Iron Man
Name:
My Analysis
Supporting Images
Cinematography &
Camera
Techniques
The camera techniques used in the iron man opening scene
includes a establishing shot. This is used to set up the scene
and to show us where the beginning and the main theme of
the movie is going to take place. You don’t see much besides
the few military vehicles so it shows us the viewer that it is
going to be an action themed movie. A few seconds in and the
shot turns into a pan shot, this is to symbolise that the trucks
are indeed moving, it also to keep the vehicles in the back as
they move along so it the camera keeps stays at the same
angle as they drive along. You could also say it is used as a
point of view as the antagonists observe them, as they attack
from the hills. Then next comes a crane shot as it looks at the
main protagonists vehicle as it drives, the reason it focuses on
this car is to symbolise which is the main vehicle out of the
rest or the audience would never know, though it is a crane
shot, it fades with a track as it follows the car along the road.
You can tell it is a crane shot as it is filmed steadily at a high
height and the lowers down and looks down at around a 80
degree angle, using a crane on an angle would give you a
better view of the shot than if it was just a track because if it
was a track all you’d get the side view but with the crane you
get the full experience. Within the car there are quite a few
point of view shots, this could have been used due to the low
space in the car or maybe because it was a conversation
would be able to see from their point of view the emotions
and feelings of a point of view, which makes the shot effective
as it captures their emotions, it also shows the audience how
that character is reacting. Also while in the car, the type of
shot called a two shot is used with the protagonist and one of

the soldiers, this is used effectively as it does not break the
180 degree rule and it always keeps the characters in view, it
is used to show both of the characters faces and their
reactions and because it is a picture it adds a bit of humour
into the shot. The last shot to be used is a zoom shot and this
is used to zoom into a missile that lands next to stark, and as
its made by him it’s used to emphasise that is made by him
and that his own weapon could murder him, and it is also used
to show the seriousness of this.
Visual Effects &
Colour Scheme
The visual theme throughout the scene is bright but colourless
with the exception of the protagonist’s clothing which stands
out compared to everything else. In the scene there is plenty
of lighting as it is set in a desert as there is rarely any objects
to create shade and as it is in the desert, there wouldn’t be
many clouds so that allow for maximum lighting. The lighting
would be good for an action move of this kind as it allows for
everything to be seen perfectly and not have anything shaded
out. The visual effects shown here would be the explosions in
the background from missiles being shot by the antagonists,
mainly military themed due to the scenario of the scene.
Genre
Conventions
The genre of this scene is action as it set during a battle
between the American soldiers and the terrorists, this is the
main element in the scene and also the main thing to focus
on. There are other elements to focus on as well such as the
humour which is in the car. Marvels films are never fully just
action, they also include humour to keep their audience
entertained and laughing. Though for this scene there isn’t
really much going on besides the conversation going on in the
vehicle and the battle that takes place outside of the vehicle.
Narrative There are two themes of narrative in this scene, the first one

being about the personal life of tony stark (Protagonist), this
just takes us and the characters of the scene away from the
scenario they are in, it is a clever way for the characters to get
side-tracked and forget what they are doing. The second part
is about military talk where all the soldiers are speaking
military commands and signalling their team what to do and
where to go.
Editing Techniques
One main editing technique in this scene is shown a lot in the
car is the 180 degree rule, the director never breaks this. This
may be due to the limited space in the car. Continuity editing
is also used in this as it makes the scene look like one
continues shot, directors use this to make their scenes look
professional and not sloppy.
Title Credit Design
The credits in this scene are very minimalistic but they do
stand out in the background. There is also a style to the text
where it outline of the text gives it a somewhat 3D effect.
