Paris today is known as the city of lights. Full of opportunity and adventure, this city has a wonderful
reputation as an amazing home to some and tourist attraction to others. There are many facets of the
city that have helped to build the great reputation that Paris holds, and if it was not for the rich history
that this city has, it would not be the admirable city that it is today. Throughout the late 18th and 19th

Napoleon III was still in power, but during this time, Paris transformed into the Paris that many know
today. In Emile Zola s The Belly of Paris, is set in Les Halles, which is the central market in Paris
during the 19th century. A major theme in this novel which also helps to describe how Paris changes
during this century is the struggle between the fat and the thin. Unlike today, Paris viewed fat people
as wealthy and privileged, because they were obviously able to afford luxurious foods. Thin people,
on the contrary, were viewed as poverty stricken people who could not afford to eat. Zola describes
the main character, Florent: No, hunger had never left him. He wracked his brains, but could not recall
a single moment when his stomach had felt full. He had become dry and withered; his stomach
seemed to have shrunk; his skin clung to his bones (Zola 12). Unfortunately, 19th century Paris had a
large divide between the rich and the poor and it was visible by how fat or thin people were. Although
Florent had just arrived in Paris after escaping his arrest, this quote perfectly describes how poverty
affected society in 19th century Paris. In addition, this novel also helps to describe the terrible
working and living conditions of the poor during this time. A particular family s living conditions is
described: It was in the cellars under the poultry market that they found a way of continuing to sleep
together. Near the slaughtering blocks were some big baskets of feather in which they could stretch
out... Usually they would drag their basket away from the gaslight; they were alone in the strong smell
of poultry, kept awake by the sudden crowning of the cocks in the dark (Zola 161). This couple went
to what seems to be the ends of the earth to find a somewhat comfortable sleeping situation, although

Nebraska Analysis
When you pick up the 1982 album, Nebraska, you get little to no indication of Bruce Springsteen
other than his name emboldened in blood red capital letters across the front. You won t find a smirking
Dylan esque portrait like the album that came before it, or a baseball cap hanging from his blue jean
pocket like the album that came after it. The black and white photo of a sprawling country landscape
coupled with the contrasting red text immediately gives the feeling of despondence. If anything, this

The major key and faster tempo combined with the brighter/higher vocal range creates a more hopeful
sound. Despite that, though, the imagery used is more graphic than the opening song, Nebraska, as
