Figurative language is language that means more
than what it says on the surface.
Poets use figurative language MORE THAN
the literal one.

5. Recognizing the literal language
“I’ve eaten so much I feel as if I could
literally burst.”
In this case, the person is not using the word
literally in its true meaning. Literal means
“exact” and “not exaggerated”

Whenever we describe something by comparing
it with something else, we are using figurative
language.
Literal: He ran fast.
Figurative: He ran fast like a wind.

A simile is a word that compares in a sentence.
It is a figure of speech that says one thing is
like another different thing. You can usually
tell if a simile is present in a sentence when
you see the words as or like.

iron bands.

Kim ate his food like a vacuum cleaner.

A metaphor compares words in a sentence.
Instead of saying that one thing is like
something else, a metaphor says that one thing
is another different thing. It doesn’t use the
words like and as.
