My Analysis
Supporting Images
Cinematography
and Camera
Techniques
There was a lot of cinematography used in the film pulp
fiction. There was a lot of use of the two shot with also use
of the establishing shot technique. For example In this
supporting image we see the two main protagonists in the
shot, setting up the scene for the film. We can obviously
see this scene is set in what looks like an American dinner,
with the man and the woman is the main characters in the
shot. Since in this scene there is a lot of talking, not much
use of cinematography needs to be used. The director
doesn’t want to overdo it and make it impossible to watch.
This scene does also include the just a generic close up to
show the emotion of the waitress’s face as alongside the
main characters face to show the emotion plus reaction of
the characters face as you may not see in a medium or a
two shot. Also with a close up you get to see more detail to
the characters face unlike you would in any other shot and
it is used to signify that the person is a main character. Also
included in the scene is a tracking shot as it moves from the
female character towards the male character as it stays
focused on the male character at all times. Mainly used in
scenes with a bigger area like a field, being used here lets
us see the male protagonist in a much wider field of view,
which may be helpful if something was being blocked from
one side but visible on the other side. Lastly is the over the
shoulder shot which is common to cut between these shots
during a conversation, alternating the view between the
different speakers.

Visual Effects &
Colour Scheme
The look of the scene looks like it is set in 1960’s America
but since the film never specifies we would never know, it
may just be a themed restaurant to make the audience
think that it’s set in a earlier year. The colour scheme
though is colourful and simple. There is a lot of light in this
scene that looks like it comes outside due to the sunny
weather. This suggests that it is warm as both of the
characters are wearing thin clothing as to thick clothing.
Also in the scene you can see it is set during the morning as
it is quite dull outside and that the restaurant isn’t busy,
what also is on the table backs up this as they are eating
breakfast.
Genre
Conventions
Since the film genre is based around a crime thriller, you
are most common to see a weapon; most films in this
genre tend to include a weapon of some sort to try and
support the crime and keeps the plan to continue as they
want, and another point to prove this is the ending bit of
the scene is the start of a robbery, They discus about where
the best and worst places are to rob and why they are. So
this scene is heavy on crime and shows us that the rest of
the film would be based around the crime theme.
Narrative
During this scene, the protagonists talk about robberies
and crimes that they have committed and that overs have
committed. Though this is the beginning of the film, it gives
the viewer an idea of what the scene is going to be like
throughout the movie and Since this scene is a heavy
dialogued scene it is going to give us key details to the plot
and the story. One key aspect to this is where he mentions
about not wanting to continue what he does but carries on
anyway; this shows us that he is not a man of his word and
that he cannot be trusted, you can’t pick out what the
other people in the restaurant are saying so it makes us
focus on these two characters.

Editing
Techniques
Since this scenes is heavily on dialogue it has the technique
of eye line matching, These two characters never really
stop looking at each other, only when the get distracted,
and here the director does not break the 180 degree rule,
so it doesn’t make the scene look disorientated. When the
waitress comes the technique of cutaway, the reason they
have done so they can emphasise the specific action of the
waitress and it works in conjunction for the characters. This
is all done with continuity editing, where the entire scene is
all cut and patched together so it makes it run smooth and
professional.
