WEB DESIGN FINAL PROJECT
                                     (Required for Web Design Certificate)

Print Version (requires Adobe Acrobat Reader)

In order to receive a web design certificate, you must complete all required units and the final project
outlined below.

Using what you have learned (HTML, Non-Designers Web Book, Web Design Workshop, Macromedia Suite,
Paint Shop Pro/Photoshop, FrontPage & JavaScript), create your own portfolio web site (web design
company site with a minimum of TEN created pages). You need to really think about the design of the
site. The site must incorporate all of the techniques that you have learned throughout the course. I
would highly recommend that you review all of the Web Design Workshop book. Study the example sites
in the book or at http://www.virtuallastchaper.com. Your design should be professional, easy to navigate,
attractive (use of graphics, colors, etc.) load quickly, and well thought out. The site must include the
following:

    • A web site plan. (Review chapter 5 of the Web Design Workshop). Review chapter 9 of the Web
Design Workshop, draw out (on pen and paper) a site map and thumbnail sketches for your site.
    • A web site planning worksheet for clients.
    • A splash (opening) page that directs users to other parts of your web site. Include image maps or
         rollovers.
    • Bio about yourself
    • Resume
    • Reference page
    • Original graphics (All graphics on the site should be your own artwork) Alt tags and height and
width tags should be used on all images.
    • Services offered and pricing
    • Flash movie
    • Site map
    • A page that links to other sites that you have created
    • All pages must include your email address, a navigation system, and date last updated.
    • Create Meta Tags for your site and register your site with the search engines. For additional
information on Meta Tags and registering your site with search engines click here
    • Test your site in various browsers on the teacher workstation (Netscape 4.7 & 6, Opera, Web TV,
IE). Does your site look the same on all browsers, is it color safe? If your site is not compatible in
         all browsers, explain why.
    • This web site is the beginning of your web design business site. Do some research on purchasing a
domain and hosting for your portfolio site http://www.putertutor.net/photo/hosting.htm. What
domain name would you want to use for your web design business? Check to see if the domain
name that you chose is available here. You do not need to actually purchase the domain and
hosting, but you should gather information so you are prepared to do this in the future. Write a
short email to me rwood@cccoe.k12.ca.us on the domain name that you would choose and the
         hosting provider.
    • Post a link to your final project in the Members Area of the Message Board.

In order to obtain employment in the web design field it is critical that you build a portfolio that includes
sample web sites for employers to review.

Suggestions:

    • Contact a local Non-Profit Corporation and ask them if you can volunteer to create a web site for
         their organization.
    • Contact a local business or a friend’s business.
    • Create a site marketing a fictitious company or product.

• Create a site about your hometown or favorite place to visit, include places to stay, spots to visit,
restaurants to dine at and other interesting facts.
    • Try to obtain a paid or non-paid internship.
    • BE CREATIVE!!
