WASTEWATER
STORY
Water :- the clear liquid that falls as rain and is
in rivers, seas and lakes is called water
What is
wastewater?
rich in lather , mixed with oil ,
black brown water that goes down
the drains from sinks , showers ,
toilets , laundries is dirty . This is
called wastewater.
Sources of water
Natural sources of fresh water
include surface water, under river
flow, groundwater and frozen
water. Artificial sources of fresh
water can include treated
wastewater (reclaimed water)
and desalinated seawater.
Usage of water Water is used for drinking,
bathing, cooking food and
washing dishes, clothes,
fruits, vegetables and
brushing teeth.Uses of
water include
agricultural, industrial,
household, recreational
and
environmental activities.
The marketing mix is a business tool used in marketing and by marketers.

Why is water our lifeline?
Water is the basic necessity for the functioning of all life forms that exist
on earth. It is safe to say that water is the reason behind earth being the
only planet to support life. This universal solvent is one of the major
resources we have on this planet. It is impossible for life to function
without water. Plant and animal could not live without water. Water
ensures food security, maintain organic life, industrial production and to
conserve the environment. video :-

DO YOU KNOW ?
Who discovered the water? It was the chemist Henry Cavendish (1731 –
1810), who discovered the composition of water when he experimented
with hydrogen and oxygen and mixed these elements together to create
an explosion (oxyhydrogen effect).

Clean water that is fit for use is unfortunately not available to all. It has been
reported that more than one billion of people have no access to safe drinking
water. This accounts for a large number of water-related diseases and even
deaths. People even children walk for several kilometres to collect clean water
about the increasing scarcity of fresh-water due to population growth, pollution,
industrial development, mismanagement and other factors.
Realising the urgency of the situation on the World Water Day, on 22 March
2005, the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) proclaimed the period
2005–2015 as the International Decade for action on “Water for life”. All efforts
made during this decade aim to reduce by half the number of people who do not
have access to safe drinking water. There has been perceptible progress in the
direction of the aim but still there is a lot to achieve.

Cleaning of water is a process of removing pollutants before it enters a
water body or is reused. This process of wastewater treatment is
commonly known as “Sewage Treatment”. It takes place in several
stages.
What is Sewage ?
Sewage is wastewater released by homes industries,
hospitals, offices and other users. it also includes
rainwater. sewage is a liquid waste. Most of it is water
which contains dissolved and suspended impurity.
How can sewage affect our health? Sewage and
wastewater contain bacteria, fungi, parasites, and
viruses that can cause lung, and other infections.
Bacteria may cause diarrhea, fever, cramps, and
sometimes vomiting, headache, weakness, or loss of
appetite.

ACITVITY (18.2)
Locate an open drain near your home, school or on the roadside and
inspect water flowing through it. We know that sewage is a complex
mixture containing suspended solids, organic and inorganic impurities,
nutrients, saprophytes and disease causing bacteria and other
microbes. These include the following :-
Organic impurities –Human faeces, animal waste, oil, urea
(urine),pesticides, herbicides, fruit and vegetable waste, etc.
Inorganic impurities–Nitrates, Phosphates, metals.
Nutrients –Phosphorus and Nitrogen.
Bacteria –Such as vibriocholera and salmonella paratyphi which causes
typhoid.
Other microbes –Such as protozones which cause dysentery

PROPERTIES OF WATER
Properties of water:
Water is a colourless, tasteless, and transparent liquid.
Boiling point of pure water is 100°C.
Pure water freezes at 0°C.
The state of water changes on heating or cooling.
Water is neither acidic nor basic.
68.7% of the fresh water on Earth is trapped in glaciers.
30% of fresh water is in the ground.
1.7% of the world’s water is frozen and therefore unusable.
Approximately 400 billion gallons of water are used in the
United States per day.
Nearly one-half of the water used by Americans is used for
thermoelectric power generation.

Tables to comparedata
In one year, the average American residence uses over 100,000 gallons (indoors
and outdoors).
Water can dissolve more substances than any other liquid including sulfuric acid.
The freezing point of water lowers as the amount of salt dissolved at increases.
With average levels of salt, seawater freezes at -2 °C (28.4 °F).
About 6,800 gallons of water is required to grow a day’s food for a family of four.
Water covers about 71% of the earth's surface.
Water weighs about 8 pounds a gallon.
There is the same amount of water on Earth as
there was when the Earth was formed.

Water freshen up
In a home or a public building generally one set of pipes brings
clean water and another set of pipes takes away wastewater.
Imagine that we could see through the ground. We would see a
network of big and small pipes, called sewers, forming the
sewerage.
It is like a transport system that carries sewage from the point
of being produced to the point of disposal, i.e. treatment plant.
Man holes are located at every 50 m to 60 m in the sewerage,
at the junction of two or more sewers and at points where
there is a change in direction.

It has been reported that more than one billion of people have no access to safe drinking water. This accounts for a large number of water-related diseases and even deaths. People even children walk for several kilometres to collect clean water about the increasing scarcity of fresh-water due to population growth, pollution, industrial development, mismanagement and other factors. Realising the urgency of the situation on the World Water Day, on 22 March 2005, the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) proclaimed the period 2005–2015 as the International Decade for action on “Water for life”. All efforts made during this decade aim to reduce by half the number of people who do not have access to safe drinking water. There has been perceptible progress in the direction of the aim but still there is a lot to achieve.

Imagine that we could see through the ground. We would see a network of big and small pipes, called sewers, forming the sewerage. It is like a transport system that carries sewage from the point of being produced to the point of disposal, i.e. treatment plant. Man holes are located at every 50 m to 60 m in the sewerage, at the junction of two or more sewers and at points where there is a change in direction.
