The Effects Of Methylphenidate On Children And Youth
Methylphenidate, commonly known as Ritalin was synthesized in 1944 (U.S. Pharmacist, 2002). By
1954, it was being tested on humans to treat: chronic fatigue, depression, psychosis associated with
depression, narcolepsy, and to offset the sedating effects of other medications. (U.S. Pharmacist, 2002)
The interest to use Ritalin to treat the hyperkinetic syndrome. (U.S. Pharmacist, 2002) Which later
was called Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) wasn t introduced until the 1960s. Many
studies have been conducted in order to determine the effects it has on the brain as well as, the
tolerance, dependence, and withdrawal with being prescribed Ritalin. Within these studies, the
effectiveness of Ritalin on children and youth ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was reported that 51% of males that took Ritalin compared to the 24% that did not, commit self
harm (cutting, burning, poison or overdose) or had suicidal tendencies. With the report being high it
was a clear conclusion that the prescription of Ritalin did have a risk factor with being diagnosis with
ADHD. Furthermore, anti social behaviour, depression and anxiety (Bushe, 2013) were found in
associated with self harm. Ritalin might not have any negative physical health found at this time but it
does have mental health association that impact the population affected with ADHD and more studies
should be conducted long term to see the full effect of this over prescribed drug to youth. With Ritalin
being prescribed to youth as young as age three (DeNoon, 2006) it can be determined that parents and
educators will do anything to medicate children that may be prone to accidents or behavioural issues
because of their hyperactivity and age. Greenhill, a psychiatry professor at Columbia University and
director of paediatric psychopharmacology at New York State (DeNoon, 2006) stated that medicating
preschoolers does have their benefits: They have difficult peer relationships due to lack of reciprocity
and perhaps aggression. And they are very prone to accidents. Many of them were attending
emergency rooms with cuts and bruises and broken bones, because their fearlessness and activity level
made life dangerous

America s Decision to Drop the Atomic Bomb Essay
Perhaps the most controversial and heavily scrutinized issue of the twentieth century was President
Harry Truman s decision to unleash atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the summer of 1945.
While the sequence of events preceding that fateful summer morning of August 6,1945 are fully
understood, the motives behind Truman s actions are shrouded in controversy. Top military officials
publicly denounced the use of such a horrendous weapon, while the obvious advantages to the bomb,
traditionalists argue, was a shortened Pacific War. Parallactic views between traditional beliefs and
revisionist theories suggest that the issue is still very much unresolved. Why is the issue so hotly
debated? Partially because of the overwhelming ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In addition: The Japanese army was already training its civilians to fight with sharpened bamboo
poles...[By] using sharpened pikes the Japanese could easily prevent a military government from
being effective in those towns which the U.S. captured. The real predicament involving the invasion of
Japan was the fierce resistance expected during and after the assault.
Because of such drastic Japanese resistance, it would not only be impractical, it would be senseless to
launch an attempt to invade and occupy Japan. Thus, dropping the atomic bomb was a military
necessity in order to prevent a disastrous and precarious land invasion.
By avoiding a highly questionable land invasion, the bomb saved half a million American lives. In his
personal diary, Truman wrote, General Marshall told me that it might cost half a million American
lives to force the enemy s surrender on his home grounds. This estimate was based on previous battle
figures at Okinawa, where Americans suffered 50,000 casualties despite outnumbering the Japanese
by two and a half to one.
Indeed, if Truman opted to

Rise And Fall Of The Civil Rights Summary
The beginning of, KKK The Rise and Fall of the Civil Rights , starts off with the opening of a KKK
rally happening in Raleigh North Carolina, on August, 14, 1966. Bob Jones, one of the major klan
leaders, was a speaker at that day. Jones was born right outside of Charlotte, North Carolina, he was a
high school dropout, and not soon after a discharged from the navy for not saluting a black officer.
Next, the presentation draws our attention to a battle scene of the Civil War, during this time is when
the organization was born. A group of soldiers from Tennessee would pose as dead confederate
soldiers and terrorized newly freed slaves. Throwing them over bridges, torturing, and hanging them.
Throughout history the KKK would rise in numbers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At his first over 2000 people showed up, which later would turn into the hundreds of thousands. While
he was traveling, he recruited minister Dorset who became the klans priest at every event. Dorset and
Jones became a deadly duo. The Andy Griffith show was a representation of what North Carolina
thought of itself, co existing with blacks. Never had anything to say, just went along with the whites
peacefully. During this time in the 60 s, NC had become the new south moving out of its racial period.
They didn t want to really change, but would gradually take steps forward just to say they were doing
more than everybody else in the south.
But this wasn t enough for blacks, in 64 the civil rights movement revved up once again. The KKK
supported the traditionalist idea, and spoke for the people being left out of the new south . BJ started
his political gatherings again, only whites aloud. During the day, there would be rides, food,
entertainment, and more, but, at night they would bring out the klans speakers. Dorset targeted and
manipulated the religious crowd of the small country towns into further believing in what they were
already thinking, through religion, justifying racism, and it

Justification Of Moral Obligation On The Suffering Of...
What reasons might someone give for caring more about the suffering of people close by than that of
those far away? Do these reasons give moral justification for this stance?
The question that will be answered within this essay asks why, if justifiable, someone might give
preferential care to the suffering of a collective group what are within closer distance than a collective
who may be a large distance away. In this essay, I will offer some reasons for why this might be, and
attempt to find reason to justify them with reference to external material which tries to find reason and
argument about whether this stance can be morally accepted among applied ethical issues. This essay
will be split into two main parts, consisting of two intertwining reasons followed by my reasoning for
justification of this moral stance. I will argue that regardless of moral obligation I believe that we are
more justified to care for people closer by, this will be the primary argument of this essay.
A reason one might give to only helping someone close, with my assumption that close means people
within the same society or social contract as the person rescuing, is that as agents within this contract,
we have negative rights. Negative rights are liberties that one has, meaning that they are not obligated,
but freely allowed to do something within reason. We could void these negative rights if we believe
they will benefit our society or community, and should be influenced to do so, but

Chief Seattle Speech Summary
Two great chiefs, Tecumseh and Seattle, attempted to address the U.S. government s negligence
against the Native American tribes, who preceded the very men who ignore their needs. Chief Seattle
delivers a speech to President Pierce in 1855, and in it contrasts nature and artificial cities. There is no
quiet place in man s cities, no place to hear the leaves of spring or the rustle of insect wings. But
perhaps because I am a savage and do not understand, the clatter only seems to insult the ears.
(Seattle). He uses imagery to describe the delicacy of nature to the crude artificialness of man s cities ,
and provide a greater understanding of how their lives differ. Chief Seattle knows that the President,
just like all other white me, has preconceptions about Native Americans. He most likely believes them
to be too simplistic for white society, and even more so fears them. He already knows that white men
perceive them as savages and acknowledges this in his speech in a repetitive manner saying, but we
are just savages and do not understand (Seattle) three times. Chief Seattle despite knowing all of this,
still attempts to get the white people to understand, because he doesn t want the two peoples, white
and red, to live in fear of the other. He wants them to change their ways, and stop destroying the Earth.
He want s both the Tribes and the white men to become co inhabitants and stop fighting for the sake of
land. He is aiming for mutual respect and understanding, if not

The Positive Effects Of Employment On Lowering Recidivism
Much research has been done regarding the positive effect employment has on lowering recidivism.
However, little research has been done to determine the effect a criminal record, including registration
as a sex offender, has on finding gainful employment. Holzer s 1996 study (as cited by Johnson, 2006)
found that two thirds of employers in major cities would avoid hiring known ex offenders, indicating
that regardless of public policies that may make finding employment difficult, ex offenders ultimately
still have to overcome the social stigma of their criminal histories. Negative community attitudes
towards criminal history are even worse for those who are registered sex offenders (Willis, Levenson,
Ward, 2010). With the addition of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, the researchers also found that the unemployment rate among released offenders was over
six times higher than that of the general population at the time of the study in 2009. Furthermore, the
unemployment rate among ex offenders within nine months of release from prison was between 92 97
percent. Potential Barriers to Employment Unemployment can be especially hard to tackle when a
limited number of fields are open to those who are looking for jobs. A 1998 Bureau of Justice
Statisitcs Report (as quoted by Travis, Solomon, Waul, 2001) found that a number of fields were off
limits to ex offenders looking for work, including law, real estate, medicine, nursing, physical therapy,
and education . Released sex offenders may face further restrictions in which fields they may enter
depending on the stipulations of their release. Johnson (2006) notes that due to internet usage
restrictions, some released sex offenders are not able to perform jobs that require use of the internet.
Such restrictions may severely limit the job opportunities for ex offenders. Once an ex offender finds a
field in which they can work, they can be subject to further scrutiny through the use of criminal
background checks by hiring managers. Nally, et al. (2014) noted a number of studies showing that

The Mozart Effect
Have you ever hear the old saying Mozart makes babies smarter ? Can a mother simply playing
Mozart while the infant sleeps actually increase her baby s brain function? Well there is now evidence
that this once perceived old wives tale is actually true. The studies done to prove this seemingly
bizarre event have deemed it, The Mozart Effect.
The Mozart Effect is a set of research results that indicate that listening to Mozart s music may induce
a short term improvement on the performance of certain kinds of mental tasks known as spatial
temporal reasoning . Spatial temporal reasoning is the ability to visualize mental pictures of spatial
patterns and mentally changing them over a time ordered sequence of spatial transformations. This ...

Other researchers were unable to reproduce the findings but others confirmed the theory that listening
to Mozart s sonata K448 produced a small increase in spatial temporal performance. These
improvements were measured by various tests derived from the Stanford Binet scale such as paper
cutting and folding procedures or pencil and paper maze tasks. Rauscher has stressed that the Mozart
effect is only limited to spatial temporal reasoning and that there is no enhancement of general
intelligence; some of the negative results, she thinks, could be attributed to inappropriate test
procedures (Jenkins). Many have criticized these positive findings in saying that these effects are due
to the enjoyment arousal and that these same findings would not be present if the subject had no
appreciation for classical music. These opinions of the effect are countered by a study done on rats by
the University of Wisconsin in 1998. Rats were exposed in utero plus 60 days post partum to either
complex music (Mozart Sonata (k. 448)), minimalist music (a Philip Glass composition), white noise
or silence, and were then tested for five days in a multiple T maze. By Day 3, the rats exposed to the
Mozart work completed the maze more rapidly and with fewer errors than the rats assigned to the
other groups. The difference increased in magnitude through Day 5. This suggests that repeated
exposure to complex music induces improved spatial temporal learning in rats,

Zombie Attack Research Paper
Likelihood of a zombie attack
I need to warn you that someday zombies will take over the world. We need to be prepared, this is not
just my opinion. This is a fact. Watch any zombie movie, and you too will see the TRUTH. Although
the likely hood that you will be turned into a zombie is great, there re some things that you can do to
prepare.
You may ask, how do we prepare for the zombie attack? There are many things you need to keep in
mind to ensure that you too will survive the attack of the zombies. First, make sure you do not have
any close attachments to other people. because you will likely end up having to kill them this will be
hard for you if you have loved one, so it will be best if you just cut all attachments now.
Second, make sure you have the proper tools on hand. A gun will not serve you well in this situation;
however a collection of old knives will come in handy. A chain saw can be helpful, you need to make
sure it s rather gas than electric and have some extra gas on hand. Other useful items to have on hand
machete, automobile.

Pueblo Cultural Center Essay
Going to the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center was a new experience for me, I chose this location because
I have been living here in New Mexico for almost 7 years, and even though I consider myself Mexican
and Californian because great part of life I lived in those places, after 7 years of living here in New
Mexico I am starting to feel New Mexican as well. I am constantly being enculturated by New
Mexican traditions, learning about Native Americans provides me with knowledge that I can pass on
to my future generations.
My experience being there was educational, spiritual, and artistic. While learning about the Pueblo
beliefs, I can see that respect is one of their beliefs, whether respect for one another or respect for
Corn Mother, respect is a traditional of Pueblo people, taking care of one another and loving one
another is another beliefs associated with Pueblo people. Also for the Pueblo people it is essential to

Roman Kinship Societies
Kinship societies are those in which family is the basic and most important guideline for the way
people live. The authors of The Words of Our Ancestors: Kinship, Tradition, and Moral Codes
differentiate between kinship and non kinship relationships as not only in the amount of cooperation
one is likely to observe (Palmer and Steadman 1997), but in the duration of the relationship (Coe and
Palmer, 4). As mentioned in the text, in kinship societies, families maintain traditions, connections,
and values throughout generations. At the time of Rome s establishment in 753 B.C. kinship societies
dominated most of the world. Rome consisted of many outsiders from different ethnic groups and
societies coming together, which is why it may seem strange ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Rome was a pivotal moment as it went through a cultural revolution. Plutarch s novel The Life of Cato
the Elder displays many of these changes from early Roman life. To fully understand these cultural
changes, it helps best to understand Cato s life. He was a wealthy farmer, but he lived a minimalist
lifestyle. He would eat the same food and drink the same wine as his servants and even work on his
farm. This lifestyle choice set him apart from others as he was a wealthy man with land and servants,
doing manual labor. In early Rome, Romans favored those who came from noble or aristocratic
families for public office and senate. The Romans used to call men who had no family distinction, but
were coming into public notice through their own achievements, new men, and such they called Cato
(Plutarch, 303). Cato changed this way of thinking. He first gained public recognition through his
neighbor Valerius Flaccus. Flaccus persuaded him to go into public office. The beginning of Cato s
public career showed another cultural change in Rome, imperialism in the Punic wars. Imperialism in
Greece lead to the spread of Greek language and philosophy. Maybe one of the biggest changes of this
time was the introduction of Greek philosophy. Cato took the more traditional stance and even spoke
in Latin to Athenians even though he could speak Greek. He even mocked at those who were lost in
admiration of anything that was Greek. 5 For instance, he poked fun at

heroism is facing a great fear while being fully aware of the danger. Many people act courageously

The Pros And Cons Of Ethnic Studies
Ethnic Studies is a course that offers minority students the chance to learn history from an alternate
Perspective that is not to say that ethnic studies teaches kids radical, or extreme ideas, but rather
teaches them about the unsung heroes of history which are easily forgotten in modern day History
courses. It Allows students to discover their true identity and reconnect with their culture. However,
some people don t see it that way. Their are those who oppose the implementation of this course into
public schools, Mostly Conservative Republicans. Critics of the course claim It promotes racial
separation , linguistic isolation , and racial preference. Others will also claim the course is to
emotionally charged , and influences kids to rebel against the government, essentially turning them

Gondwana, the southern half of the ancient supercontinent Pangea and a supercontinent in its own
right, was composed of the continents and landmasses that we now call Antarctica, South America,
Africa, Madagascar, Australia, New Zealand, the Arabian Peninsula and the Indian subcontinent. A
supercontinent is a large landmass that is made up of several continents and a subcontinent is a large
distinguishable part of a continent, an example being the part of Asia which contains India, Pakistan
and Bangladesh. Gondwana was first formed between 570 510 Mya (million years ago) and then
combined with another supercontinent, Laurasia, to form Pangea. It then split from Pangea between
280 200 Mya, with different resources stating different timeframes for this split. Around 180 165 Mya,
Gondwana started to split and the continents started drifting to where they are today. Back when
Gondwana existed, the climate on Earth was milder than what it is today and the average temperature
was significantly higher than the average temperature on Earth now. As a result of this climate, much
of Gondwana was covered in lush temperate rainforests. The geological event that caused these
continents to combine together and split apart from each other is called continental drift. The

Infrared Spectral Ranges For Imaging Application
Abstract: Infrared imaging is widely used in biochemical sensing, medical diagnosis, and astronomy.
In this summer High Scholar program, we will develop reflection microscopy working at wide
infrared spectral ranges for imaging application. Reflection microscopy is based on gold coated
parabolic mirrors which make the microscope accessible to visible, infrared, and even terahertz light
without chromatic aberration. Here, we will design and build a reflection microscope, and obtain
visible and infrared images of simple biological samples such as onion cells to study a resolution and
other potential functions of the home built microscope.
Introduction: An optical microscope is an instrument that allows us to view micrometer scale objects
in a larger image. [Carl Zeiss] The microscope uses a compound lens which allows to get maximum
magnification. The compound lens is made up of multiple lenses that have a common axis, allowing
for a high magnification to be possible. The microscope consists of objective lens and eyepiece. The
objective lens is a vital part of a microscope since the lens provides a few different variations of power
for magnification, and the eyepiece magnification power helps multiply the objective lens power,
which will create a large amount of magnification. However, a microscope image is limited by a lens
material. Glass (fused silica) is only transparent to visible light and it cannot be used for infrared light.
Recently, infrared imaging has been used

beverage bars [ (U.S. Census Bureau) ]. According to the U.S. Census Bureau the official description
of the snack and nonalcoholic beverage bars is as follows: This U.S. industry comprises
establishments primarily engaged in (1) preparing and/or serving a specialty snack, such as ice cream,
frozen yogurt, cookies, or popcorn or (2) serving nonalcoholic beverages, such as coffee, juices, or
sodas for consumption on or near the premises. These establishments may carry and sell a
combination of snack, nonalcoholic beverage, and other related products (e.g., coffee beans, ... Show

In analyzing the bargaining power of buyers, it is important to look at both categories under a separate
scope.
End users are those individuals walking in the company stores, ordering a smoothie and a cookie,
paying the cashier and then telling her friend how wonderful the ambiance is. This buyer segment
does not purchase large amounts of product at one time and likely chooses Jamba because of the
quality of the ingredients. With no switching costs and a growing industry offering many options,
patrons of smoothie cafés can freely purchase their delightful cool beverage anywhere. According to
the U.S. Census Bureau the number of stores within the snack and nonalcoholic beverage bars
industry grew from 36,036 in 2002 to 49,463 in 2007 [ (U.S. Census Bureau) ]. This trend means that
Jamba Juice will have to increase customer loyalty to battle the increased competition. The second
type of buyer is the franchisee, which pays Jamba Juice for the right to use its trademarks and
proprietary business information (recipes, processes, menus, and other resources). As noted in the
case, Jamba engaged in a growth strategy in 2007 that involved acquisition of a majority of the
franchised locations. This approach reduced the franchisee s buying power and allowed Jamba to have
the upper hand. With the downturn of the economy forthcoming, franchise demands would likely
deteriorate. In spite of the growth opportunities offered by franchises, Jamba maintained

Analysis Of Helplessness Blues By Robin Pecknold
Seattle musician Robin Pecknold voices the struggle between who one is and who one wishes to be.
Robin Pecknold is the front man and songwriter of Fleet Foxes, a Seattle based indie folk band. In the
band s sophomore album, Helplessness Blues, Pecknold writes a story of whom he is and who he is
becoming. The musician realizes his departure from his selfish tendencies, and how his life differs
from that of his parents in the song Montezuma. The song following this one, Bedouin Dress, refers to
the way he had borrowed love from those he cared about in his youth. The album s title track,
Helplessness Blues, shows how Pecknold wants to have a simple life, but his fame has gotten in the
way. Pecknold not only uses his music to convey his own ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He is wondering if his life is currently on a course that would lead him to be solitary at his death. As
an ethereal vocally driven bridge ends, Pecknold changes his standpoint from one of regret to one of
greed, saying, Gold teeth and gold jewelry/ every piece of your dowry/ Throw them into the tomb with
me/ Bury them with my name (Montezuma). The writer believes that he might not be able to lose his
desire for material wealth or if even in his old age and death he will want to cling to his possessions.
He contrasts this by saying Unless I have some day/ Ran my wandering mind away . The musician
wants to escape, and to let his mind take him to a place in which he would not be drawn towards
riches. Pecknold ends this song by saying Oh man what I used to be/ Montezuma to Tripoli/ Oh man
oh my oh me (Montezuma). Montezuma to Tripoli is a line in the Marines Hymn, which is fitting
because this song is about the battle between one s selfish tendencies and who one wants to become.
Montezuma to Tripoli symbolizes that journey. In conclusion, Pecknold voices his struggle to become
selfless, and also voices his generation s struggle to do the same. The song that immediately follows
this one is called Bedouin Dress . The word Bedouin refers to someone who is prone to wander. This
song is more upbeat in tempo but also reflects a regretful tone. In the process of writing

Roth IRA Research Paper
The, best known as IRAs for its acronym in English (Individual Retirement Accounts), individual
retirement accounts are a good option to consider when planning for retirement, since these are
savings accounts with attractive tax advantages. These accounts are recommended if your employer
does not offer any retirement plan like a 401 (k), or if you want to have an additional plan to save
more for your retirement.
IRAs can be opened at any bank or brokerage firm, either in person or online. The opening process is
very simple and only requires to have on hand your social security number and beneficiaries, as well
as your basic personal information.

Roth IRA
Unlike the traditional IRA, the contributions you make in the Roth IRA are not tax deductible, but

TASK 1 PROPOSAL (Typed document minimum 1000 words)
Special investigation into editing
I will be talking about editing work through the industry of media, we will start some of the software
that is used in the industry today, these include, Premier pro, Avid, and final cut, avid has always been
a strong editing software in the industry, but as some technology rises and falls premier pro is just
edging the gap into the industry, as regular updates of this software make it the better choice for
editing films together as different filters, transitions and bugs with in the software are updated, for the
software to be crisp. Final cut on the other hand is mostly use by educational establishments for
training people to use software like this in the future as in the last few years final cut has dropped
down in consumer use as it is not been updated and is less consumer friendly for use then premier and
avid, This is reason for it being used in education.
Methodology of Video Editing
There are several different ways to edit video and each method has its pros and cons. Although most
editors go for non linear editing for most projects, it makes sense to have an understanding of how
each method works, as some people prefer different options or how some look, i.e Vintage

Antigone as a Tragic Hero Essay
Antigone as a tragic hero The debate over who is the tragic hero in Antigone is unanswered. The belief
that Antigone is the hero is a tough one. Antigone is widely thought of as the tragic hero of the play
bearing her name. She would seem to fit the part in light of the fact that she dies for doing what she
believes is right. She buries her brother without worrying what might happen to her. Unlike Antigone,
Ismene says And break the law, our death will be more shameful even then theirs (pg.5 line 60). In
Sophocle s Antigone, the characters show a variety of traits. However, Antigone s life of aspiration,
family of noble rank, and display of good mentality portray her as the tragic hero of the story. A tragic
hero has haughty, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Antigone fulfills all three traits thoroughly in the story of Antigone. A tragic flaw plays a very
imperative part of a tragic hero. Tragic flaw simply means a character weakness. The most common
types of tragic flaws are unwarranted pride, ambition, and jealousy. Those who do believe that
Antigone was meant to be the true tragic hero argue against others who believe that Creon deserves
that honor. They say that the Gods were against Creon, and that he did not truly love his country. His
patriotism is to narrow and negative and his conception of justice is too exclusive... to be dignified by
the name of love for the state . These arguments, and many others, make many people believe the
Antigone is the rightful protagonist. Antigone tries to help her brother without worrying about what
will happen to her. She says, I intend to give my brother burial. I ll be glad to die in the attempt, if it s
a crime, then it s a crime that God commands (she says in a different translation). Antigone says He
has no right to keep me from my own (pg.4 line 48). She was also punished for doing what was right.
Her epiphany came, hidden from the audience, before she hung herself. Creon, understanding his
ignorance may lead one to believe that he is the true protagonist. But, if you define the word
protagonist you would find that a protagonist is one who is a leader or supporter of a cause. Antigone
is in support of her own actions in the burial of her brother

Amy Tan s Joy Luck Club Essay
Throughout The Joy Luck Club Amy Tan inserts various conflicts betweens mothers and daughters.
Most of these relationships, already very fragile, become distanced through heritage, history and
expectations. These differences cause reoccurring clashes between two specific mother daughter
bonds. The first relationship exists between Waverly Jong and her mother, Lindo. Lindo tries to instill
Chinese qualities in her daughter while Waverly refuses to recognize her heritage and concentrates on
American culture. The second bond is that of Jing Mei Woo and her mother, Suyuan. In the beginning

Why do you have to use me to show off? (101). Waverly s bitterness increases the separation between
mother and child. Jing Mei doesn t believe her mother because her stories always change but she

storytelling is the message. I never thought my mother s Kweilin story was anything but a Chinese
fairy tale. The endings always changed. Sometimes she said she used that worthless thousand yuan not
to buy a half cup of rice (12). Another contributor to the conflicts in these relationships is history. Both
Lindo and Suyuan had remarkably different childhoods without most the opportunities their daughters

time understanding that. My mother believed you could be anything you wanted to be in America. You
could open a restaurant. You could would for the government and get good retirement. You could buy
a house with almost no money down. You could become rich. You could become instantly famous.

An Exploration of Media and its Effects on Social...
Media is becoming an important aspect of today s society. Each and every day, people interact with
media of many different forms. Media is commonly defined as being a channel of communication.
Our everyday lives are saturated by radio, television, newspapers, books, the Internet, movies,
recorded music, magazines, and more. In the twenty first century, we navigate through a vast mass
media environment unprecedented in human history. (Croteau and Hoynes, p. 3)This is also true when
we say media companies do not impose their own control upon the information being supplied to

Media has taken on an all new meaning to me from just taking this class. I feel truly that this is the
first class I can honestly say, I have learned something and grown because of what I have learned.
Media now is much more than the entertainment, news and advertisements I once thought it was.
We argue that the creators of media content have often reproduced the inequalities that exist in society
based on race, class, gender and sexual orientation. (Croteau and Hoynes, p.195) As a society we are
working our way toward a more equal society. As we know media is present in many aspects of our

negative aspects of society. We are aware that the few media corporations that are out there are owned
but successful, white men. So when they choose the shows/music/movies they want to produce these

society. So when society evolves into a more accepting community what happens to the media world?
Creators of media products are often aware of this fact and use entertainment media to comment on
the real social world. (Croteau and Hoynes, p.97) Race refers to the color/ethnic background of a

History Of The Fire Service Essay
History Of The Fire Service Throughout history men and women have devoted their lives to serving
their community in the fire service. Innovation in technology and ideology has shaped today s fire
service. From St. Florian and Ancient Rome to The Knights of St. John and the Crusaders; from the
ashes of The Great Fire of London to King Saint Louis of France and the guet bourgeois; from the
colonial Bucket Brigades to Benjamin Franklin and his Union Fire Company; From the inferno of the
Great Chicago Fire to those lost in the attacks on the World Trade Centers on September 11th, 2001;
the fire service continues to evolve to meet the needs of society and answer the calls of those in need.
Although many changes have occurred throughout it s evolution courage, honor and duty connects the
past to the present day firefighter. The first evidence of machinery used to fight fire included a water
pump found in Ancient Egypt dated to the third century BC invented by Ctesibius of Alexandria.
However, Marcus Licinius Crassus under Augustus rule in Ancient Rome created the first fire brigade.
Crassus was born around the year 115 BC into a wealthy Roman family, and became even wealthier
through a business plan known as fire and rapine. His strategy took advantage of Rome having no fire
department. Crassus created a fire brigade of 500 men who rushed to burning buildings. Upon arriving

one another for example, gang violence leads into school violence, which leads into dating violence,
which all wraps up under youth violence. Each of these topics is also different from one another

Edgar Allan Poe Symbolism In The Raven
The Raven is a narrative poem written by Edgar Allan Poe. Many authors have used talking ravens in
their writing however Edgar Allen Poe was inspired by A Tale of the Riots Eighty by Charles Dickens.
Edgar Allan Poe wrote this poem when his wife was on her deathbed. Throughout the poem, he looks
for some answers related to Lenore, wishing that she would come to him even if in a ghostly form,
because he loves her and wants her. The raven in the poem may also symbolize the narrator as a
person as well. In stanza 12, line 5, the poem reads: ...this grim, ungainly, ghastly, gaunt, and ominous
bird of yore. These all seem to describe what the narrator is feeling. Yore means long ago, or to look
back in time, like he was looking back on Lenore.
In Edgar Allen Poe s poem, The Raven, the narrator is taunted and goaded by a raven in the midst of
his grieving the death of his love, Lenore. In his poem, Poe does not make it clear if the raven is a real,
physical bird inside the narrator s chambers or if the slightly mad narrator conjured up this being
inside his own head. This differentiation makes it difficult to know what I, personally, would do if
confronted with Poe s raven. However, real or not, I think that I would experience many of the same ...

Christian Disciplines Of The Spiritual Realm
Introduction
The classic Disciplines of the spiritual life call us to move beyond surface living into the depths. They
invite us to explore the inner caverns of the spiritual realm. They urge us to be the answer to a hollow
world. There are many different but important Christian disciplines. Some that as Christian we all
practice on a regular basses while other which people are specifically called to undertake during their
walk. As Christians we may never fully participate in every discipline throughout our walk. The
discipline of fasting is one which has been around before Jesus, Old Testament saints fasted at times of
mourning and national repentance. They fasted when they needed strength or mercy or persevere and
when they wanted a word from God (see 1 Samuel 7:6, Nehemiah 1:4, Esther 4:16). For over 2
thousand years, Fasting has been an important part of our Christian walk, to help us draw closer to
God and to rely and trust Him more.
Summaries your original understanding of the discipline before the course started.
As a young Christian, my knowledge about the Christian disciplines was very limited. I had a very
limited knowledge on fasting. I believed that is was just something Christians did, as God called them
to do, not that there was such a deep meaning to the discipline of fasting. I understood that it was what
Jesus did a number of times.

  • 2. The Effects Of Methylphenidate On Children And Youth Methylphenidate, commonly known as Ritalin was synthesized in 1944 (U.S. Pharmacist, 2002). By 1954, it was being tested on humans to treat: chronic fatigue, depression, psychosis associated with depression, narcolepsy, and to offset the sedating effects of other medications. (U.S. Pharmacist, 2002) The interest to use Ritalin to treat the hyperkinetic syndrome. (U.S. Pharmacist, 2002) Which later was called Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) wasn t introduced until the 1960s. Many studies have been conducted in order to determine the effects it has on the brain as well as, the tolerance, dependence, and withdrawal with being prescribed Ritalin. Within these studies, the effectiveness of Ritalin on children and youth ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It was reported that 51% of males that took Ritalin compared to the 24% that did not, commit self harm (cutting, burning, poison or overdose) or had suicidal tendencies. With the report being high it was a clear conclusion that the prescription of Ritalin did have a risk factor with being diagnosis with ADHD. Furthermore, anti social behaviour, depression and anxiety (Bushe, 2013) were found in associated with self harm. Ritalin might not have any negative physical health found at this time but it does have mental health association that impact the population affected with ADHD and more studies should be conducted long term to see the full effect of this over prescribed drug to youth. With Ritalin being prescribed to youth as young as age three (DeNoon, 2006) it can be determined that parents and educators will do anything to medicate children that may be prone to accidents or behavioural issues because of their hyperactivity and age. Greenhill, a psychiatry professor at Columbia University and director of paediatric psychopharmacology at New York State (DeNoon, 2006) stated that medicating preschoolers does have their benefits: They have difficult peer relationships due to lack of reciprocity and perhaps aggression. And they are very prone to accidents. Many of them were attending emergency rooms with cuts and bruises and broken bones, because their fearlessness and activity level made life dangerous ... • 3. America s Decision to Drop the Atomic Bomb Essay Perhaps the most controversial and heavily scrutinized issue of the twentieth century was President Harry Truman s decision to unleash atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the summer of 1945. While the sequence of events preceding that fateful summer morning of August 6,1945 are fully understood, the motives behind Truman s actions are shrouded in controversy. Top military officials publicly denounced the use of such a horrendous weapon, while the obvious advantages to the bomb, traditionalists argue, was a shortened Pacific War. Parallactic views between traditional beliefs and revisionist theories suggest that the issue is still very much unresolved. Why is the issue so hotly debated? Partially because of the overwhelming ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In addition: The Japanese army was already training its civilians to fight with sharpened bamboo poles...[By] using sharpened pikes the Japanese could easily prevent a military government from being effective in those towns which the U.S. captured. The real predicament involving the invasion of Japan was the fierce resistance expected during and after the assault. Because of such drastic Japanese resistance, it would not only be impractical, it would be senseless to launch an attempt to invade and occupy Japan. Thus, dropping the atomic bomb was a military necessity in order to prevent a disastrous and precarious land invasion. By avoiding a highly questionable land invasion, the bomb saved half a million American lives. In his personal diary, Truman wrote, General Marshall told me that it might cost half a million American lives to force the enemy s surrender on his home grounds. This estimate was based on previous battle figures at Okinawa, where Americans suffered 50,000 casualties despite outnumbering the Japanese by two and a half to one. Indeed, if Truman opted to ... • 4. Rise And Fall Of The Civil Rights Summary The beginning of, KKK The Rise and Fall of the Civil Rights , starts off with the opening of a KKK rally happening in Raleigh North Carolina, on August, 14, 1966. Bob Jones, one of the major klan leaders, was a speaker at that day. Jones was born right outside of Charlotte, North Carolina, he was a high school dropout, and not soon after a discharged from the navy for not saluting a black officer. Next, the presentation draws our attention to a battle scene of the Civil War, during this time is when the organization was born. A group of soldiers from Tennessee would pose as dead confederate soldiers and terrorized newly freed slaves. Throwing them over bridges, torturing, and hanging them. Throughout history the KKK would rise in numbers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At his first over 2000 people showed up, which later would turn into the hundreds of thousands. While he was traveling, he recruited minister Dorset who became the klans priest at every event. Dorset and Jones became a deadly duo. The Andy Griffith show was a representation of what North Carolina thought of itself, co existing with blacks. Never had anything to say, just went along with the whites peacefully. During this time in the 60 s, NC had become the new south moving out of its racial period. They didn t want to really change, but would gradually take steps forward just to say they were doing more than everybody else in the south. But this wasn t enough for blacks, in 64 the civil rights movement revved up once again. The KKK supported the traditionalist idea, and spoke for the people being left out of the new south . BJ started his political gatherings again, only whites aloud. During the day, there would be rides, food, entertainment, and more, but, at night they would bring out the klans speakers. Dorset targeted and manipulated the religious crowd of the small country towns into further believing in what they were already thinking, through religion, justifying racism, and it ... • 5. Justification Of Moral Obligation On The Suffering Of... What reasons might someone give for caring more about the suffering of people close by than that of those far away? Do these reasons give moral justification for this stance? The question that will be answered within this essay asks why, if justifiable, someone might give preferential care to the suffering of a collective group what are within closer distance than a collective who may be a large distance away. In this essay, I will offer some reasons for why this might be, and attempt to find reason to justify them with reference to external material which tries to find reason and argument about whether this stance can be morally accepted among applied ethical issues. This essay will be split into two main parts, consisting of two intertwining reasons followed by my reasoning for justification of this moral stance. I will argue that regardless of moral obligation I believe that we are more justified to care for people closer by, this will be the primary argument of this essay. A reason one might give to only helping someone close, with my assumption that close means people within the same society or social contract as the person rescuing, is that as agents within this contract, we have negative rights. Negative rights are liberties that one has, meaning that they are not obligated, but freely allowed to do something within reason. We could void these negative rights if we believe they will benefit our society or community, and should be influenced to do so, but ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Chief Seattle Speech Summary Two great chiefs, Tecumseh and Seattle, attempted to address the U.S. government s negligence against the Native American tribes, who preceded the very men who ignore their needs. Chief Seattle delivers a speech to President Pierce in 1855, and in it contrasts nature and artificial cities. There is no quiet place in man s cities, no place to hear the leaves of spring or the rustle of insect wings. But perhaps because I am a savage and do not understand, the clatter only seems to insult the ears. (Seattle). He uses imagery to describe the delicacy of nature to the crude artificialness of man s cities , and provide a greater understanding of how their lives differ. Chief Seattle knows that the President, just like all other white me, has preconceptions about Native Americans. However, little research has been done to determine the effect a criminal record, including registration as a sex offender, has on finding gainful employment. Holzer s 1996 study (as cited by Johnson, 2006) found that two thirds of employers in major cities would avoid hiring known ex offenders, indicating that regardless of public policies that may make finding employment difficult, ex offenders ultimately still have to overcome the social stigma of their criminal histories. Negative community attitudes towards criminal history are even worse for those who are registered sex offenders (Willis, Levenson, Ward, 2010). With the addition of ... However, the researchers also found that the unemployment rate among released offenders was over six times higher than that of the general population at the time of the study in 2009. Furthermore, the unemployment rate among ex offenders within nine months of release from prison was between 92 97 percent. Potential Barriers to Employment Unemployment can be especially hard to tackle when a limited number of fields are open to those who are looking for jobs. A 1998 Bureau of Justice Statisitcs Report (as quoted by Travis, Solomon, Waul, 2001) found that a number of fields were off limits to ex offenders looking for work, including law, real estate, medicine, nursing, physical therapy, and education . Released sex offenders may face further restrictions in which fields they may enter depending on the stipulations of their release. Johnson (2006) notes that due to internet usage restrictions, some released sex offenders are not able to perform jobs that require use of the internet. Such restrictions may severely limit the job opportunities for ex offenders. Once an ex offender finds a field in which they can work, they can be subject to further scrutiny through the use of criminal background checks by hiring managers. Nally, et al. Well there is now evidence that this once perceived old wives tale is actually true. The studies done to prove this seemingly bizarre event have deemed it, The Mozart Effect. The Mozart Effect is a set of research results that indicate that listening to Mozart s music may induce a short term improvement on the performance of certain kinds of mental tasks known as spatial temporal reasoning . Spatial temporal reasoning is the ability to visualize mental pictures of spatial patterns and mentally changing them over a time ordered sequence of spatial transformations. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Other researchers were unable to reproduce the findings but others confirmed the theory that listening to Mozart s sonata K448 produced a small increase in spatial temporal performance. These improvements were measured by various tests derived from the Stanford Binet scale such as paper cutting and folding procedures or pencil and paper maze tasks. Rauscher has stressed that the Mozart effect is only limited to spatial temporal reasoning and that there is no enhancement of general intelligence; some of the negative results, she thinks, could be attributed to inappropriate test procedures (Jenkins). Many have criticized these positive findings in saying that these effects are due to the enjoyment arousal and that these same findings would not be present if the subject had no appreciation for classical music. These opinions of the effect are countered by a study done on rats by the University of Wisconsin in 1998. Rats were exposed in utero plus 60 days post partum to either complex music (Mozart Sonata (k. 448)), minimalist music (a Philip Glass composition), white noise or silence, and were then tested for five days in a multiple T maze. By Day 3, the rats exposed to the Mozart work completed the maze more rapidly and with fewer errors than the rats assigned to the other groups. The difference increased in magnitude through Day 5. This suggests that repeated exposure to complex music induces improved spatial temporal learning in rats, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Rome was a pivotal moment as it went through a cultural revolution. Plutarch s novel The Life of Cato the Elder displays many of these changes from early Roman life. To fully understand these cultural changes, it helps best to understand Cato s life. He was a wealthy farmer, but he lived a minimalist lifestyle. He would eat the same food and drink the same wine as his servants and even work on his farm. This lifestyle choice set him apart from others as he was a wealthy man with land and servants, doing manual labor. In early Rome, Romans favored those who came from noble or aristocratic families for public office and senate. The Romans used to call men who had no family distinction, but were coming into public notice through their own achievements, new men, and such they called Cato (Plutarch, 303). Cato changed this way of thinking. He first gained public recognition through his neighbor Valerius Flaccus. Flaccus persuaded him to go into public office. The beginning of Cato s public career showed another cultural change in Rome, imperialism in the Punic wars. Imperialism in Greece lead to the spread of Greek language and philosophy. Maybe one of the biggest changes of this time was the introduction of Greek philosophy. Cato took the more traditional stance and even spoke in Latin to Athenians even though he could speak Greek. He even mocked at those who were lost in admiration of anything that was Greek. 5 For instance, he poked fun at ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In this summer High Scholar program, we will develop reflection microscopy working at wide infrared spectral ranges for imaging application. Reflection microscopy is based on gold coated parabolic mirrors which make the microscope accessible to visible, infrared, and even terahertz light without chromatic aberration. Here, we will design and build a reflection microscope, and obtain visible and infrared images of simple biological samples such as onion cells to study a resolution and other potential functions of the home built microscope. Introduction: An optical microscope is an instrument that allows us to view micrometer scale objects in a larger image. [Carl Zeiss] The microscope uses a compound lens which allows to get maximum magnification. The compound lens is made up of multiple lenses that have a common axis, allowing for a high magnification to be possible. The microscope consists of objective lens and eyepiece. The objective lens is a vital part of a microscope since the lens provides a few different variations of power for magnification, and the eyepiece magnification power helps multiply the objective lens power, which will create a large amount of magnification. However, a microscope image is limited by a lens material. Glass (fused silica) is only transparent to visible light and it cannot be used for infrared light. The writer believes that he might not be able to lose his desire for material wealth or if even in his old age and death he will want to cling to his possessions. Tragic flaw simply means a character weakness. The most common types of tragic flaws are unwarranted pride, ambition, and jealousy. They say that the Gods were against Creon, and that he did not truly love his country. His patriotism is to narrow and negative and his conception of justice is too exclusive... to be dignified by the name of love for the state . Many authors have used talking ravens in their writing however Edgar Allen Poe was inspired by A Tale of the Riots Eighty by Charles Dickens. Edgar Allan Poe wrote this poem when his wife was on her deathbed. Throughout the poem, he looks for some answers related to Lenore, wishing that she would come to him even if in a ghostly form, because he loves her and wants her. The raven in the poem may also symbolize the narrator as a person as well. In stanza 12, line 5, the poem reads: ...this grim, ungainly, ghastly, gaunt, and ominous bird of yore. These all seem to describe what the narrator is feeling. Yore means long ago, or to look back in time, like he was looking back on Lenore. In Edgar Allen Poe s poem, The Raven, the narrator is taunted and goaded by a raven in the midst of his grieving the death of his love, Lenore. In his poem, Poe does not make it clear if the raven is a real, physical bird inside the narrator s chambers or if the slightly mad narrator conjured up this being inside his own head. As Christians we may never fully participate in every discipline throughout our walk. The discipline of fasting is one which has been around before Jesus, Old Testament saints fasted at times of mourning and national repentance. They fasted when they needed strength or mercy or persevere and when they wanted a word from God (see 1 Samuel 7:6, Nehemiah 1:4, Esther 4:16). For over 2 thousand years, Fasting has been an important part of our Christian walk, to help us draw closer to God and to rely and trust Him more. Summaries your original understanding of the discipline before the course started. As a young Christian, my knowledge about the Christian disciplines was very limited.
