How To Start An Essay
Crafting an essay on the seemingly straightforward topic of "How To Start An Essay" might
appear deceptively simple, but the challenge lies in the nuances and intricacies involved in
providing valuable insights. The irony of discussing the initiation of an essay while initiating the
essay itself adds a layer of complexity.
The difficulty arises from the delicate balance one must strike between capturing the reader's
attention and laying a solid foundation for the argument or discussion to follow. A writer must
navigate the fine line between being too verbose and too concise, ensuring that the opening lines
are engaging yet informative.
Furthermore, the challenge lies in catering to a diverse audience with varying levels of familiarity
with the subject matter. A writer must decide whether to begin with a broad overview or dive
straight into a specific point, making choices that can significantly impact the essay's coherence
and accessibility.
The struggle intensifies when considering the myriad approaches one can take to initiate an
essay – be it an anecdote, a quote, a startling fact, or a thought-provoking question. Each
option carries its own set of expectations, and selecting the most appropriate one requires a keen
understanding of the audience and the essay's purpose.
Moreover, the pressure to create an original and compelling opening adds an additional layer of
difficulty. Striking the right balance between uniqueness and adherence to established writing
conventions requires a careful blend of creativity and adherence to established norms.
In conclusion, the seemingly straightforward task of writing an essay on "How To Start An
Essay" is a complex undertaking that demands careful consideration of audience, tone, and
creativity. Crafting an opening that captivates while setting the stage for the rest of the essay
requires a delicate touch and a keen understanding of the intricacies of effective writing.

The Canadian Governing System is not Fair or Democratic...
There are Canadian citizens who thought that the Canadian government we have is
perfect, citizens who believed that every aspect of the government was truly
democratic, and citizens who believe that government could do no wrong. Truly
this group of believers has been living a lie. In our Canadian system of
government, large aspects within are far from democratic and need to be changed.
Liberal minded people will cry out for a change in order for government to serve the
people better, and on the other hand the more conservative thinkers will argue that no
change is needed because our government is efficient and considerate. However, our
voting system, our Senate, and the power vested to the Prime Minister are far from
democratic, do not... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was obvious that he would make votes in favour of Chretien s aims. However,
even with his appointed position he only very rarely showed up for work, ignoring
his basic obligations as Senator. Even when the whole of the government was in
outrage at this incompetence, they could not legally kick him out of office. There
will inevitably be more incidents like these unless the Senate is reformed. Thankfully,
there are several possible ways to reform the Senate as to make it a more democratic
institute.
The Senate, undemocratic as it is, obviously needs some tweaks and changes in the
system to make it more so. The Canadian Senate should reform entirely into a triple
E Senate (Elected, Efficient, Equal). In the Triple E Senate, Senators should be
elected by the voters instead of appointed, the efficient distribution of power towards
the Senate to balance out the power. This would create a more democratic and fairer
Senate that would better serve the needs of the citizens it represents. While the Triple
E Senate may not get things done nearly as quickly as the current Senate, it would at
least make the right decisions for everyone. While the Senate is a major blight upon
Canadian government, it is not the only one.
The Canadian Prime Minister presents the illusion that this so called democratic
Canada is run by the will of the people and attempts to maintain this image, yet the
truth is that the power stays
Brain Transplant Persuasive Speech
When I was little, the first story I heard about someone or something being
cryogenically frozen was when my Dad told me about Ted Williams. Williams was
one of the best baseball players to have ever lived. When I think about him, I think
about the .400 batting average. You only see something like that in the first dozen
games of a season, but this guy did it over a career. Then he got his head frozen for
some reason. I get it, but I don t get it at all. This brings me to this story about a
surgeon wanting to transplant a cryogenically frozen head into the skull of another
body. Sergio Canavero, an Italian surgeon, is actually planning on performing the
world s first human head transplant within the next year. He literally wants to take a...

Canavero allows that one problematic issue with brain transplants, however, would be
that no aspect of your original external body remains the same. Your head is no
longer there, your brain is transplanted into an entirely different skull, he told OOOM
magazine, published by the same company that handles the Italian brain surgeon s
public relations. The flamboyant neuroscientist who some ethicists have decried as
nuts rattled the transplant world when he first outlined his plans for a human head
transplant two years ago in the journal, Surgical Neurology International. Bioethicist
Arthur Caplan called Canavero s latest proposal to merge head transplants with
resurrecting the frozen dead beyond ridiculous. People have their own doubts about
whether anything can be salvaged from these frozen heads or bodies because of the
damage freezing does, said Caplan, head of ethics at NYU Langone Medical Centre
in New York City. Then saying that he has some technique for making this happen,
that has never been demonstrated in frozen animals, is
Descriptive Essay On The New York City
I close my eyes and everything seems so calm that it is as if time itself has stopped
altogether. A wave of peacefulness rushes over me. New York City, I still cannot
believe it. I begin to hear a soft hum in my ears that quickly increases in volume. I
open my eyes and I am suddenly brought back to reality as the train rushes by, its
horn blowing loud and strong. The train slows to a stop and the doors open. All at
once a massive crowd of people rush off of the subway. Those of us standing on the
platform push through the crowd, praying that our massive group of dancers will all
make it onto the train. Due to the morning rushhour there is not a seat in sight and
there is barely any room to stand. As the train lurches forward we struggle to stay
standing. I look out of the window and watch the flashes of graffiti on the dark
walls as we charge forward. The train stops and starts three times. Each station just
as chaotic as the last. We quickly approach our fourth stop, West 4th Street, the
nerves begin to kick in. The train slows to a stop and once again we push through
the morning foot traffic. We follow the signs towards the West 8th Street exit,
struggling to stay together. I think to myself, whatever happens, don t lose sight of
the chaperone. As we approach the stairwell the air begins to feel cooler. We reach
the top of the stairs and the entire atmosphere changes. Whereas the people in the
subway were frantic and rude, the people that filled the sidewalks are calm
Face Construct And Criterion-Related Validity Essay
There are differences among face, construct, and criterion related validity. Face
validity assesses a task under evaluation. A group of subjective experts evaluate
face validity (Maribo, Pedersen, Jensen, Nielsen, 2016). Face validity can be
utilized to motivate stakeholders within an organization. If stakeholders are not
supportive of the results from face validity they will become disengaged. For
example, when measuring the level of professionalism during the hiring process
questions should relate to different levels of professionalism. If not stakeholders
will not be motivated to give their opinion and the true assessment of the hiring
process will not be achieved. Face validity considers the relevance of a test as it

367, 2012). This particular validity is important when it comes to legal defensibility.
Construct validity explains how what is being studied matches the actual measure.
Criterion validity answers the question of whether a test reflects a certain set of
abilities. One way to assess criterion validity is to compare it to a known standard. A
reference is needed to determine an instrument s criterion related validity. Criterion
related validity predicts the future. If a nursing program designed a measure to assess
student learning throughout the program, a test such as the NCLEX would measure
student s ability in this discipline. If the instrument produces the same result as the
superior test the instrument has a high criterion related validity. The higher the
results the more faith stakeholders will have in the assessment tool. A criterion
related validity study is conducted by statistically correlating scores with some
measure of job performance (Biddle, p.308, 2010). Criterion related validity is most
important when it comes to predicting performance in a specific job, and predicting
future

Pandora s Calyx-Krater
Nonetheless by the fifth century Hesiod s story of Pandora became a part of Greek
education and while most Athenians wouldn t have remembered all of the details
they surely would have remembered Pandora s pithos (box). While Pandora is
primarily known for this, there is evidence that shows that the Athenians preferred to
view her benevolent temperament. The pottery created in Athens towards the middle
of the fifth century depicted her as a charitable character. A Calyx Krater, by the
Niobid Painter (Figures 2a 2b) depict Pandoraas an Earth goddess or deity. We know
the woman depicted is Pandora because to the top register shows scene from the birth

depicts a piper in the center of women dancing. This might have been an acceptable
method to narrate the tale of Pandora. The very bottom register on illustrates satyrs
fooling around on the right. Hephaestus is depicted on the left and appears to be
walking towards Pandora in the center who is holding a stalk of grain, signifying,
Pandora as an earth goddess. Hipponax, an ancient scholar who cataloged,
declared: To Pandora, the earth, because she bestows all things necessary for life.
Pandora was also associated with festivals of the first fruits of the earth,
specifically the Thargelia. The Thargelos, meaning pot full of seeds , is a festival
held at the time of harvest. Which would explain the connection Pandora would
have with a jar. Another depiction of Pandora as an earth goddess comes is the
form of a crater (Figures 3a 3b). The crater depicts Pandora on the right rising from
the ground, cropped at the knees, with her arms
Prodigious Moments In The Hobbit
The Hobbit, written by J. R. R. Tolkien, is an audacious novel, containing numerous
evocative encounters and tedious gatherings, as it has many readers hooked since it
is one of the top fantasy novels. In Wilderland, the fantasy world in which this novel
takes place, there are many prodigious moments, which gave readers the feeling that
one is with Bilbo Bagginsfinding the ring, solving the mind puzzling riddles, and
escaping the goblins, who were hunting the entire palace to avenge themselves of
the captain s passing. The author provides valuable imagery when he describes
when Bilbo finds the ring, saying, his hand met what felt like a tiny ring of cold
metal lying on the floor if the tunnel. It was a turning point in his career, but he
Lorelai Victoria Gilmore
Prenatal/Perinatal Development
It s a girl! Lorelai Victoria Gilmore was born on April 26, 1968 with no known birth
defects to Emily and Richard Gilmore. She got an APGAR rating of one for
appearance, two for pulse, two for grimace, a one for activity, and a two for
respiration. Her mothers choose to breast feed her because breast milk is almost
always the best food (lecture slides). She used disposable diapers because they are
easier and Lorelai would just ruin the reusable ones anyway like she ruined her
pretty white dress with twelve petticoats when she spilled grape juice on it during
her first birthday pictures. She slept in a crib because it reduces the risk of Sudden
Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) along with having nothing else in ... Show more

She does not have any known genetic disorders that would affect her progress in
school. Lorelai has been acting differently lately; one day she refuses to go to
school and Emily demands to know why she does not want to go to school,
pestering her until Lorelai spills that she is being bullied at school by a peer so
Emily speaks with the bully s parents and uses her connections to the principle s
wife to assure that Lorelai will be protected from the bully. She fails to address
Lorelais emotional needs though since bullying can lead to depression and suicidal
thoughts. She also prompts the bully to transition from blatant sexual comments
and gestures to using relational aggression to isolate Lorelai and try to make her
peers ignore her (Ludden, 2015). This attempt is not very successful because, aside
from the bully and his immediate clique, Lorelai s wit and gregariousness makes
her popular among her peers. Emily gets a call from the neighbor that Lorelai threw
a rock through their window so she politely tells the neighbor that she will pay for
the window and invites the neighbor to dinner that night where Lorelai is made to
formally apologize. Lorelai is
Gilded Age
The Gilded Age (1869 1896), cynically named so by Mark Twain, was a time of
industrial growth and underwhelming political movement. After Andrew Johnson,
Ulysses S. Grant, the Union s top general, was elected President of the United States
during the 1868 election. Grant himself really wasn t cut out to be a politician,
however, with the support of the Republicans and the campaign slogan let us have
peace that resonated with the still war scarred nation he won. Other one liners such
as vote as you shot and waving the bloody shirt, or reminding the public the gruesome
war they just finished, were commonly used to rally citizens behind the Republican
candidate. Corruption also ran rampant during these years. Crooked politicians and

Another affect was the ignition of debates about how currency should be made and
what to use to back that currency, silver, gold, or both. In the end, legislation was put
in place that worsened the crisis but ended up boosting the national credit. The 1876
election definitely stirred the somewhat stagnant political pot. Rutherford B. Hayes
and Samuel J. Tilden had an impossibly close number of electoral votes. As a result,
a special team of republicans and democrats came together to hash out a deal that
created the Compromise of 1877. The Compromise meant that republicans would
remove union troops from the southern states, ending forced reconstruction, and in
return Hayes was elected president. With reconstruction over, racism grew even more
rampant in America. Jim Crow laws were put into place and unfair sharecropping and
tenant farming contracts ran rampant. Another major racial problem was that of the
white settlers in the West and the Chinese immigrants that had come over during
construction projects such as the building of the Continental Railroad. White
laborers were outraged that the Chinese works were taking their jobs and reacted by
working as hard as possible to make life hard for them. This came to a head when
Congress passed the Chinese Exclusion Act in 1882 that ended nearly all Chinese
immigration until
Benefits Of The Osborne Association
Osborne Association To The Rescue
All over the USA, children like Justin Burl have a parent incarcerated. Ever since
he was a baby, his father has been in Five Points Correctional Facility in Romulus,
New York, a prison six hours away from his Brooklyn home. On top of all that, his
father won t be released until 2021, when Justin is 20 (22). In order for them to stay
connected, the Osborne Association is able to help.
The Osborne Association helps with challenges that children face when it comes to
having a parent incarcerated. (24) Some children are judged when a parent goes to
prison. One example is the CEO of Osborn had her children s father taken to prison,
and her 6 year old s friends canceled play dates when they heard of this (24). In
addition to this challenge, other children bully them because of their parent going to
prison. Another challenge is that some children blame themselves when a parent goes
to prison, but sometimes they also blame the parent for putting them in that situation.
When children blame themselves, sometimes they think if I didn t ask for an iPad
maybe they wouldn t be in prison (24). If children blame their parents for being
incarcerated, they may not call the parent or visit them, so the parent isn t involved ...

this because 95% of people in prison are coming home to their family at some
point. (#24) This vision was important because many people thought of prison as a
place isolated from the world where you are punished, this is why his vision was so
amazing, and also why the Osborne Association is named after

In hockey penalties are also needed to keep the game safe. A penalty is called when
a player breaks the rules, the result is getting sent to the penalty box. Some
common penalties are checking(when player checks other from behind),
fighting(when players engage in throwing punches). There also many other
penalties, one other is interference(when player checks opponents when he does not
have puck, or keeps player from picking up stick or takes it). The referee
determines how long you are in the penalty box by how severe they think it is.
Players in hockey wear specific equipment to stay safe. Their equipment protects
them from collisions, falls, skate blades, and flying pucks. Their equipment
includes helmet, elbow pads, gloves, shoulder pads, body pads, shin guards,
padded pants, and face masks. They also have equipment like sticks and skates.
Goalies have some other equipment also, like a glove with a web to catch the puck
and a glove with an enlarged pad to block. Goalies also have bigger leg pads and

Disney Version Of The Cinderella Movie
Ever since childhood I have always loved the fairy tail of Cinderella. Ever since
the original disney version of the cinderella movie created in the 1950s, many
modern versions of the movie have been made. I have watched every remake ever
made of this movie. One of my all time favorite modern remakes of this movie is
called Another CinderellaStory . Although the story line of the movie remains the
same many aspects of the movie change as well in order to make the movie unique.
The original version of the disney cinderella movie is about a girl who s father
remarries after her mothers death. Soon after being married he died, leaving
cinderella with her evil step mother and two step sisters. Cinderella step mother
forced her to become the servant of their house. In the movie Another Cinderella
Story the beginning story line starts off the same. However, the disney version of
cinderella is a animated cartoon version with many fantasies and unrealistic
talking mice and fairy god mothers. In the modern version of the cinderella movie
Another Cinderella Story the movie is made with real actors. Something else that
changes from the cartoon version of cinderella to the modern version is the name
of the actors. Cinderella is Mary in the modern take of another cinderella story and
The Prince is Joey. Unlike in the original cinderella movie, the movie another
cinderella story is based on music and dance. Mary is a dancer and Joey is a popular
singer and dancer. Towards the

the people believed that the crusade is a spiritual war and going to clear their soul
of sins, the religion is what drove them. The Pope s sermon pushed Cristian s

commandment thou shall not kill. They wanted soldiers to fight but to be rewarded
instead of going to hell and suffer in the afterlife. In the year of 1096 after a whole

The Pros And Cons Of Easter Island
How an ancient, massive statue called a moai has moved from the quarries to its
ahu has many people questioning, how did the ancient natives of Easter Island do
it? Over the years, archeologists and engineers have tried to answer this question.
However all theories of these great occurrences have limitations. This may be
because no one truly knows how the ancients of Easter Island lived and how advance
their culture may have been. Another reason for these limitations is the natural
resources that are available today versus the natural resources of the past. Not only is
there a difference in the natural resources available, but the landscape may also differ
from the past. Taking these factors into consideration it is still possible to theorize

society. In his chapter Solitude Thoreau describes how [his] horizon bounded by

found throughout his book to such an extent that one can conclude that he believes
the best way to live is without society. Thoreau cannot stand to pay his taxes because
he refuses to, recognize the authority of, the state which buys and sells men, women,

People love to have the newest toys, and put great stock in the newest fashion
trends. In present day society, new technology or clothes symbolize status and
wealth that separates the social classes of people. Thoreau shows his readers that
this form of separation has existed since the eighteen hundreds. Thoreau comments
on how people would often throw out perfectly good clothes, because of one little
hole, because people are judged by their clothes (20). This upsets Thoreau because
to him, a little bit of damage does not mean something is useless or broken. He
believes that people should just patch the hole, since it is more cost effective and
will increase the duration of the articles lifetime. However, more commonly the
piece of clothing is thrown out to be replaced by a new article. In Thoreau s eyes,
people follow such a practice because, Our outside and often thin and fanciful

from the fact that people [Donn] garment after garment (21), taking too much pride
in their outward appearance. The idea that the value of a person s life is dictated by
their possessions is one reason why Thoreau believes that society serves to corrupt
and infect everyone who is a part of it. Society refuses to live by necessity alone, but

Lawyers, police man, business man, politicians, life insurance sellers, car sellers and

Brian Hu, the Asian Film the Supernatural.
Fuck this shit. See you next year Cannes. Out . Is a bold twitter quote from the
very famous Brian Hu which gave a lecture at CSU San Marcos film class October
20th 2015. He is the artistic director of Pacific Arts Movement and of the San Diego
Asian Film Foundation who received his PhD in Cinema and Media Studies at
UCLA. His lecture presented grave insight into National cultural specifics but
emphasized mostly on China and Hong Kong. He also broke down genres as they
play a role in the film industry. Martial arts as a genre are very specific to Chinese
cinema and Japan has samurai films of loyalty and justice. As a genre, martial arts
take place at a temples or a forest and is very culturally specific. Other genres like
body genres are specific to a body reacting to a film and no mater were you are in
the world you have a body. In Latin America they have mellow dramas called
telenovelas that people want to cry to and in Korea they have their own form of
drama shows that they cry to as well. Horror films often have us react with our
bodies, for example: if you see something gross you feel it in your body, and at the
same time your body is reacting to the way the characters are. Other body genres
like comedy can have a reactional impact on your body as well. For example: if you
see something funny and you laugh, that is a body reaction.
Brian Hu emphasized that classic Hong Kong action films come from the massive

Childbirth And The Italian Renaissance
Childbirth and Childbearing in Renaissance Italy for upper status woman, was far
different than what childbearing is compared to today s standards. In renaissance
Italy it was said that woman only had one purpose and that purpose was to have
many legitimate babies, especially for the nobility and upper status couples. From
having these babies, the family could inherit a lot of wealth (King, M. L., 2003).
This differs greatly in todays society, as now woman s primary function is not only
to produce children. Woman today are seen as equals to men, and have a larger
significance than just having their husbands children. Childbearing in the
Renaissance was not as easy or as safe as it is today either, as we will further
discuss. This paper will explain the role of child birthing and bearing in the Italian
Renaissance, everything from mortality rates, to wet nurses and this differs from
today s society. As mentioned before, the main role for woman in the renaissance
was to produce children for her husband and handle household affairs, this was
proven in the document by Alberti when he had said Furthermore, I made it a rule
never to speak with her of anything but household matters or of the children. Of
these matters I spoke a great deal to her...(Famiglia, D., 1996, pg 40). Thus showing
the wife s role was greatly dependent on her house and children. It was also
important, especially in the nobility, that the children the wife gave birth to were her
husband s children. Her role
Search Warrant
Mr. Smith s phone records are protected under the Fourth Amendment of the United
States Constitution. This Court has held that, the text of the Fourth Amendment
does not explicitly state when a search warrant must be obtained. Birchfield v.
North Dakota, 136 S.Ct. 2160, 2173 (2016). It has been conceded though, that a
warrant must typically be secured prior to conducting a search. Id. The Nodlin
Police must have been aware of this requirement as they took the proper steps in
acquiring a search warrant to access the data contained in the Memory Hole app. The
police waited until after the search warrant expired before contacting AO for their

Chief Justice Roberts concurred in Missouri v. McNeely that it is possible for
warrants to be issued within hours. 133 S.Ct. 1552, 1573 (2013). He explained that
there are many situations across the United States where the police can e mail
warrant requests to judges and the judge can send back a signed warrant as to not

opportunity to obtain a second search warrant form a judge instead of attempting to

Our Retreat Brought Renewal and Hope for Better Days

Nine teenage girls and their leaders crammed on outdated bench seats as the smell
of various sack dinners and chocolate filled the borrowed short bus. Vinyl seats
cracking, teenage girls laughing and the makeshift radio blasting we followed
behind the boys in their SUV to Woodland Park. The brisk March wind rattled the
old windows of our little white and blue, borrowed bus. Miles of twisting roads and
pinetrees that seemed to pierce the low floating clouds lead us to our retreat house.
Gravel crunched beneath our tires, hitting the sides of our bus, creating a rumble
under our feet as we pulled up the drive.
Great gray boulders outlined planters along the front of the patio and knotted wood
planking covered every side of the house. Two... Show more content on

Afterwards, solemn hearts slowly trudged along the staircases to our respective rooms.
Moods lightened as the girls soaked their feet in the master bath tub before lights
out. Goldfish, M Ms and Sour Patch Kids became ammo as we slingshot them
across the bathroom to each other using hair ties. Secrets and random thoughts were
whispered under the glow of flashlights until we could no longer keep our eyes open
after lights out. A comfortable silence fell over the house as we all finally drifted off.
Groggy faces slowly made appearances as the heavenly aroma of bacon and waffles
coaxed us from our dreams before the sun had even crested the mountain ridges, the
following morning. Dream catchers of various sizes fluttered in the pine scented
wind on the deck after breakfast. Teams ran through the trees on a scavenger hunt,
breaking the silence as sunlight streamed through the pine needles. In the afternoon,
colorful rays of light poured through the stained glass window as small groups
bonded over boxes of tissues and shared memories of our middle school youth group.
Another intense round of sardines had us piling into hidden cabinets and coat
closets. Playful banter between the more egocentric members of our teams kept the
games interesting as we all tried to beat each other in games of tag and never have I

During solitude we snuck off to the balcony with a view of Pike s Peak. Cloudless
skies and chirping birds surrounded us as we sat

Achieving Measure of Contentment in Charles Dickens Great Expectations Works
Cited Not Included Great Expectations is a novel that not only satires the issues of
Victorian society, such as status and crime, but additionally centres on the rites of
passage for a child living in that society. It is through this central focus on rites of
passage that Dickens is able to convey to the reader messages about the serious issues
he felt so strongly about. One such issue is an issue that concerns all humans. It is the

The first of these, I believe, is of good and bad values. A value is a moral principle
or belief that is important to you. Factors included in Pip s search for good values
are the pressure of peers, money and confusion. As a young boy, the life Pip leads
at the forge with Joe and Mrs Joe dictates the course of his life. It is all he has ever
known, and therefore it is all he can ever dream of aspiring to. At this point of the
novel, Pip is satisfied with all his life represents and all his life will lead to: he is
content. The values Pip learns at the forge come from Joe, who teaches moral
simplicity and altruism through his own honest personality. Pip describes him to
be: a mild, good natured, sweet tempered, easy going, foolish, dear fellow a sort of
Hercules in strength, and also in weakness. (Page 6). These few lines depict how
Pip admires Joe as someone that has the values of a meek, self sacrificing person;
that has achieved their own happiness through living good values. Building up Joe
as a character has been achieved well here by Dickens, as he uses numerous
synonyms to generate Joe s moral temperament. Pip likens Joe to the ancient heroic
figure of Hercules portraying that, as a blacksmith, Pip recognises Joe to be
physically strong, but also in weakness indicates that Joe has a psychological or
behavioural flaw or weakness: he is
A Study On Dual Immersion Program
Summary 11
This article written by Potowoski was grounded on a study involving High school
graduates whom had completed a dual immersion program. A dual immersion
program might have different names that people refer to them as. I have heard such
names as two way immersion or, even two way bilingual immersion. They are the
same program. They include native English speaking students and native speakers of
a foreign language. The goals of dual immersion programs are to develop
bilingualism, academic achievement, and of course cross cultural competencies in
both languages .This study analyzes their proficiency in reading writing and
speaking, and also it observes their capability of producing and identifying the correct

How accurate are these dual immersion graduates in the production of three specific
verb forms the present subjunctive, the past subjunctive, and the conditional? 3. To
what extent are these dual immersion students capable of producing and recognizing
socio linguistically appropriate Spanish?
The setting of the study was an Inter American magnet school was one of the oldest
dual immersion schools in the US. It populates about 640 students ranging from
pre k to 8th grade. There were 52 participants. 30 of them were heritage speakers and
age they began learning English was :(9 of them by birth, 14 since preschool, 5 since
kinder or first, 2 since 3rd or 4th grade) 17 knew Spanish as a second language and
ages they began were (6 since preschool, 8 in kinder or first, 3 in 3rd or 4th grade)
and 5 were late arrival in which all 5 arrived in US during 6th or 7th only two years
before study. The measures were focused on dual immersion students overall written,
reading, and oral abilities. Two measures were used to test students oral Spanish. One
was the Spanish Language Assessment Scales Oral, a standardized exam. It includes
identifying vocabulary items displayed in ten drawings, a multiple choice listening
comprehension section, and listening to a story and then retelling it while viewing
picture prompts. Another way they were tested was by the Foreign Language Oral
Skills Evaluation Matrix (FLOSEM), The FLOSEM assesses oral language

Ethical concerns regarding the use of embryo derived embryonic stem cells (ES), and
the immune response elicited by differentiated ES cells, are being circumvented by
using induced pluripotential stem cells (iPSCs) derived from patients somatic cells.
These can be differentiated into other cell types including pancreatic пЃў cells for

Most whole foods have polyphenols, which are antioxidants contained in vibrant
colors. This added advantage to eating fresh foods is just another reason for you to
avoid processed ones. Your foodwill look good, as well as maintain your health.
HOW FREQUENTLY SHOULD YOU HAVE THIS FOOD?
As you know, breakfast is an essential meal. Your body requires some replenishment
after rejuvenating itself throughout the night, which you ll need to remain active and
focused throughout the day. The best time to eat breakfast is about an hour after you
wake up. This will help start your day off by stimulating your metabolic rate.
However, most people aren t that used to keeping this habit. If you aren t comfortable
with this, you should start by eating something that is both light and high in
nutritional value instead of a fuller meal.
The largest meal you consume all day should be eaten at lunch. At this point, your
body is full of digestive enzymes that can quickly metabolize the nutrients you
consume. These processes will keep you active and mentally focused, even if you are
eating a lower amount of calories than normal.
Your dinner should be eaten earlier rather than late at night. Try to have a light meal
between 5 7pm. If you tend to sleep a bit later than most and need some sustenance
for nighttime, at least eat this meal with two hours to spare from bedtime. Eating
right before you sleep will prevent your digestive system from doing its job to the
fullest
Striving for Authentic Happiness Essays
Globalization and the development of technology have provided people with more
opportunities to do whatever they want. Because of the choices, people seem to be
happier to make their own choices. However, Martin E.P. Seligman, the author of
Authentic Happiness, would argue that they are not happy because that kind of
happinessdoes not last long. In his book, Seligman explains that there are two kinds
of happiness, pleasureand gratification. He says, [t]he pleasures are delights that have
clear sensory and strong emotional components, what philosophers call raw feels :
ecstasy, thrills, orgasm, delight, mirth, exuberance, and comfort. They are evanescent,
and they involve little, if any, thinking (102). As he shows, pleasure is... Show more

According to him, gratification is a key for people to have a good life. However,
Seligman explains, [g]ratification dispels self absorption, and the more one has the
flow that gratification produces, the less depressed one is (119). Although it is clear
that people need gratification more than pleasures, he points out that [t]o start the
process of eschewing easy pleasures and engaging in more gratifications is hard
(119). This difficulty of attaining gratification might make people to choose pleasure
rather than gratification. Thus, according to Seligman s definitions of happiness, it
is easier for humans to seek pleasure rather than to seek gratification. In The
Psychology of Globalization , Jeffery Jensen Arnett illustrates that young people
focus on self longer by extending adulthood. Arnett notes, in global culture, people
value on individualism, free market economics, and democracy and include freedom
of choice, individual rights, openness to change, and tolerance of differences (779).
Arnett argues that globalization, especially increasing the number of choices and
allowing people to have freedom of choices affect each individual s psychological
functioning. He points out, [w]hen people are allowed to make their own choices
about values, love, and work, the likelihood may be enhanced that they will find a
Renaissance Influence On Art
The Renaissance, a time defined as the rebirth, occurred in Italy between 1350 and
1600. Spreading quickly throughout Europe, with the innovation of the printing
press, it caused rippling effects. The Renaissance ultimately altered the aged
education of the Dark Ages and renewed it with studies of the more classic works
instead of theology. Classic art and literature grew extremely popular, contrasting the
lack of interest in them before. Many artists became prominent advocates for the
revival of the ideals of the classical past. The artists, using their masterpieces,

Born March 6, 1475, Michelangelo Buonarroti is considered [to be] one of the most
famous artists of the Italian Renaissance. (Biography.com Editors) As a child,
Michelangelo had a greater interest in artwork and its production rather than
schooling, so at the age of 13 his father allowed him to become Domenico
Ghirlandaio s apprentice in Florence. During his teenage years, Michelangelo
studied classic sculpture in the Florentine gardens of the Medici family, who were
wealthy and allowed him access to the elite of Florence. After studying there for a
few years, he eventually moved to Rome, where he would work until he died.
Known for his sculptures the Pieta and David, and for his paintings on the ceiling
of the Sistine Chapel and the Last Judgement Michelangelo had many other works.
Michelangelo s innovated artistry was believed to have achieved a whole new
depth over the timespan. Like da Vinci, Michelangelo is said to have influenced
Raphael, an artist who actually was his arch rival. This is an example of how
Michelangelo was influential during the Renaissance. His artwork depicted scenes
from the bible and were painted in the Sistine Chapel which is a major contribution to
the culture and beliefs of the time.
Raffaello Sanzio, famously known as Raphael, was an artist and architect born April

A Passage To India Character Analysis
The novel, A Passage to India written by E. M. Forster is a modernist novel ,which
portrays a colonial India under British rule before its liberation. It is set in India, in
the 20th century. In the novel, Foster structures his book into 3 sections: Mosque,
Cave, and Temple to portray the complex relationship of the characters as they
struggle to getting together during the turbulent time in India. Mosque, the setting in
the novel symbolizes the introduction of Mrs. Moore and Adela, who are
newcomers to India looking for an opportunity to form a potential friendship with
the Indians. As Mosque begins all these separations and gaps (White), is set up and
explored at different levels. Foster first reveals the gap between Indians and the
English. Chandrapore is two towns, the native section and the English civil station,
from which the town appears to be totally different place (White). Foster describes
the town as share nothing with the city except the over arching sky (Forster 3). This
division in the setting foreshadows the wide gulf that separates the rulers from the
ruled. Mosque is the cold weather, most suitable to human life and activity, the
climate in which men and live and grow (White). Like the weather, the relationship
between Mrs. Moore and Adela is cool and relaxed. However, Forster s text is not
optimistic about the future about the future of Indians and British relations, but it is
prophetic ( Lilburn). Servants response to Aziz he had in fact

Taylor learns some good things about Lou Ann, one of them is the relationship.
Lou Ann shows Taylor that the relationship is good which she means both
friendship and community relationship. Besides Mattie, Taylor also needs helps
from Lou Ann and sometimes depends on her. In chapter six Valentine s Day,
Taylor expresses the feeling that she dislikes the idea Lou Ann and her act like a

to work to support the family (84 85). Kingsolver might suggest that growing close
to Lou Ann makes Taylor scared. In other words, Taylor s real problem is a fear of
attachment. However, Lou Ann proves to Taylor that relationship is helpful and
good. Together, the two friends make a safe and happy home for themselves and
their children. They both can share the feelings, talk, laugh and get drunk together.
In short, their conversations actually make them feel better and understand each
other more. Moreover, the two ladies support and help each other through good and
bad times such as taking turn to cook and take care of the children. Also, Taylor
helps Lou Ann become more independently, gain more confident and self reliance,
begin to express opinions aloud, speak up and feel less inclined to bow to the
opinions of others. In return, Lou Ann helps and protects Taylor when she faces
difficult situations. In chapter twelve Into The terrible Night, after the incident

Zombies are one of the biggest pop culture horror icons currently influencing all areas
of the entertainment industry. Intellectuals such as Noam Chomsky, Chris Hedges,
Paul Krugman, and others have used the zombie as a metaphor for everything from
our dysfunctional financial system to our alienating political institutions. From TV to
movies to books, the idea of a zombieinvasion has entered the minds of several
different creators. Even though these all have the purpose of entertainment, they also
reflect current society. Looking into the deeper meaning of these works, zombies are

The focus of this film was on a group of people trapped on the roof of a shopping
mall during a zombie invasion. This time the message was not on race issues but
on consumerism. With the creation of the local shopping center, people started to
gather in hordes in these epicenters. When these shopping malls started becoming a
social center, it resulted in a mass growth of spending. Romero takes this issue of
the obsessive attraction to these places to the next level by having members of
society surviving there. Even the characters ponder why there are so many
zombies in the area in a bit of commentary. While on the roof of the mall one of the
characters, Peter, says, They re after this place. They don t know why; they just
remember. Remember that they want to be here (Posey 1). According to zombie
scholar and author Dr. Arnold T. Blumberg, Dawn of the Dead is the perfect
metaphor for the zombie [...] we are a nation that has become the shambling
consumers that walk up and down the hallways desperately wanting to consume and
we have lost all individuality . The movie is a statement on how even when reduced
to pure instinct being a consumer has become as natural to humans as
Copland s Three Levels Of Listening To Music
The selections by Copland, taken from his 1957 book What to Listen for in Music,
express his belief that one listens to music on several planes the sensuous, the
expressive, and the sheerly musical. After a brief discussion of what constitues each
of these planes, he admits that rarely does one listen on only one plane, but rather the
astute listener is constantly moving from one plane to another as the musical work
unfolds, (Pitman) Aaron Copland discusses three levels of listening to music:
sensuous, expressive, and sheerly musical. The sensuous level, or plane, is the most
basic, but pleasurable level of enjoyment. This level of listening requires the least
amount of brain power; therefore we usually engage this level when we use
Knights Of Labor In The Late 1800s
The late 1800 s were a time in American history where the country saw tremendous
economic growth. Big businesses ran the country and even held power over the
government. According to Howard Zinn s A People s History of the United States,
the government took bribes from business leaders. These bribes allowed the big
businesses to take advantage of workers. Laborers at the time we faced with
extremely long work hours and very little pay. In hopes of reversing their luck,
many workers took to strikes and riots to get what they wanted. However, the big
business friendly government put an end to many of these occurrences. Due to the
fact that America was run by a government bribed by big business, workers received

Many had to work from dawn until dusk and barely got to see their families. In the
spring of 1866, a group of three hundred fifty thousand workers went on strike in
hopes of an eight hour work day. Throughout cities all over the country large
groups of strikers took to the street. In New York, twenty five thousand people
marched down Broadway all in hope of a shorter work day. The biggest effect of
the strike took place in Chicago. With forty thousand strikers, every railroad,
stockyard and many businesses were forced to close. Unlike most strikes against
big business, many people did receive what they had asked for. In fact, forty five
thousand people were given the eight hour work day just to not strike. The meer
numbers of this strike truly speak to how desperate workers were of shorter work
days. However, big business did not care the only thing on their mind was money.
The only reason many of these workers received their demand were due to the fact
that business would lose more in a few days of shut down as compared to 2 hours
less work a day. Another example of how work hours affected the poor was
described by Morris Rosenfeld as, I have a little boy at home... A stranger I am to
my child; and a stranger my child is to me. This excerpt from his poem entitled My
Boy shows how due to the long work hours, many parents were not home enough to

Non-Lethal Weapons Case Study
Throughout history, law enforcement agencies have trained and taught individuals
within their organization how to use various weapons from non lethal to lethal in
which are required for them to carry out their daily jobs. However, with crime rates
continuing to increase and only a handful of non lethal weapons available to law
enforcement, a physicist in the late 1960 s by the name of Jack Cover, would invent
the first taserthat would become known as the go to weapon for officers. This
weapon provided officers a way to use non lethal methods when dealing with
suspects who are not compliant and present a threat to themselves, the public, or law
enforcement personnel. From 1976 1995 tasers were considered firearms as they

These concerns ultimately stemmed from the court case Armstrong v Village of
Pinehurst as a mentally ill patient would succumb to injuries caused by an officer s
taser. Mr. Armstrong who was diagnosed with bipolar and paranoid schizophrenia
was encouraged to seek treatment by his sister do to his showcasing of odd behaviors
such as putting punctures in his leg and stating, he was letting the air out (Oliver
J.E). Once at the hospital Mr. Armstrong started to undergo evaluations but became
frightened and left the ER. Within minutes of leaving the ER, the physician stated
that Mr. Armstrong was a danger to himself and began the process of issuing
involuntary commitment papers and called the local police department for
assistance. Once officers arrived they noticed Armstrong wondering around and
guided him to a safe place where he then sat down, holding onto a stop sign pole.
With no luck of getting him off the pole, a police officer then used his taser in
which only seemed to increase Mr. Armstrong s resistance which eventually led to
numerous people prying him off and handcuffing him. It was a few seconds after the
incident that it was noted that the subject was not breathing and CPR took place,
however, Mr. Armstrong died from excited delirium syndrome. With the court case
in full swing, hours of testimony and evidence gathered the 4th Circuit Court of
Appeals ruled in this case, that a person s mental health status should be a factor to
consider when determining proper use of force. The court further required that when
using tasers, in any mode it is considered serious injurious force and is not
appropriate when dealing with suspects who are not a serious threat or posing any
immediate danger to anyone besides
The Simpson And Simpson Case
Twenty two years ago, football star, O.J. Simpson, was put on trial for the murders
of his ex wife Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman. Despite the fact that he
was found not guilty, some still believe he is guilty of these murders. The evidence
from the trial, however, proves that O.J. Simpson is innocent and did not kill Nicole
Brown Simpsonand Ron Goldman. O.J. Simpson was born in 1947 in San
Francisco, California. He became a college football star at USC, winning the
Heisman Trophyin 1968, and later enjoyed a record setting career in the NFL . The
O.J. Simpson trial was an unprecedented media sensation in the United States. It
was also big news in many other parts of the world. Here is a sampling of
international reaction to the verdict. In Britain, where the Simpson case has been
closely followed by the news media, news broadcasts were extended to allow live
coverage of the verdict. I think a lot of people have looked at American society
through the prism of the O.J. Simpson case, seen the racial divisions, seen the
issues of access to the judicial system been helped by extreme wealth, and perhaps
conclusions have been drawn about the American social system, said ITN Deputy
Editor Michael Jermey. Drinkers in a London bar watched the verdict live and
passed their own verdict on U.S. justice. It should have been done like a normal
trial, said one patron. It shouldn t have been televised either, made a big drama out
if it. It s like watching a soap. I think

Speed Art Museum
The Speed Art Museum, originally known as the J.B. Speed Memorial Museum, now
commonly referred to as the Speed by locals in the Louisville area, is the oldest,
largest, and the primary museum of art in Kentucky.
In 2013, the museum decided to conduct a three year renovation. The new North
Building includes an unprecedented 9,000 square foot gallery dedicated to the
display of the Speed s contemporary art collection. The museum hired architect,
Kulapat Yantrasast. The architect decided to add multiple new additions to the

Including artwork from the fourth millennium BC to today s world, the museum truly
holds a collection to see. From incredibly large painting created in the thirteen
hundreds to marvelous detailed sculptures built in the early seventeen hundreds the
museum s eight collections holds a variety of items to see.
Each of the exhibits are done very well, including a variety of items for each
collection. Each exhibit includes art pieces that fit in their category. For example, my
favorite art piece of the museum, the fifteen foot painting of ancient dutch
philosophers would fit in the category, Dutch and Flemish .
My overall view of the museum is very positive. I truly enjoyed visiting the museum
and observing all of the various art pieces the museum holds. It was very interesting
to see the large paintings in the Dutch and Flemish collection because I personally
have always been a painting type of person rather than sculptures and drawings.
I would most definitely recommend the museum to others. I would mostly
recommend it to those individuals who enjoy to see artwork and are interested in
historical paintings and

  • 2. The Canadian Governing System is not Fair or Democratic... There are Canadian citizens who thought that the Canadian government we have is perfect, citizens who believed that every aspect of the government was truly democratic, and citizens who believe that government could do no wrong. Truly this group of believers has been living a lie. In our Canadian system of government, large aspects within are far from democratic and need to be changed. Liberal minded people will cry out for a change in order for government to serve the people better, and on the other hand the more conservative thinkers will argue that no change is needed because our government is efficient and considerate. However, our voting system, our Senate, and the power vested to the Prime Minister are far from democratic, do not... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It was obvious that he would make votes in favour of Chretien s aims. However, even with his appointed position he only very rarely showed up for work, ignoring his basic obligations as Senator. Even when the whole of the government was in outrage at this incompetence, they could not legally kick him out of office. There will inevitably be more incidents like these unless the Senate is reformed. Thankfully, there are several possible ways to reform the Senate as to make it a more democratic institute. The Senate, undemocratic as it is, obviously needs some tweaks and changes in the system to make it more so. The Canadian Senate should reform entirely into a triple E Senate (Elected, Efficient, Equal). In the Triple E Senate, Senators should be elected by the voters instead of appointed, the efficient distribution of power towards the Senate to balance out the power. This would create a more democratic and fairer Senate that would better serve the needs of the citizens it represents. While the Triple E Senate may not get things done nearly as quickly as the current Senate, it would at least make the right decisions for everyone. While the Senate is a major blight upon Canadian government, it is not the only one. The Canadian Prime Minister presents the illusion that this so called democratic Canada is run by the will of the people and attempts to maintain this image, yet the truth is that the power stays

Williams was one of the best baseball players to have ever lived. When I think about him, I think about the .400 batting average. You only see something like that in the first dozen games of a season, but this guy did it over a career. Then he got his head frozen for some reason. I get it, but I don t get it at all. This brings me to this story about a surgeon wanting to transplant a cryogenically frozen head into the skull of another body. The flamboyant neuroscientist who some ethicists have decried as nuts rattled the transplant world when he first outlined his plans for a human head transplant two years ago in the journal, Surgical Neurology International. Bioethicist Arthur Caplan called Canavero s latest proposal to merge head transplants with resurrecting the frozen dead beyond ridiculous. People have their own doubts about whether anything can be salvaged from these frozen heads or bodies because of the damage freezing does, said Caplan, head of ethics at NYU Langone Medical Centre in New York City. Then saying that he has some technique for making this happen, that has never been demonstrated in frozen animals, is
  • 4. Descriptive Essay On The New York City I close my eyes and everything seems so calm that it is as if time itself has stopped altogether. A wave of peacefulness rushes over me. New York City, I still cannot believe it. I begin to hear a soft hum in my ears that quickly increases in volume. I open my eyes and I am suddenly brought back to reality as the train rushes by, its horn blowing loud and strong. The train slows to a stop and the doors open. All at once a massive crowd of people rush off of the subway. Those of us standing on the platform push through the crowd, praying that our massive group of dancers will all make it onto the train. Due to the morning rushhour there is not a seat in sight and there is barely any room to stand. As the train lurches forward we struggle to stay standing. I look out of the window and watch the flashes of graffiti on the dark walls as we charge forward. The train stops and starts three times. Each station just as chaotic as the last. We quickly approach our fourth stop, West 4th Street, the nerves begin to kick in. The train slows to a stop and once again we push through the morning foot traffic. We follow the signs towards the West 8th Street exit, struggling to stay together. I think to myself, whatever happens, don t lose sight of the chaperone. As we approach the stairwell the air begins to feel cooler. We reach the top of the stairs and the entire atmosphere changes. Whereas the people in the subway were frantic and rude, the people that filled the sidewalks are calm
  • 5. Face Construct And Criterion-Related Validity Essay There are differences among face, construct, and criterion related validity. Face validity assesses a task under evaluation. A group of subjective experts evaluate face validity (Maribo, Pedersen, Jensen, Nielsen, 2016). Face validity can be utilized to motivate stakeholders within an organization. If stakeholders are not supportive of the results from face validity they will become disengaged. For example, when measuring the level of professionalism during the hiring process questions should relate to different levels of professionalism. If not stakeholders will not be motivated to give their opinion and the true assessment of the hiring process will not be achieved. This particular validity is important when it comes to legal defensibility. Construct validity explains how what is being studied matches the actual measure. Criterion validity answers the question of whether a test reflects a certain set of abilities. One way to assess criterion validity is to compare it to a known standard. A reference is needed to determine an instrument s criterion related validity. Criterion related validity predicts the future. If a nursing program designed a measure to assess student learning throughout the program, a test such as the NCLEX would measure student s ability in this discipline. If the instrument produces the same result as the superior test the instrument has a high criterion related validity. The higher the results the more faith stakeholders will have in the assessment tool. A criterion related validity study is conducted by statistically correlating scores with some measure of job performance (Biddle, p.308, 2010). Criterion related validity is most important when it comes to predicting performance in a specific job, and predicting future

In the end, legislation was put in place that worsened the crisis but ended up boosting the national credit. The 1876 election definitely stirred the somewhat stagnant political pot. Rutherford B. Hayes and Samuel J. Tilden had an impossibly close number of electoral votes. As a result, a special team of republicans and democrats came together to hash out a deal that created the Compromise of 1877. The Compromise meant that republicans would remove union troops from the southern states, ending forced reconstruction, and in return Hayes was elected president. With reconstruction over, racism grew even more rampant in America. Jim Crow laws were put into place and unfair sharecropping and tenant farming contracts ran rampant. Another major racial problem was that of the white settlers in the West and the Chinese immigrants that had come over during construction projects such as the building of the Continental Railroad. White laborers were outraged that the Chinese works were taking their jobs and reacted by working as hard as possible to make life hard for them. This came to a head when Congress passed the Chinese Exclusion Act in 1882 that ended nearly all Chinese immigration until

He is the artistic director of Pacific Arts Movement and of the San Diego Asian Film Foundation who received his PhD in Cinema and Media Studies at UCLA. His lecture presented grave insight into National cultural specifics but emphasized mostly on China and Hong Kong. He also broke down genres as they play a role in the film industry. Martial arts as a genre are very specific to Chinese cinema and Japan has samurai films of loyalty and justice. As a genre, martial arts take place at a temples or a forest and is very culturally specific. Other genres like body genres are specific to a body reacting to a film and no mater were you are in the world you have a body. In Latin America they have mellow dramas called telenovelas that people want to cry to and in Korea they have their own form of drama shows that they cry to as well. Horror films often have us react with our bodies, for example: if you see something gross you feel it in your body, and at the same time your body is reacting to the way the characters are. Other body genres like comedy can have a reactional impact on your body as well. For example: if you see something funny and you laugh, that is a body reaction. • 19. Childbirth And The Italian Renaissance Childbirth and Childbearing in Renaissance Italy for upper status woman, was far different than what childbearing is compared to today s standards. In renaissance Italy it was said that woman only had one purpose and that purpose was to have many legitimate babies, especially for the nobility and upper status couples. From having these babies, the family could inherit a lot of wealth (King, M. L., 2003). This differs greatly in todays society, as now woman s primary function is not only to produce children. Woman today are seen as equals to men, and have a larger significance than just having their husbands children. Childbearing in the Renaissance was not as easy or as safe as it is today either, as we will further discuss. This paper will explain the role of child birthing and bearing in the Italian Renaissance, everything from mortality rates, to wet nurses and this differs from today s society. Of these matters I spoke a great deal to her...(Famiglia, D., 1996, pg 40). Thus showing the wife s role was greatly dependent on her house and children. It was also important, especially in the nobility, that the children the wife gave birth to were her husband s children. Her role

Nine teenage girls and their leaders crammed on outdated bench seats as the smell of various sack dinners and chocolate filled the borrowed short bus. Vinyl seats cracking, teenage girls laughing and the makeshift radio blasting we followed behind the boys in their SUV to Woodland Park. The brisk March wind rattled the old windows of our little white and blue, borrowed bus. Miles of twisting roads and pinetrees that seemed to pierce the low floating clouds lead us to our retreat house. Gravel crunched beneath our tires, hitting the sides of our bus, creating a rumble under our feet as we pulled up the drive. Great gray boulders outlined planters along the front of the patio and knotted wood planking covered every side of the house. Two... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Secrets and random thoughts were whispered under the glow of flashlights until we could no longer keep our eyes open after lights out. A comfortable silence fell over the house as we all finally drifted off. Groggy faces slowly made appearances as the heavenly aroma of bacon and waffles coaxed us from our dreams before the sun had even crested the mountain ridges, the following morning. Dream catchers of various sizes fluttered in the pine scented wind on the deck after breakfast. Teams ran through the trees on a scavenger hunt, breaking the silence as sunlight streamed through the pine needles. In the afternoon, colorful rays of light poured through the stained glass window as small groups bonded over boxes of tissues and shared memories of our middle school youth group. Another intense round of sardines had us piling into hidden cabinets and coat closets. Playful banter between the more egocentric members of our teams kept the games interesting as we all tried to beat each other in games of tag and never have I ever. During solitude we snuck off to the balcony with a view of Pike s Peak. Cloudless skies and chirping birds surrounded us as we sat

Achieving Measure of Contentment in Charles Dickens Great Expectations Works Cited Not Included Great Expectations is a novel that not only satires the issues of Victorian society, such as status and crime, but additionally centres on the rites of passage for a child living in that society. A value is a moral principle or belief that is important to you. Factors included in Pip s search for good values are the pressure of peers, money and confusion. As a young boy, the life Pip leads at the forge with Joe and Mrs Joe dictates the course of his life. It is all he has ever known, and therefore it is all he can ever dream of aspiring to. At this point of the novel, Pip is satisfied with all his life represents and all his life will lead to: he is content. The values Pip learns at the forge come from Joe, who teaches moral simplicity and altruism through his own honest personality. Pip describes him to be: a mild, good natured, sweet tempered, easy going, foolish, dear fellow a sort of Hercules in strength, and also in weakness. (Page 6). These few lines depict how Pip admires Joe as someone that has the values of a meek, self sacrificing person; that has achieved their own happiness through living good values. Building up Joe as a character has been achieved well here by Dickens, as he uses numerous synonyms to generate Joe s moral temperament. Pip likens Joe to the ancient heroic figure of Hercules portraying that, as a blacksmith, Pip recognises Joe to be physically strong, but also in weakness indicates that Joe has a psychological or behavioural flaw or weakness: he is

Because of the choices, people seem to be happier to make their own choices. However, Martin E.P. Seligman, the author of Authentic Happiness, would argue that they are not happy because that kind of happinessdoes not last long. In his book, Seligman explains that there are two kinds of happiness, pleasureand gratification. He says, [t]he pleasures are delights that have clear sensory and strong emotional components, what philosophers call raw feels : ecstasy, thrills, orgasm, delight, mirth, exuberance, and comfort.
