October 2017: ICF Colorado Newsletter
1. October 2017
Message from Dr. Lisa Hale
2017 President
What pain do you want to have in your
life?
What?!? You ask! I don’t want any pain!
You might be thinking. It is truly an odd
question isn’t it? Mostly as coaches, we
are seeking to help our clients reduce
their experience of pain, frustration, the "I
can’t" or "I don’t deserve" story. Yet, Mark
Manson (author) suggests that pain is
inevitable. So, why not be intentional
about what pain we wish to invite into our
lives? The way I heard this many years
ago from Brian Klemmer is "Pain is
inevitable, it’s the suffering that’s optional."
What does this even mean? Why choose pain? Why not simply try to
avoid all pain?
Manson also suggested that the mark of a fulfilling life, one of
meaning and purpose, is measured by the quality of problems that
we are engaged in solving.
Hmm. That got me thinking – how about you?
In relationships, there are none, zero, that proceed without some
degree of friction at times. If there is love, that friction can feel
quite painful. Yet, if the quality of relationship you are creating
constitutes a worthy objective, then that is a quality problem to
have. In other words, the pain comes from doing the work required
to create a high quality relationship! This is true in our personal
lives, our work lives, and in leadership too.
So the question really is: What are the quality problems you would
like to have in your life?
In our chapter we have some very high quality problems.
We are launching the CU-Denver / ICF pilot partnership for
leadership coaching. Some of our very high quality problems are

2. that we have considerable demand for the coaching and a large
number of excellent coaches stepping forward to participate. The
pain and the problem now is in crafting high-integrity processes for
selection. What this means is that there may be great capacity to
expand this sort of programming. To learn more about the pilot
program, click here.
We have an extraordinary conference in just over 1 month. We are
one of only three chapters in North America that put on a
conference of this sort, and the only one West of the Mississippi. We
strongly urge each of you to participate in making sure this
experience is not missed, by sharing this with your friends,
colleagues and clients - Click here to Register. The quality of this
conference, the sponsors and speakers are even more extraordinary
than we’ve had previously. We have the opportunity to have our
affiliation and membership of ICF-CO be a true feather in our caps
with this capstone event.
Our membership is extraordinary – one of the best quality problems
we face is meeting the diversity of needs for community,
professional development.
In your life, and practice, what are you committed to enough that
you are willing to solve high quality problems to see those
commitments realized?

Maria Nemeth, PhD, MCC
"The Negativity Bias: How to Deal with Difficult
Client Situations"
As coaches, we always hope that our
clients will greet our coaching with a sigh
of relief, enthusiasm, or acknowledgement
that we’re on the right track together.
However, what happens in the coaching
situation when clients become irritated or
confused? Or even angry that the
session(s) are not going the way they
would like them to go? You’re running into
the Negativity Bias.
In this session, Maria will share what she’s learned from 38 years of
working with coaches about how to turn a difficult situation from a
possible breakdown into a powerful breakthrough for your client.
Here’s what you’ll learn:
• What the Negativity Bias is and where it comes from.
7. •Some strategies for interacting with clients in the moment when
they are experiencing the Negativity Bias to help bring their creative
thinking back on line.
•A simple tool coaches can use immediately (for themselves and
their clients) to go past the Negativity Bias with ease.

ICF-CO Membership - Feedback
In the last month, the Board has reached out to you to get feedback on your experience
as an ICF-CO member. If you took the time to chat with a board member, THANK YOU!
We are continuing this effort because we want to have as many member conversations
as possible.
Here is a sampling of what we’ve learned so far...
What members like about our chapter:
• Annual conference
• Virtual presentations
10. • Monthly meetings, especially the longer presentations with Q&A
• CCEUs
• Warmth of membership
• Meeting other coaches
What is least liked about our chapter:
• Distance to monthly meetings
• Squeezing in short sessions before the longer session at the meetings
• Challenges around navigating the credentialing process and wanting more support
• Not enough networking with other coaches
Recommendations for the chapter:
• Make webinars free for members
• Add networking events for members to connect more deeply
• Give some attention to life coaching in the programming versus
focus on leadership, business and executive
• Include live coaching demonstrations
• Promote visibility and value of coaching in the area
• More emphasis on relationship building over technology
• New member orientation
If you have been contacted by a board member (and you should have)
and haven’t connected yet, please help make the conversation happen. Your voice is important!
Thanks again and enjoy your summer!
