The document provides analysis of four short films - Mistletoe, Love Sick, Love of Mine, and analysis of elements used in each:
- Mistletoe uses dialogue, diegetic office sounds, and non-diegetic music. Camera pans and focus pulls between subjects.
- Love Sick uses voiceover, music, and sound effects. Camera zooms out from a close-up and includes shaky handheld shots.
- Love of Mine uses only non-diegetic music. Features close-ups, fades between scenes, and reveals information in the final newspaper headline.
- Elements of each like lighting, camera angles, editing, and mise-en-scene help tell each
3. Mistletoe
• Sound – Mostly dialogue is used – small talk, which shows that the guy has an interest in the girl.
Diegetic sounds made to show where the scene is set such as phone ringing and somebody typing
on the keyboard. Non-diegetic music being played as it changes to next scene and fades into the
background.
• Editing – Camera pans up from the bottom the Christmas tree to the girl sat at her desk. It then
focus pulls as the tree is in focus and the background is all blurred, as it gets to the girl it then
switches to focus on the girl and blur the rest of the background.
• Camera - It does quick switches from person to another to show they’re having a conversation.
Mostly mid shots are done throughout the film as it shows where they are, how their body posture
is and it shows that the people are having a conversation.
• Mise-en-scene – Christmas decorations to show the time set of when it has been took placed. Low
key lighting; dark room lit up by small lights as this shows that it is set at night time. Smart clothing
to show that the scene is based in an office and also of props such as computers, telephones, desks
etc.

4. Love Sick
• Sound – In the opening scene there is non diegetic music being played. A voice over of the male
actor is used throughout the short film. The voice over is used to show what the character is
thinking in his head. There is music being played in the background but in a quiet pitch. Sound
effects used to go with the things that are happening in the scene such as the car sharp breaking.
• Editing – Zooms out from the actress face which is showing her facial expression to a mid shot to
sow where the scene is set. As it zooms out the actress is in focus and the background is blurred
and then everything in the scene comes into focus. The camera is shaky which means it is hand
held to show that it is following the actor running. Slow transition as the camera switches to a
different position.
• Camera – Close-up to show the actress’ facial expression. Long/wide shot to show where they are.
The camera switches from one actor to another, this shows that the man is looking at the woman
and it shows where the woman is looking. It also cut edits from one scene to another. Birds eye
view to show where the man is running and where he is.
• Mise-en-scene – High key lighting as it is all set outside so the lighting is from the sky and sun. It’s
set outside in the park for the first scene and then the rest of the film is set in the city centre.
Casual clothing to show it is just a daily day out. Bike to show how much he was in a rush that he
would use anything to get him to the girl.

5. Love of Mine
• Sound – No dialogue used throughout the short film, it only has non-diegetic sound which is a track played
over the film which was used throughout. The track is a peaceful kind of music and it is played at the same
pitch until mid way where it gets louder which gives more of a dramatic vibe towards the audience.
• Editing – Most of the editing which is used is mostly handheld and they also commonly use cut shots to
go from one scene to another scene. They’ve used fading to fade out from one scene to a white screen
and then fades onto another scene. They have used this as it fits in well with the story of the film.
• Camera – There are mostly close-ups camera angles that are used throughout this short film as its showing
the expression and emotions of the actresses face to show the audience how she feels. There is also
long/wide shots used to show where they are and their surroundings. It also uses P.O.V angles as this
would show the audience what the other person is seeing and it also is like close-up angles as it showing
the expression of that persons face.
• Mise-en-scene – Some of the lighting is high key as it mostly based outside and the sun is out giving most
of the lighting. In some scenes it is low key as it is when they are in bed together which shows its night
time. Casual summer clothes worn by both actors in this which are t-shirts, vest tops and shorts. One prop
that had was important was the newspaper as it is the last scene of the short film and it shows the
audience the front page headline which explains the whole story of the short film to them.

7. Orphan
Here it tells you the release
date of this film. This is
there so that when the
audience look at the poster
they would know when the
film would be coming out.
In each of the corners there
are small logos that shows the
two production company's.
This is put on there so the
audience would know and if
they tend to like watching
films that from theses
production company’s they
would maybe go and see this
film.
The film title is placed near the bottom
this is so that it is still noticeable but
the main focus is on the model. The
film title is the biggest text on the
poster, this is so that the audience
know that this is the film title. The text
is almost childlike as its quite uneven
although it looks as if has been
scratched in giving an effect of
something mysterious.
The image of the model takes up
majority of the poster as it is a mid
shot. There is a shadow effect behind
the model this focuses more on the
model as it gives the effect of
something mysterious. This is because
the image is originally dark but it looks
as if the is a light shining down on her.
The model is dressed in a dress and she
also has her hair in pig tails tied with
ribbons which shows the audience she
is a little girl.
Having this tagline on top of the poster
will attract the audiences attention.
The text is in with and in bold, block
letters, this is so that the text stands
out from the masthead and also having
the text in white makes it stand out
from the black background. When the
audience read this text they will think
here is something wrong with the little
girl as it says ‘there’s something wrong
with Esther’ and as the lighting effect
on the poster is dark and gloomy it
would make the audience want to
watch the film to see what the mystery
is .
There is another tag line under the
masthead, however this one is in red
and a smaller text. This is because the
red will contrast from the white film
title and having the smaller text
wouldn’t take the attention away from
the masthead.
8. The Wolf of Wall Street
The film title is placed at the top of the poster
in the the centre. The text is large and black,
however it is surrounded by a yellow box
making the text standout from everything else
on the poster. Also just above in a smaller
size it tells the audience the director of the
film so it is clear to them and so it catches
their eyes.
The shot of the actor in the film is a mid/wide
shot as as it shows above the hips of the actor
however, it shows more people in the
background. The actor is placed in the middle
of the poster, this is so that the audience
know that he will be that main actor within
the film. Also the actor has the main focus in
the poster as everything else in the poster is
slightly blurred, which makes the audience
notice the main actor more.
The text ‘Leonardo DiCaprio’ tells
the audience that this is the name
of the actor in the film. This is
because from image of the actor
the audience would easily
recognize who it is , therefore
having just that once actors name
on the poster the audience would
instantly know that he would be in
the film and that he would have a
main role within the film. The text
is placed just above the masthead,
in yellow capital letters. This is so
that when the audience read the
film title their eyes would go
straight to the name.
From looking at the rest of the
film poster it looks as if everyone
in the background is
celebrating/having a party and as
the actor is dressed smartly and
smirking it is telling the audience
that he has done something big
which is worth celebrating.
9. Black Swan
The camera angle of this image is a close-up as it
shows from her shoulders upwards. The image is
central and it takes up most of the poster, this is so
that the main focus is on just the image.
The film title is placed at the bottom and is
positioned in the centre. It is in a fine font
making it not the main focus of the image. It
is in a small size and is in black, this is so that
it stands out from the rest of the poster as
the black stands out from the white making
it noticeable for the audience.
The background colour of this image
is white. This is so that everything on
top of it would stand out more to the
audience and make them notice the
poster more.
The rest of the text on the image is in a
much finer and smaller size this is so that
it is still noticeable to the audience
however, it doesn't take the attention
away from the masthead or the image of
the model.
11. Spider-Man 2
There is the verdict part at the bottom, here the editor writes his
conclusion on the film, along with a star rating, which in this case was the
full five stars. This gives the reader time to think whether the film is worth
a watch or not.
The film title of the film is
positioned at the top of the
article. This is so that the
audience know which film
is being revived. The
masthead is in a bold, block
font and this is because it is
clear and easy to read.
The image shows you a
lot about the film, it
shows the main
character, what Spider
man actually is and
what genre the film
will be, which is clearly
an action. So for
someone who has
never seen spider man
before they would be
able to take a lot away
from the picture alone.
There is also a short
outline of what
happens in this film so
the readers can find
out what the story is
before they go and see
it for themselves, this
means if they find the
outline interesting
then they will be more
likely to go and see
them film to find out
what its like.
Putting ‘film of the
month’ tells the reader
that this is a must
watch film as it has
been voted one of the
best films that has
been released of that
month.
12. Pirates Of The Caribbean:
At World’s EndThe header is placed
at the top of the
double page spread
and is in a big, bold
font and in capital
letters. This is so
that hen he reader
flicks through the
magazine the
header would stand
out to the most as it
would automatically
catch the readers
eye.
The film title is in a
much smaller font
but still bold, this is
so that the reader
know what film is
being reviewed and
what they’re reading
about.
Just underneath the
film title there is the
star rating , to let
the reader have an
ide of how good the
film may be.
The body text is written the three main
columns. The text is mixed with bold and
normal fonts so it is eye catching to the
audience and they also include pull quotes.
The image takes up
one half of the
double page
spread and it is
screen shot from
the actual film.
From this screen
shot it shows he
audience who
some of the main
characters are in
the film.
Here are some
smaller imagers
which are on top
of the main
image. These
images have
nothing to do
with this specific
review which is
why they are
small so it doesn’t
take attention
away for the rest
of the review.
13. The CaveThe image takes up most of one half of the double page
spread. This is so that the readers will know who the main
character is of the film and if the reader are a fan of films
which the have previously been in then they would go see
this film.
The film title is in a bigger and bolder
font than the rest of the text on the
double page spread. This is so that it
is clear to the reader that this is the
name of the film which is being
reviewed.
The star systems
is placed above
the article this is
so that the reader
will have a rough
idea of the films
quality.
This is a small
paragraph explaining
to the reader who the
actors are in it, who
directed the film and
the running time. this
is so that the readers
would be familiarised
about the actors in it.
This last paragraph sums up the review
on what the writer’s opinions are of
this film.
A small tagline
placed under
the masthead
