Feature article Analysis
Jessica Hooker
The magazine of the feature article I have chosen to use is that of Q magazine and its March 2011 issue. The magazine have chosen to interview
this artist, due to his popularity and success with his former band Oasis in the music industry and also how he has a reputation of being some
what difficult. Therefore it would be interesting for the audience to read about how he acted and what he said in response to the interview. The
indie genre is reflected by the constant address of the artists past hit as well as the way the singer is dressed in a alternative and late 90’s type of
style. My DPS is not part of a regular feature in the magazine but an exclusive article for this specific issue. Therefore it would have particular
importance in the magazine.
The text is very informal with the language being used including slang as well as taboo language of swear words. This relates the younger
audience of the magazine and also shows the rebellious attitude of the artist and perhaps the magazine. Also the artists personality is
prominently shown through this language as of his lack of care of what he is saying. Also the article is fairly comedic due to the irrelevant talk
about the singers new sausage dog and relating her to Aretha Franklin due to its mood, actions and stare. This makes the article much more
relaxed and enjoyable for those of the targeted audience. Some of the references included would need some knowledge of the artist himself,
such as that of his music and previous lifestyle. However as the article also features on his upcoming word, previous knowledge is not necessarily
compulsory as of how it would be new news to everyone reading. There is a mixture of reported and direct speech throughout the text, which
also gives a 3rd person insight to the musician as well as making the article much more personal as it would seem as if the artist is talking to the
audience personally. Altogether the mode of address in the text presents a laid-back and relaxed tone of the magazine through the use of
informal and comical language.
The layout of this DPS, is presumably split in half, with the image of the artist being on the right hand side and the article and headline on the
left. This gives an equal amount of attention towards each of the components on the page. Columns are mainly used in the main text, as of it
being split into three columns in front of a large red ‘T’. This has no real large significance but adds some colour and interest into the page. The
image side of the DPS could also be seen as being in two columns with the picture being on one and the small tagline and name of the band
being included in the other, however this is not very uniformed and is not prominently seen as such. The pages layout is very neat and structured
and shows the uniformity and also possibly the slightly old fashioned nature of the article and magazine issue. There are around eight questions
and answers presented in the article and are also implied throughout the text as the writer reports of the events of the interview. There is a
quote of a reaction to Oasis splitting up and also a tagline for the article being a pull quote from it. This quote is quite comedic due to the use of
taboo language and also immediately grabs the attention of the reader due to there surprise of this language being included. There is no by line
featured showing the insignificance of the writer to this article. As well as this drop caps are also used to make the layout of the article much
more interesting than just a bunch of words on paper. The article is fairly long however, is an easy read for those who are just quickly picking up
the magazine to read or are on the go.
There is only one image featured on the page with it being a full body shot of the artist looking away from the camera with his head tilted
upwards, possibly to express an idea or a tone of superiority. The image is in colour and stands out against the plain white background of the
studio which the image was taken and also would attract readers just flicking through the magazine in the shop or after they have bought it. Due
to this being the image it gets majority of the attention on the page and also shows how the artist could be a very significant member of his
band, and could even have a solo career. There are only quotes and the name of the artists band featured around the image.
There are numbers featured at the outer corner of each of pages making it much easier to navigate around the magazine from the contents
page. These are featured in the footer of the page as well as the date of the issue. There however is no header apart from the quote of Alan
McGee about the artists previous band’s demise.
This article is taken from the
magazine Q and features about
the then upcoming talent of
singer songwriter Ed Sheeran.
They chose to interview due to
the recent success of his first hit
song A-Team, which was
number 1 at the time. This made
the article intersecting to
readers as they would have
knowledge and presumably
know the song from radio
stations and possibly from social
groups. The genre of indie and
popular chart music is reflected
throughout the article, due to
the constant connections to his
songs and also the laid back and
casual tone of his description
and also the featured image. The
targeted audience of the
magazine and also the artist are
shown as we can tell that the
readers are of older and mature
age however I would guess they
would be young adults or teens
due to the informal but also
slightly complex language in the
text. This is also shown by the
way the artist is dressed in the
image, which is similar to that of
these age groups. The DPS is
part of the regular section of the
magazine ‘The Hotlist’ which
broadcasts new or popular
talent in the music industry,
therefore this article is an
important and well liked feature
and will be read by the fans of
the magazine.
The feature article is some what informal as it transitions from sounding like a story or narrative of the artists day to day life
into a casual chat with the interviewer. This is shown by the use of informal language as well as the light-hearted way in which
Sheeran addresses the questions. The headline of ‘I’m bringing ginger back’ is comical and also gives the article this tone, as it is
a play on words of other phrases and adds in a direct link to his relaxed and calm attitude and lifestyle. As well as this the light-
hearted nature of the DPS is again presented due to how the writer notes his interactions with his fans and how he feels just like
them and not someone they look up too and admire. There is also a lot of praise for the artist and his talent as there are
constant remarks about the success of his work and how this has not gone to his head. There is a mixture of both reported and
said speech giving the article lots of variety and possibly appealing to more than one like of the audience. Direct speech also
gives the reader a sense that they are talking to the artist themselves. Some informal and slang language is used however not so
much which is very noticeable. This shows the relaxed tone of the interview and magazine as well as the relatable nature of
their artist.
The layout of the DPS, is very much focused on the image of the artist and
the comical headline of the interview. We are therefore aware that these
are important factors into attracting readers as they may identify with
these factors more or find it more interesting than just the article itself.
There is one image stretched across the entirety of the page with a text
box including the article towards the right hand side. There are not really
ant columns used apart from those in the text, which makes it easier to
read, and presents the relaxed tone of the magazine due to its lack of a
uniformed look. There are not exact questions or answers but the
responses the artist made and linked in throughout the text. The headline
and subtitle is placed away from the rest of the text, giving it more
attention and also making it easy to remember especially due to its
comedic tone. There is a small by-line underneath this featuring the writer
of the article, possibly emphasis’ his small amount of importance or
significance. There is no pull quotes in the text however there is a box
filled with information about the artists company and work, giving a bit
more insight into the musicians career. Also a drop cap is included at the
start of the article, making the articles layout a bit more interesting . The
article is fairly brief, possible due to the regularity of the feature and how
this is an constant occurring segment to the page which does not need as
much focus as other parts of the magazine. Also this gives a reader a quick
read when on the go, or to those who do not want to read large amounts.
An on location shot is used of the artist, of
him standing on a bridge in front of the
houses of parliament. This signifies his
nationality due to the buildings key link to the
UK. This is important as it shows how
nationality could be an important factor in
the artists life and music and also shows how
he is relatable to those in the UK reading the
magazine. Also as he is featured standing
next to his guitar, we get the impression that
he is maybe busking or performing. A
coloured image is used, creating a much
more fun and lively attitude to the page and
also would catch the eye of someone flicking
through the magazines pages. Only one
image is used, and it is spread across the
entire page and has majority of the focus on
the page. There is a small caption which
clarifies the images meaning and also shows
how the theory of the artist busking to be
correct and is located towards the upper left
hand corner of the image.
There is also the number of each page at the bottom outer corner of each next to the logo
of Q magazine, making it easier to find the articles the audience need to find. There is a
small masthead of the hotlist on the page however it is only above the article and not the
entire page and is also matched with a think white link which acts as a border to the page.
The footer does include the date, however only the month and the year as of the magazine
being issued monthly.
There is a page number on only one of the pages (left hand side),in the footer of the page as it would
have been hidden in the larger photo. Also there is no header included as it is not necessary to this
article and also the footer includes the website of the magazine. Therefore showing how social media
and the internet may be an important factor to them.
The feature article I have chosen to analysis is from Flavour magazine and featured an article about the then recent winner of the British version
of the Xfactor. The magazine chose to interview this artist as of how they would be very popular at that time after winning a significant and well
known national TV show by the publics vote. Therefore she would be very well liked across the country. This news article reflects the genre of
the magazine as it used some very light colours and also interesting images which link to the pop music genre of the artist and the top chats
genre of the magazine. The targeted audience for this magazine is from teens to young adults. The DPS is not a regular feature of the magazine
and is a one of special interview with the artist. We can presume that this artist may have been featured on the cover and therefore this spread
is very important to this particular issue.
The article itself is fairly informal and light-hearted and imitated tones of what could be seen as a casual conversation between friends or
acquaintances because of this. The language used , features no taboo or rude language which would help the image of the upcoming artist and
also shows that the magazine is not very explicit in its text or images. As well as this the informal nature gives the magazine a much more relaxed
tone and also creates a relatable attitude between the artist and the reader, making them want to read on and possibly buy more issues in the
future. There are not a question and answer based format in the article but just focuses on the responses the artists gives and uses subtitles to
sum up the question that was asked, this gives sole purpose to the artist and not the interviewer. We can therefore see how the interviewer and
possibly the writer are not that significant in this article because of this and also due to how they are not credited with the work. The language
used is very plain and ordinary, following the basic etiquette of modern day society, however it includes some words which could express the
enjoyable tone of the whole DPS.
The layout of the page featured around three columns of the text from the interview. However there are two main images also featured, one
taking up the full extent of the page on the right hand side, and the other at the bottom left hand side of the previous page , that stretches
across two columns, with a pull quote highlighted in pink mimicking this. The page is therefore shown to have a very uniformed and neat looks,
and also is fairly simple and plain. This helps the reader to read through the article easily and also draw more attention to the artist as she is a
most frequent and largest factor on the page. No questions are visible but are implied to have been asked as mentioned before in my analysis.
This page is a continuation from a previous double page or part of the article, therefore no headline, subtitle or by-line is present however we
can guess that they are featured on the page (s) before this. The pull quote is very memorable as it shows the previous lifestyle of the singer and
how her life has changed after winning the show. This makes her more relatable and attracts readers, as they can read about how she is from a
normal middle class background in the UK and had no extraordinary life prior to this. The article is fairly lengthy, presenting how it is possibly a
main feature in the magazine and has been included on the cover. Also it implies that the artist is very popular with this specific audience and
that the magazine has included a long article about her to appeal to these readers.
There are two images featured on this DPS, with them both bring close up images taken in a studio, with the artist is a similar pose doing
different facial expressions. In the two images the artist is also wearing the same costume and, hair and makeup. the pictures are all in colour
and stand out against the white background and plain colours of the article. The fact that they are in colour would catch the eye of those readers
having a quick look through the magazine and also gives the artist much more importance and significance in this DPS. The two variations of
virtually the same image could be a reflection of the different attitudes on and off stage the artist has and also the change between her previous
normal life to a life of stardom. No caption is used to tell us what is happening in the photo, as there is no real meaning and it is left up to the
reader to decide. Also in the larger image the artist is looking down at the reader directly addressing the camera with her head slightly tilted
upwards as if to suggest her dominance, popularity, fame and superiority.
