2. Introduction
• Garbage - All the unwanted, unused, and useless waste materials
and other household waste produced on a daily basis are termed as
garbage.
• The garbage in garbage out process constitutes the creation of
wastes by various work to the dumping of waste on the landfills for its
decomposition.
• As citizens of a society we have a responsibility to manage our waste
sustainably.
• We can do this following the SEVEN R’s of waste management

4. Sources of Garbage
• The different sources of garbage include:
• Domestic waste such as sewage and kitchen waste.
• Agricultural waste such as husk, fibres, straw.
• Industrial waste such as dye, coal, paper, ashes.
• Electronic waste such as wires, broken computers,
batteries and obsolete electronic gadgets.
• Community waste such as waste from shops, offices.
• Bio-Medical wastes such as waste from hospitals.
5. Classification of Garbage
• The garbage is classified into two types –
Biodegradable wastes
• Any organic matter, which can be decomposed into a simpler substance with
the help of microbes is called as the biodegradable wastes.
• Biodegradable waste can be converted into compost. They are eco –friendly
and includes all the organic wastes from plants sources, agricultural wastes,
etc.
Non-biodegradable wastes
• The wastes that cannot be decomposed and create pollution in our
environment are termed as the non-biodegradable wastes.
13. The method of converting
biodegradable waste into compost by
the activity of redworms is known as
vermicomposting

18. Recycling Of Paper
• We should always write on both sides of paper sheets.
• Unused pages from old notebooks can be torn off and made
into a new notebook for doing rough work and other
miscellaneous work.
• We can also reuse envelopes and covers by using stickers to
write new addresses.
• We can also make fresh paper from old newspapers.

22. Plastics – Boon Or A Curse?
• The plastic problem is mounting day by day. A huge amount of plastic is
thrown away carelessly on the street and in water bodies and such
irresponsible disposal of plastic can cause a number of problems:
• Animals and birds alike, in search of food, end up consuming some
amounts of plastic due to which many of them end up choking on these.
• Although plastic bags seem convenient to store food items, consuming
these are very harmful to our health.
• It gets worse when dirty and thrown away plastic bags are reused upon
mere dusting and washing them which is also very harmful.
• Upon burning or heating, plastics give rise to toxic and dangerous fumes
and gases, which can potentially cause cancer in humans.
• Careless disposal of plastic on the roads also ends up choking the sewer
and drainage systems.

24. Management of Garbage• The process of collection, removal, processing and proper disposal of waste is known as waste
management.
• By following the 7 R’s we can save energy, trees, and other natural resources and protect the
environment.

26. Impact of proper disposal and management of
garbage
• This not only helps to reduce the waste that we produce but also
becomes a valuable addition to the soil and helps in the
nourishment of crops and plants.
• Eco-friendly value added products developed from biodegradable
wastes
• It creates health and wealth
• Reduce the global warming and emission of green house gases.
• We can reduce the land, air and water pollution.
