Prion diseases or transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) are a family of
rare progressive neurodegenerative disorders that affect both humans and animals.
They are distinguished by long incubation periods, characteristic spongiform changes
associated with neuronal loss, and a failure to induce inflammatory response. The
proteinaceous infectious particles, prionwas identified by an American neurologist
Stanley B. Prusiner and colleagues in 1982derived from the words proteinand
infection (Stanley B. Prusiner Autobiography). Prions are known to Creutzfeldt

Moreover, different anti PrP antibodies or their antigen binding fragments that disrupt
the PrP AОІ interaction were able to block the AОІ mediated disruption of synaptic
plasticity. These findings were deemed exciting because they suggest the involvement
of PrPC in Alzheimer s disease (AD) pathogenesis. However, others found that the
absence of PrPC did not prevent deficits in hippocampal dependent behavioral tests
upon intracerebral AОІ injection (Krull Nunnally, 2004).
PrPSc is identified as a surrogate marker and potential TSE agent. PrPSc formation
was first detected in the murine neuroblastoma cell line N2a when exposed to
mouse adapted scrapie (Abbott, 2010).Subsequent infection experiments
demonstrated susceptibility of N2a cells to several different mouse adapted scrapie
strains. Since then, several cell lines of neuronal and non neuronal origin have been
identified to be susceptible to a stable infection with prions. Once prions have
successfully infected a cell line, they can replicate persistently over multiple cell
passages, with very few exceptions, without any overt cytopathic effect (Shorter J,
Lindquist S (June 2005). Cell lines that have been successfully infected include
microglial cells as well as epithelial cells, fibroblasts and myoblasts, which have all
been demonstrated to persistently replicate an array of prion strains in vitro.

6. Character Analysis Of Hialmar Hedvig
This play Wild duck by Henrick Ibsen revolves around hialmar ekdal and how his life
specficly comes to a halt in act 4 and spins down the drain. The basic character
traits hialmar posses is that thinks of himself as he has integrity. He also feels that
he is the sole provider for his family consisting of his daughter (Hedvig), his beloved
wife (Gina) and his father (old Ekdal).
Hialmar Ekdal is also known for being melodramatic as he leaves the house after
finding out about the affair between his wife and Mr. Hakon Werle. He also found
his sanity by being around the garret where the wild duck resided while seeking
inspiration for his invention so his father can redeem his lost status or respect.
Gregers wrongly contemplating that he would be helping Hialmar, shares the bitter
truth he had uncovered about his father and Gina leaving Hialmar in a spiral of chaos
which he left the house to collect his thoughts.

In The Ballad of Chocolate Mabbie, Brooks uses a lemon hued lynx to describe the
young girl who is now escorting Mabbie s crush. Early on in the poem, Brooks
describes Mabbie as coming from a piece of chocolate, symbolizing a sweet girl
that is a treat for others to behold. Whereas she uses the preface lemon hued to
describe the new girlfriend. This is not only for the paleness of her skin, but the
bitterness at which she beholds. Chocolate is often used a warm and comforting
color, in contrast, yellow is brash and they are bitter on the inside. Likewise, In
Sadie and Maud, an animal is used as a symbol, however, the thin brown mouse is
set to describe Maud, the woman who is without love. Again the color of brown is
used here to say that she has the capability to be warm and loving, however, that skill
has been unnourished and she is timid and afraid of contact with others. Although
symbolism is used in contrast as we describe both the protagonist and the antagonist,
the fates of loneliness for both women are the
9. City Warming And Its Effects
Edgar Chaidez

City Warming Over the last decades, the Earth s human population has been growing
exponentially and now lies above 7 billion people. With such an immense number of
humans roaming around the Earth, throughout time, urbanization will occur
expanding the size of many cities. As a rural area expands so does the amount of
asphalt and concrete buildings within the city. This is how an urban heat island
occurs. An urban heat island poses many serious threats as it raises the temperature
significantly at night and can cause many fatal health risks during the day. Although
urban heat islands seem drastic, there remains ways that could potentially reduce the
effects. Minimizing the effect of the urban heat island can be accomplished by
increasing the amount of vegetation, which includes trees and natural grass, around
new parks and recreational facilities. An urban heat island is normally classified as a
metropolitan area that is warmer than its environment and the amount of concrete and
asphalt a city has greatly contributes to the problem (WTTU). A big city usually
contains vast amounts of roads, buildings and asphalt which are materials that absorb
heat from the Sun during the day, according to ASU Professor Dr. Brazel. At night,
the same constructs will release this heat into the atmosphere generating a
significantly warmer environment. At a smaller scale, such as a park or recreational
facility, this heat inducing process

Weddings, A rite of passage
A rite of passage is a public ceremony that marks, recognizes, celebrates or is
believed to actually cause a change in a person and her or his status, usually brought
about or related to increasing age (Peoples, Bailey). Almost every culture has rituals
that signal a change in life. Marriage is one of the most common rites of passage in
any culture. Weddings and marriage ceremonies are clear transitions from
adolescence to adulthood. Some form of marriage is known to have existed in all
human societies. Its traditional function in most of these societies has been to
stabilize sexual relations and to unite a man and a woman in order to provide care
for the young. In addition, marriage has linked and allowed for economic
exchanges between different kin groups and has served as the primary coming of
age ritual for women (Nelson). In America we are known for throwing lavish
ceremonies and expensive parties to celebrate the union between two people. I ve
attended quite a few weddings and participated in one during my lifetime thus far.
Most weddings in the American culture follow the same itinerary.
Before a wedding ceremony is thought of or takes place the couple preparing for
marriage usually separate from their families and begin to make a home together.
During the separation phase from each of his or her families an engagement occurs. A
typical engagement consists of the man

Historical Perspective
The history of France can be divided to Gaul and Roman Conquest, the middle
ages, modern time and contemporary era. The oldest traces of human life in what is
now France date from approximately 1.8 million years ago. Between 1500 and 500
B.C. The Guals moved into the region before it was known as France. Gaul was
conquered by Rome in the second century B.C., which led to the Gauls adopting the
Roman language and culture. France derived its modern name from Franks a
Germanic tribes that overran the country from the east around 5th century. (A Brief
History of France I)
In the 9th century, the Treaty of Verdun divided the Kingdom of Francia to three
territories; Eastern Francia, Middle Francia and Western Francia which was the
precursor to modern France. Before the monarchy was overthrown during the
French revolution in 1798, France was ruled with several noble families and was
involved with the hundred years war against England, Renaissance, reformation
and seven years war along with Austria against Prussia and England. (A Brief History
of France.II) About 10 years after the revolution in 1804 Pope Pius VII crowned
Napoleon Bonaparte as emperor of the France. (Table 1) Although he waged several
wars and occupied the most of Europe allied armies conquered Paris and exile
Napoleon to the island of Elba. However, he escaped from the island and tried to get

Aemilia Lanyer s only book of poetry published in 1611 Salve Deus Rex Judeorum
marked Lanyer as a historically important literary figure. At age 42 she became the
first English woman to declare herself as a poet. Due to this, a lot of scholarship
published about her tends to lean toward feminism. From here feminist criticism
branches off into several categories: 16th century women writers, female
relationships, patronage, women s rights, discussions of property and home. Another
category that Lanyer incorporated into her writingwas linking or comparing her
female patrons to sacred figures. Lanyer is well known for writing for her main

This category of scholarship dedicated to examining this characteristic of her writing
is interesting and just a unique as the technique itself. Micheline White s article, A
Woman with Saint Peter s Keys? : Aemilia Lanyer s Salve Deus Rex Judaeorum
(1611) and the Priestly Gifts of Women discusses this theme in Lanyer s only book
of poetry. White examines Lanyer s praise of her female patrons, her essentially
writing them as involved figures in the Passion, as well as other sacred images
and events. Another article titled, Aemilia Lanyer and the Virgin s Swoon:
Theology and Iconography in Salve Deus Rex Judaeorum by Gary Kuchar also
remarks on Lanyer s depiction of certain biblical events with women being
dominant participants. He also relates these depictions back to Lanyer s patrons
and how they influenced and informed her writing. Karin McKie in her article
Through a Glass, Brightly: The Magic of the Mirror Metaphor in Aemilia Lanyer s
Salve Deus Rex Judaeorum discusses this idea as well, and compares it to the mirror
metaphor where Lanyer writes to include more women, like herself, and dissimilar to
herself, in religious settings. Mckie mentions that Lanyer did this to in way redefine
how women participate in religious events, and religious

histories of both osteopathic medicine and allopathic medicine. Osteopathic
medicine is a different form that focuses on the whole body. It was developed by
Andrew Taylor Still, MD, in 1874 who made importance of treating illnesses as a
holistic view of the body. After being a surgeon in the Civil War, he approached a
new way to medicine to study the human body and find possible ways to better treat
illnesses. His research throughout his career and clinical notes show that
musculoskeletal system was an important role in overall health. He believed the body
contained all the elements needed to maintain health if it is properly stimulated by
external and internal applications. Through this idea he created manual techniques
that are synonymous with D.O. physicians today, osteopathic manipulative medicine

most important medical services are spaying and neutering.

reality is actually quite dreary.

Spayed females will not go into heat, so they won t be howling during breeding

Beyond behavior, spaying and neutering has also been shown to reduce the likelihood
of certain infections and cancers.
What it Means to Spay Neuter Your Pets
Simply put, spaying and neutering are surgeries meant to prevent reproduction.
Spaying involves removing the ovaries and uterus of a female animal, while
neutering means to remove the testicles of a male.

dressing decently. After they leave the store, Sammy tells Leagel that he is quitting

these two examples, it proves that everybody s luck begins to run out because the
girls leaves the store unpleasantly and Sammy loses his job. However, the tone of
Sammy s telling the story is informal and it does not match the events due to his

he is not likely to follow Sammy s action because he needs to support his family.
This shows Stokesie is more mature than Sammy because he understands what
responsibilities he has. Apart from describing the male employees, Sammy thinks
the young female customers who wear bathing suits know what they want and they

The donation of mitochondrial is extremely important because 1 in 200 children in
the UK are born with the condition that can lead to disability and death and there is
no cure currently (Mitochondrial donation, 2014).
In the UK there is a shortage of donated gametes even though gamete donation is in
demand (Murray et al,2000) especially within the ethnic minority groups (Purewal et
al, 2005). More often gamete donation is more common within the men population
than it is for the women. This may be down to the simple fact that the technology and
methods for gamete donation for women are more intrusive and lengthy in
comparison to that of a man s. Some oocyte donor express positive attributions about
their donation experience (Jordan et al,2004) whilst others attribute some negative
perceptions mainly about the techniques used and that were involved (Jordan et
al,2004).
Using assisted reproductive technology has an emotional effect on the surrogate, it
could cause emotional distress on the surrogate when it comes to handing the baby
over (Kennell et al,2002). Prior to this this stage there would have been a biological
bond between the surrogate and the foetus during her pregnancy, pregnant women
produce a hormone known as the oxytocin hormone which helps prepare the
surrogate to have a natural maternal instinct. (FazliKhalaf et al , 2008)
20. Love Not Legalism By Madeleine L Engle
Love Not Legalism
Madeleine L Engle was a fierce thought provoking writer. She challenged me as
both a believer and a writer. Her scatterbrained writing style was relatable to me
and so were the things she talked about. She would have been a wonderful wise
woman to grab a meal with. She did not shy away from controversial topics; but
instead, she introduced them. In Walking on Water L Engle sought to share the
freedom available to us if we allow Jesus Christ to break us free from our chains.
One of the topics that L Engle humbly addressed was the topic of legalism. I
greatly appreciated this because I find that many world renowned leaders shy away
from talking about it, when in reality it may be one of the enemy s most disguised
tools. When people see God as an unapproachable killjoy, it becomes natural to
grow distant from Him, and I know that before becoming a Christian this was the
biggest stumbling block for me and I know some of the most kindhearted people
cannot grasp the fact that God loves them and that He sent His one and only son to
save them. L Engle also tackled the major misconception that God does not know
how to laugh. He created humor and is pretty humorous himself. George
MacDonald said, It is the Heart that is not yet sure of its God that is afraid to laugh
in His presence (131). I am learning that more and more every day. The common
trait that my most joyful friends share is confidence in God s love for them. A
relationship with God has so
21. Danger And Cleanup Of Orbital Debris
Danger And Cleanup Of Orbital Debris Orbital debris, which are different than
space debri, pose a threat to space missions and astronauts. Manny previous
missions have left orbital debris in their wake. Most of the debris are left up there
until they are pulled toward earth by gravity and then destroyed by earth s
atmosphere. Until then the space junk is left to orbit around the earth. The amount
of debri continues to grow quicker than the earth can destroy it. Leaving the debri
to sit up there unchecked poses dangers for astronauts and space missions both
current and future. There are several solutions that scientists have come up with
that could help reduce the danger of space debris. Orbital debris are specifically
the man made objects that follow a path of orbit around the earth (NASA, 2013).
Orbital debris differ from satellites in that they no longer serve a working purpose,
making them essentially space junk (NASA, 2013). Orbital debris can sometimes be
confused with space debris. The term space debris encompases anyting that is
wandering about space or orbiting around something like the sun, manmade or not
(NASA, 2013). Things like meteorites and man made objects that are not in orbit
around earth (NASA, 2013). While orbital debris only includes man made, unusefull
things, that are in orbit around the earth (NASA, 2013). The orbital space junk can
wind up floating around the earth in a couple of different ways. One of the most
common ways that it can get up there
22. The Life of Aristotle, the Greek Philosopher
Aristotle (384 322 B.C.) was a Greek Philosopher from the Socratic/Classical period
in Athens, Greece. Socrates developed a system of critical reasoning in order to
determine how to live properly and tell the difference between right and wrong.
Aristotle was one of his followers along with Plato and they made a commitment to
the truth, and organized and systematized most of the problems of philosophy. He is
one of the most important figures in Western Philosophy and was the first person to
create a comprehensive system of philosophy.
Aristotle was born to an aristocratic family in Stagira. His father was the personal
physician to King Amyntas of Macedon. Aristotle was trained and educated as a
member of the aristocracy. At age 10, Aristotle s father died (which meant that he
could not follow his father s profession as a doctor anymore) and his mother also
died young, so, he was taken under the care of a man named Proxenus. At age 18, he
moved to Athens to complete his education at Plato s famous Academy. Aristotle
remained there for nearly twenty years, first as a student and then as a teacher, until
after Plato s death in 347 B.C.. He left the academy because he wasn t chosen to be
head of the academy since his ideas diverged far from Plato s. In 335 B.C., Aristotle
established his own school outside the walls of Athens, known as the Lyceum, in
competition with Plato s Academy. The Lyceum had a broader curriculum than the
Academy, and a stronger emphasis on natural

24. Criminal Justice Levels
The criminal justice system is comprised of three different levels consisting of local,
state, and federal. Each of these levels is responsible for operating the criminal
justice system at their respective levels. In a combined total of all three stages of
criminal justice, Police Protection, Judicial Services, and Corrections, the federal
level incurs the least amount of costs for their level of the criminal justicesystem with
the local governments share representing the highest costs. The state level resides in
between the local and federal branches in the amount they incur to operate the system
at their level (Bohm Haley, 2011, p. 19). The local government funds 70% of the
Police Protection budget with the Federal government paying 19% of it, leaving the
state to fund the remaining 11% of the Police Protection portion of the criminal
justice system. In the Judicial portion of the system, the local government again pays

Do the three different levels of government have a choice in the matter? The amount
expended on the criminal justice system is going to be directly proportional to the
amount of crime occurring. Also, if the local government were to choose to provide
less police protection, then there is a high likelihood that the crime rate would
increase resulting in more expenditures occurring in the Judicial and Corrections
stages so overall there would not be a decrease in overall expenditures. If more
money were spent on local police protection, it might have an impact on reducing
the crime rate, but most municipalities are operating at full capacity within a system
that is funded by taxes which no one wants to see increased. The best overall plan
would include an increase in spending in all three branches because it takes a
combination of all three to make up our criminal justice
25. We Real Cool Analysis
Poetry is comprised of many forms and within each form, poets have created; stanzas,
rhythm, images, symbolism, meter and meanings. Readers must read each poem and
begin inductive reasoning to understand what is written. In using this reasoning, only
then can the poem be explained. There are many different types of forms and a
ballad is one of these poetic forms. It is usually made up of a basic construction of
quatrain stanzas. The lines contain rhyme, and generally tell a story that can be
compared to a song. In analyzing, Peter and John by Elinor Wylie, We Real Cool by
Gwendolyn Brooks, Riverbanks Blues by Sterling A. Brown and The Cherry tree

the water as it moves. Each stanza grows more musical as the poem goes on, like the
start of a trip in a ferry on a river slow to start then smooth as it goes down.
Then there is the poem, The Cherry tree Carol, author unknown. This poem s story
retells the Christmas Journey to Bethlehem from Luke 2:4 5 through the death of
Jesus (Leith). This ballad uses the typical quatrain stanza to create this story. Each
stanza takes us through the walk of Christ, from birth to death using only Mary and
Joseph s names in each stanza. Then Mary took her Babe/And sat him on her knee,
/ Saying, My dear Son, tell me/ What this world will be. (Strand and Boland 78). The
quatrain stanzas help to summarize specific moments in the life of Jesus Christ

In approaching a topic such as adaptations, one has to first understand what exactly
adaptation means and how it is applied to such works to get the product the adapter
is trying to create and for what reasons they are adapting for. The American
Heritage Dictionary defines Adaptation as the following: 1(a). The act for process
of adapting. 1(b). The state of being adapted. 2. A composition recast into a new
form: The play is an adaptation of a short novel. 3. An alteration or adjustment by
which a species or individual improves itscondition in relationship to its environment.

Woolf takes the reader on a psychological roller coaster with flashbacks to Mrs.
Dalloway s life, specifically her teen age to college years. She shows us all of the
decisions Dalloway had to make and how those decisions had shaped her life.
Clarissa Dalloway had chosen a life that would be safe for her, by marrying well
and having a child, by living the proper political life. Throughout the novel,
Clarissa thinks back onto how she could have had a life of sexual freedom and
excitement with Richard, her ex lover from her college years. Of course this is all
put into play by the arrival of him from India, because she hadn t seen him in a
very long time. All of these occurrences and flashbacks just add to Clarissa s
growing depression that she barely is able to hold onto in the story. The most
interesting and most significant aspect of Mrs. Dalloway is that it takes place in
one day, which is what Cunningham and Daldry built their book and movie off of.
The idea of telling a story of a woman s thoughts in one day is an amazing one
because it is so intrinsic and specific that going past one day would take forever to
divulge and digest. One of the most important parts of Mrs. Dalloway is the
relationship between Septimus and Clarissa. Woolf uses Septimus, a war veteran
who s got shell shock, as the alternate persona to Clarissa. I like to think that
Septimus was the brain and

28. Cochlear Implantation
Cochlear Implantation is not as new of an idea as society may think. Interest in
stimulating hearing in deaf individuals can be traced back as far as the 18th century.
Since then many scientists, doctors and even audiologists from all areas of the world
have worked to develop sophisticated high tech implant systems. Which has resulted
in varying viewpoints between the Deaf and Hearing Communities.
In the 18th century Italian Physicist Alessando Volta developed the electrolytic cell.
Volta experimented with electric current, becoming the first to stimulate the auditory
system electrically. In which he attached two metal rods to a battery of
approximately 50V and inserted one rod in each ear. When the circuit was completed,

A cochlear implant does not restore normal hearing, but can give a deaf person a
useful representation of sounds in the environment and in some help with
understanding speech. The Cochlear implant consists of external components that
usually are behind the ear and internal components that are surgically implanted
under the skin these two parts work together to allow the user to perceive sound.
The external components include a microphone, a speech processor, and a
transmitter. The microphone is located at the top of the speech processor, which
resembles a behind the ear hearing aid. It picks up sounds from the environment and
transmits them to the speech processor. The speech processor can either look like
the behind the ear hearing aid or be a small box worn in a chest pocket. It is a
computer that analyzes, digitizes, and arranges the sound signals picked up by the
microphone and sends them to the transmitter. The transmitter is a small magnetic
disc or circle coil worn on the head just behind the ear it receives signals from the
speech processor and convert them into electric coded signals, sending them to the
receiver/ stimulator implanted just under the skin using a special radio frequency.
The internal components include the receiver/ stimulator and the electrode array. The
receiver/stimulator decodes the electrical signals from the transmitter and sends a
corresponding pattern of rapid, tiny electrical pulses to electrodes on the electrode
array that has been surgically inserted and winds through the cochlea. The electrical
pulses stimulate the fibers of the auditory nerve where the brain categorizes the
sounds and assigns meaning to them. The Cochlear Implant to
29. The Contradiction Of Opposing Regulation
The Contradiction of Opposing Regulation Under public interest theory, regulations
exist to protect consumers, to protect workers, and to protect the rights of the least
advantaged. They exist to hedge against the greed, corruption, and exploitation that
can occur in an unchecked capitalistic society. They attempt to prevent or ameliorate
detrimental consequences to individuals and communities. Granted, this can be seen
as an idealistic view of regulation. Exponents of public interest theory argue that
even well intentioned regulation can fail to achieve what it set out to do, and
politicians are imperfect and subject to pressure both by corporations and vocal
minorities (Koopman et al., 2014). Nonetheless, in the United States, these
democratically elected local and federal representatives have put regulations in
place that, unless given reason for doubt, are presumed to reflect the will of their
constituents. Therefore, rebelling against regulation is not simply renouncing the
government in some cases, it is renouncing the concerns of the communities that
these companies argue they are improving. Airbnb s $8 million snarky ad
campaign against a housing affordability bill in San Francisco was widely panned
as tone deaf. One of the many billboard ads suggested to the public library system
to use some of the $12 million in hotel taxes to keep the library open later (Toor,
2015). Tusk Ventures, a corporate consulting firm that serves as a regulatory broker,

Do we presume to place the blame solely on our presidents, or do we consider the fact
that the executive branch of government is much bigger than just the president, and
how does that affect the running of the government in totality; more so the continuity

Admittedly even though these efforts continued after Truman, some of these

31. The Pros And Cons Of The Industrial Revolution
There were beliefs that the industrial changes in Britain accumulated from a long
process of development. Agriculture also played a huge role in the start of the
Industrial Revolution and it turned out to be a positive aspect. At the time, farmers
were creating new ways and methods of farming. The productivity had improved
and suddenly there were plentiful crops being sold at a lower price. Farmers didn t
have to spend every dime they had in order to provide for their families.
Manufacturing was also a positive result of the Industrial Revolution. Since customers
were spending less money on agriculture, they were spending more on manufactured
goods.
The new technological advantages that created Britain s largest cotton textile mill led
to new productions and social relationships among customers. Therefore, people were
easily making the transitions to the new factory systems that were being provided.
James Hargreaves finally invented a cotton spinning machine and this was one of the
major breakthroughs in the cotton textile industry. It was simple and inexpensive.

he have the highest completion percentage per game, but he also owns the record
for most passing touchdowns in playoff history, surpassing all the greats before him.
Secondly, Tom has the ability to make others around him play great. The most

The Massachusetts Bay colony and Virginia had a sundry amount of differences as
well as similarities. Each of these colonies was founded upon different ways of
living. Digging deeper, there are many more differences about these colonies than
there are similarities. Although both colonies eventually experienced the help of the
natives, each colony set separate rules and laws for themselves. Virginiais more
geographically spread out and more focused on obtaining gold for personal profit,
whereas Massachusetts is more of a united, small farmed colony that focused more on
the efforts for religious freedom.
John Rolfe was an English settler who based the voyage to America simply on the
growth of tobacco. Rolfe s crew, along with many other young men, traveled to
Virginia in 1609 to search for gold. When the ship reached on the shore, all that
was seen was sandy beaches and swampy marshes. Neither of which helped with
the growth of the major cash crop. Even after the valiant attempts to scrounge for
gold, there was no success. With the large amount of crops that Virginia grew, the
colony needed to expand west into new land for more room to grow crops. At this
time Virginia was an underdeveloped colony that needed settlers to come live and
work. Virginia introduced the ever growing indentured servitude. Most of the
indentured servants were possibly single men of the lower class. The ship s list of

the Queen of Salsa, with more than thirty six albums, recorded with some other
leading singers in Latin music. Celia worked as a singer for more than forty years,
and during that time, she became well known for her vigorous work, great
personality, and her emotional way of singing. During her performances, she was

Celia might be compared with US jazz vocalist Sarah Vaughan in her ability to bring
vocal techniques to a primarily instrumental music, but she has a more essentially
popular appeal than any jazz singer. Seemingly indestructible vocally, Celia
continued a full schedule of concerts and recordings throughout the 1980s and
beyond. She received a Grammy award for the album Ritmo en el corazГіn, recorded
with conga player Ray Barretto, in 1990, as well as an honorary doctorate from Yale

Still a major star in her own right, Celia became an inspiration for numerous

In this film, we view the case of a child named Genie who was isolated as a child.
Genie was discovered on November 4th, 1970 at 13 years of age where she was
discovered to have been strapped to a potty chair and isolated from the world for
most of her life. Throughout the film we see the many researchers found an interest
in Genie and began to investigate if she would be able to acquire languagealthough
she had passed the critical period of language development. Although, these
researchers believed that they were helping Genie and she displayed significant
progress it was clear that Genie was not able to speak proper English. She was able

sentences. Genie went... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Every new place that Genie discovered was a new world for her, this raised her
curiosity and allowed her to want to engage and interact with her new
environment. As we know, as infants we are born with almost all the neurons that
we will have. In Genie s case, being strapped to a potter chair for most of her life
caused her to lose many of those synaptic connections that she was not able to use.
This process is referred to as pruning, which simply stated means use it or lose it,
when theses connections are not being used they disappear and deteriorate. The
ability of the infant s brain to change in form and function is referred to as
plasticity, this is important because although Genie was not taught as a child her
brain was still able to adapt and engage to her new environment. Through this we
encounter how Genie s brain was able to change throughout her new life and how
the brain has this amazing ability that allows reorganization and the ability to form
new connections. For Genie, these connections were able to form because she now
had the chance to explore her environment, which is something she was unable to
do her entire childhood. In the beginning of the film when Genie was discovered
they examined her brain waves and found that Genie was expressed abnormal wave
patterns. This is referred to as sleep spindles, which is an indication of retardation;
this raised the question of whether or not Genie was impaired at birth or due to
isolation. However, after working with her they found that she was in deed capable
of forming new synaptic connections that allowed her to learn new words and
supported the concept of brain
37. Nuclear Testing And The Cuban Missile Crisis
The development of nuclear weapons through out the cold war period, had led the
world to believe that a nuclear war was soon on its way. The evolution of nuclear
testing and the Cuban missile crisis indicated how far each state was ready to go to
ensure their ideological interests were pursued and at the same time their global
superpower status was retained. Such techniques depicted peace as simply an
expression with no significance. However, measures were established to guarantee
the acceleration of nuclear weapons was controlled and didn t get out of hand. The
marking of different arms treaties and limit arrangements demonstrated co
operation between the two superpowers, bringing about no immediate clash,
guaranteeing peace was kept and war was prevented. War would now be disastrous
for either side and therefore peace was necessary and possible (Kennedy pipe,
2007, p.122). As both powers possessed nuclear weapons and with pressures running
high, a move had to be made with the main goal being the preservation of peace. The
positions which the superpowers had arrived at by 1969 regarding nuclear capability
clearly demonstrated that each state was gaining strength in the field of arms. The
only way the nuclear weapons contest could be slowed down or bought to an end
would be through shared co operation. This came through the SALT, START and the
ABM settlements. The threat which nuclear weapons posed meant that world peace
was potentially at risk. In the event that

Law enforcement officers are authorized to use different forces based on its situation.
Officers face many circumstances during the period of their job when use of force is
necessary. For example, making arrests, restraining unruled combatants, and while
controlling disruptive situations. Incidents involving the use of excessive force by
the policefrequently receive media attentions, legislators and sometimes even
criminal courts. To serve better for a community or country a small percentage of
police interactions with citizens involve use of force to server better and protect
others from illegal or criminal minds. NIJ sponsored research explains that police
custody arrests (handcuffing) used less than 20 percent of 7,512 arrests. Even in
those cases police used weaponless techniques like grabbing or holding can be
view as minor types of force statistics on police us of force on citizens. The further
support by the research, it indicates that the incidents contain resistance by
suspects, their injuries resulting from the police use of force were typically
minor. As part of the police force trainings, officers are trained to use force
progressively along a continuum and policy requires that officers use the least
amount of force necessary to accomplish their goals. The use of force typically
occurs when police are trying to make an arrest and the suspect is resisting. And
when injuries occur because of the use of force, they are likely to be minor. This is

39. The Tripartite Secondary School System
Introduction To Social Policy (AC1, AC2, AC4.2) The tripartite secondary school
system was introduced to society following the 1944 Education Act, this act
divided schooling into primary and secondary levels whilst increasing the school
leaving age to 15. During the same year, however, the secondary level of schooling
was further divided into 3 categories grammar, technical and modern. Prior to this
act there was no segregation of schooling in place, known as elementary schooling.
Grammar schools were intended to schools based around academia, technical
schools were intended to be based around science and technical schooling and
modern schools were intended to be consistent with general schooling and
education. The secondary schools children attended was not down to individual
choice but rather an IQ test, the 11+ test. The 11+ test was founded by Cyril Burt
on the understanding that intelligence was inherited, there was proof into Burt s
theory and it was identified that girls IQ level was often higher. The test was fixed
to minimise the girls scores and allow only 20% to meet the requirements for the

40. Analyzing Friel s Short Story Translations
Where there is ambiguity, they ll be anglicized (Friel 277). The short story
Translations by Friel, was set in a rule town in Bail Beag Ireland. It portrayed the
progress of language and culture between the British and the Irish. About 700 years
after the Easter treaty of 1916. The nations were trying to merge together by
educating the lower class. Meaning Celtic speaking Irish people. They attempted to
tackle this language barrier between the people. Therefore, hedge schools were
placed in rural parts of the land, in order to teach English, Greek, and Latin. Along
with this new generation came new boundaries. Boundaries, that Maire and Yolland
accidentally tested with their love.

A spirit of acceptance, and of change. With this change came new experiences, and
cultural differences. Maire knew this all too well, for she had crossed a line. She
had allowed her heart to fall in love with an English soldier. Jimmy, gave in site to
the real meaning of the story; as he talked about his love for Athena the Greek god
of beauty. Jimmy said, Do you know the Greek word endogaemein? It means to
marry within the tribe . . . and the word exogamein? Means to marry outside the
tribe. And you don t cross those borders casually both sides get very angry. (Friel
308). It was too late though. Maire, and her British lover, Yolland, had already made
a scene by leaving the dance together. Although, Irelandwas beginning to evolve it
still was not completely accepted to have an Englishman taking up home in the
Irish country side. Aside from that, it was not acceptable to see a Englishman
running off with a favorable woman into the dark of night. After a night of
dancing, and mischief, Yolland went missing. I can only assume he was killed by
the Donnely twins. It may be understood that maybe Ireland had not come so far in
the past 700 years. Maire was right to say the sooner we learn English, the better.
Because now they could advance, and become more powerful. Powerful enough to
over come the bondage of cultural obstacles they were facing. I couldn t put it any

41. The United States Should Lower the Legal Drinking Age to...
The United States minimum legal drinking age (MLDA) of twenty one is almost a
perfect example of a policy with unrealistic expectations and serious unintended
consequences. The current policy that the United States has in effect criminalizes
youth who consume alcohol at less than twenty one years of age. Young adults are
going to drink under twenty one, so why shouldn t the United States lower the
MLDA to eighteen? Following Prohibition in 1933, many states made their MLDA
twenty one. During the 1960 s and 1970 s, many states lowered it to eighteen to
match the drafting age (Alcohol Policy MD). President Reagan passed The National
Minimum Drinking Age Actof 1984 which required all states to raise their minimum
purchase and public... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Others claim that the younger the MLDA is, the more likely young adults will
irresponsibly drink by drinking and driving or binge drinking, which is for men
having five or more alcoholic drinks in a row, and for women, it is four (Dying to
Drink xiii).
A person cannot possibily sway towards MLDA twenty one or MLDA eighteen
without reason I can only stress that the current MLDA of twenty one should be
lowered to eighteen years of age. First and foremost, the United States legal age of
adulthood is eighteen. A young adult of eighteen may do many other activities, but
cannot consume alcohol. Second, the subject of the Forbidden Fruit comes into light
over the subject. Lowering the current MLDA twenty one to eighteen would diminish
the thrill of breaking the law to obtain or consume alcohol. Additionally, lowering
MLDA twenty one to eighteen would reduce the number of underage people hurt
from alcohol related injuries or accidents due to the fear of legal consequences if they
sought medical attention. Finally, law enforcement is scarce when the subject of
underage drinking comes to play.
The United States legal age of adulthood is eighteen. A person may smoke cigarettes,
vote in elections, get married, play the lottery, and join the military. If a person can
make those decisions at eighteen, why not decisions on their own alcohol
consumption?
42. The Responsibility Of Dorm Directors
One of the number one priorities here at the college is to ensure that we are providing
our students with a safe and secure environment that is conducive for learning. At an
institution that provides Residence Halls for students, it is important to remember
that the safety measures extended to those residence halls also. According to
Sokolow (2004), there are three questions that a riskmanager has to address when
assessing risks, can the risk can be avoided, can the risk be transferred, or if the risk
can be accepted (p. 90). The purpose of this audit is to identify the policies and
practices that are in place that could potentially be a legal liability for the institution.
In order to conduct this risk assessment, we will utilize the three category
assessment: low risk bring searches, moderate risk of personal property, and high
risk of mental health awareness and violence (Sokolow, 2004, p. 88)
Searches
Part of the responsibility of Dorm Directors is to report any illegal activity that may
occur on the premises. A possible infraction may result in a dorm director or campus
police performing a search of the room. There have been numerous complaints from
students that there have been illegal searchers of their rooms. In some of these
instances, the students were not present, and those who were present stated that they
did not grant permission for officers to search. The issue with this is that in order for
searches to occur, we have to ensure that they are
43. Enlightened Despot Dbq Essay
Enlightened despots held a crucial role in determining the fate of their countries, as
well as the continuation of monarchies as a whole. Their advances towards making
their countries better through enlightenment thinking were what labeled them as
great monarchs. Their religious, social, political and economic changes were all
made to help their people grow as a whole. They used their absolute power to
change their policies in order to further their people in religious and economic ways.
As any enlightened despot would tell you, an enlightened ruler should remain
absolute. Being in complete control of one s country and governing body was
essential to being labeled as an absolute despot. Document 6 reads that in Russia, the

The first and most important issue was that of religion. Due to its history of
conflict, it was important for all religions to be tolerated and for all to have equal
rights. In Austria, Prussia and Russia, toleration of religious difference was
encouraged, leading to religion becoming a personal matter, and allowed them to
move onto more beneficial dealings (Document 1, 2, 12). Another large step
towards achieving equality for everyone was to remove the power that the church
and the aristocracy held. This was done by toleration of religion and idea that the
upper class was selfish and holding the people back from their potential of
advancement. As a result, both of these lost the large amount of influence that they
held over the people (Document 9). Equality was carried over to immigrants as
well. Anyone who settled in Russia were required to follow the same laws as
everyone else in the country. However, they were not required for perform extra civil
duties or pay extra taxes than the born citizens did with the requirement that they take
up agriculture or form a business to help the nation (Document 5). In Austria, Joseph
II believed that everyone should work to contribute to everyone s benefit, and not just
one s own (Document 11). In this way, equality led to furthered advancements in
economy as
44. Analysis Of The Lottery
Since reading The Lottery by Shirely Jackson, I ve been thinking more about culture,
traditions, and perspective. Not just that, but how it can sometimes take adopting an
unbiased, non judgmental, or outside perspective in order to see things for what
they really are. The way that the narrator in this story adopts such a position allows
for a clearer view of the events of the story.
In The Lottery, the narrator speaks to us in a non participant and objective manner.
We hear and see events unfold from an outside, fly on the wall , perspective. No
critique or judgement on the events is provided by the narrator; we only can
ascertain judgements and feelings from what the characters do and say. By allowing
us this viewpoint, we can make ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Pack of crazy fools, he said. Listening to the young folks, nothing s good enough

Tradition and ritual customs hold a really powerful sway. In the story, we read about
how things have subtlety shifted overtime in the ritual, or the artifacts used during it,
yet it continues on. It s an accepted norm that no one wants to upend. This made me
think about how our cultures customs have shifted with time, but how many aspects
remain unchanged. It could be for nearly anything, such as how holidays are
celebrated, or rituals like weddings, or how challenges to old norms are often viewed
with intrepidation or skepticism.
If the author would have adopted a participant point of view in this story, we
probably would have gained more insight into the rationales for holding an annual
lottery to stone someone. All we can ascertain is that the practice is an old
45. Tear Down This Wall Speech Analysis
On June 12, 1987 President Ronald Reagan gave his speech Tear Down this Wall,
in Brandenburg Gate West Berlin Reagan begins by discussing the purpose of the
Berlin Wall and how the Communists in August of 1961 built it to keep the
Germans from escaping Communist dominated East Berlin into Democratic West
Berlin, that this wall was more than just a wall; it was a stark symbol of decades of a
Cold Warbetween the United States and Soviet Russia only to stop short of actual
warfare. By giving this speech Reagan had intended to rally the people of West
Berlin so the people would accept the western democracy and oppose the Berlin Wall.
Due to Reagan being president the words he said had so much impact, he was able
to use these appeals towards the German people and provide a very convincing
argument. President Ronald Reaganwas known to be a very good communicator also
an excellent rhetorician, during the time of this speech also he was in his second
term of presidency which he had won by a landslide. This had shown that Reagan
wasn t just the leader of the free world but he was good at what he did, therefore the
West Germans believed in what he could do for them. President Reagan had given the
West Germans hope for something better to happen, they trusted him to help them
succeed. They looked to him for help and for an answer which in the end Reagan
gave them both. President Ronald Reagan uses logos to support the main idea that

Short term research program and goals:
1.The first objective is to study the effect of food processing on molecular structure
of processed food. This objective will be achieved through applying detailed
molecular structure characterization studies on food processed under different
processing parameters. This objective is aiming fundamental knowledge on
processing effect on food structure with relating food structure to their functionality.
2.The second objective of this research is to apply and validate a new process

microwave treatments as a processing or pre processing technique to alter the
molecular structure of proteins and fibers thereby enhancing their digestibility and
yielding proteins, fibers or hydrolysates, with novel functionality, nutraceutical
benefits and reduced allergenicity. This objective is aiming to determine the range of
conditions under which to obtain the optimum product properties with improved
activities as functional ingredients in food industry inheriting nurtaceutical properties.
In this regard, my previous investigations revealed that microwave is a promising
technique that could lead to novel functional ingredients[4, 5].

47. Childhood Development Essay
Childhood begins a new era of development, one that is filled with exploration and a
new understanding of the world. Children are finally beginning to understand aspects
of their environment that they were unable to comprehend during infancy. While
development during childhood occurs less rapidly than that which is experienced
during infancy, there are still many major changes that children go through during
this time. During childhood, children experience physical and cognitive growth,
create new understandings of the world around them, begin to process new
information, and are presented with the opportunity for early childhood education.
One of the most obvious developments that occur during childhood are physical
developments. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some issues that could deter development are childhood obesity and malnutrition.
Childhood obesity poses the threat of chronic health conditions such as diabetes,
asthma, joint problems, and heart disease. Furthermore, it can affect social
development due to low self esteem (Childhood Obesity Facts, 2017). On the other
hand, malnourishment in children creates its own set of problems as well. Some of
the complications associated with malnutrition include: delays in cognitive
development, anemia, and osteoporosis (Gavin, 2015).
There are a couple theories by two prominent figures in psychology, Piaget and
Vygotsky, that relate to the cognitive development of children. For example, Piaget s
preoperational stage refers to the time period between ages two and seven when
children use images, words, and drawings to represent their world. Furthermore,
during this stage children begin to reason (Santrock, 2017, pg. 210). Piaget s theory
consists of two substages; the symbolic function stage, and the intuitive thoughts
stage. The symbolic function stage describes the time in a child s life where they
develop the ability to represent objects that are not present (Santrock, 2017, pg. 210).
The second substage is the intuitive thought substage, in which children begin to
wonder about and question the world around them. During this stage, children center
their focus on understanding why things are

50. Feature Matching
Determining the most beneficial augmentative and alternative communication device
is a critical component in AAC because it takes time and dedication to teach a client
how to use the device as well as teach others around them how to understand.
Hypothetically if a SLP were to provide wasted effort the results could have the
potential to be devastating because in some circumstances all the client has is little
time. Lucky enough for speech language pathologists there are models for assessment
that provide guided intervention tactics. Assessment models can be described as
feature matching, the participation model, and or the universal design for learning.
Typically, feature matching is a quick and easy way to guide assessment because

The participation model begins by identifying the participation patterns and
communication needs where the clinician then identifies participation barriers
(Beukelman Mirenda, 2013, p. 108). SLP s are then taught to differentiate between
assessing opportunity barriers and assessing access barriers in the concept that the
working clinician evaluates policy, practice, facilitator skill, facilitator knowledge,
attitude, and current communication (Beukelman Mirenda, 2013, p. 108). The client
s current communication assessment includes a full assessment of their possible
potential to increase natural abilities, an assessment of potential environmental
adaptations, and an assessment of the potential to utilize AAC systems or devices
(Beukelman Mirenda, 2013, p. 108). Once there has been a thorough analysis the
speech language pathologist should plan and implement interventions that will span
across the present and the future with a follow up to determine how effective the
intervention has been in advancing a client s participation (Beukelman Mirenda,

Chapter two begins with Neil back in his anatomy lab. He seems to have become
extremely accustomed to dissection as he [comes] to think that [he] was quite the

cadavers he was cutting were real life humans at one point or another. Neil s
experience with the cadaver hand sets the premises for Chapter two s central idea:
Owen s remarkable one bone two bones lotsa blobs digits pattern. Owen s theory
emerged from an observation that determined that all creatures with limbs share a
common, grand design, and that the differences were simply based on size and
shape. He noticed that whether it was the wings on birds or the legs on frogs, the
grand scheme had little variance.
