Odysseus Gaining Wisdom In Homer s Odyssey
Daniel Lam

September 10, 2015
Bittersweet Wisdom Confucius once said, By three methods we may learn wisdom: First, by
reflection, which is noblest; second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third by experience, which is
the bitterest. Confucius explains three ways to acquire wisdom : by reflection, imitation, and
experience. This quote can be connected to Homer s, The Odyssey, where Odysseus uses his
experience to gain wisdom. In the beginning of The Odyssey, Odysseus, a champion and king, is
called to adventure. Odysseus must embark on a new journey in order to return to Ithaca and retake his
throne. During his travels, he faces many obstacles that prolong his homecoming but in return he gains

Odysseus does not tell his men many things and he keeps those secrets to himself. In one example of
the Odyssey, Odysseus is given a gift from the god of the winds, Aiolos. The gift, a bag of winds,
takes all the stormy winds and conceals them inside a cowskin bag. Odysseus crew, curious about
what is in the bag, decides to open the bag and check what is inside. Thinking that there is gold and
silver inside, they greedily open it emanating a windy gale. Odysseus describes the opening of the bag
saying, A scandalous motion, but it was passed. They opened the bag, the winds leaped out; at once a
gale caught them, and carried them off to sea tearing their hair as they left their native land behind.
(Homer 113). A very scandalous motion indeed for the island of Ithaca was visible to Odysseus and
his me. Odysseus is punished for his poor leadership. He does not tell his crew that there are the
stormy winds inside the bag, leaving his crew inquisitive. Odysseus also, fell into a deep sleep...
(Homer 112) which gives the crew freedom because there is no supervision. This flaw gave Odysseus
the wisdom of responsibility. Odysseus acts as the leader and tells his men what to do. Unfortunately,
Odysseus s men still disobey him on Thrinacia. The men take all of Helios cattle and they feast on
them although Odysseus had already warned the men. Odysseus, having learned from poor leadership,
said, My friends, we have food and drink in the ship, so we must keep our hands off these cattle or we
may suffer for it. (Homer 144). Odysseus learns but his crew does not gain any wisdom. Odysseus
tries to take leadership by warning his crew but they were all too greedy. Under the circumstances,
Helios called upon Zeus and terror struck upon Odysseus men leaving only Odysseus alive. Odysseus

Media s Promotion of Consumerism
Media s Promotion of Consumerism Demian Estrada The advertising industry spends $12 billion per
year on ads targeted to children, bombarding young audiences with persuasive messages through
media such as television and the Internet. The average child is exposed to more than 40,000 TV
commercials a year, according to studies. And ads are reaching children through new media
technologies and even in schools with corporate sponsored educational materials and product
placements in students textbooks. American Psychological Association(APA) From the moment you

To explain this problematic issue the media entities have come up with some questions like; What do
consumers need? Is it a real or false need? Can we come up with a common and definitive set of
universal human needs? What is it that consumers really need? Is it perhaps in order to stay alive?
These questions can lead to different answers that in essence come down to particular human
behaviors. (Colin Campbell 282). One example of human behavior with regards to the food we eat is
that most of the world s population eats more that they really need to maintain proper nutrition and
healthy lives. Another is shown in the types of vehicles we drive. Is it really necessary to drive a huge
4 wheel drive, fuel inefficient SUV around the city or on a commute to work? Furthermore, is it really
necessary to have 50 pairs of shoes? In order to specify some one s needs it is essential to have a
comprehensive knowledge of that person s background and ambitions and their needs and desires. The
media is creating desires that we confuse with needs. (Colin Campbell 280 283). The most effective
ads are ones that we don t even recognize as advertisements. Like ads we see in television series,
news, movies and even on clothing. We are manipulated quickly by common objects, characters, or
ideas that are transformed into things that all Americans desire, hope for, fear, believe the most. (Jack

Animal Testing Is A Catastrophe
Animal testing is a catastrophe. Do you agree? Animals play a significant role in our existence, they
involve in food chain and help in the sustainability of bio diversity. Unfortunately they entered the
scientific field through the experiments of new drugs. The utilization of creatures in exploratory
investigations in the UK can be followed back at any rate similarly as the seventeenth Century with
Harvey s analyses on various creature species intending to show blood flow. Crosswise over Europe,
the utilization of creatures in experimental examination started to grow over the nineteenth Century, to
some degree upheld by the improvement of analgesics which had already made creature research
incomprehensible. In 1876, parliament passed the Cruelty to Animals Act, the principal enactment
went for directing creature tests. Over the late nineteenth and the twentieth hundreds of years, the
extension of restorative science implied that the quantities of creatures utilized as a part of
examination extended relentlessly, quickened by the Medicines Act, 1968, which gave a clearer
manual for the utilization of creatures in wellbeing testing in the wake of the Thalidomide catastrophe.
The quantity of creatures utilized rose to more than 5.5 million in 1970 after which indicate the
numbers started decrease quickly. This extensive development mirrored a developing therapeutic field;

Islamic Legal Reformers Of The Twentieth Century
I. Introduction As Talal Asad has noted, religion is by no means disappearing in the modern world,
and, [i]f anything is agreed upon, it is that a straightforward narrative of progress from the religious to
the secular is no longer acceptable. (Asad: 2003: 1.) At the same time, and in relation particularly to
the contemporary rise of Islam, [t]he question of secularism has emerged as an object of academic
argument and of practical dispute. (Ibid.) The common view is that Islam and secular modernism
constitute a duality, forever at odds, while others argue that the religious and the secular are a false
duality and are indeed mutually constitutive of each other. (Agrama: 2). Viewed either way, the
resurgence of Islam gives rise to important questions regarding its relationship to the secular modern
state. In this short paper, I propose to engage with the works of two Islamic legal reformers of the
twentieth century: Mohammed Abduh s classic Theology of Unity , first published in 1897, and
Ahmad Safwat s lesser known article, The Theory of Mohammedan Law, published in a British law
journal in 1920. Though quite different, both works are emblematic of this period in Islamic history
when traditional Islamic law struggled to identify its proper role with respect to the increasing power
and transcendence of the modern secular state. Moreover, each work is representative of two views of
Islam and secular modernism and represent the genesis of both

The Mona Lisa
One of my most favorite paintings in the history of Western art must be the Mona Lisa. This sixteenth
century oil painting is one of the world s most famous paintings. It was painted by the famous Italian
painter, architect, sculpture, draftsman, and engineer Leonardo da Vinci. It is well known that the
Mona Lisa painting is portrayed as the most visited, viewed, written, and sung about painting in the
world. This portrait took Leonardo da Vinci about three to four years to complete. Mona Lisa is said to
be one of his favorite art work; therefore, he took his time painting and finishing it.
The Mona Lisa represents a composition with an immense value. The subject of the painting itself is
mysterious; therefore, the fascination and interest in da Vinci s work attracted millions across the
world. This caused a huge interest in the audience because the Mona Lisa has no identity. Everyone is
curious and inquisitive to know who this beautiful woman is. Until this day, no one really knows the
real identity of Mona Lisa. In addition, the smile on the face of the woman in the painting caused
mixed thoughts. This painting is considered to be one of the greatest mysteries as pertaining to the
identity of the subject.
The portrait consists of a figure of a woman with vital expressions that added a significance feature to
the painting. It is set within a mountainous landscape illustrated in the softest

The, Wildlife, And The Natural Land, By Henry David Thoreau
Just years after the Industrial Revolution, a time at which engineering and the economy became the
main concerns of the population, many of the American people forgot the importance of the land that
provided the resources that sustained them. In a time where there was believed to be nowhere but
society to reside in, few refuted the idea that the wilderness was really so uncivilized. In his 1845
memoir, Henry David Thoreau describes his experiences living in a quaint cabin, in the wilderness ,
alongside Walden Pond near Concord, Massachusetts. Presenting his findings of being self reliable,
Thoreau depicts what his life was like alone in the woods with only nature to ease one s mind and
solitude to provide company. With detailed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He accordingly conveys this idea by stating that society only believes in intrinsic value and only once
one can seclude themselves from the portrait of society can one come to find instrumental value.
Continuing with his descriptions of the Walden Pond during winter, Thoreau presents the idea of
overconsumption and sustainability throughout the book. While observing the ice cutters at Walden
Pond, Thoreau comments on human effort to exploit nature, arguing that the actions are in vain as
nature regenerates much faster than it can be threatened, which is very debatable due to the knowledge
that there is only a finite amount of resources on the planet. Thoreau thoroughly believes in his idea of
self reliance and states that there are only four necessities that should determine one s ability to
survive: food, shelter, clothing, and fuel, many of which he believes nature provides graciously. This
refutes the idea that prosperity is dependent widescale economic surplus. Thoreau makes his argument
clear, writing that any attempt at luxury is likely to prove more as a hinderance that an aid to one s
individual improvement as in Economy when he writes Most men, even in this comparatively free
country, through mere ignorance and mistake, are so

Homemade Spaghetti Sauce Is Cheaper From Scratch Or From A...
As a frugal cook, I often make things from scratch rather than buying a mix or packaged food item.
This works well in many cases, but in others, it s actually cheaper to buy the pre packaged item.
Recently, I decided to look at whether spaghetti sauce is cheaper from scratch or from a can. Canned
vs. Homemade Spaghetti Sauce: Price Looking at price alone, it s actually an easy call. At Winco
Foods, I bought 26.5 ounce can of Del Monte Mushroom Spaghetti Sauce for 78 cents. At most stores,
in fact, I can find canned spaghetti sauce for one dollar or less per can. For comparison purposes, I
also purchased one 14 ounce can and one 8 ounce can of tomato sauce, and one four ounce can of
mushrooms (stems and pieces). This came to over a dollar and that doesn t even include the onions,
herbs and spices that I already had at home. In terms of price alone, the canned spaghetti sauce is
obviously the better buy. But for me, there s more to it than that. Canned vs. Homemade Spaghetti
Sauce: Taste and appearance Do my family and I actually prefer the canned sauce or the homemade
sauce? Based on taste and appearance, I would favor the homemade sauce. The canned sauce is overly
sweet, and the mushrooms in the mushroom sauce are nearly invisible they must be finely minced
(probably leftover bits from something else). Homemade sauce has tasty chunks and pieces of
mushrooms, and I control the herbs and spices, adjusting them to my family s taste. Canned vs.

Dogville Mise En Scene Analysis
Mise en scène and multiple interpretations in relation to a film Dogville by Lars von Trier
In my essay, I am going to consider the possible interpretations of the Mise en scene details in relation
to a film Dogville (2003) by Lars von Trier. I will be exploring how the same details can be
interpreted in different ways, depending on the viewer s background, attitude, perspective, and so on.
Dogville is the city drawn in chalk; the city with a 3 hour psychedelia; the city that reflects the
ugliness of human nature.
The surface is often deceptive. The whole town is a convention. The furniture could be pink, there
could be cacti in the Elm Street, and the town could be located not in the mountains but on a sunny
beach. Von Trier has never treated the scenery with respect. He needs it just as an addition to
something more important. This approach is perfectly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
And in the final scene, when the moon rises over the city, Grace accepts the rules of the game The
moon has always been a symbol of deception, illusion, melancholy wrong light, which is only a pale
reflection of the hot sun.
However, once you begin to interpret the meaning of Dogville, you will get into the realm of
uncertainty. Von Trier has made everything to make the viewers feel different while watching his
movie with its artificial decorations, British accent of the voiceover and formalism in acting and
dialogues.
On the one hand, Dogville is nothing but an attempt to show a realistic American image. Presenting
Dogville in Cannes, von Trier said, this is America, but seen from my point of view and that it is not a
historical or scientific, but emotional movie. Here are the most important words of the director: In my
American films, I reflect the information that comes to me, and my feelings about it. Of course, this is
not the whole truth, as I have not been there. I am an American, so I make films about

Treblinka Extermination Camp
An extermination camp in Poland built in 1942 in addition to the pre existing labor camp that killed
over 900,000 prisoners. It served as a Nazi killing center for deported citizens from ghettos and other

Jews brought in trucks from local neighborhoods. A track was later constructed for the arrivals of
deportees and the shipping of the Jews belongings. The camp s first commander was Dr. Irmfried

How To Understand Gymnastics
Express and Reflect
Everybody knows that feeling when you finally accomplish something that you have been working on
for a long time. This is a major part of Gymnastics. The sport is all about working up towards your
goal. It s all about practicing until you feel confident or when you finally reach where you wanted to
be. You have to just get over the fact that yes, you may fall or not get it on the first try but if you never
try it will go nowhere. Also if you do get a skill you have to keep practicing or you will get out of
practice and loose the feeling and sensation of that trick. So I guess that practice makes perfect applies
perfectly to this situation and it can tell you a lot.

Essay about The Effects of Class Structure in the 1920 s
Class Structures in the 1920 s
The emerging inequitable class systems and antagonisms of the nineteen twenties saw the traditional
order and moral values challenged, as well as the creation of great wealth for few and poverty for
many. The Great Gatsby, written by Francis Scott Fitzgerald, explores the causes and effects of the
unbalanced class structures. Fitzgerald outlines the idea that the desire to accumulate wealth and status
is a common ambition amongst the lower classes; when that desire is reached, the traditional upper
class is challenged by the emerging newly wealthy, which finally leads to destructive consequences.

Gatsby comes from the Platonic conception of Gatz and by comparing Gatsby to Platonic Idealism,
the idea of Gatsby becomes immortalized and genuine. Gatsby, representing the lower class desires to

Buchanan, the embodiment of the traditional upper class, is a domineering man who desires only one
result, to maintain his status and wealth. Tom obsesses over maintaining a pure, rich class of
Caucasians that he believes should never be challenged: It s up to us, who are the dominant race, to

Questions of Need: Universal Preschool Would Duplicate the Existing Preschool System
The Heritage Foundation report noted that 45 early childhood education programs already existed,
costing an estimated $45 million each year, and that many of the programs are duplicative and
ineffective, failing to serve the needs of children from low income families (Burke and Sheffield,
2013). In addition, the evidence showing that the public sector is a good provider of early childhood
education is lacking. The 2001 Gilliam study reviewed state run preschool programs and found that

Photography As A Pioneer For The Digital Image
The Digital Image is relatively new in the large scheme of things, with the advancement of technology
also came the evolution of this medium. The first instance of digital imaging came with the invention
of the camera. Photography as we know it today is usually considered to have begun in 1839 when
Louis Jacques Mande Daguerre released the Daguerreotype image. Photography would remain from
this point a relatively expensive and crude medium that would slowly progress through the years. In
1877 Eadweard Muybridge created a fast shutter that was capable of capturing motion. This in itself
was iconic and Eadweard would later be considered a pioneer for the digital image due to his work on
locomotion (famously the galloping horse). Photography ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Expressive type is essentially a method of design where text is used to create some kind of image. As
shown in the references, there is a finished piece of work for this task, the poster uses type to create
the character Tyrion from the TV show Game of Thrones. The type in the poster is actually a quote
from the character and is formed in a way to shape the characters stance from an iconic moment for
him. The development of this poster involved using a previously created illustration of the character
and mixing it with typography. The original image was placed into the Adobe Illustrator software as it
provided a lot of tools for type. The text was then written out and reshaped to form the body of the
character. The typeface was selected carefully as it was meant to match the minimalistic style of the
previous illustration, therefore the typeface was sans serif. After this part of the development was
complete, the image was moved into Photoshop where the colour from the image would be given to
the text. A few basic finishing touches were given by adding blocks of colour near certain letters to
help bring the shape of the character out.
Every typeface we see, be it a street sign or a billboard has likely been carefully planned out to
provoke certain thoughts and feelings into the reader. Before looking into the design side of
typography it is important to understand the history. Way back in the 1400 s the standard was
handwritten type, this was obviously very time

the method for listening to music had moved from CD to the internet down loading, Billboard

From this point, Billboard started accumulating the music play data on the Internet, and reflected that

Detroit Institute Of Art Case Study
The Detroit Institute of Art (DIA) is a museum founded in 1885 and continues to thrive in the present
day (Museum Fact Sheet). The people who own it could be the donors who give generously towards
maintaining the museum or the organizations that give grants to maintain the collections for public
viewing. Additionally, Macomb, Wayne and Oakland counties own shares in the property because they
have contributed towards a 10 years millage tax. There is a volunteer board of directors that runs
operations through supervising the museum director. This group invests its skills and lends its
consultancy towards supporting the museum on the basis of the 1997 agreement. The city of Detroit
owns the artwork, however, it cannot sell it without opposition from several corners. ... Show more

The financial crisis has forced the governor (Rick Snyder) to take action and that is why he hired an
emergency manager, Kevyn Orr. The latter believes that the best way to deal with the problem is to
sell some highly priced items from the museum to cover the debts. According to the law (Chapter 9 of
the State Law), Orr has the right to sell some items as a form of protection of the municipal from
bankruptcy (Gallagher). On the other hand, there is no judge with the capacity to force liquidation of
the assets housed in the DIA. However, Orr s solution is not clear cut as it faces several challenges. In
the first place, the corporate groups and individuals who have given to the DIA are likely to oppose
the sale. The non profit board of directors alongside the donors makes their decisions according to the

United States Political System
The United States political system has undergone a tremendous evolution since the inception of the
United States constitutional democracy. In our class discussion from Chapter 1, I learned that the
ongoing judicial review and institutional amendment processes that have worked in the political
system over time are what have made the system realize such an evolution. Numerous changes based
on the philosophies of individuals such as John Locke occurred in the Constitution as the political
system continued to grow. Various changes in light of the rationalities of people, for example, John
Locke happened in the Constitution as the political framework kept on advancing. One of these

The privilege to worship religion in a free setting. This is an intriguing and convincing one for me.
Vote based system functions admirably when the greater part of its residents feel that they find
themselves able to have some effective reach that is free from outside control. The issue of religion is
one that falls into this class. People need to feel some level of profound satisfaction and ought to have
the capacity to pick uninhibitedly how that way is taken. It can be through religion, deep sense of
being, or ID with a code of honor that is comprehended by them and only them. The length of this
right does not meddle with each others entitlement to be allowed to sit untethered, the vote based
obligation of resilience and acknowledgment is progressed and I think that this is of basic significance
in a law based state. More spiritual fulfillment within in any individual. I think the image I would
utilize is something like an open field for deep sense spirituality is an open field where one can choose
where they wish to graze into the blue skies or whatever they may choose. I believe that if the United
States was like many other countries and controlling which way or what our religion is would be very
crazy. Having the right privilege to worship God or whom ever or what ever makes this country
democratic. If I personal did not have the freedom of

New York City Water Supply Systems
HISTROY OF NEW YORK CITY WATER SUPPLY SYSTEMS
Historical Overview
Between the 1840s and the 1960s, New York City established the greatest metropolitan water
distribution system internationally. Even though NYC s Water system is a work in progress it can be
considered one of the best in respects to its quality, reliability and innovative management.
At the beginning of the 19th Century, most American cities were small in size and usually coastal.
Their infrastructure was primitive even by the standards of that time period. Street lighting was rare,
roads were unpaved, and water supplies were really inadequate. The water surrounding NYC was tidal
and mostly saltwater. They had no direct access to fresh water. Initially, Residents depended on wells
or rain water cisterns for their water needs. External wastes contaminated the water aquifers. Rain
water did not help increase the main supply. Flush toilets were introduced to the city in 1819 that
increased the need for water usage. (Weidner, 1974, p. 55)
The establishment of city water supply was regarded as a private, residential matter rather than a
public function in the early 19th Century (Blake, 1956). The State depended on privately owned
companies to supply water for its residents rather than undertaking the responsibilities themselves.
The Manhattan Water Company was chartered in 1799. They had the sole rights to supply water to the
city. They had a reservoir built in the city to provide over 400 of NYC most elite

Wal Mart As A Symbol Of The United States
Overview: Sam Walton founded Wal Mart in 1962 in Roger, Arkansas. In a little less than 10 years,
Wal Mart had 38 locations and was opening two stores per year. In 1970, the company started trading
in the New York Stock Exchange. By 1979, the company announced a record $1billion sales and it
became the first company to do so. Wal Mart reached record after record during those years, and by
the end of 1989, Wal Mart reported after tax profits of $1billlion. Wal Mart now has become a symbol
of the United States, and it is the biggest employer in the world with approximately 2.2 million
workers with operations in 27 different countries. Wal Mart s revenue is gargantuan; they were ranked
number one by Fortune Magazine in 2001, with a revenue of $219.8bn. At this point, Wal Mart sales
are around $1billlion per day. The incredible rise of Wal Mart from a little store in Arkansas to one of
the biggest companies todayis astonishing; however, it has not come without its problems. During the
early 1980 s, employees tried to unionize in one of the distribution centers in Arkansas. Walton told
the workers that if they unionize, he would remove the employees profit sharing plan and replace them
with other employees. Another scandal Wal Mart faced was in its Made in America campaign, during
which most of the clothes sold in Wal Mart were manufactured in sweatshops in developing countries.
The video The Age of Wal Mart, which aired in 2004, presented many ethical issues

Role Of Female Nature In Frankenstein
In the novel Frankenstein, the author Mary Shelley reinforced the role of female nature in a book that
is predominantly male oriented. The female character is an underlying feature throughout the whole
novel. For example, when Victor Frankenstein created his Monster from dead body parts, he
disregarded the laws of female reproduction. Both Anne K. Mellor and Jonathon Bate argue that
Victor defiled the feminine nature when he created his Monster from unnatural means. Mellor argued
in her essay, Possessing Nature: The Female in Frankenstein, that Victor eliminated the necessity to
have females at all (355). There will not be a need for females if new beings are created in a
laboratory. The disruption of mother nature is one of the novel s original sins (479). In Bate s essay,
Frankenstein and the State of Nature, he argued that Victor Frankenstein broke the balance between
female principles of maternity and mother nature (477). Frankenstein broke nature and undermined
the role of females. The argument of Mellor was more persuasive than the discussion of Bate because
she was able to provide more evidence that Victor Frankenstein dishonored the role of female nature.
In Mary Shelley s novel, nature plays a vital role in the development of the plot. Nature is considered
a female part because Mother Nature is the collective personification of life. Nature is life bearing and
nurturing, as females are to their offspring. In spite of nature being feminine, Victor

Viruses Are Parasites Using Its Host s Cells
Viruses are parasites using its host s cells to replicate its own genome (Freeman, 2011). Viruses have
either a deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) or ribonucleic acid (RNA) genome that affects its specific
named genome. Types of RNA viruses include positive strand, negative strand, double strand and
RNA transcriptase. RNA viruses have evolved into effective pathogens that mutate at high rates. This
allows them an advantage over their host to effectively evade the immune system through several
mechanisms, such as mimicry, avoiding cell lysis, and phagocytosis. Their ability to bypass a cell s
normal process of proof reading and error correction is what makes RNA viruses such effective
pathogens. Almost all RNA viruses are termed emerging infectious diseases because they are already
known, but are increasing rapidly in new areas. There are a few emerging infectious RNA viruses that
have reappeared into the population and have the potential to cause an epidemic.
Ebola hemorrhagic disease, rabies, influenza and HIV are examples of RNA viruses and a few of these
viruses have yet to be thoroughly researched. An example of an RNA virus that mutates and evolves at
a high rate is the influenza virus. The influenza virus can mutate in two different ways; antigenic shift
which is an abrupt change and by antigenic drift which is a smaller, more gradual change that occurs
through point mutations (Uyeki 2014). These changes are what help the virus to evade the host s
immune system. Another

Ethos, Logos, Pathos, and Malcolm X
Aristotle contends that persuasive speech is composed of three elements: ethos, logos, and pathos. In
debate, we use these to construct our arguments. The first principle, ethos, can be expressed as a
claim. The claim is the core of the argument; everything else goes to support it. I will commence this
essay with the following claim:
Malcolm X is not his own man. He is merely a mirror, an empty shell with a loud voice who echoes
time and again the views of his mentors. This is why his beliefs change so often throughout his life:
when his father, Shorty, and Elijah Muhammad respectively take him under their wings, they wipe the

Analysis Of Jealous Husband Returns In Form Of A Parrot
The Psyche of a Jealous Husband, a Mad Wife and a Disillusioned Man
This paper provides an insightful look into the psychological unraveling of the mind that can take
place in certain moments of people s lives, in particular the lives of a jealous husband and a mentally
tormented woman. The three stories, the Jealous Husband Returns in Form of a Parrot by Robert Olen
Butler, the Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, and The Tell Tale Heart by Edgar Allen
Poe, contain a variety of symbols that give insight into the human psyche and further show how
various elements can relate to or foreshadow mental imbalances. Additionally, the stories respective

The symbol to rightly mention first is the obvious sickly, yellow wallpaper itself which adequately
represented the wife s confused and shaky state of mind, as well as the obsession that would soon

externalize the darkness within her, and she later added that, I can see a strange, provoking, formless
sort of figure that seems to skulk about behind that silly and conspicuous front design (242).
Interestingly, from a psychological point of view, the figure seemed to be a reflection of the
protagonist s pain of being a woman stuck in a marriage that did not satisfy her anymore. Additional
symbols that played a role in the story were the colonial mansion (238), and the great immovable bed

actually hints to the true dwelling place of the protagonist, a mental asylum. Throughout this story, the

Taking a Look at Ulysses S. Grant
Ulysses S. Grant Ulysses S. Grant, the eighteenth president of the United States, was a man of many
notions. Grant endured a long journey from horseman to general. This journey continued all the way
to President of the Unites States. From being born in a small white cottage, all the way to piecing
together the Union, Grant has done it all. In the sixty three years that Grant was alive, he made many
positive impacts and shaped our country for the better. Born Ulysses Hiram Grant, on April 27, 1822,
Grant was the son of Jesse Root Grant and Hannah Simpson (Ulysses S. Grant). Soon after Ulysses
turned of age, with the help of local congressman, his father enrolled him into the West Point Military
Academy (Williams, Jean Kinney). Grant had to abandon his life of tannery and horsemanship, and

Techniques With Language, The Cut Up Method And Permutation
Brion Gysin created two techniques with language, the cut up method and permutation. The cut up
method involves cutting up a page into four sections, rearrange said sections and then read the
product. The rearrangement of the sections in opposing places extracts new meaning to the text, an
outlook that could not be generated from a logical standpoint. A new found sense of surrealism is
discovered in something already familiar to us.
Surrealist artists of the era were advocating for an art of the unconscious mind. It is by my affirmation
that Brion Gysin s intention behind creating The Cut Up Method was to show language could be used
like a tool to extract new meaning, depending on an individual s subconscious.
Brion Gysin
A dialogue often breaks out. It speaks.
The means are our machines. These prime agents of the ex plosive force, Nova, are factors of
geometric progression to the Count Down and we better catch up on their methods, but quick.
Cut Ups are Machine Age knife magic, revealing Pandora s box to be the downright nasty Stone Age
gimmick it is. Cut through what you are reading. Cut this page now. But copies after all, we are in
Proliferation, too to do cut ups and fold ins until we can deliver the Reality Machine in commercially
reasonable quantities

Sales and Carbon Dioxide Essay examples
Dracca became aware that one of its competitors, TrendBaby, Inc., was soliciting information from
one of Dracca s employees, Bob Shumaster. Shumaster was apparently detailing product assembly
information that was unique to Dracca and explaining to TrendBaby how this assembly strategy saved
Dracca thousands of dollars each month. Dracca discovered that TrendBaby actually hired Shumaster
to provide this information, and that Shumaster was using Dracca company computers to relay the
proprietary information to TrendBaby via email.
Meanwhile, Sally May, a sales representative for Dracca ran into her neighbor who is a sales

Compare And Contrast The Fashion And Style Of The 1960s
Fashion and Style during the 1960s consisted of very bipolar moods. The early 1960s resembled that
of the late 1950s with the ideas of conservative and restraining clothing. Later in the 1960s women s
clothing specifically began to change more than ever before. They began to show more skin that ever,
with bright colors and mini skirts made a dramatic debut. The styles of women in the 1960s embodied
the growing women s movement of individuality and sexuality that continued to grow well into the
70s. The little black dress was soon a staple piece in every woman s closet that was paired with a pair
of gloves. Men and women began to involve the hip hugger jean with low beats into daily attire.

Status Of Women In Victorian England Essay
We certainly can t pick our families, though I am sure many of us have had thoughts of what life
would be like if we were born into a different lifestyle. While your ascribed status is the status you
were born into, your achieved status is what you achieve during your life. Oftentimes people will let
their circumstances dictate what they become, but those striving to attain a higher status will usually
find a way to change their circumstances if possible. One great example would be of women in
Victorian England. Women during this era were given no legal status whatsoever. Typically women
born within a higher class would have a better chance of marriage and lifestyle. They would still have
no rights, but may live in comfort. Women born

Margaret Sanger Birth Control Movement
Margaret Sanger s Contributions to Nursing Through her Birth Control Movement Margaret Louise
Sanger, a nurse in the early mid 1900s, was the first to promote and spread information regarding birth
control. She was passionate about women having the right to their decision of bearing children. She
also wanted women to be educated about the risks involved and informed about methods of birth
control. Sanger did not have many male supporters; however, she used her perseverance to her
advantage and continued to advocate her ideas to the public. Eventually, her thoughts and ideas made
headway to magazines and newspapers, allowing the information to become public knowledge for any
woman wanting to understand more about birth control. She not only wrote magazines and articles,
she also opened several clinics and performed procedures on women wanting medical assistance that
was denied by many doctors. Sanger s stance on birth control lead to various outbreaks and conflicts;
however, her accomplishments overpowered her obstacles, and birth control is now a decision for
women across the world (Knowles, 2009; Margaret, 2001; Margaret, 2017; Topics, 2015; Wardell,
1980). Biography Margaret Louise Sanger, a women s activist who initiated the U.S. birth control
movement, was born in Corning, New York on September 14, 1879 (Margaret, 2001). She married an
architect, William Sanger, and they had three children, one of whom died from pneumonia at five
years old. She grew up with ten

Effects Of Poe s Single Effect On The Black Cat
Edgar Allen Poe has many standards that helped lay the ground work to his single effect of a short
story. He thought short stories ought to be able to be read at one sitting. This allows the reader to get
the entire effect of the story at one time, rather than having to stop reading the story and having to
recapture the feeling of the story after returning. In writing, he attempted to try to and capture a
unifying emotion; the emotion of horror. He felt that the effect of the story should be obvious to
everyone who reads the story. Poe s single effect was attended to show human behavior; to see how
human reactions would be if these stories actually occurred.

The storyteller begins the story by stating from an early age he has had an obsession with animals. Poe
states, This peculiarity of character grew with my growth, and, in my manhood, I derived from it one
of my principal sources of pleasure. (Poe) This statement is evidence of the insanity the narrator
experienced at a very young age. He goes on to explain that he and his wife have many domesticated
animals, including Pluto, a large beautiful black cat. He describes the mutual fondness between him
and the cat. This relationship between him and the cat, is strange. For years they have a growing
friendship, until he started drinking alcohol in excess. The narrator goes on to explain how one night
after getting completely intoxicated, the cat panicked and bit him. This causes the author to become
angry and in a psychotic fit of rage, he takes a knife and cuts out one of the cat s eyes. After this
encounter, the cat fears him, and tries to avoid him at all cost. In the beginning, the storyteller is
regretful and feels remorseful for the cruelty. But soon we see the narrator s insanity expressed when
Poe states, But this feeling soon gave place

Professional Tips for Buying a Home at an Auction
Buying a home is one of the most stressful times in your life. After all, a house is probably the biggest
investment you will make in your lifetime. Buying a home at an auction comes with more stress
because the stakes are higher and going to house auctions are out of the comfort zone for most people.
However, you don t have to go into the process feeling like you re out of your comfort zone, or
beyond your depth. The following will discuss the tips that experts use at house auctions so you can
feel comfortable and confident and handle it like the pros.
The Best Strategies for Buying Homes at Auction

Check out the auction clearing rates in the region where you plan to buy a home at an auction.
Part of knowing the market means knowing the true value of the houses and properties in a given state
or suburb. It s simple enough to do this research. You can look at what s sold and for how much online
in most cases, but getting to know local real estate agents gives you a bigger advantage in that respect.
Make your bid clearly known
When you are making your bid on the house, say it loudly and state the full amount you wish to offer
every time you make a bid on the house. This reinforces the amount you want to pay for yourself, the
auctioneer, and for the other bidders and establishes confidence in your bid. It s important to make
your intentions clear to everyone there.
Once bidders know you are a serious bidder, some will be knocked out of the competition because
they are bargain hunters who don t want to pay more than they have to pay for a house. These auction
attendees are often knocked out relatively early in the process. You ll see them leave when the bids
start going up.
Make the first bid or not
Some people think that making the first bid is taboo. Many experts will tell you not to make the first
bid at a house auction, but that shouldn t be a concern. You may as well be the first bidder.
Professional auctioneers, like Graeme Hennessy say that there is a better chance that you ll stay

Today s Central Intelligence Agency (CIA)
Executive Summary
CIA Central Intelligence Agency
Today s Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) is centered on the same basic principles as the Office of
Strategic Services (OSS) in the 1940 s but with some significant changes, specifically in its
organization and methods. The OSS, the world s first global intelligence organization, was organized
and overseen by Wild Bill Donovan and expanded at an unprecedented pace throughout World War II.
The OSS was the foundation for today s CIA. It was because of the successes and failures of the OSS
that the CIA has been able to grow and develop.
As is made clear by the detailed descriptions of Bill Donovan s routine and procedures in the
biography Wild Bill Donovan by Douglas Waller, the leadership and management of the CIA today is
drastically different from the original OSS. Donovan was appointed by FDR, in the same way the
Director of the Central Intelligence Agency is today. Yet Donovan s duties were extremely vague and
up to interpretation, including performing unspecified supplementary activities for the president.
While the overall mission of the CIA today is open ended which means it needs only the approval of
the National Security Council to embark on new, possibly unprecedented missions, the functions of

source of America s information during the Cold War with the Soviet Union. The CIA received
$46million from then President Eisenhower (1955) to build they headquarters in Langley, Virginia. In
1961 the CIA helped support the invasion of Cuba by providing the Cuban exiles with weapons and
training. During the Cold War the CIA played the biggest role in counter espionage ever, but once the

Odysseus Gaining Wisdom In Homer s Odyssey Daniel Lam Mrs. Kravchak Honors Humanities September 10, 2015 Bittersweet Wisdom Confucius once said, By three methods we may learn wisdom: First, by reflection, which is noblest; second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third by experience, which is the bitterest. Confucius explains three ways to acquire wisdom : by reflection, imitation, and experience. This quote can be connected to Homer s, The Odyssey, where Odysseus uses his experience to gain wisdom. In the beginning of The Odyssey, Odysseus, a champion and king, is called to adventure. Odysseus must embark on a new journey in order to return to Ithaca and retake his throne. Odysseus does not tell his men many things and he keeps those secrets to himself. In one example of the Odyssey, Odysseus is given a gift from the god of the winds, Aiolos. The gift, a bag of winds, takes all the stormy winds and conceals them inside a cowskin bag. Odysseus crew, curious about what is in the bag, decides to open the bag and check what is inside. Thinking that there is gold and silver inside, they greedily open it emanating a windy gale. Odysseus describes the opening of the bag saying, A scandalous motion, but it was passed. They opened the bag, the winds leaped out; at once a gale caught them, and carried them off to sea tearing their hair as they left their native land behind. (Homer 113). A very scandalous motion indeed for the island of Ithaca was visible to Odysseus and his me. Odysseus is punished for his poor leadership. And ads are reaching children through new media technologies and even in schools with corporate sponsored educational materials and product placements in students textbooks. To explain this problematic issue the media entities have come up with some questions like; What do consumers need? Is it a real or false need? Can we come up with a common and definitive set of universal human needs? What is it that consumers really need? Is it perhaps in order to stay alive? These questions can lead to different answers that in essence come down to particular human behaviors. (Colin Campbell 282). One example of human behavior with regards to the food we eat is that most of the world s population eats more that they really need to maintain proper nutrition and healthy lives. Another is shown in the types of vehicles we drive. Is it really necessary to drive a huge 4 wheel drive, fuel inefficient SUV around the city or on a commute to work? Furthermore, is it really necessary to have 50 pairs of shoes? In order to specify some one s needs it is essential to have a comprehensive knowledge of that person s background and ambitions and their needs and desires. The media is creating desires that we confuse with needs. (Colin Campbell 280 283). The most effective ads are ones that we don t even recognize as advertisements. Like ads we see in television series, news, movies and even on clothing. Animals play a significant role in our existence, they involve in food chain and help in the sustainability of bio diversity. Unfortunately they entered the scientific field through the experiments of new drugs. The utilization of creatures in exploratory investigations in the UK can be followed back at any rate similarly as the seventeenth Century with Harvey s analyses on various creature species intending to show blood flow. Crosswise over Europe, the utilization of creatures in experimental examination started to grow over the nineteenth Century, to some degree upheld by the improvement of analgesics which had already made creature research incomprehensible. In 1876, parliament passed the Cruelty to Animals Act, the principal enactment went for directing creature tests. Over the late nineteenth and the twentieth hundreds of years, the extension of restorative science implied that the quantities of creatures utilized as a part of examination extended relentlessly, quickened by the Medicines Act, 1968, which gave a clearer manual for the utilization of creatures in wellbeing testing in the wake of the Thalidomide catastrophe. • 6. Islamic Legal Reformers Of The Twentieth Century I. Introduction As Talal Asad has noted, religion is by no means disappearing in the modern world, and, [i]f anything is agreed upon, it is that a straightforward narrative of progress from the religious to the secular is no longer acceptable. (Asad: 2003: 1.) At the same time, and in relation particularly to the contemporary rise of Islam, [t]he question of secularism has emerged as an object of academic argument and of practical dispute. (Ibid.) The common view is that Islam and secular modernism constitute a duality, forever at odds, while others argue that the religious and the secular are a false duality and are indeed mutually constitutive of each other. (Agrama: 2). Viewed either way, the resurgence of Islam gives rise to important questions regarding its relationship to the secular modern state. In this short paper, I propose to engage with the works of two Islamic legal reformers of the twentieth century: Mohammed Abduh s classic Theology of Unity , first published in 1897, and Ahmad Safwat s lesser known article, The Theory of Mohammedan Law, published in a British law journal in 1920. Though quite different, both works are emblematic of this period in Islamic history when traditional Islamic law struggled to identify its proper role with respect to the increasing power and transcendence of the modern secular state. Moreover, each work is representative of two views of Islam and secular modernism and represent the genesis of both ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Mona Lisa One of my most favorite paintings in the history of Western art must be the Mona Lisa. This sixteenth century oil painting is one of the world s most famous paintings. It was painted by the famous Italian painter, architect, sculpture, draftsman, and engineer Leonardo da Vinci. It is well known that the Mona Lisa painting is portrayed as the most visited, viewed, written, and sung about painting in the world. This portrait took Leonardo da Vinci about three to four years to complete. Mona Lisa is said to be one of his favorite art work; therefore, he took his time painting and finishing it. The Mona Lisa represents a composition with an immense value. The subject of the painting itself is mysterious; therefore, the fascination and interest in da Vinci s work attracted millions across the world. This caused a huge interest in the audience because the Mona Lisa has no identity. Everyone is curious and inquisitive to know who this beautiful woman is. Until this day, no one really knows the real identity of Mona Lisa. In addition, the smile on the face of the woman in the painting caused mixed thoughts. • 8. The, Wildlife, And The Natural Land, By Henry David Thoreau Just years after the Industrial Revolution, a time at which engineering and the economy became the main concerns of the population, many of the American people forgot the importance of the land that provided the resources that sustained them. In a time where there was believed to be nowhere but society to reside in, few refuted the idea that the wilderness was really so uncivilized. In his 1845 memoir, Henry David Thoreau describes his experiences living in a quaint cabin, in the wilderness , alongside Walden Pond near Concord, Massachusetts. Presenting his findings of being self reliable, Thoreau depicts what his life was like alone in the woods with only nature to ease one s mind and solitude to provide company. With detailed ... He accordingly conveys this idea by stating that society only believes in intrinsic value and only once one can seclude themselves from the portrait of society can one come to find instrumental value. Continuing with his descriptions of the Walden Pond during winter, Thoreau presents the idea of overconsumption and sustainability throughout the book. While observing the ice cutters at Walden Pond, Thoreau comments on human effort to exploit nature, arguing that the actions are in vain as nature regenerates much faster than it can be threatened, which is very debatable due to the knowledge that there is only a finite amount of resources on the planet. Thoreau thoroughly believes in his idea of self reliance and states that there are only four necessities that should determine one s ability to survive: food, shelter, clothing, and fuel, many of which he believes nature provides graciously. This refutes the idea that prosperity is dependent widescale economic surplus. • 9. Canned vs. Homemade Spaghetti Sauce: Price Looking at price alone, it s actually an easy call. At Winco Foods, I bought 26.5 ounce can of Del Monte Mushroom Spaghetti Sauce for 78 cents. At most stores, in fact, I can find canned spaghetti sauce for one dollar or less per can. For comparison purposes, I also purchased one 14 ounce can and one 8 ounce can of tomato sauce, and one four ounce can of mushrooms (stems and pieces). This came to over a dollar and that doesn t even include the onions, herbs and spices that I already had at home. In terms of price alone, the canned spaghetti sauce is obviously the better buy. But for me, there s more to it than that. Canned vs. Homemade Spaghetti Sauce: Taste and appearance Do my family and I actually prefer the canned sauce or the homemade sauce? Based on taste and appearance, I would favor the homemade sauce. The canned sauce is overly sweet, and the mushrooms in the mushroom sauce are nearly invisible they must be finely minced (probably leftover bits from something else). Homemade sauce has tasty chunks and pieces of mushrooms, and I control the herbs and spices, adjusting them to my family s taste. Canned vs. Homemade ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I will be exploring how the same details can be interpreted in different ways, depending on the viewer s background, attitude, perspective, and so on. Dogville is the city drawn in chalk; the city with a 3 hour psychedelia; the city that reflects the ugliness of human nature. The surface is often deceptive. The whole town is a convention. The furniture could be pink, there could be cacti in the Elm Street, and the town could be located not in the mountains but on a sunny beach. Von Trier has never treated the scenery with respect. Von Trier has made everything to make the viewers feel different while watching his movie with its artificial decorations, British accent of the voiceover and formalism in acting and dialogues. On the one hand, Dogville is nothing but an attempt to show a realistic American image. Presenting Dogville in Cannes, von Trier said, this is America, but seen from my point of view and that it is not a historical or scientific, but emotional movie. The first instance of digital imaging came with the invention of the camera. The type in the poster is actually a quote from the character and is formed in a way to shape the characters stance from an iconic moment for him. The development of this poster involved using a previously created illustration of the character and mixing it with typography. The original image was placed into the Adobe Illustrator software as it provided a lot of tools for type. The text was then written out and reshaped to form the body of the character. The typeface was selected carefully as it was meant to match the minimalistic style of the previous illustration, therefore the typeface was sans serif. After this part of the development was complete, the image was moved into Photoshop where the colour from the image would be given to the text. A few basic finishing touches were given by adding blocks of colour near certain letters to help bring the shape of the character out. Street lighting was rare, roads were unpaved, and water supplies were really inadequate. The water surrounding NYC was tidal and mostly saltwater. They had no direct access to fresh water. Initially, Residents depended on wells or rain water cisterns for their water needs. External wastes contaminated the water aquifers. Rain water did not help increase the main supply. Flush toilets were introduced to the city in 1819 that increased the need for water usage. (Weidner, 1974, p. 55) The establishment of city water supply was regarded as a private, residential matter rather than a public function in the early 19th Century (Blake, 1956). The State depended on privately owned companies to supply water for its residents rather than undertaking the responsibilities themselves. The Manhattan Water Company was chartered in 1799. They had the sole rights to supply water to the city. They had a reservoir built in the city to provide over 400 of NYC most elite ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 25. Wal Mart As A Symbol Of The United States Overview: Sam Walton founded Wal Mart in 1962 in Roger, Arkansas. In a little less than 10 years, Wal Mart had 38 locations and was opening two stores per year. In 1970, the company started trading in the New York Stock Exchange. By 1979, the company announced a record $1billion sales and it became the first company to do so. Wal Mart reached record after record during those years, and by the end of 1989, Wal Mart reported after tax profits of $1billlion. Wal Mart now has become a symbol of the United States, and it is the biggest employer in the world with approximately 2.2 million workers with operations in 27 different countries. Wal Mart s revenue is gargantuan; they were ranked number one by Fortune Magazine in 2001, with a revenue of $219.8bn. At this point, Wal Mart sales are around $1billlion per day. The incredible rise of Wal Mart from a little store in Arkansas to one of the biggest companies todayis astonishing; however, it has not come without its problems. During the early 1980 s, employees tried to unionize in one of the distribution centers in Arkansas. Walton told the workers that if they unionize, he would remove the employees profit sharing plan and replace them with other employees. Another scandal Wal Mart faced was in its Made in America campaign, during which most of the clothes sold in Wal Mart were manufactured in sweatshops in developing countries. The video The Age of Wal Mart, which aired in 2004, presented many ethical issues ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 26. Role Of Female Nature In Frankenstein In the novel Frankenstein, the author Mary Shelley reinforced the role of female nature in a book that is predominantly male oriented. The female character is an underlying feature throughout the whole novel. For example, when Victor Frankenstein created his Monster from dead body parts, he disregarded the laws of female reproduction. Both Anne K. Mellor and Jonathon Bate argue that Victor defiled the feminine nature when he created his Monster from unnatural means. Mellor argued in her essay, Possessing Nature: The Female in Frankenstein, that Victor eliminated the necessity to have females at all (355). There will not be a need for females if new beings are created in a laboratory. The disruption of mother nature is one of the novel s original sins (479). In Bate s essay, Frankenstein and the State of Nature, he argued that Victor Frankenstein broke the balance between female principles of maternity and mother nature (477). Frankenstein broke nature and undermined the role of females. The argument of Mellor was more persuasive than the discussion of Bate because she was able to provide more evidence that Victor Frankenstein dishonored the role of female nature. In Mary Shelley s novel, nature plays a vital role in the development of the plot. Nature is considered a female part because Mother Nature is the collective personification of life. Nature is life bearing and nurturing, as females are to their offspring. In spite of nature being feminine, Victor ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 29. Viruses Are Parasites Using Its Host s Cells Viruses are parasites using its host s cells to replicate its own genome (Freeman, 2011). Viruses have either a deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) or ribonucleic acid (RNA) genome that affects its specific named genome. Types of RNA viruses include positive strand, negative strand, double strand and RNA transcriptase. RNA viruses have evolved into effective pathogens that mutate at high rates. This allows them an advantage over their host to effectively evade the immune system through several mechanisms, such as mimicry, avoiding cell lysis, and phagocytosis. Their ability to bypass a cell s normal process of proof reading and error correction is what makes RNA viruses such effective pathogens. Almost all RNA viruses are termed emerging infectious diseases because they are already known, but are increasing rapidly in new areas. There are a few emerging infectious RNA viruses that have reappeared into the population and have the potential to cause an epidemic. Ebola hemorrhagic disease, rabies, influenza and HIV are examples of RNA viruses and a few of these viruses have yet to be thoroughly researched. An example of an RNA virus that mutates and evolves at a high rate is the influenza virus. The influenza virus can mutate in two different ways; antigenic shift which is an abrupt change and by antigenic drift which is a smaller, more gradual change that occurs through point mutations (Uyeki 2014). These changes are what help the virus to evade the host s immune system. Another ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In debate, we use these to construct our arguments. The first principle, ethos, can be expressed as a claim. The claim is the core of the argument; everything else goes to support it. I will commence this essay with the following claim: Malcolm X is not his own man. He is merely a mirror, an empty shell with a loud voice who echoes time and again the views of his mentors. He thought short stories ought to be able to be read at one sitting. This allows the reader to get the entire effect of the story at one time, rather than having to stop reading the story and having to recapture the feeling of the story after returning. In writing, he attempted to try to and capture a unifying emotion; the emotion of horror. He felt that the effect of the story should be obvious to everyone who reads the story. Poe s single effect was attended to show human behavior; to see how human reactions would be if these stories actually occurred. Poe s single effect in The Black Cat depicts insanity. The OSS, the world s first global intelligence organization, was organized and overseen by Wild Bill Donovan and expanded at an unprecedented pace throughout World War II. The OSS was the foundation for today s CIA. It was because of the successes and failures of the OSS that the CIA has been able to grow and develop.
