Combustion sources such as furnaces and red heaters play a critical role in the process industry. Unfortunately, combustion requires large amounts of fuel (gas, fuel oil). As a result, combustion efficiency directly influences the performance and operational costs of production facilities. However, efficiency is not the only concern. Compliance and safety are major challenges as well.
Read this eBook to read more on combustion and fired heater optimization and deploy an analytical approach to improving safe & efficient operations.

Controlling Cavitation in Industrial Control ValvesCTi Controltech
Cavitation, in process control valves, refers to the formation of vapor spaces or bubbles within the valve cavity resulting from a rapid drop in pressure as liquid passes through the valve. When the bubbles transit to an area of higher pressure, the higher pressure causes the bubbles to implode, producing shockwaves which propagate through the liquid. These shockwaves can cause metal fatigue and excessive wear on the internals of the valve. The collapsing bubbles also make a discernible sound with accompanying vibration.

Paper Production
Modena Pennsylvania
Steam production plant was converted to provide independent servo
positioning motors for No 6 fuel oil and natural gas. Closer control
of the target steam set point and increased burner turndown helped
eliminate over and undershoot and greatly reduced cycling even
during periods of low load. This was a fairly old system but despite
this an excellent result was achieved. Initial indications from Tom
Krall of Sealed Air indicated that they are saving around three
gallons of oil per ton of paper. This works out to be around $30K
annually.

Unit 2 400HP Donlee boiler firing light oil.
The hotel energy monitoring calculated costs before and after
allowing for degree days and fluctuations in load. The units supply
steam absorption chillers so constant load as is the temperature year
to year. Variances in fuel costs were calculated and the savings were
run at $250 a day, just over $90,000 per year.
Most saving in this case was from improved
combustion and this was poor prior to installation.
O2 was reduced from greater than 8% across the
firing range to 3% at high fire to 4 % at low fire.
Variable speed drive on the fan assisted in electrical
savings calculated at 42% of previous costs. Based
on the saving all three boiler on the site are now fully
converted
