Smart Foods: Good for you, Good for the planet, Important for food security a...ICRISAT
Grains such as millet (including sorghum), amaranth, buckwheat, quinoa are ancient grains used since antiquity.
They are highly nutritious, gluten-free and rich in fiber and minerals. Millets are not only good for us, but
they are also good for the planet – use less water, and are climate-ready – can withstand high
temperatures expected with climate change.
Millets are often the only crops that can grow in the dryland regions of the world. They act as a last
resort for the farmer, since they can even survive in drought conditions. Millets and sorghum are
among the mandate crops of ICRISAT, the others being pigeonpea, chickpea and groundnut which also
survive in semi-arid regions under extreme conditions.
The ‘big 3’ crops (wheat, maize and rice) receive most attention and support for research and development
and are increasingly dominant in the minds of government, industry and consumers. We believe that
millets and sorghum are under-recognized for their value and are important for diversification and
complementing other foods. In particular, they are critical for both farmers and consumers because of:
high nutritional value
resilience under extreme weather conditions – critical in future with climate change
need for both on-farm and diet diversity
multiple untapped uses.
A globalized diet now exists and there are trends in
developing countries where more nutritious and
smart foods like millets and legumes are sometimes
seen as ‘food for the poor’ and not as status foods or
crops by consumers or farmers. Thus, only a few
crops dominate both our dining tables as well as farms.
To correct this trend ICRISAT has launched the Smart
Foods campaign where we aim to partner with
organizations globally to create a demand for these
ancient grains thus benefiting the farmer, the
consumer and the planet.

FOODS THAT ARE HIGH IN FIBRE FOR HEALTHY METABOLISMAyurvedGuru
Fibre is an important part of a balanced diet, and it is important for the healthy functioning of the gut. It is a non-digestible plant-derived carbohydrate. It can further be divided into two parts: soluble and insoluble. Soluble fibre mixes with water from the food you eat. Insoluble fibre, also known as roughage, helps us in the excretion process. Insoluble fibre doesn’t break in our intestines. Ayurveda gives utmost importance to healthy passing of stool.

14 HIGH-FIBER FOODS THAT HELP YOU LOSE WEIGHTSteven Rhyner

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

3. Fish
A 3-ounce cooked serving of halibut contains 242 milligrams of phosphorus. Salmon has 252
milligrams per 3-ounce serving. These contain about one-third of your daily recommended
amount of phosphorus per serving. Other fish such as cod, tuna, sardines and whiting are all
high in phosphorus as well.
4. Meat
Beef and turkey contain the same amount of
phosphorus, 173 milligrams per 3-ounce
serving. Chicken has slightly less with 155
milligrams per serving. Each serving of meat
has about 25 percent of the daily
recommended amount of phosphorus. This
source of phosphorus is more easily used in
the body.
5. Nuts and Beans
Beans are the best non-animal food source of
phosphorus. Lentils have 178 milligrams per
one-half-cup serving. A 1-ounce serving of
almonds has 134 milligrams, and a serving of
peanuts has 107 milligrams. Phosphorus found
in plant products is found in a form called
phytate. Only about 50 percent of this form of
phosphorus can be absorbed, since phytate
competes for the same absorption site and
reduces the amount absorbed. Vitamin D
increases the absorption of this form of
phosphorus. Because of this, animal products
high in phosphorus are better sources of
phosphorus than plant products.
6. Whole Grains
Two slices of whole-wheat bread contain 128 milligrams of phosphorus. One packet of plain
instant oats contains 96 milligrams of phosphorus and cream of wheat contains 95 milligrams
per cup. Whole-grain products that contain yeast are more bioavailable and richer in
phosphorus than whole-grain products without yeast.
7. Cottage Cheese or Cheddar -

10. Broccoli -
Broccoli is also a phosphorus rich food. In addition, it brings a wealth of health resources that
green vegetables are generally known for, including antioxidants for fighting toxins in the body
as well as vitamin C. Some nutritional experts recommend eating green vegetables like broccoli
in a raw form rather than boiled, as some of their vitamins and minerals are more concentrated
prior to cooking.
11. Chicken and Turkey
- Both of these contain phosphorus and a lean meat choice can be a good addition to some
personal diets.
12. Sunflower Seeds -
These little snacks also deliver phosphorus and are fun to eat, although discarding the shells can
sometimes mean a lot to clean up afterward.
13. Garlic -
Phosphorus is only one of the healthy elements in this historically popular plant that has been
used so extensively in southern European cultures to provide both flavor and nutrition in daily
cuisine.

24. Legumes and Nuts
- In addition to peanut butter, other nuts such as almonds, brazil nuts, and cashews all contain a

perishable forms, can be a good solution for getting nutritional elements like phosphorus into a
diet when refrigeration and easy food storage are difficult.
25. Cashew Nut
The sweet taste, delicate flavor and high nutritional value of cashew nut make it one of the most
