crane utilizes naturalism with this conflict to make the reader understand that men have no power over ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Lowe was an integral part in the success of the aeronautics division of the war and paved the way for the world s future success in many other fields. Thaddeus Lowe s work was greatly under appreciated. He and other aeronauts proved time and time again just how useful balloons could be, but, the work of Wise, Lowe, Steiner, and other aeronauts as observers should have stirred up enthusiasm for balloons as military weapons, but neither the Army nor the American public properly appreciated the potential of aeronautics (Scamehorn 9). This never stopped Lowe from pursuing his dream. He fought to make ends meet by taking odd jobs so he could finance his education in physics and other subjects that would eventually set him up for his success in aeronautics. Through his persistent work, at thirty years of age, Thaddeus Lowe had organized an aeronautics corps for the Union Army something that only a handful of people wanted to see happen at the time (Military Intelligence Corps Hall of Fame). Having gained the support of a few key figures, Lowe ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Sir Gawain Archetype The common archetype of the knight is seen as Christian and chivalric, yet by the end of the text, Gawain is neither. The narrative begins by portraying Gawain as the epitome of medieval chivalric values, being respectful towards Arthur and Gweniviere. However, by the end of the text, we quickly realise his morals are not so clear cut, as he lies and steals from his host. In fact, it is suggested that Gawainis neither Christian nor chivalric, characteristics tested within the Green chapel. Christianity held a central position within Medieval society, its importance being highlighted with the Green Chapel. This location tests Gawain s morals and ultimately brings to light his cowardice and misogynistic attitude after he is forced to realise ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Before finding the castle, he prays to Mary that ho him rede to ride And whose him to sum wone primarily because he wishes for somewhere to go to church and partake in mass. Mary is a repeated figure within the poem, appearing on the inside of his shield so he can glance at her when he requires guidance and strength. Yet, in later parts of the tale, this appears ironic, as Mary is associated with loyalty and virginity. Gawain was hardly loyal to the promise he made with his host, refusing to give away the girdle breaking the essential chivalric laws. Furthermore, as we learn that Gawain is experienced in lufttalking it becomes apparent that he may not be as sexually pure as we are lead to believe. This provides another aspect on Gawain, as the fashionable wealthy man of promiscuous pursuits. These hidden values of his directly contradict both Christian values of purity and chivalric values of respect, illustrating him as the unknightly knight. However, his status of a knight could be solely due to his own birth, as he is King Arthur s nephew. Therefore, we can assume that he did not suffer through any trials or perform any great deed in order to assert his status as a knight. This could potentially be the reason as to why his morals are less than perfect, and it could also be possible that this trial is his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Globalization Of Dreams And Its Effects On Dreams Globalization of Dreams The focus of this study is to continue previous research relating the significance of cultures and dreams. These studies have set out to show what how much of an effect culture has on dreams. To measure this, other researchers have recorded participants typical dreams. These studies have helped us to understand some of the differences in beliefs, values, and structure of other cultures as well as the differences and similarities. Through analyzing the differences and similarities of our various cultures we learn what humans share in values as a whole and how our society influences our thinking and actions. By interviewing two people from two different collectivistic cultures, there should be a great deal of similarities between the two. Any differences recorded found will be derived from individual perspectives rather than culture. The goal of the research is to show culture doesn t heavily influence our dreams but rather individual perceptions of the world around them do. There isn t a significant difference in typical dreams between cultures, rather researchers tend to agree that culture doesn t have much of an effect on dreams and it has more to do with our individual perception of our day (Jaenicke 2009). In Griffith, Miyago, and Tago s (1958) study of The Universality of Typical Dreams: Japanese vs. Americans, statistics showed out of the 34 typical dreams compared between the two, 14 held a significant difference of a .01 confidence ... In doing this, the research is focused on the potential psychological and behaviour outcomes that result from customer interaction with visual merchandising, rather than directly trying to establish what constitutes best practice per se or manipulating visual merchandising techniques themselves. The context chosen for investigation is female fashion in the UK. This particular retail sector was chosen as it has recently elevated visual merchandising to an issue of board level concern (Lea Greenwood, 1998). Given this situation the sector affords an ideal context in which to investigate the impact of such cues on customers, as the degree of retailer sophistication in this area is likely to be higher than that displayed by organisations in other sectors. Within the female fashion sector the department store was selected as the specific venue for investigation. This is because it offers distinctive merchandising possibilities for a number of brands both retail and clothing based. Here, the retail brands are derived from those stores that source and display own brand assortments, and the clothing based brands stem from either a manufacturing or design base. Within the department store these brands are merchandised within their own concessions in a way that holds a number of extraneous variables constant for example, building type or specific shop location. This makes the use of such a research context advantageous as it minimises the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 43. Causes Of Racism In America The United States of America is a country that was built on the very principles of liberty, freedom, and prosperity, as well as discrimination and racism. Thomas Paine, a prominent English writer who supported the American Revolution, argued that America was among the best nations in the entire world. He believed that the government was completely fair, that tolerance existed in all parts of the country, and that America was the land of diversity. His claims, although seemingly positive, are not completely consistent with the history nor status of this nation today. The tolerance and freedom in this country was achieved at a very high cost. Although America is a democracy and its citizens are widely diverse, it is also a place of bigotry and political unsettlement. Despite the fact that America has made significant progress towards tolerance and acceptance, this country still today struggles with politics and has unresolved issues with the government. Racism has been a drag within the us of America for a protracted time, qualitative analysis back to early America once the Native Americans were typically attacked, relocated, and forcibly assimilated into European culture. • 45. How Hemingway Has Too Strong Opinions On Homosexuality Hemingway has extremely strong opinions on homosexuality, which Gertrude Stein attempts to dissuade by convincing him that those who attempt to assault young boys are not well in their heads. While Stein attempts this, Hemingway proclaims that because homosexuality exists, you [carry] a knife and would use it when you were in the company of tramps when you were a boy in the days when wolves was not a slang term for men obsessed by the pursuit of women (Hemingway 16). It seems that Hemingway does not realize that, when objectifying women, he turns into one of the wolves of which he is so afraid. However, Hemingway maintains his fear of homosexuality; he ridicules an effeminate homosexual named Hal, satirizes Fitzgerald s sexual uncertainties, and professes disgust at the lesbian practices of Stein and Toklas (Kennedy 187). Hemingway is horrified by homosexuals, because he is afraid that he will be objectified by homosexual men just as he objectifies the women in his own life. He believes that leering after unsuspecting partners is only okay when he is an active participant; he is just afraid of being objectified and therefore, forced into an action against his own will. However, homosexuality disturbs Hem, less because it involves alternate erotic practices than because it subvert his fundamental assumptions about sex, gender, and desire (Kennedy 191). He believes that men are only right to objectify, not to be objectified. He believes that the gender and sexual ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 46. The Japanese Castles And Power During The Nineteenth Century To understand the Japanese castles, one must immerse in history of the country. Japan despite a very different culture, like the old continent, also had a medieval time. Different regions were then divided into small entities over which ruled a local lord. The equivalence would be Dukes or Counts. The Emperor of divine ancestry, could be seen as the Pope while the Shogun was in charge of the power of the reigning emperor. This feudal system then required to have stronghold, but it is only with the unification of the country that the real castles were built in the very short period of a few decades, at the end the sixteenth century. Those castles experienced a very rapid peak with stabilization over several decades to finally be nearly all destroyed before being rebuilt in the twentieth century. Before the nineteenth century, two clans battle for the seizure of power during the Heian period (794 1185): the Minamoto clan and the Taira clan. Between 1180 and 1185, Japan went through a great civil war with the final victory of the Minamoto clan. During this period, the power of the emperor was still strong. Japan then enters its feudal phase called the Kamakura period, from 1185 to 1333. The emperor was not playing much than a passive role in the management of the country, mainly present for ceremonies. • 47. Introduction to Noise and Vibration Damping INTRODUCTION TO NOISE AND VIBRATION DAMPING Vibrations are undesirable for structures, due to the need for structural stability, position control, durability, performance, and noise reduction. Vibrations are concern to large structures such as aircraft and small structures such as electronics. Reduction of Vibration can be attained by increasing damping capacity and increasing the stiffness. The loss modulus is the product of these two quantities and thus can be considered a figure of merit for the vibration reduction ability. Structural damping can be achieved by passive or active methods. Passive methods use the inherent ability of certain materials (it can be structural or non structural materials) to absorb the vibrational energy (example, through mechanical deformation), which provides passive energy dissipation. An active method uses sensors and actuators to attain vibration sensing and activation to suppress the vibration in real time. The sensors and actuators are usually piezoelectric devices. This review is focused on materials for passive damping, due to its relatively low cost and ease of implementation Materials for vibration damping are mainly metals and polymers, due to their viscoelastic character. Rubber is commonly used as a vibration damping material due to its viscoelasticity. Though, viscoelasticity is not the only mechanism for damping. Defects such as dislocations, phase boundaries, grain boundaries and various interfaces also contribute to damping, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
