Language acquisition occurs through first and second language acquisition. First language acquisition is a spontaneous process that begins in infancy through interaction with other language users. It progresses through several stages from pre-language sounds to single words and eventually combining words and basic grammar. The ability to acquire any language is a human universal, not dependent on cultural or racial differences.
