Ironically, because social tool adoption by practicing scientists has been slow, many people involved in delivering science education are visitors rather than residents in social spaces, and their expertise with these tools is outstripped by the students they teach. This session will start with a whistle-stop tour of the pedagogies of online education. Participants will then discuss the barriers to tool adoption, examples of best practice, and suggestions for institutional and individual advances.

"Authentic assessment" is relevant to real world outcomes and engaging for students. Much of the treadmill activity of conventional assessment (essays and exams) has little to do with what goes on in the workplace. Faced with the task of developing a "research skills" module for 300 biological sciences students, I attempted to apply the principles of authentic assessment. The practical problems in achieving this with a large number of students involve the staffing demands of this approach, and there are problems with applying performance-based outcomes to large groups of students. Team-based learning enhances student engagement and represents a shift from a teacher-based strategy to a student-centred approach.

Assessment and Feedback is a focus at our institution, with an emphasis on providing high quality feedback to our students in a timely manner. Students are often intrinsically motivated to seek feedback that will help them engage with their subject (Higgins, et. al., 2002) and while feedback has been available and is valued, Weaver (2006) has indicated that adding comments could be more helpful. To address these requests, we have focused on implementing Assessment and Feedback project with the introduction of Turnitin Feedback Studio across a number of courses at the College. The two main reasons for the shift to Turnitin are: 1.) To increase student engagement by giving them more in depth and relevant feedback on their assessments, and 2.) Simplify and streamline teacher’s marking and workload. By moving to Feedback Studio, we were able to continue to provide students access to rubrics and general comments, while significantly improving feedback by introducing overall verbal feedback and multiple different types of annotations. These annotations range from highlighting a common mistake to providing web links to resources that help students improve, for example, a website detailing the correct way to reference an assignment. With a mix of: Rubrics, comments, written summations, verbal feedback, strikethrough, inline text and quickmarks providing links to resources, we have found that the students are being provided with extremely rich feedback that is very easy to process due to a smart, simple layout. Moreover, students also have access to Feedback Studio’s originality and similarity reports. We encourage academic staff to allow students access to this feature for drafting and learning purposes. This empowers them to improve their referencing and paraphrasing skills without having to contact teaching staff. Teaching and marking staff are also experiencing the benefit of this system. Despite the increase in feedback to students, the marking process has become more streamlined, with easy to use rubrics, drag and drop annotations and one-click verbal feedback helping to facilitate more efficient marking. This session will detail the benefits outlined above and explain how the students and staff have embraced these changes.

Presentation delivered to graduate students at Emory University as part of a TATTO (Teaching Assistant Training and Teaching Opportunity) brown bag session. ABSTRACT Learning analytics is the measurement, collection, analysis and reporting of data about learners and their contexts, for purposes of understanding and optimizing learning and the environments in which it occurs. Data driven approaches to teaching and learning are rapidly being adopted within educational environments, but there is still much confusion about what learning analytics is, what it can do, and how it is best employed. This talk will provide a general overview of the field of learning analytics, its terminology and methods, as well as contemporary ethical debates. It will also introduce several open source and Emory-supported analytics tools available to students and instructors to facilitate the achievement of various learning outcomes.

California Community College Faculty Motivation and Reflection on Open Textbo...

Interviews were conducted with twelve faculty members at community colleges in California who adopted open textbooks in their teaching practice for one academic term or longer. The interviews queried faculty on motivation to undertake the adoption, pedagogical considerations, student savings and feedback, and support from other campus stakeholders. Faculty were asked how their teaching and student learning was affected as a result of adopting an open textbook in their course. Specifically they were asked if they were collaborating more with other faculty members and whether they were now using a wider range of instructional materials in their courses. With regards to student learning, they were asked if they believed that student learning had improved or whether student retention had improved as a result of the adoption of an open and free textbook. Any unanticipated outcomes that had resulted from the adoption either in their own practice or with students was also queried. In addition to the faculty and students, other stakeholders on campus are often involved in the decision and process to adopt an open textbook. College initiatives or pilot programs to increase access and equity were sometimes the instigators for making the change and other times it was strictly a faculty decision. Library, instructional design, and bookstore staff were other stakeholders who played roles in the adoption process. Attend this presentation to better understand the motivations of college faculty who adopt open textbooks and how it affected their teaching practice. Hear about the challenges they encountered and any unexpected outcomes. Learn what students had to say about using open textbooks in the classroom and how it affected their learning and ability to be successful.

Presentation at the Online Teaching Conference Jun 18, 2015 in San Diego, CA: The cost of textbooks has been identified as a major barrier for students completing their education. Colleges seeking to increase student retention and success are promoting the use of open educational resources and open textbooks to reduce costs and improve pedagogy. A key strategy for college adoption campaigns has been participating in communities of practice. Members of the Community College Consortium for OER (CCCOER) will share their best practices and other tactics for nurturing a national community of practice focused on open education. Etienne Wenger defines communities of practice as “groups of people who share a concern or a passion for something they do and learn how to do it better as they interact regularly.” With over 250 member colleges in 19 states and provinces, CCCOER encourages collaboration between members and invites OER project presentations at monthly online meetings. Experienced members advise those who are just getting started on OER and best practices are freely shared. Access to a community of college OER experts through our advisory listserve allows new members to quickly find and adopt the highest quality OER available. Meetups at regional and national conferences provide an opportunity to share and promote the OER adoption successes of our members with colleagues in higher education. Traditionally coursework is submitted, marked and returned to students with their grade and feedback. The difficulties with this approach is that a tutor has no way of assessing whether a student has reviewed their work, understood their feedback and took action to improve their work. There is no clear method for determining whether student’s perceived judgment of their submitted assessment is similar to that of the tutor; or for advising support to improve learning. This session will share the journey and evaluation findings of the CLARITI project which is endeavouring to address such difficulties. Presenters will begin by highlighting the opportunities and challenges of an initial paper-based feedback and progress review approach, which was used. It had obvious pedagogical benefits but was challenging administratively. They will then showcase a new technology facilitated approach which is enabling students to submit assessments as normal but providing new opportunities were they are given corrective feedback and model solutions and encouraged to be more reflective using the Ulster University’s Blackboard VLE, FAN system and a new bespoke application. The project has been evaluating the benefits of initially withholding student’s marks while students are asked to reflect and indicate what score they think they deserve and what actions they think they need to take to improve their learning. The student scores, reflections and action plans are collected electronically via a ‘Learner Score’ quiz in Blackboard. A newly designed bespoke application has been developed which presents the data collected from Blackboard in a simple interface, which allows the tutor to easily: review the learner score and comments provided by the students; engage with this student feedback and return a tutor score. It has also been designed to automatically generate an advisability for further support response, depending on the tutor’s scores and a mechanism for giving individualised feedback. Each student receives an email with a link to an individual progress and summary report. One student has commented “This feedback strategy highlights the silly mistakes I have made and motivates me to get it right next time. I don’t think just getting a score on a piece of paper would have the same effect.” The presenters will lead activities to encourage debate among participants about the approach, the application of such an approach for other subjects and will seek ideas about how the benefits of such learner analytics could be captured and integrated more seamlessly into Blackboard.

All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error. Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials. This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
