1. February 2017
Message from Dr. Lisa Hale
2017 President
Our chapter is going through a few
changes this year. They all lead to
thriving! Stay tuned for the outline of the
new membership structure. It’s coming
later this week. We are building a
foundation this year for a professional
organization that thrives, is antifragile!
We, the leadership team, are committed
to providing our fellow members a
platform from which to thrive as coaches.
Our world needs us more now than ever.
We coaches can be the beacons to guide
our clients to thrive now.
So, how do we amplify thriving?
February’s big idea is this:
Anti-Fragile.
Have you heard that term? It comes from a book by the same name
written by Nassim Nicholas Taleb.
Here is how it applies to coaching and to our chapter:
FRAGILE is the state of being wounded by, diminished by or
harmed by events we experience. These events can be external, or
they might be thoughts or feelings we have ourselves. We might say
about them: "I’m upset."
RESILIENT is the state of experiencing the wounding or injury
mentioned above, but getting through it – rising again. We might
say about them: "I’m Ok."
ANTIFRAGILE is getting from the experiences mentioned above.
An event occurs – it shocks, wounds, upsets or even destroys
something precious. Being anti-fragile we ask, what may I gain from

2. this experience? How can I use this for my upliftment? We might
say about them: "I’m thriving."
How do we get to and stay in that Thriving place?
Personally, I use my own coach to help me be antifragile. In fact,
I’ve come to believe that every coach is a better coach when we
have one of our own. It helps me be a beacon for my own clients to
find upliftment in their experiences as well. What do you do to stay
in the thriving zone?
We all, always, have the choice to find thriving in every situation.
That doesn’t mean there are no tears, no sadness, shock or grief.
Sometimes there is all of the above. When Antifragile is the
intention, however, we maneuver through the swamp with
tenderness and grace.
I love the phrase: "Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional."
Coaches are to be the beacons to guide our communities to thrive
now.
As always, I strongly invite you to share your thoughts, hopes, and
desires with your leadership team. You may email me at
Lisa@FocusedLeadershipConsulting.com if you’d like to share with
me directly.
To your continued antifragile thriving!
With love,

ICF-CO seeks your article submissions. Our members are our
greatest source of coaching expertise. And, we want our members

6-7pm - Special Interests Groups
7-9pm - Mini-Presentation and Main Speaker
"Direct Communication – Where Courage Meets Integrity"
Main Speaker: Micki McMillan
Special Interest Groups (SIGs) will be conducted from 6:00 -
6:50pm before the general meeting.
Location:
Lowry Conference Center | 1061 Akron Way, Building 697, Denver,
CO 80230
Direct Communication is an important competency associated with
coaching. At the same time, many coaches are appropriately
concerned with insinuating themselves into the client’s process
and/or agenda. Through this interactive program, participants will
learn techniques and practices that will enable them to live the
definition of coaching while courageously engaging in dialogue with
their clients.
In this interactive program, participants will:
• Relate the ICF Core Competency – Direct Communication to one’s
coaching practice.
• Identify when direct communication contradicts effective coaching
and when it supports effective coaching.
• Practice techniques to share the coach’s observations, intuitions,
thoughts and feelings to support their client’s learning. (PCC Direct
Communication Marker 1).
• Strike a balance between the coach "being right" about his/her
thoughts and observations and allowing the client to choose. (PCC
Direct Communication Marker 2).
• Practice the art of respectful interruption when in service of the
client. (PCC Direct Communication Marker 6).
About Our Speaker, Micki McMillan:
Micki McMillan is CEO and a founding
partner of Blue Mesa Group,
headquartered in Fort Collins.
Micki is an ICF MCC and PCC Assessor and
serves on the ICF Credentialing Task
Force. She is past president of ACTO, an
international organization that advances
excellence in coach training. She authored
the Transformational Coaching Program,
an ICF Accredited Coach Training Program
(ACTP). She serves on the Board of Directors for AAA Colorado.
Before launching her coaching career, Micki was the highest-ranking
4. female executive in operations for a Fortune 100 company. This role
taught her some of the specific challenges executives face in highly
competitive and constantly changing environments.

Company, Merck and Co. Inc., Yale University Health, UCHealth,
Royal Dutch Shell, and Providence Health & Services.

ICF-CO Mini-Presentation:
Presenter: Paul Duba
Topic: Disruption as a Precursor to Effective Communication
In this interactive experiential activity,
participants will explore the process of
balancing conflicting paradigms with
courage and integrity. Exploring
through a somatically-based approach,
we will move beyond our intellectual
perspectives to disrupt our habitual
ways of seeing, being, understanding,
and interacting, in order to hold
conflicting viewpoints. Holding multiple
perspectives makes for better coaching
and improved communications in
general, and is a skill that we can practice ourselves, and use with
our clients to cultivate more effective conversations.
