Florence Nightingale was born in 1820 in Florence, Italy and was named after her hometown. She received nurse training in Germany and became involved in the Crimean War in the 1850s, where she greatly reduced mortality rates among soldiers. Nightingale spent her life as a writer and reformer of hospital conditions. She died in 1910 at age 90 and was buried in London.
