PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The following Lean Six Sigma case study will reflect a real-life healthcare problem with
Continuous Improvement and Lean Six Sigma Tools to show how some of the tools are put into
place in the real world. The object of this project is your appropriate use of Lean Six Sigma
tools and the data provided. Project completion is required to pass the course. Project
assignments are assessed on a Complete/Incomplete basis. Each Phase of the DMAIC process in
the Project has an assignment. Assignments must be submitted to the instructor by the end of the
week corresponding to the DMAIC Phase. The exception is the week 8 or Control phase
assignment which needs to be submitted early in the last week of the course to allow grading.
The Instructor will determine if the student has submitted a Project assignment that is Complete.
If the assignment is Incomplete, there will be interaction between the Instructor and student until
the assignment is Complete. All project assignments must be assessed as Complete for the
student to pass the course. An Incomplete project will result in a Failing grade for the course.

Executive Summary
Dr. Deasley is a popular Doctor in Tampa, Florida specializing in primary care. He spends a great deal of
time with each of his patients, typically, 45 minutes to one (1) hour. As a result, there are many other
patients waiting in the waiting room who become impatient at the long wait time. The Doctor has hours
every day except Wednesdays. He has Hospital Clinic on Wednesdays and does not have office hours.
Dr. Deasley’s office hours are 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM (patients can be scheduled up until 5:30 PM) on
Tuesdays and Thursdays and 9:30 AM to 7:30 PM (patients can be scheduled up until 7:30 PM) on
Mondays and Fridays. He does Hospital Rounds from 6:00 AM to 8:00 AM. He conducts patient call
backs between patients, during his lunch hour and after office hours. We triage the calls so he gets back
to more seriously sick patients first. However, sometimes he doesn’t call back non-emergencies until the
next AM. Dr. Deasley is becomes overbooked because he likes to have 10 patients scheduled per day.
However, due to time constraints he frequently needs to rebook patients he is unable to see due to time
constraints.

every day except Wednesdays. He has Hospital Clinic on Wednesdays and does not have office hours.

This chapter focuses on assessing the feasibility of a business idea. Feasibility analysis is the process of determining if a business idea is viable. In Chapter 2, we introduced the First Screen, which is a tool for quickly assessing the merits of business ideas. A feasibility analysis is a more stringent test designed to take the best ideas that emerge from the First Screen and more fully assess their feasibility.
As mentioned in Chapter 1, the most effective business plans are part of a comprehensive process that includes (1) identifying a business idea, (2) screening the idea (or ideas) to determine their preliminary feasibility, (3) conducting a feasibility analysis to see if proceeding with a business plan is warranted, and (4) writing the plan. A visual reminder of the comprehensive nature of this process and where feasibility analysis fits in is provided in Figure 3-1. Recall the sequential nature of the steps shown in Figure 3-1 cleanly separate the investigative portion of thinking through the merits of a business idea from the planning and selling stage of the process. Steps 2 to 3, which focus on feasibility analysis, are investigative in nature and are designed to critically assess the merits of a business idea. Step 4, the business plan, focuses on planning and selling. A properly conducted feasibility analysis lays the foundation for a well-reasoned and well-researched business plan. The most compelling facts a company can include in a business plan are the results of its own feasibility analysis, particularly if the analysis includes feedback from industry experts and prospective customers.
This chapter presents a template for completing a feasibility analysis and describes each of the four steps in the feasibility analysis process.

Nurse leaders play a key role in the decision-making processes associated with the purchase of a health information technology and any subsequent technology upgrades and improvements. A thorough and accurate needs assessment establishes a foundation for evaluating the overall value to an organization of the various technologies that can be used to support nursing and improve patient care.
The needs assessment you will conduct in your first assessment enables you to take a systematic approach to developing knowledge about a new or upgraded telehealth technology that would impact nursing practice. The needs assessment also identifies assessment work that may already have been completed and any gaps that still exist and must be addressed. The goals of completing the needs assessment are to:
Identify gaps in practice that must be addressed to improve patient care.
Understand the nature and scope of needed changes and identify associated opportunities and challenges.
Enable a thoughtful and systematic approach to change implementation and management.
This assessment provides an opportunity for you to work through the needs assessment process and present your findings in a way that will help you gain the support of executive leaders.
By successfully completing this assessment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following course competencies and assessment criteria:
Competency 1: Evaluate technologies used to gather patient data; inform diagnoses; and enhance care quality, safety, and outcomes.
Explain the relevance and importance of a needs assessment.
Identify the safety requirements and regulatory considerations when using a new or upgraded telehealth technology.
Competency 2: Develop a collaborative technology integration strategy.
Describe the potential impact of internal and external stakeholders and end users on the acquisition of a new or upgraded telehealth technology.
Competency 3: Develop a strategy for managing technology use that enhances patient care and organizational effectiveness.
Identify the key issues in nursing care affecting patient outcomes that a new or upgraded telehealth technology will address.
Competency 4: Promote effective technology use policies that protect patient confidentiality and privacy.
Identify the patient confidentiality and privacy protections that a new or upgraded telehealth technology must address.
Competency 5: Communicate effectively with diverse audiences, in an appropriate form and style, consistent with applicable o.
Standards Driven Healthcare Information Integration Infrastructure
Healthcare information exchange, integration, and analytic capabilities are critical to safe, cost-effective, high-quality health care.
The technical infrastructure that serves as an enabler for these capabilities is a complex array of data exchange standards, clinical terminologies, and infrastructure technologies.
This presentation provides an overview of this technical infrastructure and relevant current and emerging technologies:
1. Data Exchange Standards: HL7, X12, IEEE, ASTM, NCPDP, and DICOM;

We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.
