WGST 300 BLACK CINEMA
Option A: Select two or more films from this course and compare and/or contrast them, using one
or more of the above criteria (shared themes, etc.). SUPERFLY and DUTCHMAN
Lights, camera, and action!! A popular phrase noted throughout the film and cinematic industry, but
to directors, actors, and viewers of African Americanor Black Cinema this famous phrase helped
jumpstart a movement throughout the black culture. Starting with radical movies that explained
racial undertones and barriers in the United States for freedom and equality, The Dutchman and
Superfly facilitated more than just a wakeup call to individuals of every race, particularly the black
people, but they also helped voice the concerns and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With this notion provided by Hall the underlying victory in Superfly not only for the black
culture, but society as a whole, as we remember the popularity not only by black culture, but by
white and Latino as well. As Priest rises over adversity, and takes his success, not only does he
maintain a financial edge, but one that kicks butt towards the end of the movie. Yet, it is this same
notion that is the downfall for Clay in The Dutchman . As a woman of thirty, with no sexual virtue
who is mentally ill, Lula in the story is the picture of what white society has deemed invaluable
and powerless. However, when opposed to Clay, a young man with and education, the traditional
would be image of success and normalcy, ironically Lula becomes all powerful (authoritative),
because of her race ( The Dutchman oppression, 2009). It is Lula s absolute command of the other
passengers that shows Baracka s stance that race is the ultimate determining factor in society.
From silence to sound, both of these films needless to say were indeed a necessary and engraved
component in the black movement for equality. Ingred Bergman once said, no form of art goes
beyond ordinary consciousness as film does, straight to our emotions, deep into the twilight of

The Game Of Dice
My mini classroom lesson plan on the game of Dice did not showcase any of my top five
strengths. The one strength it came close to was citizenship, teamwork, and loyalty. The game of
Dice is played with multiply people and each person had to be supportive and patient with the
person before them. When learninga gamefor the first time you want all the participants to work
together to make sure they understand the concepts and how it works. The game is played
individually, but you do have to participate in the game as a group in order to succeed. Dice is a
very strategic game and it can be played in teams. In my class presentation we played individually,
but if we had played it in groups we would have relied more on teamwork because the team... Show

them. One of my five strengths that I would like to improve before my practicum starts is
fairness, equity, and justice. I want to make sure that when I walk into the classroom that I will
treat every one of my students fairly. I do not want any of the students to feel like I treat them

using my voice in group settings. When I start my practicum, I need to be ready to contribute to

In this chapter, I present how two pop cultural sites The film The Kids Are All Right, the television
series The Fosters represent butch motherhood. My intention is to expose the discourses in action
to reveal how they operate and contain instruction that delivers as disciplinary performance. I divide
the following sections into individual discussions of each cultural text to reveal the cogs within
each site. I then compare and contrast both texts to investigate the tensions between both
productions and how the discourses thematically collude. Finally, this comparative analysis
considers the disciplinary discourse that develops in accord with genderand motherhood.

Reinforcing The Gender Binary
Jules and Nic are slightly ambiguous representations of butch and femme yet the film overtly
reinforces binary gender roles in its homonormative depiction of the family. Nic presents a more
masculine identity: she has messy, cropped hair, wears little makeup, and wears relaxed fitting
jeans and button down dress shirts. She is quick to anger, aggressive, a workaholic doctor, and
operates more on conservatism and logic. Nic is both the disciplinarian and breadwinner in the
family. In contrast, Jules is more visually feminized. She has long, smooth red hair, wears sexy lacy
lingerie, and flowy or fitted t shirts. Free spirit Jules is a more liberal. She is the nurturing parent
emotionally sensitive, compassionate and craves intimacy, characteristics that construct the femme
(Martin 1996). These characteristics that construct Jules are antithetical to masculinity (Crewe
2015). These roles suggest that Nic is the man and Jules is the woman. This homonormative
discourse continues throughout the film in a way that Nic becomes dissonant from the role of
mother.
As the man in the relationship, Nic performatively embodies a dominant, masculine fatherly figure
(Fox 4). In postulating a masculinized identity, she reinscribes heteronormative conventions. This is
established early

Due to its success in Desert Storm and subsequent conflicts, it is now the attack helicopter of choice

The Myth Of White People
The notion of white people has made a lasting impression in history both by their greatest
achievements but also their long history with slavery. So much so, that many believe that there is
everything to know about white people and giving them more attention than needed be was
ethnocentric. In reality the idea and history of white peopleis very much unexplored. For a racethat
predominately have made breakthroughs in the sciences, it is relatively unknown of their past.
Understanding the origins of this race would help immensely into why white people came to the
understanding and acceptance that they were the superior race. Before whiteness was made into a
racial category there was no such race or society named as white.... Show more content on

Winckelmann s fascination with Greek beauty created a new white aesthetic to what in modern
times call white people. Greek statues of the gods were carved in marble and people saw this
whiteness as a beauty ideal of the Greeks for which they hold great respect towards them for
their intellect. Race was shaping into a physical appearance. Racial identity Caucasian was deep
seated in the book of Johann Friedrich Blumenbach, On the Natural Variety of Mankind, he saw
it necessary to rank skin color hierarchically. At the top was the white people who he named
Caucasian. A Caucasian had rosy cheeks, white skin and other features were listed. He was a
scientist, so the concept of beauty was certified a racial trait and being Caucasian was the beauty
ideal, this idea has adhered to this term throughout all these years. Being Caucasian was a name
that Blumenbach attached whiteness to, mysteriously enough they were not originally Caucasian.
Caucasian was the name for people who lived in Caucasus, ergo it is odd that these Europeans
wanted to call themselves that when they were not even from that area. The intriguing part of this
whole decision to name whiteness a race is that European scholars were so assured and self
centered that their unawareness of what they have done would be later reflected in later years.
Racial hierarchy was the dominant form of classifying individuals in societies. The odalisques

A. The government should not define racial categories. My personal belief is all humans are
connected regardless of race. Pigment colors can be altered by mutations or genetic disorders. The

Catholic Church Reformation Essay
To understand the history of the Protestant Church and the Reformation, it is first important to
understand that one of the positions that claims the Catholic Church is apostolic succession. This
simply means that they claim to be the sole authority over all other churches and denominations
because they support the entire line of Roman Catholic Popes back to back centuries, to the apostle
Peter. From their point of view, it gives the Catholic Churcha unique authority which puts it above
all other denominations or church. According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, this apostolic
succession is only found in the Catholic Church and no other church can not validly claim it.
It is because of this apostolic succession that the Roman Catholic Church claims to have the sole
authority to interpret Scripture and to establish doctrine, and also supports having a supreme leader,
the Pope, who is infallible (without error) when he speaks ex cathedra that is to say in the exercise
of his ministry as pastor and teacher of all Christians. Thus, from the perspective of Roman Catholic
teaching or traditions of the Roman Catholic Church, since they come from the Pope, are endowed
with infallibility and an authority equal to that of the Scriptures them same. This is one of the
major differences between Roman Catholics and Protestants, and one of the fundamental reasons
for the Protestant Reformation.
Of course, the Roman Catholics are not the only ones to try to claim unique authority

How Do Children Learn For Restrict Overgeneralization...
How do children learn to restrict overgeneralization errors of syntactic structure?
As part of language acquisition children make overgeneralisations. Conventionally, the importance
in describing the process has been on how children go further than their original utterance and draw
out the consistencies that will allow them to produce and comprehend an unlimited number of new
sentences. However, in some instances it can be seen that children can overgeneralise, causing them
to produce grammars and sentences that contain both correct and incorrect constructions
(Bowerman, 1988).
According to Chomsky (1980) children have an innate language acquisition device (LAD). One of
the most well known overgeneralisations is the overuse of the ed ... Show more content on

In overcoming overgeneralisation errors Braine (1971) made the assumption that negative evidence
is essential to revise the predictions that children have originally made. A number of longitudinal
studies of naturalistic data (Chouinard and Clark, 2003) show that caregivers reconstruct some
ungrammatical structures produced by children, which often causes the child to repeat the
reconstructed structure in the future. However, this cannot be the only mechanism that is
restricting these overgeneralisation errors.
One of the major generativist proposals was the semantic verb class hypothesis (Pinker 1989);
founded on the observation that

The American Dream By John Steinbeck
The American Dream is the ideology that each American believes. In the 1930 s they thought they
could obtain anything they wanted if they put in significant effort, hard work, and had motivation.
This dream is something that the immigrants from Europe heard of before they came over. They
wanted this so bad that they left their home and their families to find their personal American
Dream. It didn t come easy for everyone at first because of the discrimination and prejudice against
them. But with their mindsets that this is something they wanted and wouldn t stop until they
reached it, many Americans found their dream. Each person had their unique goal. Some wanted to
build a house and live in the country. Others wanted to invent something and become a millionaire.
In the novel, each character had their own dream as well.
For example, Lennie and George wanted to have their own farm and live in freedom. Curley s
wife wanted to become a movie star and Candy latches on to Lennie and George s dream. Each
character makes up for the lack of their dream by compensating it with something else. The
American Dream can be extraordinary or simple, depending on whose it is.
The modern day American Dream is far different from the dream in the 1930 s. Today the dream is
the white picket fence house and family. The ideal lifestyle is to be moderately wealthy and live
in a big home with a nice yard in a nice neighborhood. It would have a white picket fence around
the yard with a dog and a

In the past decade, a number of PPDM techniques have been proposed to facilitate users in
performing data mining tasks in privacy sensitive environments. Agrawal and Srikant [3], as well as
Lindell and Pinkas [63], were the first to introduce the notion of privacy preserving under data
mining applications. Existing PPDM techniques can be classified into two broad categories: data
perturbation and data distribution. Data Perturbation Methods: With these methods, values of
individual data records are perturbed by adding random noise in such a way that the distribution of
the perturbed data look very deferent from that of the actual data. After such a transformation, the
perturbed data is sent to the Miner to perform the desired data mining tasks. Agrawal and Srikant
[3] proposed the first data perturbation technique that could be used to build a decision tree
classifier. A number of randomization based methods were later proposed [6, 33, 34, 73, 104]. Data
perturbation techniques are not, however, applicable to semantically secure encrypted data. They
also fail to produce accurate data mining results due to the addition of statistical noises to the data.
Data Distribution Methods: These methods assume that the dataset is partitioned

Candide Satire Analysis
An Analysis of Satire in Candide Man is plagued with his own desire, leading to corruption and
hypocrisy that pollutes the known world. In this world, men are met with tragedy, ranging from
natural or Godly devastation, to the constructs he places on himself and to which he forces himself
to conform. However, many of them still refuse to acknowledge this adversity, pursuing blind
optimism. In his satirical novel, Candide, Voltaire exposes the foolishness of men and highlights the
self destructive nature of the world, thereby challenging the concept of blind optimism and arguing
that one can be aware of their world and still enjoy life in it. Most specifically, Voltaire criticizes
German philosopher Gottfried Leibnizs through his own Leibnizian optimism, that this is the best
of all possible worlds. Voltaire successfully refutes such ideology through the journey of his
naive adventurer, Candide, and eventually settles that one can lead a happy life without being
blindly optimistic. Early on Candide faces extreme adversity in the comfortable world he had
previously believed to be the best of all possible worlds . Under the misguidance of Master
Pangloss, whose idiotic philosophy, or metaphysico theologo cosmolonigology , which makes
Candide s world and castle the best of all that exists, giving Candide a sense of fallacious
optimism (12). Pangloss s philosophy, or lack thereof, represents the philosophy of Leibniz, and
through exaggerating the erroneous logic of Pangloss, such as that the nose is formed for
spectacles; therefore we wear spectacles. The legs are visibly designed for stockings; therefore
we wear stockings. , Voltaire implicitly mocks and ridicules Leibniz s philosophy, painting him as
a pseudo intellectual and giving him a demeaning caricature as a wild and far fetched idiot (12).
Later into the book, Pangloss finds his logic being tested through trials such as getting infected with
syphilis (19), and being unsuccessfully hung by the Inquisition (28). These interactions are meant to
undermine and reject Pangloss s philosophy, or rather Leibniz s philosophy, by juxtaposing the idea
that this world is the best of all possible, with extreme tragedy and downfall. Alongside this, the fact

Opportunity Recognition
Journal #1 Opportunity recognition can mean different things to different people, but to me it

But in reality it means proactively brainstorming a new business venture or expansion idea. (Neil

A Comparison Of Ancient Greek And Roman Civilization
Throughout History many civilizations have rose and fallen but we will be analyzing Greek
and Roman Civilization. Many people view the Romans as a copy cat empire compared to the
Greek because they modeled so many things after the Greeks, for myself, it would be correct to
assume this were true. At first during the colonial age or era, Romans and Greek heavily
influenced one another which one had engaged in trade at the Black Sea the surrounding
Mediterranean areas. Trading between the two nations was very successful due to the safety of
Roman Military presence. Over time, the Romans had adapted many of the Greeks practices
and believes. This is one of the main reasons that Roman could be seen as a copy cat of Ancient
Greece. Ancient Greece and Rome both had used agriculture. However, Rome did not have much
problems with production of food through agriculture like the Greeks did. Both of them had
produced products like wheat, but the former, Greece, had failed to produce a good amount of
wheat because Romans had far superior farming techniques. Instead of having a good production
of wheat, the Greeks had substituted wheat for olive oil hence why many people think of olive oil
coming from Greece. Both nations had heavily relied on slaves as well. How could a nation
become so successful with running the government, thinking about important ideals, or enjoying
themselves if they had to worry about how they were going to get fed? Roman slaves were a little

Quotes That Show Bravery In Odysseus
Throughout the Odyssey, the Greek hero Odysseus show bravery, which, I think, is the most
important trait for a hero to exhibit. The first episode in which Odysseus shows bravery is in the
episode New Coasts and Poseidon s son. When Odysseus is stuck in the cave with Polyphemus
Odysseus knew that they need to find a way out so they were? going to blind the giant. Odysseus
was going to stick a spear into the eye of the giant Polyphemus. Odysseus could have stayed in the
back lines and had his men do it for him, but instead he was there to spear the Giant. This shows the
trait bravery
The Second episode in which Odysseus shows bravery is the episode Sea Perils and defeat.

Proposed Merger Of Us Airways And American Airlines
INTEROFFICE MEMORANDUM

DIVISION, DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE
FROM:JULIAN HOFFMAN, ECONOMIC ANALYST
SUBJECT:PROPOSED MERGER OF US AIRWAYS AND AMERICAN AIRLINES
DATE:JULY 15, 2013 Executive Summary
This memo is in response to your request for an analysis of the economic implications of the
potential merger of US Airways Group and the AMR Corporation (parent company of American
Airlines), plans for which were announced in February of this year. While US Airways Group is
currently operating normally, AMR Corporation is under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection due to
a lack of profit, putting it in a precarious business situation. This proposed merger is AMR
Corporation s proposed path out of bankruptcy, and one which both airlines claim could result in
more than $1.5 billion in additional revenues and cost savings on an annual basis. (Wall Street
Journal, 2012)
This proposed merger would create the largest airline in the United States by market share, with a
combined 21.2% of the domestic market using pre merger market share levels (see Figure 1). The
proposed merger would also bring the total number of major domestic airlines down to four: Delta,
United, Southwest and the proposed new airline. These major domestic carriers would combine to
control roughly 69% of the market, a dominant position.
Any thorough economic analysis of the proposed merger has to focus in on this critical issue: the

Lindberg Baby Case Study
The case of the Lindberg baby was a national kidnapping case that involved all components of the
criminal justice system. It was about a famous Aviator names Charles Lindbergh, whose 20 month
old baby was kidnapped from his mansion near Hopewell, New Jersey on the night of March 1,
1932. With the help of the three criminal justicesystems (the police, courts, and corrections) the
guilty party was able to be identified and appropriately sentenced by the American criminal
justice system for his wrong doing. In the following paragraphs the actual Lindberg case will not
be discussed, but rather each of the components of the American criminal justice system and
their role in this case will be looked at. When the New Jersey State Police received a telephone
call on March 1, 1932 at 11:30pm notifying them of the Lindbergh baby being kidnapped, they
went to the Lindbergh mansion to start their investigation. Part of the responsibility of the police
is to look for clues and evidence to determine exactly what happened. While conducting an
investigation of the baby s nursey they found a ransom note asking for $50,000, scratches on a
window, and chisel gouges were found that indicated where the shutter was pried open. The police
interviewed and questioned everyone in the home from Mr. Mrs. Lindbergh, to their servants, the
nurse and nurse s boyfriend. The New Jersey State Police had to uphold their responsibility to keep
the public safe and find the perpetrator (Schmallager, 2015).

Essay on Growing Up in San Francisco- Personal Narrative
Growing Up in San Francisco Personal Narrative Although I was born in Salem, Oregon, my
earliest memories are from San Francisco, California. My parents came to California to start over
and find a better life. For a while we lived on a bus parked in front of a friend s house. When I
was three years old, we moved to Potrero Hill, an area of low income housing projects in the big
city. A very famous man, O.J. Simpson, grew up there, but that was before my time. Potrero Hill
was a bad neighborhood, so bad that you could not get a pizza delivered there and forget about

My family was one of the few white families around. This made the struggle to survive the
neighborhood even harder than it was for others. It was a reverse racism I was teased because I
am white. Still, it did not make me prejudiced at all. My godmother was black and most of my
friends were black. I used to beg my godmother, Deanna, to put my hair in corn rolls, tiny braids
with beads on the end. It would take hours and was very painful, but I took the pain in order to fit in.
One of my best friends was Theresa, a Vietnamese girl. I ate at her house often and I absolutely
loved the food. My favorite was rice soup. We took our shoes off by the door. We sat on the floor at
a short table to eat with chopsticks. My other best friend was Michael. He was half white and half
black. For that reason, he was often teased and beaten because he was a zebra (that is what the
black kids called him). At the time, I was four years old and Michael was seven. Although my
mother did not allow me to leave our block, we sneaked out anyway. He showed me the ropes,
the ins and outs of ghetto life. He showed me how things worked in the hood the dangerous
people to stay away from, like drug dealers, how to get around safely from one neighborhood to
another, and the neighborhoods to stay away from. We also played house, dolls, hide and go seek
all the childhood games while at the same time managing to learn and adapt to this no nonsense
environment.

Unnatural Causes
Aundria McCadney Unnatural Causes Not just a paycheck This video made a lot of sense to
me because not having a job can stress out you all types of ways. If a person has no source of
income, no provide food, have shelter, and pay bills this causes stress. The health disparities in
this video are from the employees being laid off, more ER visit was made from the stress which
causes chronic diseases to form. The employees had to watch their expenses and buy cheaper
food or find another way to work but for lower income. What is the job status of all employees
that got laid off? Did the employees find other work? Did they have to settle for a lower income
job? Some of their programs consist of employment fairs now, the unemployment checks, and in
the video if they were going to school they received more money. Place Matters In this video
where you live at is very important for access to healthy foods and to have a clean environment.
When a family is in a bad environment and no access to go to a market this is a set up to have
chronic health problems to occur later on. In lower class neighborhoods the video provided
information that tobacco, fast food, and liquor is easy to find rather than a fresh market or
grocery store. There are poor ventilation systems made in the homes and if a child has asthma it
increases hospital visits. This puts stress on the parents with more money and lack of sleep. I

Pride And Prejudice Social Class
Should being in a different social class have an effect on how you feel about someone? Even if
the person has a pure heart, but low in social status? Jane Austen outlines in Pride and Prejudice
the substances of social class, pride, and women s rights. Austen satirizes the social standing of the
upper classes and how they treated people of the lower class. How the people in the eighteenth
century and also Pride and Prejudicewere split into categories by what they have or what they know
are very similar.
In Pride and Prejudice, Austen describes to the reader how women were treated differently from
men; whether it was in education, the workforce, or politically. Women typically did not have an
education in the eighteenth century, as for Elizabeth and her sisters, they were among the girls
who was not able to attend school nor had a governess. Elizabeth may not have had any real
teaching, but she learned a lot from reading in an interrogating conversation with Lady Catherine
about her education, Eliza says, . . . such of us as wished to learn, never wanted the means. We

society. Lady Catherine, Darcy s prideful aunt, played a major role in the novel. She is in no way a

Roman Response To The Messenger
The Theatre in Ancient Rome contained much depth and meaning within its stories. By exploring
the deeper connections between the words and actions of characters, the audience receives social
commentary on the issues that occur in real life, such as whether or not fate exists, and what it
means for humankind if it does or does not. Furthermore, the characters within the plays create
greater meanings through their words by connecting them to the overarching themes and actions in
the plays. Through the analysis of the various characters words, one can often find quandaries that
relate to one s own questions about life, morality, society, and the universe.
The character of the Messenger is prevalent throughout the plays of ancient Rome. Typically, their
job is to bring tragic news, often to the main or one of the main characters in a play. They are also
often hesitant to share such news with the person they deliver it to because they are usually very
powerful and any horrendous news could cause that person to abuse their power or seek
vengeance, and they might feel that they will be punished for delivering bad news. Sometimes the
news is the loss of a loved one, which causes horrible grief for the other character. The response to
the Messenger s speech often gives the audience insight into the mind of the other character while

A focused cost leadership strategy according to Ireland et al (2006) is an action plan the firm
develops to produce goods and services for a narrow market segment at the lowest cost . IKEA
focuses on applying the techniques needed to achieve this cost leadership such as bulk buying,
economical sources of supplies, low cost logistics and store location while at the same time
concentrating on understanding and satisfying the needs.
Although it is a cost leader, IKEA also offers some differentiated features that appeal to its target
customers, including its unique furniture designs, in store playrooms for children, wheelchairs for
customer use, free buggies, reasonably priced restaurants and cafes and extended hours making
shopping at IKEA an experience. Thus, IKEA focused cost leadership strategy also includes some
differentiated features with its low cost products thereby making it a hybrid strategy. (Hitt et al,
2009: 121).
Part of keeping costs down IKEA strategically located its global distribution retailing network near
container ports and major truck and rail routes. In most instances, they own the large stores but in
order to be flexible and adaptable to penetrate new markets they also facilitate franchises where
there are risks to entry due to unfamiliarity or hostility to the IKEA concept. Their stores have been
described as theme parks masquerading as a furniture outlet (Margonelli, 2002: 112)

Compare and Contrast Essay of Rikki Tikki Tavi
Many people assume that the book and movie of the same story are always very similar, but they
are incorrect. In my comparison of the short story Rikki tikki tavi by Rudyard Kipling and the
movie of Rikki tikki tavi, I found them to be rather different. There were many minor differences,
but the three main topics in the short story that clearly differentiate it from the movie are the
setting, the character traits, and the use of humor. The setting in the movie differs from the setting
in the short story in a few ways. The setting in the movie dives into larger detail in many of the
scenes such as in the beginning flood scene. The flood scene setting in the movie reveals an eerie,
strong, storm with a flood that resembles a river and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From the very beginning, the character traits in the movie differ from those portrayed in the
short story. The ways in which they differ include the various switched roles of characters and
other aspects including age and clothing. One of the switched roles is right in the beginning of
the movie when the father lifts up Rikki from the sand, whereas in the short story the mother
picks him up. Another switched role would be when Darzee s wife explains what happened to
their baby egg that was eaten by Nag, but in the short story Darzee does the explaining. One last
switched role I came across was how Nag is the instigator who wanted to take over the garden, but
in the story it is Nagaina. Some other differences include the age of Teddy and the clothing of the
family. In the short story, Rudyard Kiplingcreates Teddy as a young toddler, using words such as
nursery to describe the room where he sleeps, but in the movie Teddy appears to be almost ten
years old with his fancy clothing and tall height. Surprisingly, the family in the movie wears very
nice, neat clothing. This is surprising because of the way Rudyard Kipling describes the setting.
With sand, dirt, and a garden, you would presume that it would be a humid climate, which would
result in the wearing of sandals and shorts. However, in the movie

What Does The Lamb And The Tyger Mean
The Lamb and the Tyger with innocence, religion, and coming of age.
On the surface the Lamb and the Tyger seem to be two separate poems with two separate
meanings. But in reality these two poems are connected and share a similar message. While they
are together and have sort of hidden meanings they also can tell the same story, just different parts.
Examining closer you can see concepts of creation, ageing, and art The lamb is of course a child and
the lamb are a representation of a child s wonder. The child asks the lamb who made it. This
represents a childlike wonder that every child experiences, but the fact that the child has a simple
and sure answer shows that the child does not question many aspects of the world around them. As

Both the poems represent the different aspects of god. The Tyger is mentioned mentioned as
shining bright but as the poem progresses it tells us that the Tyger is very dangerous and when
you compare the Lamb and the Tyger it seems as though they as say, if god could create
something as sweet and pure as a lamb then why would he create something as destructive as a
Tyger. This is why the Tyger is paired with fire in the poem. The fire is a destructive force that
everyone fears. The fire is also very powerful. This is why the Tyger was made in the furnace,
because just like the fire the Tyger is fierce and dangerous. The person reading the poem even
seems confused and even a little tramaised at the Tyger, asking themselves, oh what chain and oh
what hammer . The speaking is distraught wondering why the Tyger even exists, because it is so
deadly. It is hear where the child in the Lamb is grown. The child went from being very innocent
and having the answer of creation to having nothing but questions, asking who made this Tyger.
With this we can assume that the author intended for the child in the Lamb and the adult in the
Tyger to be the same character in different stages of their

Jk Simmons And Character Clash
Tyler Christiansen/ Section A/ Whiplash/ Peter Stone
A young actor can learn a lot from the performances of JK Simmons and Miles Teller in Whiplash.
Throughout the film each actor clearly had an understanding of not only who their character was,
but what their character s overall objective was. Building character is essential to a great
performance and by watching this film I could easily tell each actor did the proper preparation it
took to get a better understanding who Fletcher and Andrew were. These actors are a great
example of what we, as actors, should be striving for when we begin to analyze a new character.
The chemistry between Simmons and Teller on screen was incredible, and I believe a huge
portion of that was due to their comprehension of their characters. A factor that played a great part
between these two characters was the idea of high status and low status. Fletcher is clearly the
high status character, holding the power to make or break Andrew s life long dream. Simmons
plays this part of Fletcher quite clearly through his physical and vocal choices. His movement is
very meticulous, almost as if he s constantly thinking about every move he makes. His posture is

Political Absolutism In The 18th Century
Have you ever wondered how we progressed from an absolute monarchy in most countries to a more
centralized government in which the people have a voice? The history in which we have been
given tells us how political absolutism ruled for many years and then demolished. Political
Absolutism was a period in Western history in which king(s)/queen(s) had absolute rule over the

The need of the people outweighed the power of the King. After the French Revolution, which was
a revolution to replace the old regime and replace it with a more democratic society in which the
inalienable rights of the people were protected and the church and the government would be
separate entities, showed the effects of findings in his writings. Because Locke asserted that every
man is entitled to the rights of life, liberty and property [basic necessitates that one has] (Locke,
John.1821), the revolution had contextual evidence for their decision(s). The old regime was out
and in turn, the people established a constitutional monarchy in which the person in power had to
consult with legislative in order to legally make decisions. Moreover, the people s voices were
heard and a limited government was formed based on their needs. Locke gave a foundational
base in which individuals could rebel and in turn, it created a more democratic society, which
Locke defended upon. The people used Locke s theories of inalienable rights and sovereignty to
achieve their goals. Although the people did not achieve every goal, they were able to demolish the

Susan Atkins Research Paper
Susan Atkins was born on May 7, 1948 in California. She had a really difficult childhood. She
has two brothers, one older and one younger. She was very self conscious and quiet. She always
felt unloved by her parents because they favored her brothers more. Allegedly, Susan was molested
by her older brother, his friends, her father s friends, and friends of the family. She grew up in a
middle class neighborhood. She was in her school s glee club and church choir. Growing up, both
of her parents were alcoholics. Her motherdied from cancer when she was fourteen. She and her
brothers were cared for by her grandparents. Her relationship with her father started falling apart as
a result from his drinking habits. They worsened after his wife passed away.
Susan had to take on a job and her younger brother because her father left them. She could not
focus on school so she dropped out and took on a full time job. She was forced to move out of
her grandparents because there was not enough room. Her younger brother stayed while she had to
support herself. Her older brother joined the navy. During this time, she learned that stealing gave
her excitement. She moved to San Francisco when she was eighteen. It was very hard for her to
hold down a stable job. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Susan did not start committing serious crimes until she met the two escaped convicts. Together
they started committing armed robberies. She did have a very rough childhood, but everything
changed after that point. She continued to get worse and worse. She started selling drugs, which
she tried only when she was around people. This caused her to try many different hard drugs. She
then met Manson, which caused her life to downward spiral. She was constantly influenced by
him. She thought he really cared about her so she complied with anything he wanted, even if she
did not do want to do it. Manson had convinced her that all of the bad they were doing was actually

Texting And Driving Is A Good Thing Essay
We have all seen them, the people that come barreling down the road not knowing what s
happening because they are too busy looking at their phone. Texting and driving is one of the
most daring things people can do on the road now a days. It is a tragic practice in the United
States that needs to be stopped. It s taking many lives of peoples family and friends around the
United States today. This phenomenon of texting and driving exists and it isn t a good thing.
Although many people would agree that texting and driving isn t a safe act many still do it.
Most people feel discluded from the texting while driving danger and believe that they are safe
drivers while texting. In a survey done by National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
(NHTSA), 55 percent of young adults thought that it was easy to text and drive. Texting while
driving is a terrible thing to be doing, it impairs your driving and leaves you not paying attention
to the main task at hand, yet it is becoming more and more prevalent across the United States. If
you think that you aren t part of the problem cause you can text and drive safely, you are wrong.
Texting and many other forms of distracted driving such as eating, answering calls, and listening
to loud music can be detrimental to how you drive. Of all these texting is arguably the most
dangerous. Those who feel it s not dangerous to text and drive think they are able to multi task
good enough behind the wheel to be able to text. Well, this is

Symbolism, Imagery and Allegory in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and A Streetcar Named Desire
Tennessee Williams said, in the foreword to Camino Real, a symbol in a play has only one
legitimate purpose, which is to say a thing more directly and simply and beautifully than it could
be said in words. Symbolism is used, along with imagery and allegory to that effect in both Cat on
a Hot Tin Roof and A Streetcar Named Desire. Both plays tend to share the same kinds of symbols
and motifs; sometimes they achieve the same meaning, sometimes not. It is possible that Williams
took elements from A Streetcar Named Desire to make Cat on a Hot Tin Roof a success. After the
success of A Streetcar Named Desire, Williams next 2 plays The... Show more content on

This dialogue is symbolic of Brick s decision to take an ideal past over an uncertain future. The
`click in Brick s head is his escape; it echoes the click of the phone when he hung up on Skipper.
It means that he doesn t have to face the truth anymore just like he didn t with Skipper. The
alcohol leads to the click and the click leads to escape. At the end of the play, Maggie removes
both of Brick s crutches until he satisfies her physically in trying for a baby. This is symbolically
forcing Brick to face the future before wallowing in the past.
In A Streetcar Named Desire, one of the first things Blanche does when arriving at Elysian
Fields is look around for some liquor (Streetcar p.120), just as she looks for an escape from her
own past. This symbolism puts new meaning in Blanche s line [looking down at the glass, which
shakes in her hand]: You re all I ve got in the world, and your not glad to see me! it leaves one
wondering whether she is talking to Stella or to the liquor at this point.
Both Brick and Blanche have idealised their pasts beyond reach. Brick sums this up, stating,
those high hurdles have gotten too high for me, now. (Cat p. 53) This imagery of the high
hurdles is symbolic of the unattainable past Brick strives for. Boxhill believes that Brick saw
Skipper as a symbol of a marriage of pure souls (Boxhill p.113). Griffin sums up Brick s

SUPERFLY and DUTCHMAN Lights, camera, and action!! A popular phrase noted throughout the film and cinematic industry, but to directors, actors, and viewers of African Americanor Black Cinema this famous phrase helped jumpstart a movement throughout the black culture. With this notion provided by Hall the underlying victory in Superfly not only for the black culture, but society as a whole, as we remember the popularity not only by black culture, but by white and Latino as well. As Priest rises over adversity, and takes his success, not only does he maintain a financial edge, but one that kicks butt towards the end of the movie. Yet, it is this same notion that is the downfall for Clay in The Dutchman . As a woman of thirty, with no sexual virtue who is mentally ill, Lula in the story is the picture of what white society has deemed invaluable and powerless. However, when opposed to Clay, a young man with and education, the traditional would be image of success and normalcy, ironically Lula becomes all powerful (authoritative), because of her race ( The Dutchman oppression, 2009). It is Lula s absolute command of the other passengers that shows Baracka s stance that race is the ultimate determining factor in society. I divide the following sections into individual discussions of each cultural text to reveal the cogs within each site. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Reinforcing The Gender Binary Jules and Nic are slightly ambiguous representations of butch and femme yet the film overtly reinforces binary gender roles in its homonormative depiction of the family. Nic presents a more masculine identity: she has messy, cropped hair, wears little makeup, and wears relaxed fitting jeans and button down dress shirts. She is quick to anger, aggressive, a workaholic doctor, and operates more on conservatism and logic. Nic is both the disciplinarian and breadwinner in the family. In contrast, Jules is more visually feminized. She has long, smooth red hair, wears sexy lacy lingerie, and flowy or fitted t shirts. Free spirit Jules is a more liberal. She is the nurturing parent emotionally sensitive, compassionate and craves intimacy, characteristics that construct the femme (Martin 1996). These characteristics that construct Jules are antithetical to masculinity (Crewe 2015). These roles suggest that Nic is the man and Jules is the woman. This homonormative discourse continues throughout the film in a way that Nic becomes dissonant from the role of mother. In reality the idea and history of white peopleis very much unexplored. For a racethat predominately have made breakthroughs in the sciences, it is relatively unknown of their past. Racial identity Caucasian was deep seated in the book of Johann Friedrich Blumenbach, On the Natural Variety of Mankind, he saw it necessary to rank skin color hierarchically. At the top was the white people who he named Caucasian. A Caucasian had rosy cheeks, white skin and other features were listed. He was a scientist, so the concept of beauty was certified a racial trait and being Caucasian was the beauty ideal, this idea has adhered to this term throughout all these years. Being Caucasian was a name that Blumenbach attached whiteness to, mysteriously enough they were not originally Caucasian. Caucasian was the name for people who lived in Caucasus, ergo it is odd that these Europeans wanted to call themselves that when they were not even from that area. The intriguing part of this whole decision to name whiteness a race is that European scholars were so assured and self centered that their unawareness of what they have done would be later reflected in later years. • 11. Catholic Church Reformation Essay To understand the history of the Protestant Church and the Reformation, it is first important to understand that one of the positions that claims the Catholic Church is apostolic succession. This simply means that they claim to be the sole authority over all other churches and denominations because they support the entire line of Roman Catholic Popes back to back centuries, to the apostle Peter. From their point of view, it gives the Catholic Churcha unique authority which puts it above all other denominations or church. According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, this apostolic succession is only found in the Catholic Church and no other church can not validly claim it. It is because of this apostolic succession that the Roman Catholic Church claims to have the sole authority to interpret Scripture and to establish doctrine, and also supports having a supreme leader, the Pope, who is infallible (without error) when he speaks ex cathedra that is to say in the exercise of his ministry as pastor and teacher of all Christians. Thus, from the perspective of Roman Catholic teaching or traditions of the Roman Catholic Church, since they come from the Pope, are endowed with infallibility and an authority equal to that of the Scriptures them same. As part of language acquisition children make overgeneralisations. Conventionally, the importance in describing the process has been on how children go further than their original utterance and draw out the consistencies that will allow them to produce and comprehend an unlimited number of new sentences. However, in some instances it can be seen that children can overgeneralise, causing them to produce grammars and sentences that contain both correct and incorrect constructions (Bowerman, 1988). According to Chomsky (1980) children have an innate language acquisition device (LAD). One of the most well known overgeneralisations is the overuse of the ed ... • 13. The American Dream By John Steinbeck The American Dream is the ideology that each American believes. In the 1930 s they thought they could obtain anything they wanted if they put in significant effort, hard work, and had motivation. This dream is something that the immigrants from Europe heard of before they came over. They wanted this so bad that they left their home and their families to find their personal American Dream. It didn t come easy for everyone at first because of the discrimination and prejudice against them. But with their mindsets that this is something they wanted and wouldn t stop until they reached it, many Americans found their dream. Each person had their unique goal. Some wanted to build a house and live in the country. Others wanted to invent something and become a millionaire. In the novel, each character had their own dream as well. For example, Lennie and George wanted to have their own farm and live in freedom. Curley s wife wanted to become a movie star and Candy latches on to Lennie and George s dream. Each character makes up for the lack of their dream by compensating it with something else. The American Dream can be extraordinary or simple, depending on whose it is. The modern day American Dream is far different from the dream in the 1930 s. Today the dream is the white picket fence house and family. The ideal lifestyle is to be moderately wealthy and live in a big home with a nice yard in a nice neighborhood. It would have a white picket fence around the yard with a dog and a ... Existing PPDM techniques can be classified into two broad categories: data perturbation and data distribution. After such a transformation, the perturbed data is sent to the Miner to perform the desired data mining tasks. • 18. Candide Satire Analysis An Analysis of Satire in Candide Man is plagued with his own desire, leading to corruption and hypocrisy that pollutes the known world. In this world, men are met with tragedy, ranging from natural or Godly devastation, to the constructs he places on himself and to which he forces himself to conform. However, many of them still refuse to acknowledge this adversity, pursuing blind optimism. In his satirical novel, Candide, Voltaire exposes the foolishness of men and highlights the self destructive nature of the world, thereby challenging the concept of blind optimism and arguing that one can be aware of their world and still enjoy life in it. Most specifically, Voltaire criticizes German philosopher Gottfried Leibnizs through his own Leibnizian optimism, that this is the best of all possible worlds. Voltaire successfully refutes such ideology through the journey of his naive adventurer, Candide, and eventually settles that one can lead a happy life without being blindly optimistic. Early on Candide faces extreme adversity in the comfortable world he had previously believed to be the best of all possible worlds . Under the misguidance of Master Pangloss, whose idiotic philosophy, or metaphysico theologo cosmolonigology , which makes Candide s world and castle the best of all that exists, giving Candide a sense of fallacious optimism (12). Pangloss s philosophy, or lack thereof, represents the philosophy of Leibniz, and through exaggerating the erroneous logic of Pangloss, such as that the nose is formed for spectacles; therefore we wear spectacles. The legs are visibly designed for stockings; therefore we wear stockings. , Voltaire implicitly mocks and ridicules Leibniz s philosophy, painting him as a pseudo intellectual and giving him a demeaning caricature as a wild and far fetched idiot (12). Later into the book, Pangloss finds his logic being tested through trials such as getting infected with syphilis (19), and being unsuccessfully hung by the Inquisition (28). These interactions are meant to undermine and reject Pangloss s philosophy, or rather Leibniz s philosophy, by juxtaposing the idea that this world is the best of all possible, with extreme tragedy and downfall. At first during the colonial age or era, Romans and Greek heavily influenced one another which one had engaged in trade at the Black Sea the surrounding Mediterranean areas. Trading between the two nations was very successful due to the safety of Roman Military presence. Over time, the Romans had adapted many of the Greeks practices and believes. This is one of the main reasons that Roman could be seen as a copy cat of Ancient Greece. Ancient Greece and Rome both had used agriculture. However, Rome did not have much problems with production of food through agriculture like the Greeks did. Both of them had produced products like wheat, but the former, Greece, had failed to produce a good amount of wheat because Romans had far superior farming techniques. Instead of having a good production of wheat, the Greeks had substituted wheat for olive oil hence why many people think of olive oil coming from Greece. • 31. Lindberg Baby Case Study The case of the Lindberg baby was a national kidnapping case that involved all components of the criminal justice system. It was about a famous Aviator names Charles Lindbergh, whose 20 month old baby was kidnapped from his mansion near Hopewell, New Jersey on the night of March 1, 1932. With the help of the three criminal justicesystems (the police, courts, and corrections) the guilty party was able to be identified and appropriately sentenced by the American criminal justice system for his wrong doing. In the following paragraphs the actual Lindberg case will not be discussed, but rather each of the components of the American criminal justice system and their role in this case will be looked at. When the New Jersey State Police received a telephone call on March 1, 1932 at 11:30pm notifying them of the Lindbergh baby being kidnapped, they went to the Lindbergh mansion to start their investigation. Part of the responsibility of the police is to look for clues and evidence to determine exactly what happened. While conducting an investigation of the baby s nursey they found a ransom note asking for $50,000, scratches on a window, and chisel gouges were found that indicated where the shutter was pried open. The police interviewed and questioned everyone in the home from Mr. Mrs. Lindbergh, to their servants, the nurse and nurse s boyfriend. The New Jersey State Police had to uphold their responsibility to keep the public safe and find the perpetrator (Schmallager, 2015). ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Essay on Growing Up in San Francisco- Personal Narrative Growing Up in San Francisco Personal Narrative Although I was born in Salem, Oregon, my earliest memories are from San Francisco, California. My parents came to California to start over and find a better life. For a while we lived on a bus parked in front of a friend s house. When I was three years old, we moved to Potrero Hill, an area of low income housing projects in the big city. A very famous man, O.J. Simpson, grew up there, but that was before my time. It would take hours and was very painful, but I took the pain in order to fit in. One of my best friends was Theresa, a Vietnamese girl. I ate at her house often and I absolutely loved the food. My favorite was rice soup. We took our shoes off by the door. We sat on the floor at a short table to eat with chopsticks. My other best friend was Michael. He was half white and half black. For that reason, he was often teased and beaten because he was a zebra (that is what the black kids called him). At the time, I was four years old and Michael was seven. By exploring the deeper connections between the words and actions of characters, the audience receives social commentary on the issues that occur in real life, such as whether or not fate exists, and what it means for humankind if it does or does not. Furthermore, the characters within the plays create greater meanings through their words by connecting them to the overarching themes and actions in the plays. Through the analysis of the various characters words, one can often find quandaries that relate to one s own questions about life, morality, society, and the universe. The character of the Messenger is prevalent throughout the plays of ancient Rome. Typically, their job is to bring tragic news, often to the main or one of the main characters in a play. They are also often hesitant to share such news with the person they deliver it to because they are usually very powerful and any horrendous news could cause that person to abuse their power or seek vengeance, and they might feel that they will be punished for delivering bad news. In my comparison of the short story Rikki tikki tavi by Rudyard Kipling and the movie of Rikki tikki tavi, I found them to be rather different. There were many minor differences, but the three main topics in the short story that clearly differentiate it from the movie are the setting, the character traits, and the use of humor. The setting in the movie differs from the setting in the short story in a few ways. The setting in the movie dives into larger detail in many of the scenes such as in the beginning flood scene. From the very beginning, the character traits in the movie differ from those portrayed in the short story. The ways in which they differ include the various switched roles of characters and other aspects including age and clothing. One of the switched roles is right in the beginning of the movie when the father lifts up Rikki from the sand, whereas in the short story the mother picks him up. Another switched role would be when Darzee s wife explains what happened to their baby egg that was eaten by Nag, but in the short story Darzee does the explaining. One last switched role I came across was how Nag is the instigator who wanted to take over the garden, but in the story it is Nagaina. Some other differences include the age of Teddy and the clothing of the family. In the short story, Rudyard Kiplingcreates Teddy as a young toddler, using words such as nursery to describe the room where he sleeps, but in the movie Teddy appears to be almost ten years old with his fancy clothing and tall height. Surprisingly, the family in the movie wears very nice, neat clothing. This is surprising because of the way Rudyard Kipling describes the setting. Throughout the film each actor clearly had an understanding of not only who their character was, but what their character s overall objective was. Building character is essential to a great performance and by watching this film I could easily tell each actor did the proper preparation it took to get a better understanding who Fletcher and Andrew were. These actors are a great example of what we, as actors, should be striving for when we begin to analyze a new character. The chemistry between Simmons and Teller on screen was incredible, and I believe a huge portion of that was due to their comprehension of their characters. A factor that played a great part between these two characters was the idea of high status and low status. Fletcher is clearly the high status character, holding the power to make or break Andrew s life long dream. Simmons plays this part of Fletcher quite clearly through his physical and vocal choices.
