I gave this talk at Lean Startup Machine Palo Alto. Lean Startup Machine is a metrics-driven startup competition where teams learn to identify the key risks in their business model through hands-on mentorship and our framework of tools.
In the same way as the web is quickly extending onto the mobile platform, we are starting to see the web moving further into the physical world. Many emerging technologies are beginning to offer physical-world inputs and outputs; multi-touch iPhones, gestural Wii controllers, RFID-driven museum interfaces, QR-coded magazines and GPS-enabled mobile phones.
These technologies have been used to create very useful services that interact with the web such as Plazes, Nokia Sports Tracker, Wattson, Tikitag and Nike Plus. But the technologies themselves often overshadow the user-experience and so far designers haven’t had language or patterns to express new ideas for these interfaces.
This talk will focus on a number of design directions for new physical interfaces. We will discuss various ideas around presence, location, context awareness, peripheral interaction as well as haptics and tangible interfaces. How do these interactions work with the web? What are the potentials and problems, and what kinds of design approaches are needed?

3 Rapid Design Activities to a Customer-Centered Product RoadmapBennett King
When developing new product concepts, customer input is often overlooked or brought in later in the process. This leads to early concept generation based on assumption rather than real customer need and can lengthen the overall product development process. In this presentation we discuss three design activities, Formative Design Research, concept development using Design Studio, and Concept Value Testing. These activities can be used to bring the customer voice into the process from the beginning, rapidly create and iterate concepts based on customer-centered requirements, and validate concepts at the earliest point possible, mitigating risks and decreasing development costs.
Using a recent project with Optimal Workshop as an example, this presentation discusses how these tools can be used in conjunction to rapidly create new products. It discusses the goals and techniques of Formative Design Research to understand user behaviors and needs. It talks about bringing Design Studio exercises to your entire team, allowing for cross-functional expertise and rapid iteration to shape the best possible concepts. Then wraps up with an overview of Concept Value Testing, using the Kano Model, that lets you validate or iterate your concept as fast as possible.

Linking UX Ideas for an Aha Moment from Non-EmpathizersBalanced Team
Chris Nodder, Chris Nodder Consulting
I will describe a specific set of tools I've been using in a particular order that really helps all the members of a project (makers, monetizers and managers) understand user needs and build for those needs. None of the methods I use are new, but by focusing on the idea of empathizers and systemizers I ensure that there is sufficient continuity between the activities we perform that non-empathizers can still understand that they are not the user, and agree on a sensible user-centric way forward. This stops arguments and focuses everyone on the team towards customer based solutions.
There is always a paper trail back to observed user data. There is always enough information pinned to the wall that people can point and say "see, this is why we're doing what we are doing". There is always enough verification built in to the process that we know whether we're on track before we invest in code. I'll describe the concept of systemizers and empathizers, share the set of tools I use and show the flow of information between each tool.

What does it take to get your findings read, heard and acted upon while they are still relevant? How do you get the people who need to act on your research interested in your findings? How do you make your findings and reports more usable?
Whether you're conducting research for a well established product/service or a startup that hasn't fully penetrated the market yet, you're going to have to talk to past, current and potential customers, and the most efficient way to do that is to conduct remote one-on-one usability tests.
Analyzing User Research Interview WorkshopDiane Loviglio
What are you going to do with all that great data you just collected from your user research interviews? Synthesizing all that data - if you don’t have a method, can take forever - but you’re a startup, so you need to make sense of that data within hours not weeks. In this workshop, we’ll actually tackle a real problem, interview each other, take notes and then use that data to learn actual synthesis techniques that you can use no matter what your subject matter is.
Building a Product, from a User Researcher Point of ViewDiane Loviglio
This is a workshop I gave at 500 Startups on incorporating user research early on in your product definition.
500 Startups is a new kind of seed fund and startup accelerator. We believe successful internet startups are born from usable design, customer-focused metrics, and online distribution.
Secret Ingredients - Global Service Jam 12Diane Loviglio

There's An App for That: Exploratory Research with Mobile UsersDiane Loviglio
My talk for User Research Friday 11, where the theme was "off the web" - looking at observing behavior across mobile devices and physical environments.
Research Skills for Developers: How to Talk to Your UsersDiane Loviglio
Whether you're in stealth mode or generating revenue, there will be a time when research is an essential part of your decision making process. Learn techniques such as recruiting, observing, in-depth interviewing and usability testing which will help you build better products.
Whether you're conducting research for a well established product or service or a startup that hasn't fully penetrated the market yet, you're going to have to talk to past, current and potential customers, so you might as well use that time effectively. You'll learn how to write questions that will keep you on-task and how to get the really interesting data out of someone whether they are a rambler or a quiet one.

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
