Hereditary spherocytosis is a type of hemolytic anemia caused by red blood cell membrane defects that result in spherical red blood cells that are vulnerable to destruction in the spleen. The most common membrane defect is spectrin deficiency, but defects in ankyrin, band 3, and protein 4.2 can also cause the condition. Clinical manifestations include anemia, splenomegaly, and jaundice. Treatment options include splenectomy or partial splenectomy to relieve symptoms by removing the major site of red blood cell destruction. Sickle cell anemia is a genetic blood disorder caused by a mutation that results in abnormal hemoglobin S, which can polymerize and distort red blood cells into a sickle shape
