The Game
In just four seconds it was all over. Everything I knew about the game had vanished before me as I
knew something had just gone terribly wrong. It was only the seventh game of my sophomore season
when everything came to an end. In the early innings against Slidell, we clung to a minuscule lead of
just one run; I knew that I had to step my game up if we had any chance of winning. As the game
progressed through the night and the temperature dropped along with the sun, my body began to ache
as I continually pushed it beyond its physical limits. Shivering in the dugout while covered with dried
sweat and dirt, coach called my name since it was my turn to bat. As I stepped into the box, I peered
down towards third base, catching a glimpse ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Everyone was stronger, smarter, and faster; but that was not going to stop me from playing. In all
actuality, playing on the varsity team as a freshman made me better. The veteran players made me
push myself like never before and taught me to never give up. I strove for perfection only to achieve
excellence. Although I worked day in and day out, my talent just could not cut it as my other
teammates were much more seasoned players. I sat out most of my freshman year, but as sophomore
year rolled around, my efforts began to pay off as I had received the long awaited starting position.
Early into my sophomore season, everything was going swell. My abilities looked promising as my
game had drastically improved from all my hard work. This was going to be my year. One thousand
one, I hit a hard hot shot a little too hard to handle right at the third baseman and took off bursting
down the line towards first, applying more power with each stride. One thousand two, I am half way
there, I am going to be safe, but I have to go faster, I thought as I ran. One thousand three, a great roar
erupts, catching the attention of bystanders as I stepped on first base. One thousand four, I crashed to
the ground in pure agony, screaming and clenching my hip. I closed my eyes and flailed on my back in
immense pain, frantically waiting for help to arrive. Suddenly, I heard the familiar voices of athletic
trainers and doctors: Maverick, can you tell me

Comparing Hinduism And Islam
Many people tend to confuse Muslims from Hindus and vice versa. After visiting each place of
worship and examining each person individually, and listening to each person speak so highly about
their religion and culture, you can clearly distinguish between the two. They have many similarities
and differences, which establish a relationship between the two. Although in the past there has been
many disputes over the two, this is due to their dissimilarities. The most common dispute between the
two are because of the gods. Hinduism, think that gods are present in everything and anything while
Islam believes in the holiness of Allah alone. I find it interesting, when it comes to eating certain
things both religions don t consume a certain ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Islamic religions follows five pillars from the prophet. 1. Testament that there is one God and
Muhammad is his messenger; 2. prayer five times daily mainly before sunset and after; 3. fast during
Ramadan you can eat after sunset; 4. charity to the poor at least 2.5% of their overall wealth; 5.
Pilgrimage journey to the holy place in India, the Mosque.
The goal of Hinduism is to break the cycle of rebirth, in attempt to attain salvation. On the other hand,
the goal of the Islamic religion is to fulfill their responsibility of life by following the Quran and
Hadith, and to live life with compassion towards all of Gods creations. When it comes to the place of
worship, both religions differ in regards to statues and pictures. Shiva Vishnu contained many statues
of their gods and it is a common practice to have these images. Although, ISOM does not contain any
drawings, paintings, or statues regarding their gods. God cannot be seen, but sees all. They only have
calligraphy and the temple is angled in such a way that it faces Mecca.
Islam comes from the Arabic root word of Salema which translates to peace, submission, and
obedience. Islam is submission to the will of God and obedience to His rules. The Muslims follow the
Qur an, and traditions of the Holy Last messenger Muhammad, called Sunnah which is found in
prayers or hadiths by the men around him. Hindus follow the Vedas and Gita, Smrti and Sruti are oral

Morton as trying to state he was objective, and was being honest. The two major different pieces that
support the thesis that Morton tried to be objective is his use of lead shot instead of mustrard seed and
his openness with all his data. When Morton realized that his Mustard seed technique was unstable
and presented varied results he quickly changed to a lead shot which was more accurate. Morton was
very open when it came to displaying his data. He published results which included numbers, not just
explainations.
Select any two of the general categories of fudging and finagling that Gould has identified in Morton s
work except that of miscalculations and convenient omissions. For each of the two selected categories,
briefly explain the category in your own words. Carefully sketch Gould s major specific example of
the category. Explain explicitly how the example fits the category into which Gould has put it, state
which of Morton s publication(s) the example comes from, state the racial groups and/or subgroups
featured in the example, and (following Gould) explain the effects of the finagling on Morton s
conclusions about racial ranking.

Systems Administration and Network Administration
Systems Administration and Network Administration Systems administration and network
administration are, in many respects, very similar jobs. Both positions are highly involved in
maintaining the computer systems in an organization, and, in some smaller firms, the position may be
handled by the same individual. However, while there are significant similarities between systems
administration and network administration, there are differences in the roles as well. Basically
speaking, system administration focuses on computer systems and networks, while network
administration looks at maintenance and upkeep of the hardware and software that composes the
network (Entrance Exams 2012, 2012). Because there is obviously an overlap between the two
different job descriptions, it can be difficult to understand why it is so important for information
technology professionals to differentiate between network and systems administration. However,
when one understands the different roles of the two different positions, it becomes clear that, why they
might overlap, and why a single individual might be able to handle the position in a small
organization, there are actually substantial differences between the two positions. Particularly in a
large organization, the two jobs may need to be handled by different professionals with different skill
sets. It is because of these different skill sets that the industry has been so adamant about
differentiating between systems and network

Atwood Learning Center Narrative

night hike. I was with Deer Group because, well, I was a deer. I wasn t paying attention too well to
what we were going to do because I was tired and didn t know we were just hiking and weren t going
to a destination. Although, we sort of did. We stopped somewhere and our group leader grabbed an
object out of his backpack and went behind everyone saying What does the object feel like? Or, What
does it smell like? Of course since it was a night hike, it was dark and I couldn t quite see well. The

Meaning, it was covered in sweat. I also had a long sleeve and jacket on which didn t help but I just
carried my jacket. When I took my jacket off, my arms felt free, but were damp with sweat. I know, it
sounds like I m complaining, I am, but it s true. Although, everything else at Atwood was pretty

and I sweated for about three quarters of the hike. I thanked everything later, though because the night

The Relationship Between Anaerobic Exercise And Aerobic...
The relationship between anaerobic exercise and aerobic capacity Introduction
Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is an important organic molecule in all living organisms, it is a
biologist fuel for all living organisms.(Vanputte et al. 2014) When the energy stored in ATP is used,
ATP will be broken down to adenosine triphosphate and inorganic phosphorous (Astrand 1956). Cell
Respiration is the way that the human body produces more ATP, and there are four parts in total which
is glycolysis, Link Reaction, Krebs cycle and Electron Transport Chain respectively. However, if when
oxygen is not present in the cell, then the private undergoes alcoholic fermentation and lactate
formatted in the process of anaerobic respiration (Peeters Weem et al. 2007).
While physical activities of moderate intensity (e.g. Marathon and swimming) are supported by
aerobic metabolism, a high intensity activity (e.g. 100m race) is an anaerobic metabolism process
because the human body muscle needs a large amount of energy in a short period of time, and the
lungs cannot put enough oxygen in the blood steam to keep up the need of muscle energy. It generally
is used only for short bursts of the body. (BrianMac Sports Coach 2011)
There is a positive proportion between demands on the aerobic energy system during physical activity
and demands for oxygen delivered to the muscles. Generally, increase the demands on aerobic energy
also increase the demands for oxygen delivered to the muscle (Medbo and Tabata 1993).

The Character Of Simon As An Allegory Of Jesus Christ
The character of Simon, from the novel Lord of the Flies , is often viewed as an allegory of Jesus
Christ, which is highly important, as Simon plays a significant role through the novel. Simon and
Christ do not only share natural, unconditional kindness, there are many parallels to be drawn with
Simon s and Jesus lives. Many would argue that the following arguments discussed are more than just
a coincidence, and that Golding intended and/or based Simon on Christ.
Firstly, a main reason why it can be interpreted that Simon is an allegory of Christ, is their role that
they both had society which can be described as controversial and tendentious; essentially, they are
both viewed as outcasts. This can be shown when he said: Maybe, he said hesitantly, maybe there is a
beast [...] What I mean is . . . maybe it s only us [...] We could sort of . . . . This tells us that the
concept of the beast being an illusion of fear, is a very taboo and a neglected concept on the island.
Moreover, the repetition of the word maybe and the use of could , indicates that Simon is very
precarious with his wording and does not want to Ralph to think of him as batty , as referenced
numerous times through the novel. Therefore, it could be argued that maybe and could connotes open
mindedness, and willingness to express ideas peacefully, not by force, because those words sound very
open and free to interpretation. This contrasts with considerable extent that Jack and the other boys

Getting Enough Calcium through Food Essay example
The body s metabolism relies on minerals such as calcium to function properly. Calcium is not
produced in the body directly. Any food eaten is the sole source calcium, which makes up nearly 1.5%
of a person s total body weight. However, despite traditional understanding, calcium is not just found
in dairy related products. A variety of foods also provide calcium to the benefit of the body. Both
sources of calcium are detailed below.
Without a doubt, the best food sources of calcium include dairy products. Specifically, well purchased
and well known items such as milk, cheese, and yogurt provide nearly 100 to 400 mg of calcium per
cup of serving. Another popular choice is cottage cheese. One half cup of low fat cottage cheese ...

Very few realize, though, that one does not have to only eat daily products to acquire the
recommended amounts of calcium. For instance,
Cooking and Storage: 2 4 paragraphs
The relationship between vitamin d and calcium is inextricably linked. Recent research has discovered
when calcium intake is too low, vitamin D [triggers] a process in which stored calcium is mobilized
from the bones (Holick) to help with bone healing and reformation. Vitamin D acts in the body to
replenish low amounts of calcium. The skeletal system and the digestive tract can be tapped when the
blood calcium begins to fall...[and]...increase absorption of calcium from food [and] lost in urine
(Sizer 243). In sum, regular amounts of calcium are essential to good health in the body.
Unlike other minerals, calcium is considered to be a very stable mineral. Processes such as
pasteurization, heating, or drying...does not reduce availability of calcium (Ensminger and Ensminger
301). The mineral remains intact, regardless whether it is in ice cream, a boiled pudding, or a frozen
dairy item. For milk to retain its high calcium makeup, it is best stirred as it heats to incorporate the
calcium salts into the liquid (Ibid.).
Cooking other calcium rich food sources also must follow proper guidelines. For instance, vegetables
should be cooked by using small amounts of water, by keeping the sizes of the pieces as large as

The Music Of Electronic Dance Music
Tracing as far back as the 1940s when sound pioneers began their own movement known as musique
concrete, sampling, evolved from simple sound collage. Now it has evolved to the act of taking a
portion of one sound recording and reusing it as an instrument or sound recording in a different song
or piece. Today it has become an integral part of many music genres today. Samples often consist of
one part of another song, such as a lyric or rhythm break, and used to create a beat for another song.
The experimental musicians did not get permission from the artists whose work they were using or
from the copyright owner while they were using them to create their own music. It began getting
popular in hip hop when it was just played in local dance parties so they were not obligated to receive
copyright clearance in order to play this music at events. As the 1970s approached, DJs were
experimenting with vinyl by having two turntables and an audio mixer going at the same time and
manipulating them. Leading on into 1980s, electronic dance music was in the making and picking up
on sampling after being influenced by hip hop. It went on to spread to indie rock, contemporary R B,
and industrial music.
The digital sampler was invented after that to enable musicians to record any sound at the touch of a
button, making sampling simpler. Typical sample instruments consist of grand pianos, pipe organs,
violins, cellos, wind and percussion instruments. This can include voices and non traditional

Direct seeding is a method in which the seeds are shown directly into the soil by using special
machines . The seeds are covered with soil as they are being sown . This method does not involve the

Elie Wiesel Inhumanity In Night
In the memoir Night, the narrator Elie Wiesel recounts a moment when they were transported to
another concentration camp and forced to run, the ss officers were running as well they had orders to

Religious Tolerance In Chaim Potock s The Chosen
Religious Tolerance in The Chosen Religious tolerance, one of the major topics of the world today,
rarely shows itself honestly. Yet, what is religious tolerance and what qualities does it display?
Honestly, Religious tolerance means holding true to one s own beliefs, while tolerating others beliefs.
Perfectly demonstrated religious tolerance does not mean agreeing with someone s views, but instead
tolerating them, if it causes no hurt toward others. Acting intolerantly of another ideas does not
include speaking about one s own ideas, but instead of hating and persecuting others because of their
ideas. Beautifully is religious tolerance demonstrated by the characters of Chaim Potock s classic, The
Chosen. The Characters who demonstrate religious tolerance include David Malter, Reb Saunders, and
Reuven Malter. Firstly, David Malter, the father of Reuven Malter, beautifully demonstrates religious
tolerance. David is a rabbi, a teacher, a zealous Zionist. Zionism is the belief that the Jews should
rebuild Jerusalem to create a Jewish state. However, many Jews such as Reb Saunders hate Zionism

The Science Of Social Psychology
If you put good apples into a bad situation, you ll get bad apples , said Philip G. Zimbardo, a
prominent researcher of the field of social psychology. What is social psychology, you might ask? In
short, it represents and defines an individual s actions when the said individual is placed in a social
situation. It also defines how you choose to act, often subconsciously, in the face of others. The
science of social psychology is a youthful one, it s existence barely a century old. However, it is with
it s existence that we are able to decipher topics such as conformity, independence, and identity on a

conformity overtaking the free will of the group through the want of the individual to fit in, known as

The Man Who Killed-Personal Narrative
It was a cold night on May 16th. The air was crisp as winter leaves. I can remember the gunfire as if
the bullet was just shot. The man that shot the bullet was filled with greed and power and was just a
little over 6 feet tall; that was the man that killed my parents on that cold night. My sister and I were
hiding in the closet and the only thing was the darkness that filled the room and the only sound was
gunfire. We quietly jumped out the window and ran to the police station. when we got there it was 12
p.m.. The cop that we told the story to thought that we were just making up the entire story. So we left

Descriptive Essay About Times Square
When you mention New York to anyone, they automatically think about Times Square. This beautiful
place with skyscrapers, Central Park, and a unique transportation system. However, if you were to ask
me what I think about New York; I believe the skyscrapers block the sun, Central park is just a regular
park for dogs, and the subway trains rarely run consistently especially in the mornings. I have lived in
New York for 18 years, and I have yet to understand what everyone likes about the Big Red Apple.
Growing up as a resident of New York, one is taught that there s an opportunity in every corner, but
that s not exactly what I see. I have gone to all the tourist sights, and have yet to find it as fascinating
as other states such as: California, Florida, Virginia, Boston or even Washington D.C.. Times Square
was beautiful in the beginning, but then you get harassed by every person with a costume on, or even
if you take a picture with Elmo they charge you five dollars. Everything is also overpriced, no one
should be paying a hundred dollars to ride on a horse, or paying three dollars per minute on a bicycle
ride. Many neighborhoods have changed, if you go down to Brooklyn it is now hipster, and isn t the
way it was before which was considered the ghetto. Everyone is paying for an experience that can be
found in any state and at any time. Also, the traffic that goes on in the trains and on the streets is
insane. Whether you take the Long Island expressway, the Clearview expressway or any other
expressway you are going to find traffic.
New york is probably known as one of the most rat infested city. There are many programs that try to
end the rat dilemma, but the rat population is so large that it s hard to control. Not only are rats found
on the train, they are also found in neighborhoods such as the Bronx. Many people complain about the
rat situation to the city, but the homeowners take no action when it s time to clean up their own mess
(Bragdon et al., 2007 2009). Many of the rats that are seen all over the city are huge, and go crawling
around for any food that they can find, mainly in trash cans. Whitestone, Queens is the neighborhood
that I grew up in. Whitestone is a small community, predominantly

Pynchon also takes the old adage Write what you know and posits an addition to the advice: So as a
corollary to writing about what we know, maybe we should add getting familiar with our ignorance
and the possibilities therein for ruining a good story. In his discussion of this work, Pynchon takes
much care in attempting to explain the significance of the notion of entropy as he chose to portray it in
his story as well as his general take on the concept. [For more information on the concept of entropy,

s head around: he writes, Since I wrote this story I have kept trying to understand entropy, but my
grasp becomes less sure the more I read. He beckons us to research the subject and come up with an
understanding of it on our own, for, like Callisto, Pynchon seems to feel quite strongly that entropy is
a concept metaphorically applicable to many aspects of life. Pynchon credits his major influences in
the formulation of Entropy as Henry Adams and Norbert Wiener, author of Cybernetics and the

The Reggio Emili A Model Of Early Childhood Development...
The Reggio Emilia approach is one that is a model, inspiring early childhood development education. .
As children are natural explorers, they enjoy their environment and would love it to be a part of their
own creation and knowledge. A typical day in a center that is based off of the Reggio Emilia approach
is centered on the interests of the child and the guidance from the teachers. There are various
opportunities that are provided to the children from a Reggio Emilia Approach.
This approach was a model of early childhood education that was based on the foundation that would
facilitate a child s learning through different ways. The ways, such as expressive, communicative, and
cognitive, were intended to progress early childhood development. This approach was founded by a
man who was an early education specialist from Reggio Emilia, a town in North Italy. The man s
name was Loris Malaguzzi. His vision attracted the world through his project and play based
curriculum. It was also based on the play of children and the guide of educators. The overall approach
is combined from principles that were based off of child centered curriculums. These types of
curriculums included parents, educators, the communities, and the children. This formulated what was
known as the environment. The environment is known to be the third teacher because it is set up by
the educators in order to observe and further the learning of the child. An important factor of this
approach is documenting. This

Ancient Egyptian Civilization
The ancient Egyptian civilization is arguably the oldest civilization in the world. It is believed to have
emerged around 5,500 years ago, although some scholars have estimated an even earlier date. During
the predynastic period the Egyptians were not united, but as the Sahara desert expanded many people
began moving their settlements around the Nile River. These settlements started coming together to
form towns. As these towns progressed they developed many new ideas to help the society run
smoother. However the total unification and start of the ancient Egyptian civilization did not happen,
until Hierakonpolis expanded and conquered Naqada. The ancient Egyptian civilization was now
created. Since this civilization was one of the first in the world, there was no structure to start with. In
order to function as a thriving civilization, the Egyptians had to accomplish agricultural, architectural,
medical, and educational advancements. The ancient Egyptian s advancements in agriculture is one of
the driving forces that lead to the success of their empire. The Egyptian civilization came together
because of the need for fertile soil and a constant supply of water. Although the Nile was a constant
supply of water, the Egyptians still needed to find a way to bring the water to their crops. Murray
shows the reason why irrigation was needed, In Egypt, 6000 years ago, when the latest rainy interlude
began to wane, neolithic tribesmen from both sides flocked into the Nile Valley

The Relation Between Cognition And Language
The relation between cognition and language has been a curious topic for many decades now.
Cognition plays a dynamic role within linguistic expression
Most of current discussion in layman s crowd is on a speaker s ability to impart influence on an
audience. We study the power of language in propaganda. We look at the sway that specific words
have on an individual s emotions.
Linguistic scholars have looked into the opposite the influence of words on the speaker.
Around the world there are almost 8000 languages spoken. Unsurprisingly, with this range come
significant differences in what is spoken and understood in each language, from information conveyed
by each word to what kind of informative words are even included in the language.
So how does one s language influence one s thoughts? This question has been disputed since the Sapir
Whorf hypothesis, also known as linguistic relativity hypothesis, implicated that a language s features
determines its speaker s thoughts. (danza) the idea dated centuries back, but this was the first
substantial hypothesis, formed during 1930 s based on the thoughts of two linguists Edward Sapir and
Benjamin Lee Whorf.
Language seems to invade daily mental processes more so than previously expected. Because
language pervades everything we do in labeling colors, counting numbers, adjectives, and verbs,
simple tasks become hard to accomplish without using the language faculty. Examples would be far
and few in between where thinking does not

The Rise Of Consumerism During World War II
In today s times, Americans are never too far from a drive through fast food restaurant or a shopping
mall. Products such as televisions, microwaves, and cars are necessities in homes in 2014. America
was not always the consumerist nation it is now. With thousands of American servicemen returning
home after World War II, the United States was filled with an energy that had long been repressed by
an economic depression in the 1930 s. By the 1950 s, Americans were ready to move on from the war
and start families. Thousands of jobs were created to accommodate all those retuning home, which
caused the United States economy to flourish. Since more people were working and receiving higher
wages, they were eager to start spending. Because of this, consumerism skyrocketed in the 1950 s.
Along with positive post war attitudes, suburbanization and the development of new products can also
be attributed to the rise of consumerism during this period.
As many American men fought in World War II, the United States economy had slowly started to pick
itself up after a devastating crash in 1929 that lasted over a decade. Most men were drafted into the
war, which left many jobs open back in the States. To fill these jobs women and African Americans
were recruited to fill them, thus making unemployment nearly nonexistent during this period. After
World War II had ended, Americans came home with a determination to keep the recovery going. A
key way to achieve this was to spend money.

On April 27, 1584, Raleigh dispatched a journey led by Phillip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe to search
for the Eastern coast of North America. They arrived on Roanoke Island on July 4, and almost
immediately recognized relations with the local citizens, the Sectoans and Croatans. Barlowe returned
to England with two Croatans named Manteo and Wanchese, who were able to explain the
government and natural features of the region to Raleigh. Based on this knowledge, Raleigh prepared
a second journey, to be led by Sir Richard Grenville.
Greenville s convoy departed Plymouth on April 9, 1585, with five major ships: the Tiger (Grenville
s), the Roebuck, the Red Lion, the Elizabeth, and the Dorothy. Consequently, a harsh rainstorm off the
shore of Portugal divided the Tiger from the rest of the convoy. The captains had an unforeseen event

the Baye of Muskito (Guayanilla Bay) on May 11.
While anticipating for the additional ships, Grenville recognized relations with the Spanish there while
concurrently engaging in some privateering in opposition to them, and also built a fort. The Elizabeth
arrived almost immediately after the fort s creation. Eventually, Grenville worn out off anticipating or
the remaining ships, and departed on June 7. The fort was discarded, and its site remains unknown.

Beethoven s 9th Symphony Analysis
This production of Beethoven s 9th Symphony was presented by the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra in
conjunction with The Lubbock Chorale and The Texas Tech University Choir. The performance was
held in the Lubbock Civic Center Theatre on October 13th and 14th at 7:30p.m. As a performer in the
University Choir, I was required to attend and perform both nights which allowed me the opportunity
to observe two different audiences. The audience on the night of the 13th was obviously better
prepared to handle such a long and mercurial major work. This was evident in the audience s reactions
to the ends of movements. The long standing and unwritten rule of waiting until the end of a major
work to clap was followed silently and diligently. This audience was mostly made up of adults
obviously over the age of fifty that are regular attendees and patrons of the Lubbock Symphony
Orchestra. Following thereafter in group size were the students, specifically Texas Tech and
surrounding area high school students. At this performance the amount of attending children was few
to none, as I could not see or hear any. The second audience mimicked the preceding audience in size
and age, however, this audience s reaction of clapping at the end of movements was highly undesired
by the performers, Maestro Cho, and the remaining members of the audience that understand the
unwritten rules of attending these types of concerts.
These types of reactions by inexperienced audiences make listening to or concentrating on great
performances of beautiful music very difficult. Not only do these translate to distractions for the
performers, but applause betwixt the movements can interrupt the flow of the work and thwart the
intended effect that the composer and conductor wish to have on the audience. This audience reaction
can also take away and distract from the atmosphere of the performance, which, in this case was a
relatively small and intimate concert hall.
Because this concert was only a performance of Beethoven s 9th Symphony, I will react to movements
two and four, the Scherzo and Recitative respectively. The Scherzo (second) movement was
characterized by Beethoven s ability to keep the constant presto eighth note motive throughout the

The Disadvantages Of Home Schooling
The advantages and disadvantages of home schooling This article covers the positive and negative
effects of Home schooling. Although I agree with some the strategies involved in home schooling no
curricula is perfect. I intend to portray the comparison of home schooling to public schooling to
inform the reader of its advantages. Along with that I hope to divulge some useful tools in educating
our youth. Its widely known that public education could use some improvements. There are some
factors of home schooling that can be combined with our current public school curriculum With that
being said there many disadvantages that bring forth dangers in both system that should be taken into
account. In order to make an informed decision we must examine both systems flaws. Then work on
eliminating them and use their attributes to rebuild education in general. There is a reason why both
homeschooling and public schools exist and its feasible that we analyze the motives behind both

discouraged parents from enrolling there kids in public schools. He warned families that school were
centered around factory like learning that rendered students compliant. He wanted to rid children of

The Approaches And Practices Of Language Teaching Essay
The Approaches and Practices in Language Teaching
Communicative Practices in Language Teaching
What is communicative language teaching (CLT)? Brown (2014, p. 236) offered the following four
interrelated characteristics as the definitions of CLT:
1. CLT helps students develop the four competences instead of merely focusing on their linguistic
competence or grammatical competence
2. CLT enables learners to use the language for meaningful purposes in authentic situations. Learning
language forms are not the aim of the approach, but to enable them to engage in authentic interactions
3. Fluency and accuracy activities complement each other as is seen in the underlying communicative
techniques.
4. Students are expected to use the language naturally and in unrehearsed contexts
It s important to engage students in doing some communicative practices. Richard (2006) explained
that communicative practices are those activities that focus on exchanging real information and using
language in an authentic context, thus the communication is based on the specific situation and not
predictable. Communicative language teaching has been proven to be effective in improving students
communicative abilities and other language skills. Richards and Rodgers (2001) also wrote that an
important goal of communicative language teaching is to help students improve their communicative
competence and other language skills. This indicates that the communicative activities can help
language learners

On November 18, 1978 what has been called the largest mass suicide in modern history occurred in
Jonestown, Guyana where 909 members of The Peoples Temple died. Jim Jones was the leader of the
Peoples Temple Church and religious movement. The church was looked highly upon by many back
in the 1950 1970 s. All races and backgrounds were brought together as one in his congregation.
Religion serves as a sanctuary from the harshness of everyday life and oppression by the powerful.
Most of Jones s followers lived lives that they were dissatisfied with and they felt as if the movement
gave them a purpose. Many of his followers believed that Jim brought more opportunities into their
lives and allowed them to change for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Jim would provide clothing, medical care, food, and anything else that his followers needed. They
deprived themselves of sleep to work and support Jim Jones and the movement. Jim Jones believed,
sell all things and have things in common. Religion, especially Jones s, binds members and allows
them to have common values and beliefs. His followers sold everything they had and gave all of their
money to the church, including their pay checks. His followers trusted in him, so they did and acted
however he said. Jim began to take complete control over every aspect of these people s lives. His
followers were idolizing him and putting him before family, work, and everything else in their lives.
As time passed, Jim Jones and the movement began to change. Some say that Jones began to lose
control. He began drinking and using drugs and started to go crazy. Jim Jones became extremely
paranoid and thought the whole world was against him and his movement. Jones was so paranoid that
he even started to fear for his own life. He compared himself and his movement to Malcom X and
Martin Luther King Jr., which were both assassinated, so he was afraid the same would happen to him.
Jones was desperate to get his followers away from the negative influences of the public. As the
officials, public, and family members started to ask questions and wonder about things, Jones felt as if
he was starting to lose all the control that he had gained and he did not want to risk

Eating A Marshmallow Experiment
Eat a marshmallow now or eat 2 in 15 minutes? That s what 600 four year olds were asked in 1972 at
Stanford University by a man that goes by the name of Walter Mischel. Needless to say, most kids
decided to wait. There was another option though, If they were not able to be patient they were left
with a bell to ring in case they wanted to eat the marshmallow right then and there. The main focus on
this experiment was to see how willpower was being used in their early life stage. One main detail that
was pointed out how the children dealt with the stressful situation. Most of the kids just occupied
themselves by covering their eyes, Moving into a corner to avoid contact with what s behind them, or
they just simply put their head down. Although

Plauchut s Cavite Mutiny
Plauchut s account also seems to be a result of carefully chosen information from sources other than
himself, and crafted to form a decent, if not slightly deficient, story about the events that culminated to
the Cavite Mutiny. These sources were mentioned in the essay and it seems safe to say that indeed, he
gathered information from such sources and used them to make his account. Although, Plauchut also
presented some information that, to some extent, he personally knew of, I still believe that his account
does not belong in the first category of First hand accounts as it was only through the information
from his sources that he was able to make an account. The third account is of Antonio Regidor, an
active member of the reformist movement

Myron Discus Blower Analysis
Discus Thrower (Discobolos) by Myron is a modern plaster replica of a Roman copy. The replica
stands approximately five and a half to six feet tall, portraying a standing male nude. This rendition
possesses a masculine, idealized athletic physique. Discobolos has a broad chest, wide shoulders,
toned torso, sturdy legs, and a patterned hair style with a proportional sized head containing an
expressionless face. With an expressionless face and blank eyes it provides further evidence of the
artist depicting an idea rather than a specific individual. Overall, the artist did a stunning job at
capturing the subtle details of the human body starting from the tensed muscles in the neck, shoulders,
torso, back, and legs to clasped toes on the base

Essay about Comparison of Michelangelo8217s and...
Comparison of Michelangelo8217s and Bernini8217s Davids The greatest artist has no conception
which a single block of marble does not potentially contain within its mass, but only a hand obedient
to the mind can penetrate to this image. Michelangelo describes in the above quote what it is like to
carve a likeness of a person out of a large block of marble. As we know from seeing his work, he did
an excellent job with this task. Bernini did just as fine a job on his, but in a much different way as you
will see in the following pages.
Michelangelo
Michelangelo was born on March 6, 1475, in Caprese, Italy, a tiny village, owned by the nearby city
state of Florence. His father was the mayor. He attended school in Florence, ... Show more content on

Frederick Hartt does an excellent job of describing the essence of the statue:
Throughout the statue, but especially in the head, the conflict between line and form... ...is intensified
and deepened. The features are more deeply undercut than in any of the earlier works, possibly
because of the height from which the statue was originally intended to be seen. ...The enormous eyes
...seem at once liquid and fiery. The flat planes joining at determined angles underlie all the
construction of the David, not only in the squared off masses of the features but throughout the knotty,
bony, sinewy, half developed, and unprecedentedly beautiful torso and legs. For the first time
Michelangelo is able to embody in the quality of a single human body all the passionate drama of a
man s inner nature. The sinews of the neck seem to tense and relax, the veins of the neck, hands and
wrists to fill, the nostrils to pinch, the belly muscles to contract and the chest to lift with the intake of
breath, the nipples to shrink and erect, the whole proud being to quiver like a war horse that smells the
battle. But the nature of the battle there is no indication whatever; it is eternal and in every man (Hartt
112).
Once the statue was completed, a committee of citizens and artists convened to decide where the

Voltaire s Candide As An Opportunity For Growth Or...
As humans, we have choices: To change, to stay the same, to work, to rest; each choice provides an
opportunity for growth or stagnation. Voltaire s Candide is a satire, originally published in 1759. The
enlightenment ideals which originated in the 17th century and continued into the 18th century are
highly prevalent in Candide. The work includes vehement criticism of nobility, philosophy, religion,
and basic human cruelty. The main criticism of Voltaire s work is directed toward philosophical
optimism, a widely accepted idea at the time. Philosophical optimism is the conviction that We live in
the best of all possible worlds. Voltaire s writing is in line with the philosophy stated in John Locke s
Second Treatise of Civil Government on labor which is that every man has a property in his own
person: this nobody has any right to but himself. The labour of his body, and the work of his hands, we
may say, are properly his. Whatsoever then he removes out of the state that nature hath provided, and
left it in, he hath mixed his labour with, and joined to it something that is his own, and thereby makes
it his property, as Candide encourages free will and labor in order to achieve a desired end. Voltaire s
Candide employs the motifs of resurrection, hypocrisy, and crime in order to amplify the negative
aspects of human nature, and in doing so, rejects the idea that we live in the best of all possible worlds
and encourages the exercise of free will as well as making the choice

Guy de Maupassant Writes in Third Person
In third person, the narrator is like another character that can see everyone in the story s point of view.
This way, the author can tell you what all of the characters are thinking. A writer s choice of a type of
narrator is crucial for the way a story is perceived by the reader. Guy de Maupassant uses a third
person limited perspective and the narrator reveals the thoughts and feelings of one character. Explicit
narration directly reveals the main character s internal and external conflict. Guy de Maupassant s
limited third person narrator creates a vivid character, struggling to acknowledge her lower class and
teaches a powerful theme about the dangers of envy . The symbolism throughout the story strengthens
Mathilde s internal conflict about being in a lower class. Guy de Maupassant uses a third person
limited narrator to characterize the depressed, ungrateful character, Mathilde, who is consumed with
envy. Mathilde is described as pessimistic and jealous of wealthy, elegant women. Beautiful Mathilde
Loisel was born into a family of clerks, and her utter conviction that her place in life is a mistake of
destiny leads her to live her life in a constant rebellion against her circumstances. Her desire for
wealth is a constant pain and distress. She cannot visit her wealthy friend Madame Forestier without
being overcome with jealousy, and the idea of going to a party without expensive clothes drives her to
tears. Mathilde is a jealous woman who will do anything in her

Tata Motors began manufacturing commercial vehicles in 1954 with a 15 year collaboration
agreement with Daimler Benz of Germany.
This partnership has led Tata Motors to not only become India‟s largest automobile company but also
India‟s largest commercial vehicle manufacturer; the world‟s top five manufactures of medium and
heavy trucks and the world‟s second largest medium and heavy bus manufacturer. Having just entered
the passenger vehicles market segment in 1991, Tata
Motors now ranks second in India‟s passenger vehicle market.
Tata has enjoyed the prestige of having developed Tata Ace, India‟s first indigenous light commercial
vehicle; Tata Safari, India‟s first sports utility vehicle; Tata Indica, India‟s first indigenously
manufactured passenger car; and the Nano, the world‟s least expensive car.
SWOT analysis of TATA motors:
SWOT analysis (alternately SLOT analysis) is a strategic planning method used to evaluate the
Strengths, Weaknesses/Limitations, Opportunities, and Threats involved in a project or in a business
venture. It involves specifying the objective of the business venture or project and identifying the
internal and external factors that are favourable and unfavourable to achieve that objective.

Community Oriented Policing
Community Oriented Policing
In spite of the fact that the United States still exceeds many other industrialized nations in overall
crime and violent crime, it has been effective in decreasing its crime rate, particularly during the
1990s. While some coalitions have attributed this positive development to changes in socio
demographic trends and rigid enforcement approaches, one coalition highlights the success of the
community oriented policing and problem oriented policing in eradicating the root causes of crime
(Stephens, 2003). While I don t believe that community oriented policing in the sole cause of
decreased crime rates I do believe that it has its positive and negative sides.
Community oriented policing is based on the complete ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The problem with this model is that it is difficult for police departments to dedicate officer to public
relations while there are serious crimes that need to be prevented. The idea of the public reporting
crimes to the police in a community meeting is acceptable but in many cases especially with the
current economic crisis that we are facing, it is impossible for police departments to have officers
strictly assigned to community police. As discussed earlier without full cooperation from both sides
the practice of community police is ineffective.
The community policing plan created by the City of Aberdeen in Maryland provides a good example
of how the partnership between the police and members of the community can be effective for dealing
with crimes. In order to promote the police and community s adoption of these new roles, the Mid
Atlantic Regional Community Policing Institute (MARCPI), along with the Johns Hopkins University,
will offer training to the police and the community. Both the police and the community have to learn
how to change their thinking processes in order to deal with the problems in a proactive way, instead
of the conventional reactive fashion. Through the training sessions, the members of the community,
the police officers and city department heads will acquire the skills and knowledge for addressing
problems. The involvement of the city department heads and other

Rhetorical Analysis Of Disney s Frozen
Rhetorical Analysis: Disney s Frozen
Walt Disney Productions prestige is to never disappoint and their latest movie Frozen, is no exception.
The movie centers around the lives of two sisters, kind hearted Anna and the frightened Snow Queen
Elsa. Fearless Anna sets off on a journey to find her sister, who flees to an icy mountain after she
accidentally traps the kingdom of Arendelle in an eternal winter with her ice powers. Disney s 2013
animated film reeled in its target audience and more; the film intended to appeal to children s of all
ages surprisingly enough enticed a wider audience largely comprised of non families. Disney s
reputation for promoting happiness and the well being of American families led to the direct success
of the movie Frozen. The film met its purpose, depicting a touching storyline showing the importance
of family and undermining the traditional concept of true love. Furthermore, Walt Disney Productions
established sufficient credibility within its viewers and audience with the use of artistic proofs such as;
ethos, logos, and pathos. Disney s tradition is to provide the audience with an educational piece of
entertainment, Frozen is undeniably one of those Disney animated films worth seeing. Walt Disney
Productions strategic use of rhetoric made it evident that the movie was going to be an all time hit
some may even say the biggest children s film of all time simply because it was just that, a Disney
movie.
Frozen became the heart melting,

  • 2. The Game In just four seconds it was all over. Everything I knew about the game had vanished before me as I knew something had just gone terribly wrong. It was only the seventh game of my sophomore season when everything came to an end. In the early innings against Slidell, we clung to a minuscule lead of just one run; I knew that I had to step my game up if we had any chance of winning. As the game progressed through the night and the temperature dropped along with the sun, my body began to ache as I continually pushed it beyond its physical limits. Shivering in the dugout while covered with dried sweat and dirt, coach called my name since it was my turn to bat. As I stepped into the box, I peered down towards third base, catching a glimpse ... In all actuality, playing on the varsity team as a freshman made me better. The veteran players made me push myself like never before and taught me to never give up. I strove for perfection only to achieve excellence. Although I worked day in and day out, my talent just could not cut it as my other teammates were much more seasoned players. I sat out most of my freshman year, but as sophomore year rolled around, my efforts began to pay off as I had received the long awaited starting position. Early into my sophomore season, everything was going swell. My abilities looked promising as my game had drastically improved from all my hard work. This was going to be my year. One thousand one, I hit a hard hot shot a little too hard to handle right at the third baseman and took off bursting down the line towards first, applying more power with each stride. One thousand two, I am half way there, I am going to be safe, but I have to go faster, I thought as I ran. One thousand three, a great roar erupts, catching the attention of bystanders as I stepped on first base. One thousand four, I crashed to the ground in pure agony, screaming and clenching my hip. I closed my eyes and flailed on my back in immense pain, frantically waiting for help to arrive. Suddenly, I heard the familiar voices of athletic trainers and doctors: Maverick, can you tell me ... • 3. Comparing Hinduism And Islam Many people tend to confuse Muslims from Hindus and vice versa. After visiting each place of worship and examining each person individually, and listening to each person speak so highly about their religion and culture, you can clearly distinguish between the two. They have many similarities and differences, which establish a relationship between the two. Although in the past there has been many disputes over the two, this is due to their dissimilarities. The most common dispute between the two are because of the gods. Hinduism, think that gods are present in everything and anything while Islam believes in the holiness of Allah alone. The Islamic religions follows five pillars from the prophet. 1. Pilgrimage journey to the holy place in India, the Mosque. The goal of Hinduism is to break the cycle of rebirth, in attempt to attain salvation. On the other hand, the goal of the Islamic religion is to fulfill their responsibility of life by following the Quran and Hadith, and to live life with compassion towards all of Gods creations. When it comes to the place of worship, both religions differ in regards to statues and pictures. Shiva Vishnu contained many statues of their gods and it is a common practice to have these images. Although, ISOM does not contain any drawings, paintings, or statues regarding their gods. God cannot be seen, but sees all. They only have calligraphy and the temple is angled in such a way that it faces Mecca. Islam comes from the Arabic root word of Salema which translates to peace, submission, and obedience. Islam is submission to the will of God and obedience to His rules. Both positions are highly involved in maintaining the computer systems in an organization, and, in some smaller firms, the position may be handled by the same individual. However, while there are significant similarities between systems administration and network administration, there are differences in the roles as well. Basically speaking, system administration focuses on computer systems and networks, while network administration looks at maintenance and upkeep of the hardware and software that composes the network (Entrance Exams 2012, 2012). Because there is obviously an overlap between the two different job descriptions, it can be difficult to understand why it is so important for information technology professionals to differentiate between network and systems administration. However, when one understands the different roles of the two different positions, it becomes clear that, why they might overlap, and why a single individual might be able to handle the position in a small organization, there are actually substantial differences between the two positions. Particularly in a large organization, the two jobs may need to be handled by different professionals with different skill sets. It is because of these different skill sets that the industry has been so adamant about differentiating between systems and network ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. The Relationship Between Anaerobic Exercise And Aerobic... The relationship between anaerobic exercise and aerobic capacity Introduction Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is an important organic molecule in all living organisms, it is a biologist fuel for all living organisms.(Vanputte et al. 2014) When the energy stored in ATP is used, ATP will be broken down to adenosine triphosphate and inorganic phosphorous (Astrand 1956). Cell Respiration is the way that the human body produces more ATP, and there are four parts in total which is glycolysis, Link Reaction, Krebs cycle and Electron Transport Chain respectively. However, if when oxygen is not present in the cell, then the private undergoes alcoholic fermentation and lactate formatted in the process of anaerobic respiration (Peeters Weem et al. 2007). While physical activities of moderate intensity (e.g. Marathon and swimming) are supported by aerobic metabolism, a high intensity activity (e.g. 100m race) is an anaerobic metabolism process because the human body muscle needs a large amount of energy in a short period of time, and the lungs cannot put enough oxygen in the blood steam to keep up the need of muscle energy. It generally is used only for short bursts of the body. (BrianMac Sports Coach 2011) There is a positive proportion between demands on the aerobic energy system during physical activity and demands for oxygen delivered to the muscles. Generally, increase the demands on aerobic energy also increase the demands for oxygen delivered to the muscle (Medbo and Tabata 1993). ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Character Of Simon As An Allegory Of Jesus Christ The character of Simon, from the novel Lord of the Flies , is often viewed as an allegory of Jesus Christ, which is highly important, as Simon plays a significant role through the novel. Simon and Christ do not only share natural, unconditional kindness, there are many parallels to be drawn with Simon s and Jesus lives. Many would argue that the following arguments discussed are more than just a coincidence, and that Golding intended and/or based Simon on Christ. Firstly, a main reason why it can be interpreted that Simon is an allegory of Christ, is their role that they both had society which can be described as controversial and tendentious; essentially, they are both viewed as outcasts. This can be shown when he said: Maybe, he said hesitantly, maybe there is a beast [...] What I mean is . . . maybe it s only us [...] We could sort of . . . . This tells us that the concept of the beast being an illusion of fear, is a very taboo and a neglected concept on the island. Moreover, the repetition of the word maybe and the use of could , indicates that Simon is very precarious with his wording and does not want to Ralph to think of him as batty , as referenced numerous times through the novel. Therefore, it could be argued that maybe and could connotes open mindedness, and willingness to express ideas peacefully, not by force, because those words sound very open and free to interpretation. This contrasts with considerable extent that Jack and the other boys ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A variety of foods also provide calcium to the benefit of the body. Both sources of calcium are detailed below. Without a doubt, the best food sources of calcium include dairy products. • 13. The Music Of Electronic Dance Music Tracing as far back as the 1940s when sound pioneers began their own movement known as musique concrete, sampling, evolved from simple sound collage. Now it has evolved to the act of taking a portion of one sound recording and reusing it as an instrument or sound recording in a different song or piece. Today it has become an integral part of many music genres today. Samples often consist of one part of another song, such as a lyric or rhythm break, and used to create a beat for another song. The experimental musicians did not get permission from the artists whose work they were using or from the copyright owner while they were using them to create their own music. It began getting popular in hip hop when it was just played in local dance parties so they were not obligated to receive copyright clearance in order to play this music at events. As the 1970s approached, DJs were experimenting with vinyl by having two turntables and an audio mixer going at the same time and manipulating them. Leading on into 1980s, electronic dance music was in the making and picking up on sampling after being influenced by hip hop. It went on to spread to indie rock, contemporary R B, and industrial music. The digital sampler was invented after that to enable musicians to record any sound at the touch of a button, making sampling simpler. Typical sample instruments consist of grand pianos, pipe organs, violins, cellos, wind and percussion instruments. This can include voices and non traditional ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 26. Descriptive Essay About Times Square When you mention New York to anyone, they automatically think about Times Square. This beautiful place with skyscrapers, Central Park, and a unique transportation system. However, if you were to ask me what I think about New York; I believe the skyscrapers block the sun, Central park is just a regular park for dogs, and the subway trains rarely run consistently especially in the mornings. I have lived in New York for 18 years, and I have yet to understand what everyone likes about the Big Red Apple. Growing up as a resident of New York, one is taught that there s an opportunity in every corner, but that s not exactly what I see. I have gone to all the tourist sights, and have yet to find it as fascinating as other states such as: California, Florida, Virginia, Boston or even Washington D.C.. Times Square was beautiful in the beginning, but then you get harassed by every person with a costume on, or even if you take a picture with Elmo they charge you five dollars. Everything is also overpriced, no one should be paying a hundred dollars to ride on a horse, or paying three dollars per minute on a bicycle ride. Many neighborhoods have changed, if you go down to Brooklyn it is now hipster, and isn t the way it was before which was considered the ghetto. Everyone is paying for an experience that can be found in any state and at any time. Also, the traffic that goes on in the trains and on the streets is insane. Whether you take the Long Island expressway, the Clearview expressway or any other expressway you are going to find traffic. New york is probably known as one of the most rat infested city. There are many programs that try to end the rat dilemma, but the rat population is so large that it s hard to control. Not only are rats found on the train, they are also found in neighborhoods such as the Bronx. Many people complain about the rat situation to the city, but the homeowners take no action when it s time to clean up their own mess (Bragdon et al., 2007 2009). • 30. Ancient Egyptian Civilization The ancient Egyptian civilization is arguably the oldest civilization in the world. It is believed to have emerged around 5,500 years ago, although some scholars have estimated an even earlier date. During the predynastic period the Egyptians were not united, but as the Sahara desert expanded many people began moving their settlements around the Nile River. These settlements started coming together to form towns. As these towns progressed they developed many new ideas to help the society run smoother. However the total unification and start of the ancient Egyptian civilization did not happen, until Hierakonpolis expanded and conquered Naqada. The ancient Egyptian civilization was now created. Since this civilization was one of the first in the world, there was no structure to start with. In order to function as a thriving civilization, the Egyptians had to accomplish agricultural, architectural, medical, and educational advancements. The ancient Egyptian s advancements in agriculture is one of the driving forces that lead to the success of their empire. The Egyptian civilization came together because of the need for fertile soil and a constant supply of water. Although the Nile was a constant supply of water, the Egyptians still needed to find a way to bring the water to their crops. • 31. The Relation Between Cognition And Language The relation between cognition and language has been a curious topic for many decades now. Cognition plays a dynamic role within linguistic expression Most of current discussion in layman s crowd is on a speaker s ability to impart influence on an audience. We study the power of language in propaganda. We look at the sway that specific words have on an individual s emotions. Linguistic scholars have looked into the opposite the influence of words on the speaker. Around the world there are almost 8000 languages spoken. Unsurprisingly, with this range come significant differences in what is spoken and understood in each language, from information conveyed by each word to what kind of informative words are even included in the language. So how does one s language influence one s thoughts? This question has been disputed since the Sapir Whorf hypothesis, also known as linguistic relativity hypothesis, implicated that a language s features determines its speaker s thoughts. (danza) the idea dated centuries back, but this was the first substantial hypothesis, formed during 1930 s based on the thoughts of two linguists Edward Sapir and Benjamin Lee Whorf. Language seems to invade daily mental processes more so than previously expected. Products such as televisions, microwaves, and cars are necessities in homes in 2014. America was not always the consumerist nation it is now. With thousands of American servicemen returning home after World War II, the United States was filled with an energy that had long been repressed by an economic depression in the 1930 s. By the 1950 s, Americans were ready to move on from the war and start families. Thousands of jobs were created to accommodate all those retuning home, which caused the United States economy to flourish. Since more people were working and receiving higher wages, they were eager to start spending. Because of this, consumerism skyrocketed in the 1950 s. Along with positive post war attitudes, suburbanization and the development of new products can also be attributed to the rise of consumerism during this period. As many American men fought in World War II, the United States economy had slowly started to pick itself up after a devastating crash in 1929 that lasted over a decade. Most men were drafted into the war, which left many jobs open back in the States. To fill these jobs women and African Americans were recruited to fill them, thus making unemployment nearly nonexistent during this period. After World War II had ended, Americans came home with a determination to keep the recovery going. A key way to achieve this was to spend money. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Barlowe returned to England with two Croatans named Manteo and Wanchese, who were able to explain the government and natural features of the region to Raleigh. Based on this knowledge, Raleigh prepared a second journey, to be led by Sir Richard Grenville. Beethoven s 9th Symphony Analysis This production of Beethoven s 9th Symphony was presented by the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra in conjunction with The Lubbock Chorale and The Texas Tech University Choir. The performance was held in the Lubbock Civic Center Theatre on October 13th and 14th at 7:30p.m. As a performer in the University Choir, I was required to attend and perform both nights which allowed me the opportunity to observe two different audiences. The audience on the night of the 13th was obviously better prepared to handle such a long and mercurial major work. This was evident in the audience s reactions to the ends of movements. The long standing and unwritten rule of waiting until the end of a major work to clap was followed silently and diligently. This audience was mostly made up of adults obviously over the age of fifty that are regular attendees and patrons of the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra. Following thereafter in group size were the students, specifically Texas Tech and surrounding area high school students. At this performance the amount of attending children was few to none, as I could not see or hear any. The second audience mimicked the preceding audience in size and age, however, this audience s reaction of clapping at the end of movements was highly undesired by the performers, Maestro Cho, and the remaining members of the audience that understand the unwritten rules of attending these types of concerts. These types of reactions by inexperienced audiences make listening to or concentrating on great performances of beautiful music very difficult. Not only do these translate to distractions for the performers, but applause betwixt the movements can interrupt the flow of the work and thwart the intended effect that the composer and conductor wish to have on the audience. This audience reaction can also take away and distract from the atmosphere of the performance, which, in this case was a relatively small and intimate concert hall. • 38. The Approaches And Practices Of Language Teaching Essay The Approaches and Practices in Language Teaching Communicative Practices in Language Teaching What is communicative language teaching (CLT)? Brown (2014, p. 236) offered the following four interrelated characteristics as the definitions of CLT: 1. CLT helps students develop the four competences instead of merely focusing on their linguistic competence or grammatical competence 2. CLT enables learners to use the language for meaningful purposes in authentic situations. Learning language forms are not the aim of the approach, but to enable them to engage in authentic interactions 3. Fluency and accuracy activities complement each other as is seen in the underlying communicative techniques. 4. Students are expected to use the language naturally and in unrehearsed contexts It s important to engage students in doing some communicative practices. Richard (2006) explained that communicative practices are those activities that focus on exchanging real information and using language in an authentic context, thus the communication is based on the specific situation and not predictable. Communicative language teaching has been proven to be effective in improving students communicative abilities and other language skills. Richards and Rodgers (2001) also wrote that an important goal of communicative language teaching is to help students improve their communicative competence and other language skills. • 46. Voltaire s Candide As An Opportunity For Growth Or... As humans, we have choices: To change, to stay the same, to work, to rest; each choice provides an opportunity for growth or stagnation. Voltaire s Candide is a satire, originally published in 1759. The enlightenment ideals which originated in the 17th century and continued into the 18th century are highly prevalent in Candide. The work includes vehement criticism of nobility, philosophy, religion, and basic human cruelty. The main criticism of Voltaire s work is directed toward philosophical optimism, a widely accepted idea at the time. Philosophical optimism is the conviction that We live in the best of all possible worlds. Voltaire s writing is in line with the philosophy stated in John Locke s Second Treatise of Civil Government on labor which is that every man has a property in his own person: this nobody has any right to but himself. The labour of his body, and the work of his hands, we may say, are properly his. Whatsoever then he removes out of the state that nature hath provided, and left it in, he hath mixed his labour with, and joined to it something that is his own, and thereby makes it his property, as Candide encourages free will and labor in order to achieve a desired end. Voltaire s Candide employs the motifs of resurrection, hypocrisy, and crime in order to amplify the negative aspects of human nature, and in doing so, rejects the idea that we live in the best of all possible worlds and encourages the exercise of free will as well as making the choice ... This way, the author can tell you what all of the characters are thinking. A writer s choice of a type of narrator is crucial for the way a story is perceived by the reader. Guy de Maupassant uses a third person limited perspective and the narrator reveals the thoughts and feelings of one character. Explicit narration directly reveals the main character s internal and external conflict. Guy de Maupassant s limited third person narrator creates a vivid character, struggling to acknowledge her lower class and teaches a powerful theme about the dangers of envy . The symbolism throughout the story strengthens Mathilde s internal conflict about being in a lower class. Guy de Maupassant uses a third person limited narrator to characterize the depressed, ungrateful character, Mathilde, who is consumed with envy. Mathilde is described as pessimistic and jealous of wealthy, elegant women. Beautiful Mathilde Loisel was born into a family of clerks, and her utter conviction that her place in life is a mistake of destiny leads her to live her life in a constant rebellion against her circumstances. Her desire for wealth is a constant pain and distress. • 50. Community Oriented Policing Community Oriented Policing In spite of the fact that the United States still exceeds many other industrialized nations in overall crime and violent crime, it has been effective in decreasing its crime rate, particularly during the 1990s. While some coalitions have attributed this positive development to changes in socio demographic trends and rigid enforcement approaches, one coalition highlights the success of the community oriented policing and problem oriented policing in eradicating the root causes of crime (Stephens, 2003). While I don t believe that community oriented policing in the sole cause of decreased crime rates I do believe that it has its positive and negative sides. Community oriented policing is based on the complete ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The problem with this model is that it is difficult for police departments to dedicate officer to public relations while there are serious crimes that need to be prevented. The idea of the public reporting crimes to the police in a community meeting is acceptable but in many cases especially with the current economic crisis that we are facing, it is impossible for police departments to have officers strictly assigned to community police. As discussed earlier without full cooperation from both sides the practice of community police is ineffective. The community policing plan created by the City of Aberdeen in Maryland provides a good example of how the partnership between the police and members of the community can be effective for dealing with crimes. In order to promote the police and community s adoption of these new roles, the Mid Atlantic Regional Community Policing Institute (MARCPI), along with the Johns Hopkins University, will offer training to the police and the community. Both the police and the community have to learn how to change their thinking processes in order to deal with the problems in a proactive way, instead of the conventional reactive fashion. Through the training sessions, the members of the community, the police officers and city department heads will acquire the skills and knowledge for addressing problems.
