Band Section Leader
A marching band is composed of people, playing musical instruments, usually during the halftime
portion of a football game, to perform songs arranged by various artists. The band is divided into
sections. A section is determined by the instrument one plays. Each section must have a leader. A
section leader is one or more people who give rules for other members of the section to follow.
While trying to become the best section leader ever, one must develop social skills, a positive
attitude, and determination. The first step in being a great section leader is to have prodigious social
skills. Being social means that a person is able to communicate effectively with people without
conflict. In my opinion, a section leader needs to be social in order to give instructions and receive
positive feedback from other section members. If the leader of a certain section is not able to
communicate well, things will not run as effectively as the band director desires. Being social also
means on enjoys the companionship that comes along with being a leader. I feel that if a leader is

When everyone else has that "I don't care," or "I don't want" attitude, it is the section leaders job to
reassure or encourage the individual to do the right thing and follow directions as her or she was
told. Often times, the section members need that extra little push to keep striving to be the best the
best marcher they can be, and because of the section leaders optimistic yet constructive attitude, it is
easy for section members to respond positively. In my first year in band, I looked up to my section
leaders because I knew that if I needed help with anything on the marching field, they would not
mind helping me. Sometimes, because of their jolly attitudes, section leaders were known as the
happiest members of the entire

Marching Band Research Paper
Marching band has been the most time–consuming and enjoyable extracurricular I have participated
in throughout some of middle school and all of high school. I marched alto saxophone when I was in
the seventh, eighth, and ninth grades and I have been drum major (also known as field commander)
since my sophomore year of high school. Having this job has been a huge responsibility, but it has
also given me invaluable learning and leadership experience. There are very few positions in high
school, or even as a teenager in general, that can offer such excellent leadership experience as
serving as drum major. The role of a drum major is to conduct a marching band, essentially serving
as a metronome to set the tempo for the group. While this is my

The Princess Bride: An Analysis Of Marching Band
Marching band is a social and collaborative effort at its core. As fun as it would be, a one–person
marching band would consist of an exhausted player trying to trapeze across a football field carrying
a bass drum, trumpet, tuba, snare drum, flute, bells, and cymbals in a contraption reminiscent of the
life–draining machine in The Princess Bride. Every time I walk onto the grass in front of a crowd of
semi–apathetic high school students and devoted band parents, pushing an array of wooden blocks
and twine sticks, I realize how much of band is a group effort. I have no ability to march or play a
brass instrument, which is where marching band started. I cannot throw a flag and guarantee that it

The Drum Research Paper
The drums are one of humanities oldest musical instrument and, like all instruments, the drums
continue existing to this day as a method of communication. Previously drumming was often used as
a social mediator, played to bring together the community and act as a vehicle in carrying messages
and stories, alongside ceremonial use. However, within the last century, the drums have morphed
radically into their current potential purpose and capabilities. Drifting from their roots as a vehicle
for the community into its very own art, and modern drumming is undeniably an art, requiring
immense dedication and devotion to actualise a drummer's potential. Similar to other musical
instruments as art forms, the drums allow for a high capacity to incorporate ... Show more content

Dynamics refers to the level of force used on the drum in order to create the desired volume.
Dynamics is necessary in all drumming in directing attention and suggesting what the audience
should be doing, thinking, feeling, etc., etc. The volume level is obviously different for the
macrosystem of drumming like the style and genre that's encompassing the music. Aloud and heavy
four–on–the–floor wouldn't suit jazz as that's not what's trying to be conveyed, instead "feathering"
is a more common jazz use of the kick drum which involves lighter hit so it's not pronounced and
oppressive to the rest of the music; however, this heavy beat would be perfect for house or disco as
it is much easier to dance to at a nightclub, which is exactly what the drummer is going for in this
setting. This demonstrates dynamics relationship to the type of music, but it also varies within the
microsystem – the individuals input – of the drumming, on a beat–by–beat basis. The drummer
again has to judge and monitor what volume level they assume is appropriate, this refers to all of the
strokes but also individual hits to accentuate specific parts. This is a necessary part of microsystemic
drumming as accents is responsible for a lot of direction of where the music is going. It can build a
crescendo in a fill or ease a diminuendo, which may signify that a change is about to happen. This

Modern Day Drum Research Paper
The modern day drum set has various parts to it. You have the drums, which include the: bass drum,
snare drum, rack tom or toms, and floor tom or toms. Then you have the cymbals. There are eight
different types of cymbals that can go into a drum set. They are the hi–hats, the ride cymbal, the
crash cymbal, the crash–ride cymbal, the china cymbal, the splash cymbal, the effects cymbal, and
the bell. Each of these cymbals give off many different sounds. The most important part of your
drum set is your cymbals because they are the voice. The drums only make one sound when you hit
them. Each cymbal can produce countless sounds. The most important of these cymbals are the hi–

The Drums Album Summertime
The Drums are an American indie pop band from Brooklyn, New York. When the group moved
from Kissimmee, Florida to New York, they immediately got the attention of the indie world when
their album Summertime was released.
The album Summertime is a collection of beach pop fantasy with tracks that are filled with
sentimental yearning that really sweeps over an individual. They became an irresistible and popular
band in the summer of 2009. The Summertime record has become the perfect upbeat and post–punk
summer fling album to have.
The founding members of The Drums are Jonny Pierce and Jacob Graham who have been friends
since they were children. Several years after being friends they created a short lived electro pop
group called Goat Explosion. Afterwards Jonny Pierce developed the Elkland group and Jacob
Graham formed the Horse Shoes group.
When Elkland parted ways in May 2006 Jonny decided to stop creating music for a few years. In
2008 Jonny and Jacob met back up and created the group The Drums. At that time they hired
drummer Conner Hanwick and guitarist Adam Kessler. In October of 2009 their very first album
was released called Summertime. In September 2010 it was broadcasted that Adam Kessler had left
the band.
According to the remaining members it was devastating at first when Kessler left with no clear
circumstances. This in turn introduced Chris Stein on drums and Myles Matheny doing backup
vocals as well as guitar. A couple of weeks later Pierce announced the

Chamba Drum Research Paper
What is its purpose?
Drums are one of the most important forms of art and music in Africa. This artifact was used as a
musical instrument and as a sculpture, which was significant for numerous ceremonies such as
dance, rituals, story – telling, and communicating messages. Devotional songs were also sung
throughout the night (Ancient Artifax).
Who did it belong to (what social class)?
This artifact belonged to the Chamba tribe of Northern Nigeria.
How old is it?
The Chamba drum dates back to the late nineteenth and early twentieth century.
Where was it found?
The artifact was found in the present–day borderline between the Cameroon and Nigeria (Ancient
Artifax).
What does it tell you about this particular civilization?
The Chamba drums tell me that music and dance in Africa was a significant part of their lifestyle
and played an important role in many momentous ceremonies. With knowledge about this artifact it
is easier to visualize what rituals resembled and what values and traditions their culture had.
Additionally, it showcases some of the events that took place in this civilization. The Chamba tribe
considered music to be quite significant and relied on it for special occasions.
Do we have any similar innovations at the present moment?
Drums are still made to this day for musical purposes as well as for dance, rituals, ceremonies, etc.

had the privilege of attending a Wisconsin Badger game at Camp Randall and it was an awesome
experience. I have long forgotten the logistics of the game itself, but I still remember the marching
band. With their high knees perfectly in step, their tight spins perfectly in time, and their shining
silver instruments perfectly in position, the excitement they brought to the crowd was undeniable. I
easily envisioned myself playing "On Wisconsin" on the field, hyping up fans with my music. After

Everybody loves pep assemblies, don't you!? Usually consisting of the band playing music, people
cheering, and the athletes being praised for their hard work and wished good luck, pep assemblies
are a lot of fun and a good way to come together and get excited about something. However, athletes
these days always receive full attention, and are provided all the support they need in order to be
successful, whether it's physical or psychological. What about other sport like activities, such as
concert and pep band? I consider band to be like a sport, though not many people do. Like athletes,
we practice every day, learn new techniques, and cooperate with other peers to achieve one main
goal. So why isn't there any assemblies focusing on the accomplishments, and contest to come, for
all the musically talented kids in our school. Yes, football has games and plays against other teams,

Timpani Research Paper
The timpani is a percussion instrument with the longest tradition. It's been used in a variety of
music: ranging from music to symbolize the power of monarchs to church music. The tuning of the
instrument has changed throughout it's lifespan. First from not being able to tune them at all, to
having large, awkward screws, to having an operating pedal on the bottom to change the tension of
the head (Tucmandl). The way performers tune this drum has always been improved, making it
easier on the performer when on stage. The next step to improve the efficiency of tuning was made
with a new way to tune, with electronics. Recently, inventor David Byrd Ribner has created a tuning
and pitch control system for the timpani. This makes it almost automatic, and also makes it
extremely easier for a timpanist to perform on the spot.
The control system uses a position sensor that specifies a reference value corresponding to a desired
timpani pitch. Then it uses a control unit applies a force on the timpani head, determining a
deviation between a measured pitch value ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Imagine the noodle and string as the pedal of the timpani head, where as it goes to the right the
tension of the head increases, which also creates a higher pitch, and the zone indicates the desired
pitch. One can see the difficulty of the pitch changes by trying to quickly flick the noodle in the
zone with their eyes closed, just like trying to tune a timpani to a desired range without knowing
what the current pitch is, with only one chance for perfection. After a few times, it becomes easier as
one knows the zone more. With the device, one can see the comparison by flicking with their eyes
open, and also having two chances to flick it, since the device tells the timpanist what the pitch is
and also how they need to change the pedal. This creates the obvious simplicity the device makes to
the timpanist, especially when

Analysis Of The Planets By Gustav Theodore Holst
Gustav Theodore Holst was born on September 21st, 1874 and died on May 25th, 1934 he was an
English composer and teacher. He was best known for The Planets suite, this composition became
famous internationally after World War One. The Planets was composed from 1914 to 1916, it had
seven movements, each of the movements had the Astrological traits of the planets but had no
connections to mythology. The first movement of the suite is Mars Bringer of War which refers to
the God of War. This movement includes various instruments such as tubas, trumpets, trombones,
horns, timpani, flutes, clarinets, violins, cellos, and snare drums. The movement was characterized
by five beats and a minor scale which indicates the opposite of happy. There is no harmonic purpose
in the Bringer of War piece, I would classify it as an inhuman piece of work because war is horrific,
insensible at all costs. The music was suspenseful and tormenting since the beginning, it had a fast
tempo throughout the whole movement. Many dynamics were used all the way through, when the
movement was finishing up many rests kept showing as if war came to an end or was coming to an
end. Mars, Bringer of War gave me an utterly angry, threatening vibe, the combination of the
rhythms, the vibrato of the string instruments and the beats of the drum gave the whole movement a
military essence. Although I believe that the rhythm, in the beginning, was not the same in the end it
somehow slightly changed. Gustav creates

Reflection Essay
For the past three and a half years I have participated in the school band. In that time I've taken part
in concert band, marching band, and jazz band. Setting up my schedule in sixth grade kicked off the
adventure.
Since a very young age, I had been certain I would be in band. There was, however, one major
problem. Choosing what to play was unfathomable. Only a few weeks prior to sixth–grade year,
when it was time to build my schedule, I was still in toil trying to figure out what to try. Finally, just
before we handed over the schedule form, my mother said, "You are always tapping on things why
don't you join the percussion section." Uttering those words, she flipped a switch within me. I knew
what was meant to play.
Percussion instruments are all instruments played by striking with the hand, beater, pedal operated
or handheld stick, or by shaking or cranking. Included in these are drums, cymbals, keyed
instruments, and all sorts of rattles. Surprised, on the first day of school I had a realization; mostly
boys would be interested in playing drums.
Great glee came with the first year, but looking back on it, I had no idea how exceptional it would
become. Used as an introduction for what was to come, we spent the 180 days learning to count
rhythms, read notes, play the notes and rhythms, and use proper technique. At that time they only
allowed us to play bells. All of the songs were simple and bland, but I was ecstatic. In good
sportsmanship, I was constantly battling

Joining Band Essay
The Best Decision I ever made: Joining Band
Five years ago, I was introduced to the subject of band by my best friend and that introduction
sowed the seed to join. The next decision I faced was the important choice of an instrument, which
was not very hard for me. I chose the clarinet because it was the only one that responded with a
grateful sound. Without my license and parents working late at night, I had to search for a ride since
I assumed my friend, who attended band on a different day, could take me. Getting up an hour
earlier than most students proved to be a struggle for me, but as time went on it became less
challenging. Joining band was and is more than a musical exercise for me; it equates unity with
harmony, personal growth with rhythm, and benefits with melody on the larger playing field of life.
Harmony is defined as the combination of sounds to produce chords which can be compared to the
coming together first of my instrument and me and the two of us with the band. My clarinet and ...

Similarly, band practice allows me the freedom to follow my own inclinations just as much as I also
have to follow the drum major. Reconciling the two is a matter of rhythm because rhythm sets the
pace, one that you set for yourself as well as one that someone else sets for you. Participating in
band requires a substantial time investment and is rather demanding. Therefore, I had to learn to be
organized and to prioritize wisely to meet all the scheduling details ranging from school, homework,
my job, science Olympiad, band practice, friendships, and many more. As a result of my interest and
passion for this extracurricular activity, my time management skills and self–discipline have greatly

The Concert Is Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique
The concert is Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique, performed by The Chicago Symphony Orchestra,
conducted by Stéphane Denève, recorded in high definition at Orchestra Hall in December 2013.
Symphonie Fantastique composed in 1845, by Hector Berlioz (1803–1869), is a program symphony;
a five movement orchestral work that tells the story described by the CSO (2013) "as a purely
musical melodrama", a colorful illustration of the life of an artist, "replete with unrequited love,
witches, guillotines and colorful, opium–induced hallucinations". Its composer, Hector Berlioz at the
age of twenty–seven wrote "Symphonie Fantastique both to explore German Romanticism and to
give his hometown of Paris a symphony of its own; something not yet native to this city of operas
and ballets" (CSO, 2013). Berlioz's symphonic back ground in the operatic overture alludes to his
program notes presented "as the spoken text of an opera". The memorable dramatic flair of
Symphonie Fantastique is understood to be one of the most well–known pieces of program music in
his repertoire and is suggested that the story is a self–portrait of its composer, Hector Berlioz.
Innovative the time, Berlioz devised a program to be given out to audience members at the
performances stating it is "indispensable for a complete understanding of the dramatic outline of the
work." Berlioz's outlines the story in the preface of the program for his Symphonie Fantastique

Four Pieces For Timpani Essay
Music has always been part of our daily lives, rooted in our culture and contributing to our
development. Listening to and playing music allows us to experience a wide range of emotions
including pleasure, joy, sadness, angst etc; it touches us at a subconscious level and influences life
changing experiences. In my opinion the rhythms used in music are comparable to the rhythms in
our speech and communication. In this paper, the link between rhythms and speech will be identified
using the rhythmic qualities of the following pieces: Earth Dance by Bill Douglas; The Recital Snare
Drum Suite by William
J. Schinstine and Four Pieces for Timpani by John Bergamo as a medium to do so.

I believe that in the name of the piece itself there is a deeper meaning. If we look at the name Four
Pieces "FOR" Timpani with the emphasis on the word "FOR", this implies that he didn't
intentionally compose the piece for an audience but for each Timpano by its self. He named the first
movement,
Recitative. Recitative according to the oxford dictionary means, "A musical declamation of the kind
usually in the narrative and dialogue parts of Operas, sung in the rhythms of ordinary speech with
many words on the same note." So by taking this definition into consideration, the way he composed
and structured the first movement shows a dialog between each drum. A lot of the rhythmic groups
are usually started on one drum and eventually moves to the other drums as if it were a call and
answer. Human beings as I mentioned earlier speaks within a rhythm or rhythmic structure, this can
me seen using the concept of Audiation, some examples are as follows using groupings that are
present in the piece;
*Triplets – "Beautiful"
*Sixteenth notes – "Peanut Butter"
*Quintuplets – "Hippopotamus"

Music Class Under The Instruction And Supervision Of Mr....
We learned several things in Music class under the instruction and supervision of Mr. Gonzales. We
started in a timeline beginning at the very first instrument ever, the heart. The heart was the very
first "beat" and clave was formed based on this "beat". Clave is the foundation of almost every Latin
song and most songs found around the world. Developed in Africa as one the earliest beats, clave
was played on one of the first instruments, the Bongo drums. All drums are based after this drum
which is still widely used in Africa for celebrations among tribes. The Bongo drums were made,
originally, from wood and cowhide. Another ancient instrument was the Timbales (drums) which

The gong is another percussion instrument that is a type of cymbal and is untuned. Maracas are also
a percussion instruments because sound is made by shaking them and are untuned, as well. The
voice can also be a percussion through beat–boxing, making noise that resembles that of drums and
other instruments. There are also many string instruments. The Clavichord instrument is one of the
oldest string instruments and is only capable of producing a small sound. The ones used, mainly, in
an orchestra are as follow: Violin (fiddle), Viola, Cello, and the Double Bass. A violin can also be
called a fiddle as it is usually called in folk music. The viola is a fretless instrument and, thus, harder
to play. Other popular string instruments are the acoustic guitar whose origin dates back thousands
of years in Greek, Sanskrit, and Arabic cultures. Some examples of guitar–like instruments are the
Dotar (two strings), the Setar (three strings), the Qithara (four strings), the Panchtar (five strings),

The definition of a sport is an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or
team competes against another or others for entertainment. Many people question whether or not
marching band is a sport. Although some people may think it is nothing like a sport, many other
people do consider it one. Marching band should be considered a sport because you need both
physical and mental strength and skills.
Marching band should be considered a sport because the difficulty is equal to any other sport both
mentally and physically. Some students need to carry an instrument up to 30 pounds with perfect
posture. Before rehearsal, students also have to warm up, do stretches, and even run. Students have
to be able to memorize notes, dots, and stay in step with the entire band. In order to do these things,
students have to be super concentrated and must constantly practice. Just like any other sport, the
participants have to stay committed, and it's crucial that they are there for every practice. If a student
misses, there is a chance they will lose their spot and be very lost when they return. ... Show more

Many schools have rehearsal for 8 hours or more so both the music and visual part can be rehearsed.
It may look super easy but in reality, it makes students want to quit at times. While at rehearsal,
there is so much going on and the band director is constantly stopping between runs to fix the
smallest things. If the band director calls someone out on a mistake they made, the band director
will stop the entire band until that person gets it right. It is very crucial to fix if the band wants to get
a good score at competitions because every mistake goes noticed. There is a judge for every part of
the show, including music, visuals, and marching technique so chances are, a judge will see your
mistake and mark the band off for

The Origins Of The Percussion Family
Examining the Origins of the Percussion Family
To get a clear view of the origins of the percussion family, one should first have to the ability to
classify the plethora of instruments. For the sake of this document we will use the broad
classification of Janissary instruments and non–Janissary instruments. The Janissary instruments
find their roots in the Turkish military bands of the Ottoman Empire. The term Janissary refers to the
Turkish Yeñi–çeri, or "new troops". Sultan Orkhan I, of the Ottoman Empire, created The

This is most likely the influence of the Crusades that would have brought Arabic culture, albeit in a
violent way, to Europe.
Timpani, as aforementioned, hold an intrinsically military tradition. Because of its use in the Turkish
armies, the Europe borrowed the instrument in its armies. These influences can be seen in the
earliest uses of timpani. The timpani that were taken from the Arabs were made into an essential
element of prestige for the nobility. During the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries both trumpeters and
kettle drummer were restricted to only those of high rank or nobility. This lead to the creation of an
exclusive guild to train the instrumentalists. This lead to a surplus of players, especially after the last
failed Siege of Vienna in 1683 CE. Due to this surplus, the Classical period, when timpani were
used on a regular basis, began to use timpani in a limited fashion. In combination with the trumpets,
the timpani mostly played rhythmically driving music. This is best observed in Handel's Messiah.
During the Hallelujah Chorus the trumpets and timpani can be easily heard playing the same
material. This pairing is not coincidental, both instruments had a high amount of military
background during the time of Handel. So, the pairing would have observed that military tradition,
but this military tradition followed the Eastern custom of pairing trumpet with timpani. It is
important to note that this trend among the Classical composers to use timpani

The Importance Of Marching Band
What is Marching Band? Marching band is not what people think. It strains your body and takes a
lot of hard work. An example of a practice would be, when you get there you start out by getting
into stretch block. While you are in stretch block, You might feel like you get harassed and annoyed
by the leadership. Then after you do that you go and tune with your particular section. Then, you go
back to music warm up. Finally you to practice. The most popular quote you hear, is when the Band
director says one more time, it is not really one more time. Onto leadership.
There are many different leadership positions in band to make the band run smoothly. The positions
are: Drum major, Band Captain, Lieutenant, Brass/Woodwind Captain, Section Leader, and
Librarian. The Drum Major is responsible for conducting the Raider Regiment in all rehearsals and
performances. They oversee uniform inspections, keeps time during breaks and transition time, and
oversees cleanliness of facilities. They are the most important part of leadership. The band Captain
Oversees program operations and reports to the Band Director. The band captain supports Section
Captains in their responsibilities, they supervise events, reports damage to the Director, plans and
conducts student leadership meetings with Director oversight. They oversee program operations in
the absence of a full–time Band Director. They basically would run the band if the Band direction
left. The lieutenant is the assistant

At the start of the movie we are told that Christoph, the main character's, father had died and his
Uncle Curt decided to rent out the top room of Christoph's house to Mr. Beethoven since the room
was a studio. Uncle Curt did this to help the family pay their bills.
As soon as Mr. Beethoven moves in it is clear that he is a short tempered man and starts off badly
with the maid Sophie. Mr. Beethoven is deaf, so he is humming a lot and causes a lot of noise.
Soon Mr. Beethoven and Christophe become somewhat friends and the two are better off from it.
Throughout the movie Mr. Schindler, Mr. Beethoven's good friend, comes and visits and comforts
Mr. Beethoven.
Mid way through the movie Mr. Beethoven and Christophe go for a walk and talk. Mr. Beethoven

Music And Education : The Benefits Of Music Education
Music Education "Music is about communication, creativity, and cooperation, and by studying

requirements and skills necessary for the job, advantages and disadvantages of teaching music to
children, and how concert band and marching band differ from each other. Becoming a band

Why Students Join Band In Middle School
A student who joins band or choir is most likely joining to try something new. Many students join to
learn new skills like discipline or to sing/play an instrument. Along with learning a new skill,
students can learn leadership abilities and time management. At Hebron Middle School, band/choir
classes are important to many students. Although many students join band/choir, many do not find
an interest or need to withdraw from the class. In many schools, 100% of students join band/choir
and about 1–2 years later, at least 50% quit. With all of these reasons of which a student may join
band or choir, it still is not enough to keep everyone in the class. The current rule for a student in
band/choir who wishes to withdraw is very strict and must be taken into consideration to keep
band/choir classes organized. "A student who joins band or choir is obligated to complete the school
year in that program. If a student wishes to withdraw from band or choir, they must wait until the
semester ends to get out." With the current rule, if a student leaves, it may cause an interruption in
the class. This is a big problem with students who wish to withdraw from band/choir and may cause
more to leave. Since so many students are leaving band/choir each year, the existing rule needs to be
taken into consideration. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

to get help with academic classes. With the drastic amount of students that withdraw from
band/choir after a couple years, many more students may leave band/choir if this rule is not

Timpani In Haydn's Music Essay
Timpani in Haydn's Music Franz Joseph Haydn, born March 31, 1732, is one of the most influential
classical composers. Being known as the "Father of Symphony," is an important reason to look at
his work. Focusing closely on his use of timpani in two of his major pieces, "Symphony 103" and
"Missa in tempore belli," can give us an in depth look on his development with the use of timpani.
By first starting at looking at his lifetime, then delving into both pieces, next comparing and
contrasting the two pieces, and finally, briefly going over other pieces influenced by the use of
timpani will give us a better understanding. Franz Joseph Haydn, better known as Joseph Haydn,
was born in Austria in 1732. When Haydn was eight years old, he became a choirboy in Vienna.
After his voice had matured, he became a teenage freelance musician. After some time had passed, a
noble family in Vienna, the Esterházy's, hired him to composed for them. From 1761 until about
1790 he worked for the Esterházy family composing instrumental works and opera's for their
summer palace performances. When Haydn had finished working for the Esterházy family, he was
well–known throughout Europe and considered by some as the greatest living composer at that time.

Marching Band Traditions Never Change
Some Traditions Never Change
Marching band is a culture that many people in the world participate in whether they're in high
school or college. Members of any marching bands share characteristics such as hard work, the
strength to keep going when things are hard and to stay calm under pressure. Power is distributed in
the group from the marching band director to the drum major and to the section leader. Many people
think marching band is something anybody could do with ease, but we practice day to day, which
means we practice two hours and five minutes to learn the show. The common nickname is being
called 'band nerds' which I think is fitting because we live for it. Band is more than a hobby – it's a
sport because of all the time we practice. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Besides Hawaii I would probably rate band camp as one of the best things about being in the
marching band. At band camp, I created memories that will last a lifetime form doing our last eight
to five marches as a senior class to the bonfire for the seniors and listening to all the stories past
down from previous groups. The first thing we do when we get to band camp is go over the agenda
for the year and the songs we will play including the run on and pregame activities. Next, we go to
our first practice which was from six to nine just to refresh on the basic eight to five and so on. As a
section leader this is important because you want to make sure that your section is stepping and
landing with the right foot. Through many late nights playing cards with the chaperones getting up
at seven isn't always the easiest. Were lucky enough to have great cooks at the camp. Being seniors,
we get to pick the meals and the desserts they make. Thirdly, it is usually very hot for band camp,
meaning that we get lots of water breaks, but that means we also get ice pops. As a band we try to
learn the show in three to four days and learn the run on by that Friday. When Saturday rolls around
seniors take their last look around and take one last run through the show to clean up any little
mistakes. When we get back from the camp we perform for the whole town on what we learned. I
probably miss band camp the most out of all the high school activities I participated in. I was lucky

Why Should Marching Band Be Considered A Sport
Kaiyah Wilhite
Argumentative Essay
Should marching band be considered a sport? Yes, it should. Being a member for one year, and
having completed the season, I speak from experience. There are so many things to learn in the
season, like body movements and music. We also had to learn all eighty–four sets, which is where to
go while we are marching. Having to learn all of this takes hard work, time, and a lot of money. This
is why band should be considered a sport.
The definition of sport is "an athletic activity requiring skill or physical activity and often of a
competitive nature." Marching band includes all of the above. The student playing must have skill to
play, move, and memorize all at the same time. There are physical activities such as jazz running,
body movements, and marching in general. Some students say this is the most competitive team
they have ever been a part of. That is another thing about being a sport, students are a team pulled
together as one. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We practice for countless hours in a season. Some marching bands practice up to 300 hours per
season! Basketball, soccer, tennis, all of these most people would consider sports. These sports
practice no where near the span of time marching band pupils do.
One of the reasons band should count as a sport is because of the sweat. I am not talking about how
much students sweat in basketball or tennis. I am talking specifically about band sweat. This means
sweat dripping off your chin, clothes soaked to the point where you could ring out the sweat and
reuse it. Yes, it becomes that bad. Sweat means physical activity, and anything to do with physical

My Experience In The School Band
For the past three and a half years I have been in the school band. I've taken part in the concert band,
marching band, and I even took jazz band. It all began when I set up my schedule for sixth grade. I
knew I wanted to be in band for a very long time, but I had no idea what I should play. Just a few
weeks before sixth grade, when it was time to build my schedule, I was still struggling with what I
wanted to try. Finally just before we turned in the form, my mom suggested I attempt playing
percussion. It was like a switch had been flipped. I found what I was meant to play. Percussion
instruments are all instruments played by striking with the hand, beater, pedal operated or handheld
stick, or by shaking or cranking. Percussion instruments include drums, cymbals, keyed instruments,
and all sorts of rattles. It didn't even cross my mind that a mostly boys would be interested in
playing drums until the first day of school when I saw who was in the section with me. The first
year was very exciting but looking back on it I had no idea how much better it would get. That time
was just an introduction to everything that was to come. We spent the 180 day school year learning
to count rhythms, read notes, play the notes, and use proper technique. At that time they only let us
play bells. All the songs were simple, but I thought it was fantastic. I was constantly battling Reuben
Daniels for first chair. We both had an aptitude for percussion instruments. Back then there was one

Introduction
Mickey Hart once said, "Life is about rhythm. We vibrate, our hearts are pumping blood, we are a
rhythm machine, that's what we are." Percussion is one of the oldest instrument families and has
grown to a degree of vast importance in all forms of modern Western music. Namely, this is because
of the incorporation of percussion into both academia and entertainment music. At first, percussion
was introduced into Western Classical music during the Classical period, as a means of getting
exotic and unusual sounds for composers; however, the twentieth century works brought a unique
gravitation to percussion. Twentieth century composers, such as Edgar Varese and John Cage,
helped pave a way for an era of music history marked by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

during the Crusades, which depicts two "long trumpets" and a pair of mounted "kettledrums" with
battle flags and standards. The date of this manuscript indicates the Arabic and Persian heritages of
one of the major instruments in the Janissary classification, the Timpani. In addition, the Ottoman
Expansionism throughout the 1600's gave the Western world a large amount of exposure to the
Turkish military band music and instruments. Countless militarily effective instruments were carried
into Western armies, such as the Cavalry Kettledrums, or Timpani.

Analysis Of Scne Aux Champs
The third movement is entitled Scène aux champs, or "scene in the fields." This pastoral setting
alludes to Beethoven's Am Bach from his sixth symphony, although with less serenity as Berlioz
creates a "mood of sorrowful loneliness." The piece is, like the second movement, in ABA form,
with the idée fix attached at the end as a coda. The movement begins "with an echo from Berlioz's
childhood: the sound of a cowherd's melody. Berlioz uses the huge orchestra to create the sense of
suspension of time that intimacy can bring." This cowherd's melody is a shepherd call, in which the
English horn and oboe call out to one another. The oboe responds from offstage, a device borrowed
from theatre. Then, the idée fixe comes in on flutes and oboes, set against the 6/8 meter of the
movement, and more instruments join in, painting the anguish of the young artist. After an
"orchestral outburst, the idée fixe returns with the English horn again calling out, but there is no
response from the oboe, instead, the "shepherd" is answered by the rumbling of thunder, musically
illustrated by the timpani, which plays unusual minor chords.
The first theme of the fourth movement is entitled March un supplice or "March to the Scaffold,"
which Macdonald describes as "alternatively sinister and brazen." This movement appears in rondo
form. The first theme shows the hero's "hollow footsteps" to the guillotine by a two–octave
descending scale in the cellos and basses, which then is repeated in different

Susan Botti, Jennifer Higdon, and Cindy McTee
This paper will discuss the works of Susan Botti, Jennifer Higdon and Cindy McTee, three women
composers of the 21st Century, and how they influenced composition with their tonal structures,
melodic inventions, unique compositional techniques, along with innovations in notation, and
rhythmic intricacy. I will be analyzing Concerto for Orchestra by Higdon and Echo Tempo by Botti.
Singer and composer, Susan Botti, studied music at a rather young age. Her musical training
officially started when she entered the Cleveland Institute of Music as a high school student (Slayton
54). She then graduated with a bachelor of music degree from Berklee College of Music (Boston,
MA) in 1984 (Slayton 54). Once graduating from Berklee, Botti continued her studies at the
Manhattan School of Music (New York, NY), where she received a master of music degree in
composition in 1990 (Slayton 54). In 2000, she received an offer as the associate professor of music
composition at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (Slayton 54). While at Michigan, she taught
with William Bolcom, Michael Daugherty and Bright Sheng. In 2007, Susan Botti left her position
at Michigan to move back to New York City, and began teaching, as a member of the composition
faculty, at the Manhattan School of Music (Slayton 55). Susan Botti's Echo Tempo, is a double

Personal Narrative: Band March Off
Over the last six years I've heard marching commands over a thousand times. They are easy to
execute when called separately, but slightly harder when called continuously. The march off has
been a tradition in the band for the last forty years. Always on the parking lot at exactly 11:45 just
fifteen minutes before lunch. When asked what a march off is, the best way I can describe it is as a
giant game of Simon Says but with marching commands.
"Left hace, right hace, half left hace, half left hace, half about hace," calls the drum major in under
ten seconds.
"As you were," responds the remaining band members in the march off. Every member hanging on
the drum major's every word. I think to myself "Don't mess up. You made it this far, you might ...

First seventeenth place, then fourteenth place, and then twelfth place. I was getting closer by the day

was ready for the first march off. It's 11:45 and everyone is on the field preparing for the first

Anne Marie Hochhalter Research Paper
Anne Marie Hochhalter used to be a self–described "band dork." She spent most of her time playing
clarinet in Columbine High School's marching band and wind symphony, and–because she was shy–
Anne Marie didn't stray far beyond the band's practice room when making friends. Part of Anne
Marie's shyness stemmed from her self–consciousness. She loathed the ugly glasses, braces, and
lanky build she still sported as a high school upperclassman.
Though she felt more comfortable being in the background, the national spotlight is where Anne
Marie landed 10 years ago after two classmates whom she hardly knew tried to kill her outside
Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo., while she was eating lunch with friends. Two bullets
fired by Eric Harris's TEC–9 semi–automatic weapon hit Hochhalter. One pierced her chest; the
other, her spinal cord. She survived, thanks to a four–hour–long surgery, and lives today as a
paraplegic. But the horrific incident began Hochhalter's transformation from an introverted teen into
an outgoing, self–sufficient woman who has developed the strength to move past both the shooting
and the personal tragedies she suffered because of it. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Unforgettable Memories Of A Band
Unforgettable memories Marching band and band camp is a sport that brings memories of a lifetime.
Three years of marching band have taught be so much in such little time.while to others they say
marching band is not a sport unfortunately they were most likely not in marching band. Let's start at
band camp through the years. Our marching band camp has been hosted at the beautiful Edinboro
University for the past three years. It has been such a privilege and an experience to go away for
once and spend a week away from home. This is the week where we learn each and every
fundamental that will be featured in our show and learning the marching basics. Breaking It down
day by day for nine hours with breaks in between each day until performance night. We have
marched in very humid hot weather to rainy and cold weather. Anything that gets in the way we
plow right through.
Let rewind a little bit and take it back to my freshman year. Good ole Freshie year, was terrifying.
Starting out with a new band director, Mr Florjancic that we have never seen before was scary. I
think the first time all of us met him was at a car wash and the few minutes we thought he was just
another upperclassmen band geek! Monday rolled around, we soon realized, oh he was our band
director. Never less we soon warmed up to him being our director. We had started our first week of
practice at the high school, which I didn't know what to do. I really didn't know anyone or anything I

Band Section Leader

  • 1. Band Section Leader A marching band is composed of people, playing musical instruments, usually during the halftime portion of a football game, to perform songs arranged by various artists. The band is divided into sections. A section is determined by the instrument one plays. Each section must have a leader. A section leader is one or more people who give rules for other members of the section to follow. While trying to become the best section leader ever, one must develop social skills, a positive attitude, and determination. The first step in being a great section leader is to have prodigious social skills. Being social means that a person is able to communicate effectively with people without conflict. In my opinion, a section leader needs to be social in order to give instructions and receive positive feedback from other section members. If the leader of a certain section is not able to communicate well, things will not run as effectively as the band director desires. Being social also means on enjoys the companionship that comes along with being a leader. I feel that if a leader is not able to make a personal connection with the person in ... When everyone else has that "I don't care," or "I don't want" attitude, it is the section leaders job to reassure or encourage the individual to do the right thing and follow directions as her or she was told. Often times, the section members need that extra little push to keep striving to be the best the best marcher they can be, and because of the section leaders optimistic yet constructive attitude, it is easy for section members to respond positively. In my first year in band, I looked up to my section leaders because I knew that if I needed help with anything on the marching field, they would not mind helping me. Sometimes, because of their jolly attitudes, section leaders were known as the happiest members of the entire ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I marched alto saxophone when I was in the seventh, eighth, and ninth grades and I have been drum major (also known as field commander) since my sophomore year of high school. Having this job has been a huge responsibility, but it has also given me invaluable learning and leadership experience. There are very few positions in high school, or even as a teenager in general, that can offer such excellent leadership experience as serving as drum major. The role of a drum major is to conduct a marching band, essentially serving as a metronome to set the tempo for the group. While this is my ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. The Princess Bride: An Analysis Of Marching Band Marching band is a social and collaborative effort at its core. As fun as it would be, a one–person marching band would consist of an exhausted player trying to trapeze across a football field carrying a bass drum, trumpet, tuba, snare drum, flute, bells, and cymbals in a contraption reminiscent of the life–draining machine in The Princess Bride. Every time I walk onto the grass in front of a crowd of semi–apathetic high school students and devoted band parents, pushing an array of wooden blocks and twine sticks, I realize how much of band is a group effort. I have no ability to march or play a brass instrument, which is where marching band started. I cannot throw a flag and guarantee that it won't hit A: myself, B: someone else, or C: ... • 13. The Drum Research Paper The drums are one of humanities oldest musical instrument and, like all instruments, the drums continue existing to this day as a method of communication. Previously drumming was often used as a social mediator, played to bring together the community and act as a vehicle in carrying messages and stories, alongside ceremonial use. However, within the last century, the drums have morphed radically into their current potential purpose and capabilities. Drifting from their roots as a vehicle for the community into its very own art, and modern drumming is undeniably an art, requiring immense dedication and devotion to actualise a drummer's potential. Similar to other musical instruments as art forms, the drums allow for a high capacity to incorporate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Dynamics refers to the level of force used on the drum in order to create the desired volume. Dynamics is necessary in all drumming in directing attention and suggesting what the audience should be doing, thinking, feeling, etc., etc. The volume level is obviously different for the macrosystem of drumming like the style and genre that's encompassing the music. Aloud and heavy four–on–the–floor wouldn't suit jazz as that's not what's trying to be conveyed, instead "feathering" is a more common jazz use of the kick drum which involves lighter hit so it's not pronounced and oppressive to the rest of the music; however, this heavy beat would be perfect for house or disco as it is much easier to dance to at a nightclub, which is exactly what the drummer is going for in this setting. This demonstrates dynamics relationship to the type of music, but it also varies within the microsystem – the individuals input – of the drumming, on a beat–by–beat basis. The drummer again has to judge and monitor what volume level they assume is appropriate, this refers to all of the strokes but also individual hits to accentuate specific parts. This is a necessary part of microsystemic drumming as accents is responsible for a lot of direction of where the music is going. It can build a crescendo in a fill or ease a diminuendo, which may signify that a change is about to happen. This has room for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Modern Day Drum Research Paper The modern day drum set has various parts to it. You have the drums, which include the: bass drum, snare drum, rack tom or toms, and floor tom or toms. Then you have the cymbals. There are eight different types of cymbals that can go into a drum set. They are the hi–hats, the ride cymbal, the crash cymbal, the crash–ride cymbal, the china cymbal, the splash cymbal, the effects cymbal, and the bell. Each of these cymbals give off many different sounds. The most important part of your drum set is your cymbals because they are the voice. The drums only make one sound when you hit them. • 21. The Drums Album Summertime The Drums are an American indie pop band from Brooklyn, New York. When the group moved from Kissimmee, Florida to New York, they immediately got the attention of the indie world when their album Summertime was released. The album Summertime is a collection of beach pop fantasy with tracks that are filled with sentimental yearning that really sweeps over an individual. They became an irresistible and popular band in the summer of 2009. The Summertime record has become the perfect upbeat and post–punk summer fling album to have. The founding members of The Drums are Jonny Pierce and Jacob Graham who have been friends since they were children. Several years after being friends they created a short lived electro pop group called Goat Explosion. Afterwards Jonny Pierce developed the Elkland group and Jacob Graham formed the Horse Shoes group. When Elkland parted ways in May 2006 Jonny decided to stop creating music for a few years. In 2008 Jonny and Jacob met back up and created the group The Drums. At that time they hired drummer Conner Hanwick and guitarist Adam Kessler. In October of 2009 their very first album was released called Summertime. In September 2010 it was broadcasted that Adam Kessler had left the band. According to the remaining members it was devastating at first when Kessler left with no clear circumstances. This in turn introduced Chris Stein on drums and Myles Matheny doing backup vocals as well as guitar. A couple of weeks later Pierce announced the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This artifact was used as a musical instrument and as a sculpture, which was significant for numerous ceremonies such as dance, rituals, story – telling, and communicating messages. Devotional songs were also sung throughout the night (Ancient Artifax). Who did it belong to (what social class)? This artifact belonged to the Chamba tribe of Northern Nigeria. How old is it? The Chamba drum dates back to the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Where was it found? The artifact was found in the present–day borderline between the Cameroon and Nigeria (Ancient Artifax). What does it tell you about this particular civilization? The Chamba drums tell me that music and dance in Africa was a significant part of their lifestyle and played an important role in many momentous ceremonies. With knowledge about this artifact it is easier to visualize what rituals resembled and what values and traditions their culture had. Additionally, it showcases some of the events that took place in this civilization. The Chamba tribe considered music to be quite significant and relied on it for special occasions. At the beginning of my freshman year, I had the privilege of attending a Wisconsin Badger game at Camp Randall and it was an awesome experience. I have long forgotten the logistics of the game itself, but I still remember the marching band. With their high knees perfectly in step, their tight spins perfectly in time, and their shining silver instruments perfectly in position, the excitement they brought to the crowd was undeniable. Usually consisting of the band playing music, people cheering, and the athletes being praised for their hard work and wished good luck, pep assemblies are a lot of fun and a good way to come together and get excited about something. However, athletes these days always receive full attention, and are provided all the support they need in order to be successful, whether it's physical or psychological. What about other sport like activities, such as concert and pep band? I consider band to be like a sport, though not many people do. Like athletes, we practice every day, learn new techniques, and cooperate with other peers to achieve one main goal. So why isn't there any assemblies focusing on the accomplishments, and contest to come, for all the musically talented kids in our school. • 37. Timpani Research Paper The timpani is a percussion instrument with the longest tradition. It's been used in a variety of music: ranging from music to symbolize the power of monarchs to church music. The tuning of the instrument has changed throughout it's lifespan. First from not being able to tune them at all, to having large, awkward screws, to having an operating pedal on the bottom to change the tension of the head (Tucmandl). The way performers tune this drum has always been improved, making it easier on the performer when on stage. The next step to improve the efficiency of tuning was made with a new way to tune, with electronics. Recently, inventor David Byrd Ribner has created a tuning and pitch control system for the timpani. This makes it almost automatic, and also makes it extremely easier for a timpanist to perform on the spot. The control system uses a position sensor that specifies a reference value corresponding to a desired timpani pitch. Then it uses a control unit applies a force on the timpani head, determining a deviation between a measured pitch value ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After a few times, it becomes easier as one knows the zone more. With the device, one can see the comparison by flicking with their eyes open, and also having two chances to flick it, since the device tells the timpanist what the pitch is and also how they need to change the pedal. This creates the obvious simplicity the device makes to the timpanist, especially when ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 45. Analysis Of The Planets By Gustav Theodore Holst Gustav Theodore Holst was born on September 21st, 1874 and died on May 25th, 1934 he was an English composer and teacher. He was best known for The Planets suite, this composition became famous internationally after World War One. The Planets was composed from 1914 to 1916, it had seven movements, each of the movements had the Astrological traits of the planets but had no connections to mythology. The first movement of the suite is Mars Bringer of War which refers to the God of War. This movement includes various instruments such as tubas, trumpets, trombones, horns, timpani, flutes, clarinets, violins, cellos, and snare drums. The movement was characterized by five beats and a minor scale which indicates the opposite of happy. There is no harmonic purpose in the Bringer of War piece, I would classify it as an inhuman piece of work because war is horrific, insensible at all costs. The music was suspenseful and tormenting since the beginning, it had a fast tempo throughout the whole movement. Many dynamics were used all the way through, when the movement was finishing up many rests kept showing as if war came to an end or was coming to an end. Mars, Bringer of War gave me an utterly angry, threatening vibe, the combination of the rhythms, the vibrato of the string instruments and the beats of the drum gave the whole movement a military essence. Although I believe that the rhythm, in the beginning, was not the same in the end it somehow slightly changed. Gustav creates ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Setting up my schedule in sixth grade kicked off the adventure. Since a very young age, I had been certain I would be in band. There was, however, one major problem. Choosing what to play was unfathomable. Only a few weeks prior to sixth–grade year, when it was time to build my schedule, I was still in toil trying to figure out what to try. Finally, just before we handed over the schedule form, my mother said, "You are always tapping on things why don't you join the percussion section." Uttering those words, she flipped a switch within me. I knew what was meant to play. Percussion instruments are all instruments played by striking with the hand, beater, pedal operated or handheld stick, or by shaking or cranking. Included in these are drums, cymbals, keyed instruments, and all sorts of rattles. Surprised, on the first day of school I had a realization; mostly boys would be interested in playing drums. Great glee came with the first year, but looking back on it, I had no idea how exceptional it would become. Used as an introduction for what was to come, we spent the 180 days learning to count rhythms, read notes, play the notes and rhythms, and use proper technique. At that time they only allowed us to play bells. All of the songs were simple and bland, but I was ecstatic. In good sportsmanship, I was constantly battling ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The next decision I faced was the important choice of an instrument, which was not very hard for me. I chose the clarinet because it was the only one that responded with a grateful sound. Without my license and parents working late at night, I had to search for a ride since I assumed my friend, who attended band on a different day, could take me. Getting up an hour earlier than most students proved to be a struggle for me, but as time went on it became less challenging. Joining band was and is more than a musical exercise for me; it equates unity with harmony, personal growth with rhythm, and benefits with melody on the larger playing field of life. Harmony is defined as the combination of sounds to produce chords which can be compared to the coming together first of my instrument and me and the two of us with the band. My clarinet and ... When we finally approached the field my hands were shaking. They announced the name of our band as I was attempting to calm my nerves. We started the show and it all went smoothly until the drum feature. Despite what I thought would happen, I played perfectly but the snare player to my left dropped his stick. My heart sunk because there was a judge within a few feet of us watching intently. I was sure he would have to change to a new pair of sticks which would throw the rest of us off. The Concert Is Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique The concert is Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique, performed by The Chicago Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Stéphane Denève, recorded in high definition at Orchestra Hall in December 2013. Symphonie Fantastique composed in 1845, by Hector Berlioz (1803–1869), is a program symphony; a five movement orchestral work that tells the story described by the CSO (2013) "as a purely musical melodrama", a colorful illustration of the life of an artist, "replete with unrequited love, witches, guillotines and colorful, opium–induced hallucinations". Its composer, Hector Berlioz at the age of twenty–seven wrote "Symphonie Fantastique both to explore German Romanticism and to give his hometown of Paris a symphony of its own; something not yet native to this city of operas and ballets" (CSO, 2013). Berlioz's symphonic back ground in the operatic overture alludes to his program notes presented "as the spoken text of an opera". The memorable dramatic flair of Symphonie Fantastique is understood to be one of the most well–known pieces of program music in his repertoire and is suggested that the story is a self–portrait of its composer, Hector Berlioz. Innovative the time, Berlioz devised a program to be given out to audience members at the performances stating it is "indispensable for a complete understanding of the dramatic outline of the work." • 77. Four Pieces For Timpani Essay Music has always been part of our daily lives, rooted in our culture and contributing to our development. Listening to and playing music allows us to experience a wide range of emotions including pleasure, joy, sadness, angst etc; it touches us at a subconscious level and influences life changing experiences. In my opinion the rhythms used in music are comparable to the rhythms in our speech and communication. In this paper, the link between rhythms and speech will be identified using the rhythmic qualities of the following pieces: Earth Dance by Bill Douglas; The Recital Snare Drum Suite by William J. Schinstine and Four Pieces for Timpani by John Bergamo as a medium to do so. Rhythm is everywhere. Its exists in nature, in traffic, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I believe that in the name of the piece itself there is a deeper meaning. If we look at the name Four Pieces "FOR" Timpani with the emphasis on the word "FOR", this implies that he didn't intentionally compose the piece for an audience but for each Timpano by its self. He named the first movement, Recitative. Recitative according to the oxford dictionary means, "A musical declamation of the kind usually in the narrative and dialogue parts of Operas, sung in the rhythms of ordinary speech with many words on the same note." So by taking this definition into consideration, the way he composed and structured the first movement shows a dialog between each drum. A lot of the rhythmic groups are usually started on one drum and eventually moves to the other drums as if it were a call and answer. Human beings as I mentioned earlier speaks within a rhythm or rhythmic structure, this can me seen using the concept of Audiation, some examples are as follows using groupings that are present in the piece; *Triplets – "Beautiful" *Sixteenth notes – "Peanut Butter" *Quintuplets – "Hippopotamus" *Eight notes – ... We started in a timeline beginning at the very first instrument ever, the heart. The heart was the very first "beat" and clave was formed based on this "beat". Clave is the foundation of almost every Latin song and most songs found around the world. Developed in Africa as one the earliest beats, clave was played on one of the first instruments, the Bongo drums. All drums are based after this drum which is still widely used in Africa for celebrations among tribes. The Bongo drums were made, originally, from wood and cowhide. The Clavichord instrument is one of the oldest string instruments and is only capable of producing a small sound. The ones used, mainly, in an orchestra are as follow: Violin (fiddle), Viola, Cello, and the Double Bass. A violin can also be called a fiddle as it is usually called in folk music. The viola is a fretless instrument and, thus, harder to play. Other popular string instruments are the acoustic guitar whose origin dates back thousands of years in Greek, Sanskrit, and Arabic cultures. Some examples of guitar–like instruments are the Dotar (two strings), the Setar (three strings), the Qithara (four strings), the Panchtar (five strings), and the Tamber, which is the ancestor of the modern day guitar. Acoustic instruments don't generally have a need for amplification and is not electric. The very first guitars consisted of six strings. Persuasive Essay: Why Marching Band Is A Sport The definition of a sport is an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment. Many people question whether or not marching band is a sport. Although some people may think it is nothing like a sport, many other people do consider it one. Marching band should be considered a sport because you need both physical and mental strength and skills. Marching band should be considered a sport because the difficulty is equal to any other sport both mentally and physically. Some students need to carry an instrument up to 30 pounds with perfect posture. Before rehearsal, students also have to warm up, do stretches, and even run. Students have to be able to memorize notes, dots, and stay in step with the entire band. In order to do these things, students have to be super concentrated and must constantly practice. This is most likely the influence of the Crusades that would have brought Arabic culture, albeit in a violent way, to Europe. Timpani, as aforementioned, hold an intrinsically military tradition. Because of its use in the Turkish armies, the Europe borrowed the instrument in its armies. These influences can be seen in the earliest uses of timpani. The timpani that were taken from the Arabs were made into an essential element of prestige for the nobility. During the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries both trumpeters and kettle drummer were restricted to only those of high rank or nobility. This lead to the creation of an exclusive guild to train the instrumentalists. This lead to a surplus of players, especially after the last failed Siege of Vienna in 1683 CE. Due to this surplus, the Classical period, when timpani were used on a regular basis, began to use timpani in a limited fashion. In combination with the trumpets, the timpani mostly played rhythmically driving music. This is best observed in Handel's Messiah. During the Hallelujah Chorus the trumpets and timpani can be easily heard playing the same material. This pairing is not coincidental, both instruments had a high amount of military background during the time of Handel. So, the pairing would have observed that military tradition, but this military tradition followed the Eastern custom of pairing trumpet with timpani. It is important to note that this trend among the Classical composers to use timpani ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Many students join to learn new skills like discipline or to sing/play an instrument. Along with learning a new skill, students can learn leadership abilities and time management. At Hebron Middle School, band/choir classes are important to many students. Although many students join band/choir, many do not find an interest or need to withdraw from the class. In many schools, 100% of students join band/choir and about 1–2 years later, at least 50% quit. With all of these reasons of which a student may join band or choir, it still is not enough to keep everyone in the class. Being known as the "Father of Symphony," is an important reason to look at his work. Focusing closely on his use of timpani in two of his major pieces, "Symphony 103" and "Missa in tempore belli," can give us an in depth look on his development with the use of timpani. By first starting at looking at his lifetime, then delving into both pieces, next comparing and contrasting the two pieces, and finally, briefly going over other pieces influenced by the use of timpani will give us a better understanding. Franz Joseph Haydn, better known as Joseph Haydn, was born in Austria in 1732. When Haydn was eight years old, he became a choirboy in Vienna. We also had to learn all eighty–four sets, which is where to go while we are marching. Having to learn all of this takes hard work, time, and a lot of money. This is why band should be considered a sport. The definition of sport is "an athletic activity requiring skill or physical activity and often of a competitive nature." Marching band includes all of the above. The student playing must have skill to play, move, and memorize all at the same time. This pastoral setting alludes to Beethoven's Am Bach from his sixth symphony, although with less serenity as Berlioz creates a "mood of sorrowful loneliness." The piece is, like the second movement, in ABA form, with the idée fix attached at the end as a coda. The movement begins "with an echo from Berlioz's childhood: the sound of a cowherd's melody. Berlioz uses the huge orchestra to create the sense of suspension of time that intimacy can bring." This cowherd's melody is a shepherd call, in which the English horn and oboe call out to one another. The oboe responds from offstage, a device borrowed from theatre. Then, the idée fixe comes in on flutes and oboes, set against the 6/8 meter of the movement, and more instruments join in, painting the anguish of the young artist. After an "orchestral outburst, the idée fixe returns with the English horn again calling out, but there is no response from the oboe, instead, the "shepherd" is answered by the rumbling of thunder, musically illustrated by the timpani, which plays unusual minor chords. The first theme of the fourth movement is entitled March un supplice or "March to the Scaffold," which Macdonald describes as "alternatively sinister and brazen." This movement appears in rondo form. I will be analyzing Concerto for Orchestra by Higdon and Echo Tempo by Botti. Singer and composer, Susan Botti, studied music at a rather young age. Her musical training officially started when she entered the Cleveland Institute of Music as a high school student (Slayton 54). She then graduated with a bachelor of music degree from Berklee College of Music (Boston, MA) in 1984 (Slayton 54). Once graduating from Berklee, Botti continued her studies at the Manhattan School of Music (New York, NY), where she received a master of music degree in composition in 1990 (Slayton 54). In 2000, she received an offer as the associate professor of music composition at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (Slayton 54). They are easy to execute when called separately, but slightly harder when called continuously. The march off has been a tradition in the band for the last forty years. Always on the parking lot at exactly 11:45 just fifteen minutes before lunch. When asked what a march off is, the best way I can describe it is as a giant game of Simon Says but with marching commands. "Left hace, right hace, half left hace, half left hace, half about hace," calls the drum major in under ten seconds. "As you were," responds the remaining band members in the march off. Every member hanging on the drum major's every word. I think to myself "Don't mess up. You made it this far, you might ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... My goal is to just make it into the top ten one more time. If I did it my junior year, I knew I could do it my senior year. I spent hours learning all the commands so I wouldn't be tricked by any. I was more than prepared to make it into the top ten. The first couple of days were my warm up days as I only made it into the top thirty. Everyday I worked harder and harder as I made my way to the top. First seventeenth place, then fourteenth place, and then twelfth place. I was getting closer by the day to make it into the top ten. Everyday I would go to band thinking "this is the day that I am going to work my hardest and make it into the top ten." We finally made it to the second week of camp and I was ready for the first march off. It's 11:45 and everyone is on the field preparing for the first command. The drum major calls a string of challenging to commands to try to fake out the band. As the minutes go by the members seem to get out faster and faster. It is finally down to the last fifteen remaining members. The drum majors line us up and begin to do a walk down line to see if any of us make eye contact with them or flinch. I have perfected my stare and never get out on it. I think to myself "this is great, if enough people get out on this then I'll make it into the top ten." Sure enough four of the remaining members get out. The whole process takes about three minutes of continuous starring straight into the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 149. Anne Marie Hochhalter Research Paper Anne Marie Hochhalter used to be a self–described "band dork." She spent most of her time playing clarinet in Columbine High School's marching band and wind symphony, and–because she was shy– Anne Marie didn't stray far beyond the band's practice room when making friends. Part of Anne Marie's shyness stemmed from her self–consciousness. She loathed the ugly glasses, braces, and lanky build she still sported as a high school upperclassman. Though she felt more comfortable being in the background, the national spotlight is where Anne Marie landed 10 years ago after two classmates whom she hardly knew tried to kill her outside Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo., while she was eating lunch with friends. Two bullets fired by Eric Harris's TEC–9 semi–automatic weapon hit Hochhalter. One pierced her chest; the other, her spinal cord. She survived, thanks to a four–hour–long surgery, and lives today as a paraplegic. But the horrific incident began Hochhalter's transformation from an introverted teen into an outgoing, self–sufficient woman who has developed the strength to move past both the shooting and the personal tragedies she suffered because of it. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even when she saw deep red liquid appear on the clothing of students who had been shot, she assumed the color was coming from red paint balls. The senior class would graduate in a few weeks, and she figured the sounds were part of someone's senior prank. When she saw another student collapse on the sidewalk after being shot, she realized the truth. Before she could get up to run away, Hochhalter felt a stinging in her back. As she turned to identify the cause, she realized that she couldn't feel anything from her chest ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Three years of marching band have taught be so much in such little time.while to others they say marching band is not a sport unfortunately they were most likely not in marching band. Let's start at band camp through the years. Our marching band camp has been hosted at the beautiful Edinboro University for the past three years. It has been such a privilege and an experience to go away for once and spend a week away from home. This is the week where we learn each and every fundamental that will be featured in our show and learning the marching basics. Breaking It down day by day for nine hours with breaks in between each day until performance night. We have marched in very humid hot weather to rainy and cold weather. Anything that gets in the way we plow right through. Let rewind a little bit and take it back to my freshman year. Good ole Freshie year, was terrifying. Starting out with a new band director, Mr Florjancic that we have never seen before was scary. I think the first time all of us met him was at a car wash and the few minutes we thought he was just another upperclassmen band geek! Monday rolled around, we soon realized, oh he was our band director. Never less we soon warmed up to him being our director. We had started our first week of practice at the high school, which I didn't know what to do. I really didn't know anyone or anything I have been just a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
